Hot Tin Roof in Key West, FL is one of the southernmost restaurants with a view of the ocean in the continental U.S. It was mid-October, Saturday eve, and we watched the sunset at Mallory Square (around 7:06) and then were able to get a 2-top outside to watch the boats with a view of the water. Quite scenic and also very bustling (a number of party boats went by including a schooner that sailed past and fired off a friendly "shot"). HTF has a good wine list and cocktail menu. The Tequila Old Fashioned was very good, smoky with the round, big cube. For starters, we tried the Seared Catch triple-tail small plate which was excellent and the Vegetable Risotto salad, which was hearty, yet light. For mains we tried Grilled Key West Pink Shrimp because I wanted to try local catch. It was very good, served on top of creamy grits with Manchego cheese. We also tried the Crispy Mojo Chicken, which was good. Our server was very good. Ocean Key Resort is one of the best resorts in Key West. Hot Tin Roof is the restaurant inside Ocean Key Resort. We only had breakfast, but the breakfast was at average at best. There was nothing wrong with the breakfast or service. It just tasted...average, and low quantity. The impression I get, and I may be wrong, is that Hot Tin Roof breakfasts are for those customers staying at Ocean Key, and most likely are comped or the breakfast is part of the package. I have no clue about lunch or dinners at Hot Tin Roof. I had bacon, eggs, and chopped up potatoes. The bacon and eggs were just fine, I mean how do you screw that up? The potatoes were plain and not very much. Noting the breakfasts of the wife and kid, I felt the same....average at best. It left me for looking for an early lunch on Duval street. A must visit in key west! Reservations for outside I have heard sell out weeks in advance. We were able to get a reservation inside. I was a little bummed we didn't get to see the view, but the ambiance inside is lovely too. Their menus light up which was so helpful in a dark restaurant. Our server was super helpful and made some great recommendations. We tried a few different small plates to share and enjoyed a few cocktails. Absolutely love the desserts here. They don't offer anything for birthdays (no free dessert or entree like most restaurants do) The waitress was very slow, and really didn't have much personality. She didn't look happy to be there. She knew it was my spouses birthday and we requested a dessert at least with a candle, but she refused. The salmon was good , but the pork was extremely spicy and gave us acid reflux, although the waitress said it's not spicy. I would never recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. This was our first time in Key West, and we made a reservation here to celebrate my wife's birthday with a group of six. It was a beautiful evening, and we were seated with a lovely view of the waterfront. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, and we were happy we chose this restaurant. Food: I always enjoy when a restaurant offers a creative and inventive cocktail menu. I won't go into detail on each one, but they were all very good, especially the Spiced Old Fashioned. At our server's suggestion, we ordered a couple of plates of the Grilled Ciabatta Bread. The bread was nicely grilled, and the roasted garlic manchego butter made it especially delicious. I normally try not to fill up on bread, but this was absolutely worth it. We ordered an eclectic mix of small and large plates. Some of the standout dishes included the Lobster Mac and Cheese, Swordfish, and Crab Cake. The Brussels sprouts took top honors, perfectly roasted without being greasy, full of flavor, and complemented by a generous amount of bacon. The one disappointment was the Pork Shank Osso Buco. While it was tender, it was only warm and a bit underseasoned. It was good, but not great, especially for someone who enjoys pork shank dishes. We saved room for dessert, and they were all crowd pleasers. My personal favorite was the Cuban Bread Pudding. The Chocolate Pistachio Crème Brûlée was also unique and delicious. Service: We had reservations for 7:30 and were seated promptly. The hostess and our server did a great job of making us feel welcome. The entire two-hour meal was well paced, and we always felt attended to. I was especially impressed with the backlit menu portfolios. They made it easy to read in the evening without guests needing to use their phone flashlights, which was a thoughtful and effective use of technology. Since we were celebrating a birthday, they placed a sign on the table acknowledging the occasion, which was a nice touch. It would have been even better if one of the desserts had included a lit candle. Atmosphere: The setting is beautiful. We were seated in a smaller dining room with several other tables. When we first arrived, there was a larger, very boisterous group nearby, and it made it difficult to hear our server. Fortunately, they left about 30 minutes into our meal, and the atmosphere became much more relaxed and enjoyable. Our waterfront view added to the experience. This was a very special evening. It was also the most expensive meal we had in Key West, so it was reasonable to have high expectations. With a few improvements, it could have been a five-star experience. This was such a great experience for brunch. A few gfs and I came here the other day and when we sat down at our table our menus had the last name of the gf who made the reservation on it! This was , by far, the worst restaurant experience we've had in a long time. The menu was very limited and the food choices were strange. We ended up getting a wedge salad (with pepperoni instead of bacon???? Weird), Brussels sprouts (ok, but overcooked and heavily sweetened) and a chicken mojo dish where it was hard to find the chicken. The bottom line was that the food was marginal, not at all what we were expecting. On a whole other level we felt tricked because we had specifically reserved a balcony table with a view, (informing them it was our last night on Key West, and our anniversary) but they totally ignored those requests and put us back against a wall on a balcony where any possible view was blocked by lowered curtains. There were 4 open tables that had at least a limited view, but when we questioned being moved to one of them they told us they had been reserved before we made our reservation ( so why not tell us that beforehand??) so... again.... mediocre food, terrible customer service, including being deceptive about seating us as we requested. I seriously suggest eating elsewhere if looking for a nice meal. read more

People recommended this place for brunch but we came here for dinner instead. The dinner was just as great and if you come at the right time you'll be able to see the sun set. He made great recommendations, answered all questions we had about the menu and drinks, checked up on us to make sure we weren't missing anything and enjoying our time there... Just incredible service. And the food, wow!! I must call out one dish in particular. The Duck Confit was recommended by our server and so glad we listened. This was prepared perfectly.
