So I went to Fringe to see Kristie about a handful of times. I thought she gave the best cut and raved about her every time. The last time I was there, I heard her talking trash about me and the girl sitting in the chair next to me. She was laughing and going on and on. What a disappointment that someone so talented could be so disrespectful and unprofessional. This review is regarding the Bond St (Brooklyn) location: Shannon is a styling goddess! I cannot recommend her enough. Hopefully someone reads this and has the same outstanding experience that I did. The story goes like this--I got a deal on Gilt for balayage highlights after reading all of the Yelp reviews. My first interaction with the receptionist staff was a dream. They were very friendly and accommodating. I called for a last minute appointment for not just a color but a cut as well, and they were able to fit me in. When I showed up on the day and gave Shannon a confusing diatribe on the history of my hair she somehow understood what I was asking for. When she was done and I looked at my hair it was exactly what I wanted but better! It is always a risk going to a new stylist. Fringe Salon, specifically Shannon exceeded all expectations. Came in for a dramatic change in my look. I'd be cutting hair that ran past my cleavage towards my belly button shorter than my collarbone for a chin grazing ultra cool wavy bob. Gisella did an amazing job. She took her time to ask me what I wanted and assess the perfect length for my face shape. Michelle is my hair hero. I was a loyal customer after my first color with her, but today solidified her as my go to stylist. Michelle has been cutting my hair for about 4-5 years now and I cant say enough great things about her. Not only is she a very talented and knowledgable stylist/colorist, she is also incredibly patient and super sweet. I give her my (oftentimes whacky) new hairstyle ideas and she gives me her honest opinion about whether it could work well with my facial structure and general style. Then she works SLOWLY to take me to where I feel comfortable going. She is not one of these egotistical stylists who decides you need 6 inches cut off your hair when you asked for 2 inches. She works with you, and does what she says she's going to do. And the results are always flattering. Unfortunately, I have been dealing with an illness which has involved hair loss. Michelle has been right there to help me figure out ways to adjust my hair style to look my best. And I have to say, I still get compliments when I leave the salon. She has been an important part of feeling confident during these trying times. I get my bangs freshened up for free in between cuts, to always look sharp. The salon is conveniently located close to the subway station. Everyone there is friendly, music and decor is poppin, and there's all you can drink filtered water and tea. Thumbs up! read more

Big fan! It was my first time at the salon today. I had a cut and color with Kristie and I love it! I was a hot mess coming in there, but when I left, the way my hair looked exceeded all my expectations. My hair had highlights in it, plus I had box dyed it twice myself. It looked GROSS. The split ends were cray and it had no body. My color is finally UNIFORM (except for these awesome blue-ish green streaks I had put in) and the cut compliments my face and adds body and bounce. SO HAPPY! Not only does my hair look good, but the experience was nice too. They offered me water or tea twice, and the music throughout was awesome. It's also very chill/laid back, and therefore relaxing. I'm set to come back in 6 weeks for a color touch up and trim. I'm glad I have finally found somewhere in the neighborhood I can trust with my hair. read more

My hair looks amazing and it's all thanks to Michelle C. I know I am not alone in having left other salons disappointed and angry after a bad haircut, or a stylist who didn't listen to me. But, I always leave happy with my hair now, ALWAYS!! I have long, thick (very thick), unruly hair that she keeps looking great, both cut and color. First off, the cut - she really listens, and understands measurements, so if you ask for an inch to be cut off, you won't end up with 5 inches gone. I'm not a person that does my hair (lucky if I run a comb through it), but the excellent cut doesn't need me to wrangle it every morning, it just looks right. Also, she's evolved my hair color from flat and blech to sunny and lovely, with some great natural looking highlights. She's managed to phase in a new color gradually, so my hair stayed in great shape. I always get compliments on my hair, and am happy to send any and everyone I know to Michelle. read more

I HATE MY HAIR!!! PROS: No one comes here. It's never busy. Tea or water at check in. That's about it. CONS: Stylists don't have enough training or education. Technique is extremely lacking. I'm so disappointed. I purchased a Lifebooker Loot for balayage OR partial highlights. I booked an appointment with Kristie specifically for balayage. After initial pleasantries, she said I was booked for partial highlights; I told her I was there for balayage. When Kristie said the two were the same, I should've realized her amateur status and left. BALAYAGE AND PARTIAL HIGHLIGHTS ARE NOT THE SAME. Although fundamentally, balayage is a type of highlight, the technique is the difference. The technique of painting color on the hair for a natural, effortless look is balayage, not partial highlights. Further, cellophane, instead of foils, are used for balayage. Instead of the proper technique and use of appropriate tools, Kristie proceeded to section off my hair, slap on some color, use her hands to push up the color (probably to try to avoid a stark color difference), and cover each section in foil, not cellophane. The result is a harsh and dramatic color difference - nothing about this is natural looking. I look like I had a full head of highlights that grew out, and I now look like I need a touchup to cover my roots. There was one section that was especially bad - it looked like the skunk effect - dramatic color difference where you can see the horizontal line of my natural color and the highlight color. She "fixed" it, but it's so bad generally that it just can't be salvaged with a quick touch up. I'm actually pretty embarrassed to walk around looking like this. I've done balayage before at John Frieda, but chose Fringe because it was closer to home. That was a big mistake. My experience really highlights the lack of training these stylists have at Fringe. Pun intended. What a disappointment. read more

I am so pleased with the haircut that I just got at Fringe by Shannon O'Mara. You know you've had a great cut when you feel beautiful and at ease with yourself after leaving the salon. This is the second great haircut I've gotten here (by a different stylist), and now I understand that it wasn't a fluke and this salon is consistently high quality. I had a fabulous experience at Fringe a few weeks ago!! I moved from the Upper East Side last year and haven't been able to find a spot in Brooklyn since then. On a whim (and the advice of 5-star Yelp reviews), I called up Fringe and booked highlights for the next day with Gisella, hoping for the best! Gisella was very sweet and friendly and looked at pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like, and asked if we could try a different technique (rather than foil) involving hair "painting" (baby lights). I was a little skeptical, but she seemed to know what I wanted color-wise, so I went for it. The process was SO much more relaxing than having foils put in. Gisela painted strands carefully and thoroughly. In the end, my hair color is the best it's EVER looked - natural but bright, and I am so so happy with the outcome!! I've learned that this method will allow the hair color to grow out more naturally, which I'm psyched about. The salon is adorable and whimsical, everyone is friendly, and the price is right. I've gotten lots of compliments and love it more every time I look at my hair. I'm so happy to have found this great spot in the neighborhood. Highly recommend!! read more

This spot has been quiet and relaxing, intimate even, when I've visited (11AM). I have had a cut by Melody twice. The first time was solid, but didn't thrill me. That said, I could tell the cut was technically VERY strong, so her skills certainly weren't at issue. I figured I'd give it another whirl and work on communicating my needs better. So glad I did--Melody knocked it out of the park. Easily the best cut I've had in years! Highly recommend Melody for both the quality of her skill and the pleasure of her company.
