I went with my son and his wife and daughter, my husband and my other granddaughter on Friday night. I made reservations because it was Friday night and they take reservations. When placing the reservations, you have a choice of standard seating, Hi-top table or outside. I requested the standard seating and noted under special requests that we had two small children. When we arrived, they did not have a table for us per my request. They only had a hi-top table (which is way higher than my hi-top table at home) in the bar, right next to the evening's entertainment and his speakers. Huh??? My littlest one almost fell out of the really high chair! It was too loud so we decided that we would just go sit out on the patio. However, when asking if they would be okay, the hostess and another waitress(?) said "Sure, whatever!" and walked away. Did not offer to assist us with relocating water glasses, silverware, or menus . . . Concerned that we would not get wait service on the patio, we flagged down our waitress to let her know were moving. She said okay and assured us that someone would be out to take our order. She actually took care of us outside as well; Justice did a very nice job. I will say that if you are eating outside, do not let your beverages get below the halfway mark before ordering another; none of the waiters were outside very often and even when they were they did not bother to look around see if anyone needed anything. They have a play area, mainly a big green patch of grass where kids, including mine were running and playing but not all of the parents were outside to supervise and several of the bigger kids were not paying attention to the smaller ones as the were running around. One kid came running through the table area and was literally running On Top of the Tables; fortunately he only hit the ones where no one was eating. The food was quite good. We had River Trash for appetizers - they fried the whole okra. Husband liked it. I like the fried pickles but the onion rings were a little tough. My Husband ordered the chicken fried steak, which was quite good but everyone in Texas knows you need plenty of gravy on the steak but also on the potatoes. Apparently, they placed the steak on top of the potatoes then put the gravy on the steak; therefore no gravy on his potatoes. One of the sides was fresh green beans, which my son and daughter also got; they didn't trim the beans? Still had stems and tails on them. And then they weren't very good. I had the fish tacos - OMG - best fish tacos I have ever had! Mahi Mahi was grilled perfectly; the fish wasn't buried under a mound of cabbage, in fact it was sitting on top of the slaw and dressing. I will go back just for the tacos. Son and daughter had the red snapper, which they both enjoyed. As for the kids meals, neither liked the mac 'n' cheese but the serving size was huge. All of the chicken tenders were gone. This is a cool little place. Need to fix some of there staff attitudes and maybe provide a little more attention to those on the patio because after all, if my kids are not under my feet and not whining to go home, we might stay a little longer and have a have a few more beverages and maybe even dessert. read more

Made a reservation via OpenTable for 2:30 on a Sunday & we opted to be seated at the bar after arrival. I sure wish it specified somewhere online that brunch was until 3 PM, closed kitchen until 4 PM & we would have arrived after 4. Kind of a let down but we stayed until 4 to order regular menu items & ordered a few brunch items to share to hold us over. Per the paper menus (that could easily be changed), the fried appetizer sampler stated that there were onion "straws", pickle "chips" and whole fried pickled okra. The okra was the only item detailed correctly. The onion straws were huge onion rings and the fried pickle chips were big pickle spears. If we knew that then we would not have ordered the dish and the batter was tasteless, not very crispy & a soggy dish as a whole. Very disappointing. We wasted the plate other than the okra. Not a fan of a few ketchup packets thrown on the plate & having to ask for more. The fries for a burger plate were not crispy either & tasted old. I'm complaining because its a waste of food, money and time when it's not very good and not eaten. The Guadalupe Pass burger and the bacon-wrapped quail were very good. If they would please address the brunch service until 3 on Sundays & correctly detail the fried sampler platter then that would be awesome. On another note, I know they were slow that day but there were way too many young staff standing around talking to each other and the bartenders could have been a little friendlier & attentive -- I had to finally ask for a second drink after waiting several minutes. Again, they were not very busy so the fried items could have stayed in the fryer longer & I shouldn't have to wait 15 minutes for a wine refill. We've been to the Frio Grill twice now and i've just gotten around to reviewing it. We did not have a good time at Frio. It smelled like sewage when we walked the the front of the building, and it seemed like they were covering up that smell with smoke. Once we got inside, we ordered *after many attempts to get a waiter over to our table*. The only good thing about this place was that the food came out quickly. When we got our food, it was very clear that the quality was less than great, you could practically taste how processed the food was. Overall super disappointed with Frio Grill, especially considering how many people enjoy it. read more

I like the food here but the service leaves something to be desired. We have come here a lot hoping it would improve however the waitstaff or lack of has caused us not to want to return. We waited one day for 20 minutes before anyone came and took our order one time. Then the food came out cold. We asked for a manager and a waiter said he was the manager. 2 weeks ago we came back and were seated and promptly waited on and our food was quickly served. We were excited thinking there was a change and being hopeful so we came back today and were disappointed. The waiter took forever even though there was only one other table and he seemed like he was in another world. We finally got our drinks and then saw him just walking around and talking while we waited on him. He never came. The person that seated us came by and I asked him how much a glass of tea was because I was going to pay and leave. He said $1.50. I told him what was up and that we were leaving and all he could say was. Sorry. I apologize. Didn't try and get a manger (not that there was one). We won't be back. read more

My wife and I were skeptical about this place, even though it's literally 4 mins from our house! After passing it for 6 months since we moved over here....we finally gave in and gave it a try! WE HAVE BEEN MISSING OUT!!! This place is the BOMB!! From the rustic atmosphere, to the peppy staff, and the Texas themed themed ambiance upon entry....it's super nice!! Now to the best part.....THE FOOD!!! We started out with an order of the house chips with salsa and queso....and the chips tasted so good with these dips!! I added a fresh lemonade, and I swear I thought I was back in the country it tasted so good!! I ordered the chicken fried steak, unaware of the monstrosity that was headed to my table!! I've eaten at many a restaurant, and this was the BIGGEST chicken fried steak I've ever had!!(see pic) My wife had the french toast and loved it(she couldn't finish either)! The portions are HUGE....and delicious!! Our server Ryan was super dope.....he kept the drinks fresh and the orders sharp!! This is a neat environment, but if you have live music, need more seating outside. We came at 6 to sit outside and listen to live music that started at 7 and all 10 picnic tables were reserved. A fun little place in the country. Perfect for groups with kids as it has an open grass area and toys put out for little ones to entertain themselves with. Quaint country feel. I had the ahi tuna salad. It was good but would have liked the dressing to have more of a punch or flavor as the tuna had no seasoning on it. I found it overall kind of bland. My husband had the stuffed avocado salad as did my friend who is a second timer ordering it. They seemed to like that. I would try that next time. read more

Loved the outdoor area and comfortable dining room. It had character. I had an omelette and hash browns. The omelette was one of those boring paper thin egg omelettes with cheese melted inside. It was OK bu not very tasty and very boring. The hash browns were great. I love all crispy hash browns. The biggest disappointment was the total disregard of the staff. Only one of dozen or so employees wore their mask properly. Masks were below their noses, only on their chins or hanging around their necks. Despite the boring breakfast, I would have loved to try their lunch or dinner or even stop in for a drink but I definitely won't be back before the pandemic is over. read more

This place was fantastic! If I hadn't known better I would have thought I was in the Hill Country. The restaurant had a gorgeous rustic feel to it. The servers are dressed casually in jeans and button up plaid shirts. The acoustics were good - there were quite a few people but the noise level was very tolerable. It's a pretty new restaurant so maybe the secret isn't out yet. The food was well presented and priced modestly. We will definitely be back. Keep up the great work! read more

The food is decent. The menu is limited. It is VERY overpriced for the quality of the food. The staff was doing shots at the bar. There is a cat infestation around the building. Just not worth the money. After receiving the restaurant response I have lowered my rating to one star. The management response is insulting. Cats to control mice? Manager giving his employees liquor at the "end of a 14 hour double." I guess they had been working since 3:45 in the morning because they were taking shots at 5:45 PM. read more

I have tried several different items on the menu (over multiple visits) and they have all been exceptional. And finally this restaurant is very kid friendly. I placed my order online through doordash. It said the order would be ready in 35 minutes. I arrived 40 minutes later and no one was at the door to greet me or working at the bar to figure out how to get my order. The place had very few customers. After standing there 7-8 minutes, some bearded guy wandered out of the kitchen looking like he a just smoked a bowl or something. I told him I was picking up an order, but by this time, there were people behind me waiting to be seated. So he told me to wait while he seated them. I sat at the bar another 5 minutes and he came out again saying nobody took my order. I told him I ordered on door dash and he looks at his Ipad only to tell me, I see your order but the ipad never went off. But we both know his lazy ass was in the back and he wasnt up front doing his job. If he were, my food would have been ordered. He started to enter the order and I told him to forget it and left. Negative Star. I went for Friday Happy Hour (2-6pm) and arrived at 4pm. There were at least 4 staff behind the bar - 2 bartenders (Hat girl & Anonymous girl), 1 male bar back and 1 Manager (we'll call Violet). It took nearly 15 minutes with 7 total bar customers for me to get any service. And those 6 customers all already had beverages and all received a second round before the staff even acknowledged me. Actually, they didn't acknowledge me, I had to get the young male bar back's attention because the rest of the staff had passed back and forth multiple times in front of me without so much as a Howdy much less a glance in my direction and I was sitting in the middle of the bar (I had no beverage in front of me) and the other bar customers. I couldn't believe the piss poor customer service at the Frio Grill. No hello, what can I get you to drink, Here's our menu, let me tell you about our fantastic happy hour, nothing. Only the bartender Taylor (female) who arrived later had any customer service skills. I've visited The Barn before for drinks and music and those 2 bartenders over there - Alexis & Jersey are professionals. They are happy, friendly and efficient - all with tons of thirsty music lovers to serve and they do an AWESOME job every time. Those 2 need to train the Frio bar staff and Violet, so their incompetence doesn't drive away anymore customers to Andy's Bar and Grill on 290, Murdoch's, Misfit Outpost or Cypress Hideout. Wow, this place has gone downhill fast. I have frequented the restaurant three times now. The first time was about two months ago, I was impressed by the great selection of beers, good food selections, and great atmosphere. The second visit (a month ago) was lunch (I didn't sample any of the beer this time), the food (pecan crusted chicken) was good, but not what I remembered from my first visit. The third visit we recommended Frio and brought friends, we glowed about the great selections and good food. We were disappointed on all fronts (this time adding poor service). Half the beer selections were crossed off the menu, then the waiter and manger had to come to tell us that the selection we did choose was "out" as well. While I can understand when the wait staff is new, I can't understand how they can be so poor in the basic servicing of a table (it's like the person never sat at a restaurant table in his life before). Reaching across the table, right in front of your face when eating (plenty of room to serve from behind), not providing the basics when asked (plates for appetizers, salt & pepper, etc, etc.) - we felt like we should be doing his job. Then the food... let me just say it was the nail in the coffin. Quail bites were borderline burnt, chicken fried steak was near cold and was definitely just a frozen processed meal (I could have bought that at Costco). The rest of the guest's food was just lukewarm. A very unenjoyable experience to say the least. And being our friends first visit, I know it will be their last (ours too). I could not have been more disappointed in a restaurant. Such a great concept and in a great location, in need of a good place to eat. However, I don't see myself going out of my way to stop at Frio again. I am very sad; I was so excited to see this type of place succeed. read more

Had a great dinner here with a large group of over 20 people. They handled the whole process well getting water to us immediately and then ordering drinks and apps and finally the entire. They got the food out quickly once they got to the ordering. Scott handled this many people very well. And the food was awesome! We order from here. Always drove by and wanted to try it out. The day we ordered from there was tough day since we just put to sleep our 15 year old lab. From such an emotional day we just wanted some good comfort food. We ordered chicken fried steak and some other items and got it delivered. When we got our chicken fried steak it was missing one of the sides and the gravy. This was just icing on the cake for that day. It's not like we order a lot of food. So to forget key items for the a meal is really unacceptable especially when it's going out for delivery. We won't try them again. The rest of food was very subpar at best. read more

Unfortunately, the last time my husband and I came to Frio, our experience was not a good one. We had the Pecan crusted Chicken and tomato basil soup. I'll start with the soup, it was served lukewarm and had croutons and cheese on it. We were confused as to why on Earth there was shredded cheddar on it. It very sweet, not savory in any way. The basil was not there in any way, shape or form. Was not good, at all. Now about this "chicken," it was paper thin, with a gravy like topping that again, was sweet. It was weird. When I use the word sweet for both of these, I'm not talking about a slight hint of sweet added to a savory dish to maybe curb a salty base. These were both straight up dessert style sweet. The chicken was so thin it was crispy all the way through, it was difficult to tell where the breading ended and the "chicken" was supposed to begin. Now, on a positive note, those cocktails were bomb! We had the Mexican Mule - this thing was FIRE!! SO GOOD!!!! It was the saving grace for our experience this time. We spent with our tip just under $60 for 1 CUP of soup, 1 entree (we split because I can't eat an entire plate) and 2 cocktails) We were thankful that the cocktails were so good because that was a very disappointing was to spend $60. I gave 2 stars only for the 2 cocktails. I'm pretty hesitant to say we'll be back to give it another try. read more

I have eaten here often over the last year . Food always good and fresh. I love their shrimp tacos. The sunset salad is fantastic. . Service is always good and Jordan is the best. He has waited on me many times . All of the servers have given me great service. My girlfriends also had great food . Servings are ample and well prepared . Can't wait to get back there . Atmosphere is casual and it feels like you are in Austin. It has that vibe of laid back Texan . I'm glad to see they are open again after the quarantine . read more

We have gone to Frio twice now. Having had appetizers, sides, and, of course, trying each other's entrees, we've been able to get a good sense of the restaurant's cooking style and flavors. Here are my thoughts... Appetizers: The Compuesto Flameado is a great spin on chips and questo. In addition to the cheese, they've added avocado, ground beef, pico de gallo and sour cream in separate quadrants. There's a lot of it! It will easily be enough for four people. The Concan Shrimp was tasty and the bacon was impressively crispy. This is more of a two-person appetizer. Sides: I love mac-n-cheese but I don't like it overly-complicated. Theirs is simple and delicious. Their slaw is equally delicious. It had a good, carefully-handed spice and a nice crunch that we liked. Entrees: We really loved the Texas BBQ Shrimp And Grits! The shrimp were well-cooked and, it, too, had a good, carefully-handed spice. The Rockport Fish Tacos were the quintessential fish taco. The mahi mahi was perfectly cooked and the tasty, crunchy slaw complimented it well. As for the West Texas Pecan Crusted Bourbon Chicken, it's long name (whew!) describes it well but I'll add that it had a great flavor, texture and sauce. No place is perfect though. The only thing that I didn't like too much was the Mango and Citrus Flamed Grilled Mahi Mahi. The fish was cooked well but the mango chutney was too sweet and just didn't work with the fish. Service & Atmosphere: I have nothing but positive things to say here. The service is friendly and prompt. The atmosphere is chuck-full of rustic charm! In summary, both experiences at Frio were very positive. We're happy to have a place like this close to home and we'll definitely be returning! read more
