I had my hair cut by Michelle a little over a week ago. I freaking love this haircut. I moved back to NY six year ago from DC where I had a stylist that I loved. For years I went back to DC to get my hair cut but when I had a kid I couldn't do that anymore. I went to three very well regarded stylists in pricey salons before I went to Fringe. Even though I told every one of those stylists that I preferred my hair a little shorter, that I wanted something that was a bit messy and fun and that I wasn't afraid to play around a little, every last one of them gave me bobs, kept my hair on the longer side and wanted to grow my hair out (I had long hair for 35 years. I'm over it). When I told the last stylist I saw that I didn't want to look like a park slope mom (no offense park slope moms!) He nodded and then made me look like the president of the god damn PTA. So I did some research and went to Michelle. I am so glad I did. Here is why she's great: 1) She listened to me -- actually listened. And when I told her I didn't want mom hair she was like, "Hell no, that will not happen in my chair." 2) She gave me input. I could sort of describe what I wanted but I'm not a hair stylist. That's why I see a hair stylist! She looked at me she thought a bit, she talked to me about what she wanted to do. It made me a little nervous but also excited and then, 3) She executed the hell out f it, because Michelle is obviously a fucking pro (sorry, I swear when I'm excited), and gave me this cut that she called 'kind of a longish pixie,' but that I call magic. It's now been over a week. This cut looks great after a wash and a quick blow dry, but it also looks super cute when I tuck it behind my ears after I haven't washed it for a few days. I AM ALL CAPS HAPPY. Thank you, Michelle! I'll be back. read more

Had a great cut & color with Rachel (http://racheldowninghair.com/). I showed her an inspiration example for the color and style I wanted, she provided great input and executed perfectly. I am super happy with the results and my experience, will absolutely only be going to Rachel in the future. Salon was great! read more

I have hair anxiety, especially when it comes to hair cuts but I trust Gisella 100%. She's amazing! She'll listen to you and tell you what's best for your hair but at the end of the day will do what you want. I don't trust anyone with my hair but her. read more

Got my hair cut and colored at Fringe yesterday. Gisella did an amazing job! Her Balayage is always on point and I couldn't be happier with the cut. She came highly recommended and would hope anyone going there would ask for her. On top of all this she's so nice to talk to. Very pleased. read more

Gisella is fantastic! She gave me a great cut (best I've had I'd say!) that works with my hair beautifully. Thanks!

Hands down the best cut I've had. Mandy did an absolutely meticulous job, creating structure with my curls, while maintaining levity. She listened to my needs and brought our joint vision to life. The salon itself is charming, furnished with local art pieces, creating a sort of upscale, farm town vibe. The whole experience of getting to Brooklyn was not easy, but I 100% recommend the salon, Joseph (hilarious), and Mandy to anyone and everyone. read more

Michelle just killed it with my cut and color. I just went from brunette to blonde with an asymmetrical cut that is awesome. We did a first round of color and then decided it was too "normal" so she dove in for round two! The whole thing took 5 hours and I was amazed as she painstakingly paid attention to each individual hair. If you want perfection, she's your gal. read more

This review is regarding the Bond St (Brooklyn) location: Shannon is a styling goddess! I cannot recommend her enough. Hopefully someone reads this and has the same outstanding experience that I did. The story goes like this--I got a deal on Gilt for balayage highlights after reading all of the Yelp reviews. My first interaction with the receptionist staff was a dream. They were very friendly and accommodating. I called for a last minute appointment for not just a color but a cut as well, and they were able to fit me in. When I showed up on the day and gave Shannon a confusing diatribe on the history of my hair she somehow understood what I was asking for. When she was done and I looked at my hair it was exactly what I wanted but better! It is always a risk going to a new stylist. Fringe Salon, specifically Shannon exceeded all expectations. Thank you, Fringe! read more

I've been coming here for several years now and haven't had a disappointing haircut yet. I've gone to a few other places in brooklyn for haircuts but keep coming back to Kristie because no one does as near as good a job as her. today i got highlights in addition to a haircut and am very happy with my appearance. read more

I have been going to Melody for two years now and can't imagine having any other stylist!! My hair is super thick and deceptively difficult to deal with, and before finding Melody I had struggled to find a stylist who worked well for me. Not only does Melody do an amazing job with both my haircut and highlights--I have a blast with her every time. I used to stress about my hair every time I needed to get it done, but that's a thing of the past now. Highly recommended!! read more

Came in for a dramatic change in my look. I'd be cutting hair that ran past my cleavage towards my belly button shorter than my collarbone for a chin grazing ultra cool wavy bob. Gisella did an amazing job. She took her time to ask me what I wanted and assess the perfect length for my face shape. Now I have an asymmetrical (cause I like it flipped to the right side), gorgeous little bob that's shorter in the back, longer in the front and soo cute. Also it's day 3 and my blow out STILL looks good. I left with a giant smile on my face!! read more

Loved these ladies. They took the time to get it right and offered a second process to get it right. I assumed it would be additional cost, but they ended up correcting for free. New go-to salon. Thank you! read more

I've been looking for a salon to call "home" in Brooklyn for a few years. Now that I've found Kristie at Fringe I'm done looking. She did an amazing job matching my color and gave me the perfect cut. I'm a curly girl and found a kindred spirit with Kristie. She knew exactly how to cut my thick, bulky, overgrown hair. Now my curls are full and bouncy. AND the cut compliments my face. There were many compliments at work the Monday following my new cut. Thanks Kristie!! read more

Michelle is my hair hero. I was a loyal customer after my first color with her, but today solidified her as my go to stylist. I had a last minute bang trim at another salon in the area and they did a terrible job. I instantly left and gave Fringe a call. They squeezed me in right away and Michelle did a fantastic job fixing my bangs. She is a true talent and kind as can be. I can't praise Fringe enough - they really know what they're doing. read more

Michelle has been cutting my hair for about 4-5 years now and I cant say enough great things about her. Not only is she a very talented and knowledgable stylist/colorist, she is also incredibly patient and super sweet. I give her my (oftentimes whacky) new hairstyle ideas and she gives me her honest opinion about whether it could work well with my facial structure and general style. Then she works SLOWLY to take me to where I feel comfortable going. She is not one of these egotistical stylists who decides you need 6 inches cut off your hair when you asked for 2 inches. She works with you, and does what she says she's going to do. And the results are always flattering. Unfortunately, I have been dealing with an illness which has involved hair loss. Michelle has been right there to help me figure out ways to adjust my hair style to look my best. And I have to say, I still get compliments when I leave the salon. She has been an important part of feeling confident during these trying times. I get my bangs freshened up for free in between cuts, to always look sharp. The salon is conveniently located close to the subway station. Everyone there is friendly, music and decor is poppin, and there's all you can drink filtered water and tea. Thumbs up! read more

Had one of the best haircuts I've ever had here with Giselle. Was really in tune with what I wanted to do with my hair and was so nice! Definitely coming back and would recommend everyone to check this place out. read more

I met Gisella last week. Every time I see my bangs in the mirror, I hiss "shut-up" to my reflection. THEY'RE SO CUTE. She listened to what I wanted, worked within the perimeters I set, and gave me a great hair cut with pizzaz and easy styling capability. I'm hooked. read more

Just got my hair done with Kristie and I have never left a salon happier! She was so kind and knew exactly what I wanted in terms of color. I don't get my hair done that often so I asked her to do a balayage that would grow out naturally and she NAILED IT! Additionally, she was so kind and pleasant to chat with. I will definitely be coming back- thank you SO so much, Kristie! read more

Big fan! It was my first time at the salon today. I had a cut and color with Kristie and I love it! I was a hot mess coming in there, but when I left, the way my hair looked exceeded all my expectations. My hair had highlights in it, plus I had box dyed it twice myself. It looked GROSS. The split ends were cray and it had no body. My color is finally UNIFORM (except for these awesome blue-ish green streaks I had put in) and the cut compliments my face and adds body and bounce. SO HAPPY! Not only does my hair look good, but the experience was nice too. They offered me water or tea twice, and the music throughout was awesome. It's also very chill/laid back, and therefore relaxing. I'm set to come back in 6 weeks for a color touch up and trim. I'm glad I have finally found somewhere in the neighborhood I can trust with my hair. read more

My hair looks amazing and it's all thanks to Michelle C. I know I am not alone in having left other salons disappointed and angry after a bad haircut, or a stylist who didn't listen to me. But, I always leave happy with my hair now, ALWAYS!! I have long, thick (very thick), unruly hair that she keeps looking great, both cut and color. First off, the cut - she really listens, and understands measurements, so if you ask for an inch to be cut off, you won't end up with 5 inches gone. I'm not a person that does my hair (lucky if I run a comb through it), but the excellent cut doesn't need me to wrangle it every morning, it just looks right. Also, she's evolved my hair color from flat and blech to sunny and lovely, with some great natural looking highlights. She's managed to phase in a new color gradually, so my hair stayed in great shape. I always get compliments on my hair, and am happy to send any and everyone I know to Michelle. read more

I HATE MY HAIR!!! PROS: No one comes here. It's never busy. Tea or water at check in. That's about it. CONS: Stylists don't have enough training or education. Technique is extremely lacking. I'm so disappointed. I purchased a Lifebooker Loot for balayage OR partial highlights. I booked an appointment with Kristie specifically for balayage. After initial pleasantries, she said I was booked for partial highlights; I told her I was there for balayage. When Kristie said the two were the same, I should've realized her amateur status and left. BALAYAGE AND PARTIAL HIGHLIGHTS ARE NOT THE SAME. Although fundamentally, balayage is a type of highlight, the technique is the difference. The technique of painting color on the hair for a natural, effortless look is balayage, not partial highlights. Further, cellophane, instead of foils, are used for balayage. Instead of the proper technique and use of appropriate tools, Kristie proceeded to section off my hair, slap on some color, use her hands to push up the color (probably to try to avoid a stark color difference), and cover each section in foil, not cellophane. The result is a harsh and dramatic color difference - nothing about this is natural looking. I look like I had a full head of highlights that grew out, and I now look like I need a touchup to cover my roots. There was one section that was especially bad - it looked like the skunk effect - dramatic color difference where you can see the horizontal line of my natural color and the highlight color. She "fixed" it, but it's so bad generally that it just can't be salvaged with a quick touch up. I'm actually pretty embarrassed to walk around looking like this. I've done balayage before at John Frieda, but chose Fringe because it was closer to home. That was a big mistake. My experience really highlights the lack of training these stylists have at Fringe. Pun intended. What a disappointment. read more

Love Love Love! My haircut and color gloss with Gisella turned out better than I could've hoped. My fine, super-baby-soft curls are a challenge to make look fresh and fun. She totally nailed it with the lob (long bob) she gave me. I couldn't be happier with my hair right now! Plus they had a bangin' spotify station on when I was there, which was an added bonus. read more

First time at the salon today. Gisella cut and colored my hair and was amazing. I had a fabulous experience at Fringe a few weeks ago!! I moved from the Upper East Side last year and haven't been able to find a spot in Brooklyn since then. On a whim (and the advice of 5-star Yelp reviews), I called up Fringe and booked highlights for the next day with Gisella, hoping for the best! Gisella was very sweet and friendly and looked at pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like, and asked if we could try a different technique (rather than foil) involving hair "painting" (baby lights). I was a little skeptical, but she seemed to know what I wanted color-wise, so I went for it. The process was SO much more relaxing than having foils put in. Gisela painted strands carefully and thoroughly. In the end, my hair color is the best it's EVER looked - natural but bright, and I am so so happy with the outcome!! I've learned that this method will allow the hair color to grow out more naturally, which I'm psyched about. The salon is adorable and whimsical, everyone is friendly, and the price is right. I've gotten lots of compliments and love it more every time I look at my hair. I'm so happy to have found this great spot in the neighborhood. Highly recommend!! read more

This spot has been quiet and relaxing, intimate even, when I've visited (11AM). I have had a cut by Melody twice. The first time was solid, but didn't thrill me. That said, I could tell the cut was technically VERY strong, so her skills certainly weren't at issue. I figured I'd give it another whirl and work on communicating my needs better. So glad I did--Melody knocked it out of the park. Easily the best cut I've had in years! Highly recommend Melody for both the quality of her skill and the pleasure of her company. Heads up: CASH TIP. read more

I am so pleased with the haircut that I just got at Fringe by Shannon O'Mara. You know you've had a great cut when you feel beautiful and at ease with yourself after leaving the salon. This is the second great haircut I've gotten here (by a different stylist), and now I understand that it wasn't a fluke and this salon is consistently high quality. This place has 5 stars for a reason. I haven't left a Yelp review in many years, but had to get back on because a good haircut is so important and you want to share the joy. The feeling I get is that they have truly talented people working here. :) read more

I found Fringe through Salon apprentice.com and I was nervous to get color done on my virgin hair. I have been going to Fringe in Manhattan for a while, seeing Michelle as she finished up her training. She is fabulous--she has given me great cuts, bang trims, and beautiful fun highlights! She even did my hair for my wedding in exactly the style I desired--1960s Victorian inspired by Fearless Vampire Killers. Now she has moved over to Fringe Brooklyn as a stylist and i couldn't be happier for her. She just recently gave me a super cute, french bob. It was exactly what I wanted. I would highly recommend Michelle. read more

MICHELLE IS THE BOMB DIGGITY!!! She did my hair last week (one process for gray roots, gloss, and hair cut). I just moved to nyc from LA and neded a new stylist. Not only is she super sweet and hip, nothing about attacking my damaged, over saturated, color disaster MOP even worried her a bit. You know how sometimes stylists make what you want seem impossible, or too crazy of a process??--NOT Michelle. She has major confidence and the skill to back it up, which made me incredibly comfortable. She gave me EXACTLY what I wanted....which almost never happens. I will definitely be going back to her regularly. You should absolutely try Michelle if you're looking for competance, detail, comfort, and fun!
