We stopped in on a busy Friday morning and was welcomed with a long line - which is always a sign of good eats - and after a mere 7 minutes, we were at the front of the line! It's an order at the counter, pay and find yourself a seat kind of place, which seems to work well for the establishment, as everything maneuvered like a well oiled machine. Open 5am-11pm with breakfast served all day, there is literally something on the menu for everyone. Because we were there around 10am, we all opted for breakfast items and after placing our order, secured a spot in the rear of the MASSIVE indoor space (seriously huge) and waited a mere 15 minutes before our number was displayed on the kiosk notifying us our food was ready for pickup! Dad and I rounded up the dishes on old school cafeteria trays and made our way back to feast - which was definitely needed at that time to soak up all the fun from the night before. I'll admit, the food is BOMB. I opted for the NO. 7 WESTERN OMELETTE - which featured three eggs, green chile & cheddar cheese, served with tomato, hash browns & flour tortilla, while my husband settled on the NO. 2 ONE EGG - which included bacon ham, sausage or carne adovada, hash browns and flour tortilla. My parents opted for a mixture eggs otherwise and mom got the signature breakfast burrito. Everything was massive in size, freshly made and tasted delicious. The green chili is the star of the place as it packs a punch and makes me want to drown everything in it! For the quality and size I was surprised to see how cheap our bill was - just $25 with drinks for 2! Talk about a killer deal! The Frontier is an interesting experience. I was told you had to eat here when in ABQ. I wasn't expecting to order from a counter. The menu isn't explained well. Great diner across from the University. Students were well behaved, staff was friendly, service was efficient and food was cheap. The tortillas are perfection. Get a breakfast taco or burrito. The burgers were overcooked and the nachos were okay. But we'll be back for the laid back feel and excellent tortillas. We're from Texas and this wasn't too far from I40 but also wasn't right off the highway like Texans are used to. Great laid back place! Made us want to move to New Mexico. read more

The best thing about this place is it's open later than most restaurants in ABQ, midnight I think. My first time trying it, as the reviews seemed ok. You stand in line and order and pick up your food when your number is called. I asked the cashier what was the best thing to try. She said the frontier burrito. It was big and looked appetizing, but was bland as it gets. Ground beef and cheese and some sauce. The chips and salsa tasted like they were from a bag and jar. Definitely not homemade. I could be mistaken. They don't serve beer or wine but that was ok. Being from San Diego, I have a certain expectation, I suppose. We came here because of the yelp reviews but didn't have the best experience. The food was good and the portions were generous. When trying new places one of my favorite things to do is ask what they recommend. The guy literally said "oh, I don't know". I said well what's your favorite on an enchilada, red or green? He said "I don't know I haven't had them and don't eat it." I let the rest of my family order as I went back to help to see what people suggested. I ordered the enchilada Christmas style. He then told me the sauces would be mixed, I asked if they could do green on one side, red on the other and he said no they are mixed (that's not what others posted on here). I discovered this landmark restaurant through my husband many years ago. He had traveled to visit his friend and when he came home he had brought me the best buttery sweet goodness in the form of sweet rolls that I had ever tasted. Since that day, every time we are in New Mexico and drive through Albuquerque, we have to stop here and pick up some sweet rolls. These rolls are world famous and a for good reason. They are just not overly glazed and they literally melt in your mouth! The Frontier restaurant is in their 50th year and celebrating. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner but I have only enjoyed breakfast. When in New Mexico, green chili stew is a staple and a must eat along with some fresh tortillas. We make a point of purchasing sweet rolls, green chili stew and fresh tortillas to eat while road tripping. Always a delight and we really love these treats. Food is simple but good. Service with a smile and definitely a locals spot. Easy to find as right across the street from the University of New Mexico. I had a few locals recommend it so it was top of my list. This cafe offers many local treats such as green chili and everything topped with hatch chili. You order at a counter and then wait for your number to be called. The crowd is a mix of college students and large families. Food: I ordered a small green chili which came with a warm tortilla. A warm rolled sweet bun and hatch chili and cheese hash browns. All of this was about $11 which was very affordable coming from LA. The small green chili was the perfect size and made up of ground beef and some veggies. It was missing a pop, perhaps add some acidity from tomatillos (not me giving free recipes). The sweet roll was tasty, best enjoyed warm on the spot. You can request to have them give it to you after your meal. The cheese and chili really elevated the hashbrowns. The hashbrowns themselves were missing some crispiness and salt. A classic ABQ greasy-spoon counter-serve staple. There's just the one location on Central. The atmosphere is Western-meets-60s-diner. The same owners own Golden Pride. When your order number is shown on the screens throughout the restaurant, you go and pick it up and then visit the condiment and drink stations. The fries were nice and crispy. I ordered the Bonanza burger, which has double meat, American cheese, 1000 island dressing, tomato, pickles, onions & lettuce. I ordered mine with extra dressing. The burger was good. I wish it had come on a plate in addition to the paper burger holder. Overall, if you're in the mood for a dive near the university campus, it'll fit the bill. read more

We were driving around looking for a place to eat, most of the eateries that we tried had a long wait. We drove further down Central and decided to see if we could get into Frontier. Thankfully, there was parking up front. A very busy restaurant, but the line moved really quickly. And the dinning area is very spacious. Of course, during these uncertain times it is hard to find places to dine at and dine indoors. Thankfully, Frontier was open enough and we were able to order and find a seat and get to enjoy our delicious food. The menu offers a variety of items from Breakfast favorites, Lunch items and of course that New Mexican cuisine. Today, I ordered half of the beef enchiladas since the full order is too much for me to eat. I also got one of their famous cinnamon rolls which is a great treat to eat at the end of the meal. The staff is very friendly and we enjoyed the ambiance. The parking might be hard to find if the restaurant is very busy. The line from the order window looked long, but they are QUICK. We ordered some enchiladas, tacos for kids, and I got the Green Chili Stew. My friend and I embarked on a green chile cheeseburger tour this past week. Our mission was to find the best green chile cheeseburger in the great state of New Mexico. We went to 11 different places and here are the results. The Frontier ranked #9 out of 11. The Frontier was the first place I ever had a green chile cheeseburger in the state of New Mexico. I liked the vibe of the place and its an Albuquerque institution for the most part. We returned on our way out of town this trip. Went with a green chile cheeseburger with both red and green chile, and a cinnamon roll. Here is how they were................. Green/Red Chile Cheeseburger- I thought I was ordering a burger with chopped red and green chiles (I've seen it like that before, elsewhere). Turned out it was a burger with chopped green chiles, and red sauce chile. Know what? It worked out. Messy, but still pretty tasty. The patty was pretty thin (should have gotten a double) and the cheese wasn't melted completely (went with American instead of the usual cheddar), but the bun was solid, the veggies were fresh, and the taste/flavors were ok. The red chile kind of drowned everything out a bit, but still, 3 stars on the burger, alone. Cinnamon Roll- I know they are famous for them, and you know what? They SHOULD BE! This thing was great! Just soaked in butter and cinnamon sugar. I could house 3 or 4 of these in one sitting. Absolutely delicious! Overall, solid comfort food. This place is cool. Everything was so freshly made! The tortillas were 11/10. Coming from California, they definitely had the authentic New Mexican food that we wanted. We got a frontier burrito and green Chile chicken enchiladas. The frontier burrito was bursting with flavor. The beans face it that extra kick. We came to eat here while in Albuquerque and this place outdid itself! We came once for breakfast and once for dinner. For breakfast I ordered the ham, eggs and western hash browns. It was delicious! They have a chile sauce you can serve yourself. Omg, did this make the dish absolute perfection! For the dinner, I ordered the round steak which came with fries, salad and Texas toast. My spouse ordered the taco and enchilada plate....it was finger-lickings good! The flavors were perfect, nothing lacked seasoning or flavor. I loved that it tasted home made.
