On business in Albuquerque, NM everyone recommended Frontier Restaurant. Now I know why. The Atmosphere: Frontier Restaurant is basically attached to the University of New Mexico and judging by the crowd I can tell it's a popular spot for college students. It is very casual. You walk up to order, grab a seat (in one of the five dining rooms), and wait for you number. The Food: The food is delicious. I had a plate full of enchiladas and green chili. All items come with a tortilla on the side. It is true New Mexican food - I haven't really ever had anything like it so I'm not sure how to describe its awesomeness. Prices: Cheap. I ate dinner for under $10 and it was glorious. Summary: When in Rome - do as the Romans do. I love food. I love lots of food. I love Mexican food. Now I love New Mexican food and I define New Mexican food by the food I was served at the Frontier. I live in Denver. I was only in ALB for a few short days but I ate ate the Frontier three times. I ordered the Frontier burrito, Huevos Rancheros and chicken soft tacos. Each of these was delicious; each prepared in a unique New Mexican way. The Frontier serves food fast but it is by no means fast food. It is real food - homemade food - made from fresh ingredients by what may be the most efficient kitchen in the state. The Frontier makes chiles sing. Any self respecting New Mexican restaurant can do the same but there is something magic about the chilis there. Perhaps it's as simple as a perfect roasting. These peppers are sweet and mild but they leave your tongue pleasantly warm and your forehead beaded with perspiration. Try the Huevos with diced chilis! I expected great burritos and tacos. I did not expect amazing pancakes. Holy cow! My wife and I ordered these for our kids and we were blown away my them. My wife was forced to confess that the pancakes at the Frontier were better than hers. Again, the kitchen is amazing. One feature of the Frontier is smiling people. Chaos rules at the crowded counter and the line is often quite long. It boggles the mind that the staff stays so friendly in that environment. They smile, they repeat your order back to you and they are patient. They seem oblivious to pressure. This is a sign of good management. The Frontier is a little dirty. This bothered me little, though. I can only imagine what a struggle it is to keep up with the massive dining rooms in that place. Most super-busy joints like this are grungy. That said, if there is one thing I would improve about the Frontier it would be cleanliness. The bus boys work hard but the floors and the bathrooms are sketchy. I bought a tee shirt. Came here for a quick to-go order on our way out of town during a recent road trip, getting the burrito adovado as recommended by other reviews here on Yelp. Was downright shocked at how busy this place was during a late weekday morning- but then I realized it's right across the street from the University. Oh, I get it. But it wasn't just students that were crowding this restaurant, it was families and kids and people of all ages- much like the diverse crowd you'll see attending a circus. Maybe it was a holiday and I just didn't realize it? Anyway, we parked at the meter by the door and ran in for our burrito and the first thing I noticed was the super-efficient employees. I guess you have to know exactly what you're doing to deal with the crowd I saw in the right way and make everyone happy, but I was stunned to see just how many employees there were working and how large the kitchen appeared to be! Another thing that caught my eye was the soda dispensers- similar to what I've seen at high end movie theaters, you can pick virtually any soda you can think of using a touch-screen display, which is pretty nifty and surprisingly high tech for this down-home looking restaurant. And there were several of them, too. But back to the food. I devoured the burrito in record time at the curb. It was spicy, it was cheesy, it was delicious. And it was large. Just the way I like my burritos! Boyfriend barely got a bite in edgewise, though we'd originally planned to share. Like me, he was impressed- which as die-hard tex-mex fans, is hard to do. If I owned a cot I would most certainly move into Frontier. It looks like an old, buffet diner; tables with low stools bolted to the floor, big old booths, wagon wheel light fixtures and a unique way to place your order. It's like driving. You wait for the cashier with a green light. As I hungrily waited for my juevos and chili sauce I noticed that they have this amazing tortilla making machine. They feed it dough and it goes through this amazing contraption that flattens and fries it. I want that. Then "456!! ORDER 456?!?!?!" Jackpot. I love everything about this place. Great vintage Western art lining the walls. Soft, '70's lighting. Great sweet rolls, huevos rancheros, chopped green chili or green pork chili, enchiladas, all with homemade flour tortillas. A cross-section of the whole city surely dines here, and its five-storefront expanse is excellent for people-watching. The Muzak is the final perfect touch. Open daily 5am-1am, and right across the street from UNM. I go here at least twice a day every time I visit Abq. What a great place to check out all the Albuquerque local flair. Food is good too!! Parking can be a bit of a challenge sometimes but worth every bit of it. If you have time ...just sit back and enjoy the show. Few helpful hints... don't be in a rush...take your time and read the menu before you get in line( it can be overwhelming if it's your first time)...get a good seat with a view. The best way I can describe the Frontier is: it's the IHOP of New Mexican food. When you're out late *cough* drunk *cough*, you'll drive by the Frontier and...well, that happened. There are a million things on the menu. Locals seem to be fond of the heart-attack-on-a-plate cinnamon rolls. These are unlike any other cinnamon roll I've ever had. Every try those snack machine Honey Buns? Imagine those, warm, with melted butter all over them. I mean, I tried one. I can't get down with them, but New Mexicans have strong stomachs. Your plate will likely be smothered in green, red, or red and green (commonly known as Christmas) chile sauces if you don't ask for them on the side. But, like I said, you're drunk. Everyone I talked to in Albuquerque said that I had to try the Sweet Rolls here, so this review is just for that. I stopped by after eating dinner in the area and thought it'd make a good dessert before going back to my hotel. After quickly moving through the line, I got my big warm cinnamon roll. People aren't kidding about the size. I ate what I could and saved the rest for breakfast the next day. I can't complain about the quantity or price, but I thought it could taste better. The Sweet Roll name is a bit misleading, because it's really not very sweet. I thought it was more savory. I mean look at the pics. Sweet things usually aren't swimming in a pool of grease. I really enjoy oily and fatty goodies, but I'm not sure if all that grease really added anything to the cinnamon roll here. I thought it took away a lot of the sweetness, and I didn't like that. A little more cinnamon wouldn't hurt either. The pastry was thick so the warm cinnamon flavor became slightly diluted with all that dough. With all that grease, Frontier should just deep fry them. Both flavor and texture would improve if their Sweet Rolls turned into Sweet Roll Donuts. If you're ever in San Francisco, try the cinnamon roll from Devil's Teeth. Theirs is AMAZEBALLS! read more

If you're looking to get a gargantuan variety for your buck. This is the place to go. For under $20 we filled a tray of food: bean&cheese burrito, carne adovada burrito, green chile stew, huevos rancheros, a Cinnamon roll, and all the tortillas that come with (and two drinks). Had the chopped green chile as the "sauce" on the rancheros. Not a great fan (I find the chile bland on it's own) but once the yolk popped and I scooped the beans in it was plenty flavorful. I'd probably opt for a different sauce next time though. The green chile stew was interesting. It tasted stew like and southwestern all at the same time. It's a brain-twister for sure. I recommend getting both the carne adovada and bean&cheese burritos and eating them together. Their adovada is slightly on the bland side, but the beans are mighty tasty and balance it out well. The burritos are each under $2 so you can mix and match to your hearts content. Can't believe I nearly forgot the cinnamon roll. It's not huge, but it's lite and tasty swimming in about a pound of butter. So much so that you'll use your tortillas to sop up the cinnamon sugary butter left on the plate. If you'd rather have five smaller dishes than one giant burrito for your $10, this is the spot. read more

Every traveler always looks for that one place that is unique to the city they're visiting. The Frontier restaurant is Albuquerque's "must go to" restaurant. What can I say? You can probably read a million reviews about this place and get the gist of it. I'll go ahead and add this: the food is very reasonably priced and extremely delicious! You definitely get bang for your buck. It's full menu all day long with breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and New Mexican food. So if you want breakfast at 11pm or a green chile cheesburger at 8am, that's no problem. It's hard to recommend any one thing because the entire menu is good, no joke. Try a cinnamon roll, so if you ever run into anyone from Albuquerque you can say that you did. The breakfast burritos are great (smother it in the heated salsa they have in a crock in the dining room), as is their New Mexican food. Give the western style (cheese and green chile) hashbrowns a try. Being right on Central/Route 66 and across from the University of New Mexico, it is most definitely THE place in Albuquerque to people watch. It's a great cross-section of the city's people--starving college kids, politicians and city leaders, business folks out for a bite, families, bums, etc. etc. In fact, I've run into Henry Rollins, Eddie Vedder, Tom Brokaw, Sen. John Edwards, ZZ Top, Neil Patrick Harris, and Brooke Shields there, just to name a few. There's never a dull moment in this place, and with 5 separate dining rooms, you can usually find somewhere for you and your friends/family to grab a seat (be warned though--Saturday and Sunday breakfasts are crowded and busy). Many newcomers aren't sure about the ordering system and leave without ever ordering because they don't know how to "merge onto the highway". Don't let that happen to you. You basically stand in a line, if there is one, and wait for the green light to call you up. Regulars usually know right away what they want and why they're there. If you're new, it's okay to take your time. Just let the person behind you go first, or go up to the counter when the green light calls you and tell the cashier you need a minute to place your order; they'll be patient with you. When your number is called on the number board, go up to the counter and pick up your food. It's that easy. If there were six stars to give this place, I would do it.
