This place is a nice respite from key west prices, with good quality food. The place is small and warm, gotta love that island feel! Have been here twice and gotten the Frita burger both times, really good flavorful patty for such a steal. One one occasion I got the egg rolls and the yucca, both were good, rich but GOOD. One time I got the arepa with chorizo and banana peppers, my pairing was flawless but the arepa was heavy in a sweet corn bready way, too heavy in a way I could appreciate...I'd skip it. I've been in Key West for almost a week now, and I'm sad I didn't find this place, sooner. Stopped in on a whim and I'm glad I did. I had the pork tacos with the pickled cabbage on flour tortillas. Normally I would ask for lettuce instead of cabbage, because I don't like raw cabbage, but I forgot to ask. The tacos were perfection. The meat was moist, tender and full of flavor. The tortillas were just heated enough that the edges were crispy, but the rest was soft. Being from California, I've had a Taco or two, and these beat them all hands down. I'll be back tomorrow for the empanadas!!!! Edit: Went back today and had the Frita Burger. Phenomenal !!! The burger was juicy, the spice was just right and the bun wasn't to big. First of all, the owner of Frita's is so kind. No sooner had I told her I was gluten-free and dairy free than she had recommended something delicious (which she modified for me then and there). I went back for lunch every day. The plantains are apparently fried separately, but you should double-check with her if you're sensitive. read more

Fun, eclectic place is open late, and is a nice break from the hustle of Duval when you just want to grab a bite & take a load off your feet for a little while. Seating is pretty minimal, but there are some benches outside on the patio -- which is really more of a little arbor nook, quite charming. Eclectic decorations and laid-back atmosphere at the restaurant. There's an outside window to order or the ability to sit down and eat inside. Beware -- tables are a bit flimsy and may be difficult to get into, but I assure you'll never see something like it elsewhere. So came here to try out a Frita. I have high standards by A. Being Cuban American B. From Miami where el Rey De Las Fritas is still the best place to eat them. So I ordered a chicken frita. Pretty much a deep fried chicken breast. Or so I thought. I took one bite into it and there were 3 different color meats into it. According to the owner or manager that it was a regular chicken breast. I guess the picture will let you decide for yourself. The Panko breaking needed flavor, the fried yucas were under seasoned and oily. Service was lack luster and overall the establishment was messy. Went here based on reviews. Guess next time I need to do some more research. The one bright side was the watermelon juice was very fresh and that I was given my money back for the sandwich. read more

We stumbled across this place after our first choice for dinner closed earlier than we were expecting. It's a block or so off Duval Street and looks rather unimpressive from the sidewalk, but the interior decor was eclectic and fun. The waiter was on break, so the owner took care of us and seemed a bit disorganized. In fact, we almost decided to leave, but I'm so glad we stuck it out. The food was utterly amazing. I had a "cuban burger" made of ground pork and beer with a spicy red sauce, manchego cheese, and julienne potatoes on cuban bread. It was amazing. We also had the conch fritters with chorizo and banana peppers, also amazing. The steak tacos and pork tacos were delicious as well. After the waiter came back from break, we ended up chatting with the owner for a time, a really nice retired cop from Boston. Interior seating is limited, so this might be a good place to grab a meal and eat it while you take in the sights and sounds of Key West. But the food is excellent--forget the chain restaurants, take in some local culinary color. read more

The burgers were excellent but really upstaged by the tacos. Two separate visits. First we had the burgers topped with eggs which were really unique. Delicious food and great service. We tried the Frita with manchengo and an egg, the vegetarian version of the Frita, and the yucca fries. The recipe of fluffy Cuban bread, special hot sauce, and good fillings works. Would have either sandwich again. Without a doubt, our favorite meal while in Key West. With all the delicious places we ate at while vacationing in town, that is really saying something. Hold in the wall place with cheap, good, cuban inspired eats. The service is super friendly and the place has a great vibe. They're also veggie friendly (despite Cubano focus). The street corn is fantastic, and the cheese toast is some of the most Cuban food you can get off-island. Empenadas are standard and won't disappoint. Really disappointed by this place. The coffee was not even close to a Cuban coffee. There was also a special watermelon juice that barely had any flavor. This is a tiny place with a true mom and pop feel to it, filled with Latin and south american nostalgia. Pictures of Frida Kahlo and other unibrowed people cover the walls; latin-american themed objects are spread here and there; beers such as Aguila and Cristal are available; and Cuban classics such as Guantanamera and Maria Christina were playing while we savored a delicious frita and the best conch fritters we had in Key West. The lady who helped us (I believe she's the owner) is a sweet lady who told us about her love for fritas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and cigars. I could've spend the whole afternoon there listening to her. Loved this place. Great option if you want to take a moment away from Duval Street's madness. read more

Small and decent Cuban Food. Higher priced but not bad

Tucked in on Southward Street this small gem serves delicious fare in a colorful small space. Foods are ordered in the main building with a small bar seating and couch like seating around three tables. Just around the entrance is a small courtyard with a few tables as well. In this second area is the food truck where foods are prepared. The atmosphere is cheerful and eclectic. The staff helpful and friendly. Now for the food. I have eaten here four times and each sampling has been delicious. The Cuban Pork Tacos are amazing. The guava glazed pork combined with caribbean slaw make these taco memorable. I've also enjoyed the Mahi Taco with pineapple mango salsa these have generous portions of fish. The cuban cheese toast is large enough to be shared, 3 cheeses and red peppers. A pressed cheese sandwich is basic, but on cuban bread, real comfort food. There is a nice assortment of imported beers, slush and shakes. read more

We were looking for a place that was off the beaten path not loaded with drunken cruise ship tourists. We are so glad we stumbled across this place it was outstanding. I had the freedom Burger which was one of the best burgers I've had in my life. My daughter had the traditional cubanito sandwich without mustard and she loved it.
