Frontside Café has become one of my favorite spots in Ventura. The quality of the food is consistently incredible, especially for the prices. You really feel like you're getting great value without anything feeling cheap or rushed. I've worked my way through a good chunk of the menu at this point and honestly haven't had a single thing I didn't like. The full Aussie is one of my go-to orders and is always done right, and their açaí bowl is another standout -- fresh, balanced, and actually filling instead of just looking good for Instagram. You can tell they care about ingredients and execution, which goes a long way. On top of that, they serve Beacon Coffee and it's excellent. Easily some of the better coffee around and a perfect match with the food. The vibe is relaxed, the staff is friendly, and everything feels well thought out without trying too hard. I really loved this place! The vibe is very hipster and laid back. I had the japanese milk toast, and it was delicious. I also tried their chai latte, which was a little too bland for me, but it did have some flavor! I just prefer a more spicy chai. The fresh fruit was perfect. All the fruit were in season, and there were no mushy bits. I also had the fresh coffee, which I thought was great. I did not realise this place is a "pay-at-the-counter-before-you-sit," but it was still a nice experience. They did forget one of the items that I ordered, but it wasn't a big deal; I just took it to go. I will definitely come back to try more food and drinks. read more

We came in on a Sunday around 10:30 prime brunch time,the marathon was also happening at this time. From when we walked in we were greeted by every employee smiling! We just did the Togo side of the restaurant and ordered a couple drinks. After seeing all the different food that was on other people's tables- wow we have to come back. What a great pop of creativity in an otherwise conventional town. The row of industrial style buildings caught my intrigue as I looked for parking. The cafe is very nicely decorated with bright colors and beautiful ceramics on the tables. We stumbled into this beautifully lit, modern brunch spot while in town for the weekend. I had the Aussie breakfast. I am extremely picky and loved every bite. The sausage is perfectly seasoned, no spice but flavorful--perfect those of us who don't like heat. The smashed potatoes came with what tasted like homemade ketchup and were perfectly crisp on the outside and smooth and creamy on the inside. Eggs were over easy. PEOPLE if you don't know, a well-executed over easy egg is exceptionally hard and they did it right! The crowd was friendly and the restaurant was pretty packed early on at 10 so go early. Though my sandwich was good, when asking for water to be refilled it took them over 10 minutes to have the self service pitcher attended to. Two women had asked in front of me about the water and an employee folding napkins said she would help them, but she still folded About 5mins. The food at frontside was excellent! A group of my friends and I went before closing on a Sunday, and we all enjoyed ourselves. There is seating both outside and inside and it then creates an amazing atmosphere. The service at Frontside is also great. The cashiers and baristas are always so king and are eager to answer questions my group had. The seating when we went was up for us to choose, but for the most part people are always moving in and out. As for my meal my full Aussie breakfast with sausage was great. Word travels fast in Ventura! I heard about this place and then started following on IG. Since their posts kept making me hungry, I finally gave in. I'm not a fan of lines but the day I decided to venture in was Mother's Day (face palm). Thank goodness it was worth the 30 minute wait (as a solo diner)! I was waiting for the bar top and I saw a couple who put their name on the list way after me go grab a spot. The staff was trying to see what happened and they were allowed to keep sitting there which was upsetting to see but oh well. Back to waiting. I got in line to place my order. Staff seemed overwhelmed but nice; gave good suggestions, helped navigate the menu. Took my place at the bar where I was able to take in the scenery. The interior has beautiful, light and Ventura-feel decor. I especially love that they have a bar top that is set up nicely. They had berry ricotta lemon pancakes on the menu which were outrageously good. The perfect amount of thickness vs sweet. The syrup complimented it perfectly. The potatoes were dynamite! Perfectly crisp and seasoned. I'm a kid at heart and always need to dip them in ketchup but this ketchup was different! They confirmed it was a more gourmet variety and I give them a round of applause for that! All the little things that are different is what sets a great business apart. I'm yet to try their lunch but it looks great as well. I'm glad we have a nice place like this in Ventura that features unique breakfast items that you can't really get anywhere else. We both ordered two spring salads. The salads were very tasty. Thinking the salad had special artichokes from Jerusalem but it was 1/8" fried tasting like onion. The most expensive item would've been the artichokes with tip was $20 and I wouldn't order it again. High hopes for Frontside and while we enjoyed the ambiance and potatoes, everything else was meh. A bit of a wait on busy Saturday, but we weren't in a hurry so we weren't bothered. We stood in line placed our order and paid prior to sitting. It felt very transactional, but understood this was probably for efficiency. We order a coffee and a flat white, basic breakfast that came with eggs, toast, potatoes and substituted fresh fruit for the meat. Added extra eggs and a pastry. The pastry was given as soon as we paid and we were seated. We waited about 20 minutes and our food came minus the additional eggs. The potatoes were heavenly. Crispy and seasoned to perfection. The second order of eggs came about 15 minutes after we received our food and were undercooked. The pastry we ordered was okay, but not what we expected. I understand they are quite busy during peak times, but we just didn't enjoy the experience. I do believe this was just a one off and would return to try something else. I revisited this and like it better everytime! I love the Aussie Breakfas with a generous serving of bacon; I was glad I brought my dog to help. The food here is consistently fabulous. I had been wanting to try this best for a long time! I walked in excited as could be and received very unfriendly service. No hellos, no engagement or acknowledgment really until a lady behind asked if we were ordering. Informed the other patron we were but we're waiting for the young lady to be ready. She looked at us still did not engage at all and we started ordering as she was at the register now. I eat out a lot and I have minimal expectations on customer service. We were never asked if we had any questions or needed anything else. I understand it's a counter service restaurant but still check in on customers when dropping food off at their tables. When food is dropped off, they quickly walk away and given no time to ask for anything (fork, napkins, sugar, etc). Food was ok. My potatoes were under cooked and tasted a little raw. I would have told our servers but they were so unfriendly, I felt uncomfortable. My latte tasted ok. Overall ok but not sure if return. I just expect a little more and love to support local. Sundays where I'm FREE are reserved for brunch with my good friend, who is also a foodie business owner. We LOVE trying new brunch spots in Ventura County. Her favorite meal of the day is breakfast & I love it too, but not as much as her. I had a very hectic morning & couldn't decide/find the right brunch spot. I had until 11 AM to decide where to go. I had checked Yelp 2 times & they kept bringing up the same suggestions, but the 3rd time Frontside Cafe came up & from the pics, I was INTRIGUED! From a quick swipe of food photos & interior pics, I texted my friend the details & I was out the door! Frontside Cafe is just off Thompson Blvd in Ventura, very close to Downtown Ventura, between Seaward & California Street. It's a little hidden, but easy to find. Once you see Transmission Brewing & Toppers Pizza, you are pretty much there. They have a small, but beautifully set up patio that's enclosed. There are about 4 cafe tables with umbrellas for shade. Honestly, I don't think they need them, but it's a lovely touch. As you walk in you are greeted by a mix of fresh, Scandinavian, coastal decor. Lots of basket woven chandelier lights & very light & airy decor with beautiful oversized prints of aerial photos of the ocean & beach. Lots of blues. And a beautiful, graphic printed wall paper, but it might have been a hand-painted mural for all I know. IT IS STUNNING! I felt like I was going to brunch on vacation. And I think that I feel this way because the lightly stained wood didn't take up the visual weight of darker stained woods. It was a very good choice. Kudos to whomever designed the space! I ordered the Avocado toast with over medium eggs, and the Fall Greens Salad w/the cheese on the side. And my friend ordered the Full Aussie Breakfast. We were both very hungry & made sure we had empty bellies to enjoy the food. We managed to get one of the last tables in the maiming dining area & chatted, but it wasn't long before our food came out. Our 2 dishes came first, then my salad last. My friend grabbed us waters & we dug in. Our food was delicious! We were catching up & in the middle of our conversation, we kept commenting on how good the food was! I hadn't had something so unexpected delicious in a long time! My avocado toast was amazing! It wasn't like others I'd had in the past. Each bite was a celebration of the fresh ingredients! There was fresh sprigs of dill, mini cucumber, pickled onions, pickled watermelon radish, leafy micro greens. I have no words to describe how good it was! The staff was so warm, friendly & accommodating. I love that level of service that they make seem so effortless. Why can't every place be this nice?! Also, the prices were fair & reasonable! I went to a few brunch spots, not nearly as clean, nice, organized & decorated, and the food wasn't as good or fresh, but charged (unjustifying-ly) more! I'm definitely ditching those places for Frontside Cafe! After our meal, I spoke with the chef & owner, he was very nice. We both complimented him on the food & told him how much we enjoyed it. Honestly, I'm nervous about posting this review because I know that once more people try this place, they will get even busier, therefore making it harder for me to get a table next time around, cuz you know, it's all about me... . I love the frontside granola and smashed avocado toast. The granola is packed with a variety of fresh fruits (strawberry, blueberry, banana, kiwi, mango, raspberry, and blackberry), crunchy sweet and slightly salty granola, a healthy dollop of yogurt, and a big spoonful of honey. The avocado toast is served on a thick slice of bread with heaping avocado and topped with colorful, fresh herbs and pickled veggies. They also offer rotating seasonal salads and creative weekly specials. Salads are huge, tasty, and filling and the weekly specials range from lemon ricotta pancakes, to steak banh mi, to Thai inspired dishes, executed to perfection. There's a shared parking lot plus parking on Front St. You can order online or phone it in for takeout. However, if you want to add on one of the amazing pastries (maple bacon biscuit, kouign amann) or a drink, you'll have to hop in line. Frontside is always bustling so plan accordingly! Updating my review because most recently this has been a go to brunch spot of mine! I love the different breakfast plates and bowls! The food tastes so fresh and whole. The service is quite quick for a Saturday brunch time and I love that you pay first before sitting down so you can get that out of the way. It's pretty packed but not to the point where you have to wait 2+ hours like some places. The restaurant has not changed much aesthetic wise in the last 2 years -- everything still looks new and clean. Lovely place to take friends, family and visiting folks. read more

Oh my goodness! I went to Frontside recently and absolutely fell in love. We went on a Sunday, it was very busy, and we found a seat at the bar area. Frontside is situated so that you are seated, and you order at the designated cashier when you are ready and they bring you your food. We ordered the Aussie Meat Pie, Aussie Breakfast, and Açaí Bowl to share. The bathroom is in the back, you enter a door which leads to a small area in the back parking lot. There is only one bathroom. We waited for at least 20 minutes for our food. Granted, it was very busy, but we kept ourselves amused. The inside of Frontside is beautiful, it's very fresh and clean, and is an excellent breakfast spot, especially for people who are looking for something a little different. After the 20 minutes were up, our food finally came. What costs Frontside in their long wait time is definitely made up for in the delicious and fresh food. My Açaí Bowl was so good, there was fresh fruit and almond butter and I enjoyed the whole thing. The Meat Pie and the Aussie Breakfast were thoroughly enjoyed, we loved it! I am very disappointed I could not give this restaurant 5 stars...because of, again, the service. The service wasn't terrible...they weren't mean, but they weren't very friendly either. They have very neutral service and will not check up on you, but if you request something, they will bring it. Besides that, Frontside was wonderful, I would definitely visit again! read more
