Frio Grill (as it's named on Yelp), also known as The Frio Hill Country Grill offers an "upscale comfort-food menu, extensive wine list and relaxed outdoor seating," however, the food delivers more on the inspiration of upscale comfort-food rather than execution. My husband, my one-year-old daughter, and I visited The Frio Hill Country Grill in Cypress this evening and I'm providing this review as the fulfillment of a promise I made to a friend. The Frio Hill Country Grill is conveniently located within a two-mile radius of Fairfield, therefore it's a welcome addition to a neighborhood filled with fast-food. Anthony Wegmann is the owner/operator, and if his name sounds familiar, it's because he is the General Partner for Lucky's Pub on Highway 290 between Mueschke and Mason.
We ordered the Texas Fried Mac and Cheese (appetizer), Texas Wedge Salad with chicken, Guadalupe Pass Burger, Quesadillas (kids menu), and the S'mores Skillet for dessert. I overheard patrons at the tables next to us order the Texas Fried Mac and Cheese and I assume this is one of their most popular appetizers. My husband has never met a mac and cheese he didn't like, however I wasn't too impressed. While the big, round, perfectly fried spheres of mac and cheese looked great on the outside, on the inside it looked more like a meatball - and tasted like one too. It tasted good, but I definitely didn't take away any distinct cheesy noodle flavor as I believe it consists more of brisket than mac and cheese. The Texas Fried Mac and Cheese was served with an unidentifiable dipping sauce not noted on the menu that was strangely runny and sweet. The appetizer can stand on its own without this "secret sauce."
The Texas Wedge Salad was satisfactory, but not what I'd normally expect as it was topped with blue cheese crumbles and a side of an unknown dressing instead of blue cheese dressing. I also didn't receive a steak knife for the salad. The best part of the salad was the pulled smoked chicken I was served instead of typical bland cubes of chicken breast.
My husband said The Guadalupe Pass Burger was "amazing," raving mostly about the fresh, brioche style bun. The Guadalupe Pass Burger is a half brisket, half beef burger, however If you don't like red meat, Frio Grill offers this burger with chicken-grilled or crispy.
My daughter's quesadillas were average and very greasy. Her and my husband's dinners were served with French fries dusted with seasoned salt and delicious. They were almost a little too salty, but I miss the seasoned fries at Kilburn's and these were a good replacement.
The S'mores Skillet has to be one of the worst desserts I've had in a while. A small cast iron skillet is brought to the table with what looks like a large roasted marshmallow covered with a chocolate drizzle. I was confused as they didn't bring us any graham crackers for dipping. To my dismay, I discovered they used graham cracker crumbs on the bottom of the skillet, with an uneven distribution of chocolate melted on top, covered with puffed, roasted marshmallow fluff. I couldn't get past the grainy, undercooked texture of the graham cracker crumbs interrupting each bite of roasted marshmallow. I began to fold over the marshmallows, looking for chocolate as there appeared to be none on one side of the skillet. I understand where they were going with this dessert, but it's so poorly executed, I'd rather spend $9 on a Snickers. A word of advice to Frio - no more crumbs, more chocolate, and serve with graham crackers for dipping. See Pinterest for details?
The service tonight was hit or miss, they're obviously working out a few kinks after their grand opening January 7. We arrived at 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday, and while there was a good crowd, it wasn't overwhelming like Gringo's or Alicia's. We were seated within five minutes on the outdoor patio so we could enjoy the gorgeous weather. We were greeted by a server within a few minutes, but he never gave us his name - I only learned it was Will after hearing him talk to patrons at another table. We received our food within 20 minutes of sitting down, but never received our drinks. Upon mentioning this, we were provided drinks and water promptly. My husband ordered Shiner Blonde, and they gave him a bottle of Shiner Light Blonde. I ordered a glass of red wine and I was pleasantly surprised that they brought me a large glass filled very generously. We had two different servers so we were a bit confused, but they were friendly and attentive.
You can't beat the atmosphere at The Frio Hill Country Grill. The front of the building is lined with picnic tables so patrons can sit outside and watch the kids burn off steam running around and playing with the oversized jenga blocks or cornhole dotted across the front landscape. It reminded me of Frey's Backyard Kitchen or Beefy's Backyard in San Antonio. I'm hoping Mr. Wegmann can find a way to include some live music on the weekends soon. read more
