I don't usually leave reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience. I came in for a haircut with Natasha and explained that I was starting cancer treatment in a week. I told her I'd be using a cold cap during chemotherapy, and that it's recommended to trim no more than 1 to 2 inches to give my hair the best chance of not falling out. I made it very clear this wasn't about style -- just a functional cut for medical reasons. Despite that, Natasha cut more than 4 inches off. After a thorough consultation and evaluation, my stylist Natasha listened to me and explained all my options. I had my hair cut today at Soon Beauty Lab and walked out nearly looking the same way I walked in. BUT, that's a good thing. Here's the background info. I last had a hair cut nearly 10 months ago due in part because I was letting my hair grow longer. The person who usually cuts my hair wasn't available since she operates via a mobile van. Fyi, I've visited this salon on two other occasions in the past (and was never wowed). Keep in mind, I rarely look to have anything drastic done when getting my hair cut hence the ho hum sentiment when I walk out of most salons. Today, I convinced myself it was about time to get some kind of a shaping to get rid of the split ends. Enter Soon Lab (again) located in my neighborhood. When i walked in, I had a consultation with who was to be my stylist and decided to shape up and proceed with getting my hair done. The staff was welcoming, offering tea, water or wine. I settled for a peppermint tea (in a lovely tea cup with saucer). The interior was stylish with about 4 hair stations. Large enough. I expressed my concern to my stylist and it was confirmed I didn't want anything drastic done. Basically, a trim and slight shaping. My stylist who was considered "junior" was respectful of my wishes as well as cautious (most likely due to some of my past horror stories I shared). I was relieved. As my hair was being cut, I already knew I wouldn't walk out displeased. My only nitpick wad that since my hair is curly, my stylist randomly blew my hair to draw out the excess water---a little too much. As a result, the finished product looked okay except for the ends which looked dried out. No serum applied corrected it. Once i got home, i had to re-wet my ends and dry them. I was a little annoyed having to do this. Still, I was and am happy with my haircut. I liked my stylist's energy and vibe. She was super friendly and a pleasure to talk to. When I called and asked if this was a type of cut available at this salon, the young lady on the phone said, "Of course!" as if it were a ridiculous question. I was very surprised when the stylist had no idea what I was talking about. Natasha did give me an excellent hair cut (I have course thick hair), but it was very awkward, and the stylist seemed put off by my request to take a little more off the back when I thought I had been pretty clear about the shaping. Curiously, I realized that I always, always get my hair *cut* at Soon Beauty MANHATTAN, but I get it *coloured* at THIS location! Anyhow, maybe because I'm more flexible with my cut but slightly paranoid about colour jobs, and my fave girl Megan always makes my locks look amazing here. The first time I rolled in I was 100% ash blonde all over (solid colour) and I had Megan add some darker tones on top for a balayage effect (see photo, left side!). After hours of running outdoors, I found I was getting blonder ... and blonder ... aaaand blonder. Quite frankly I was getting a little bored so I just impulsively decided to go big and red again. I showed Megan a few photos and she absolutely NAILED the colour. Just when I thought I couldn't be happier, she also offered to mix me up a custom batch of colour-boosting conditioner to take home, since we all know how bottle red likes to wash out quickly. Knowing me, I'll be back in a few months asking for blue hair (you think i'm joking? ha!) and I'm sure Megan will nail it once again! I have been twice to this salon and would not go back. The first time I was not impressed with the work done for the price point they are at, but I wanted to give them another chance and I ended up regretting it. I met with Igor to discuss the look I was aiming for (blonde balayage) and the possible risks going to a shade in that color wheel. He stated that with my color, the worst that could happen was that my hair would not take the color and would be golden toned rather than the ashy tone I wanted. He said he would just balance the highlights I already had from my prior visit if he thought anything else could happen. He colored my hair and it turned pink. He also completely fried the ends to the extent he said it was un-salvageable and stated he had to cut my hair. I was never coming in for a hair cut in the first place, but as my hair was ruined, I agreed because he could not get rid of the pink he said and that "I would never be able to style my hair" if he didn't cut it. He ended up cutting off half my length off, which only got it to a reasonable state, there is still some of the color lingering but going shorter was impossible. The color also wasn't even balayage, he just dyed me completely blonde. After 6+ hours of him ruining my hair, he and the manager dared try to charge me full for the color, AND cut, and a conditioning treatment I didn't even know happened nor was asked if I wanted. When I stated that this was unfair as he ruined my hair and I wanted to speak to the owner, the manager passively aggressively stated that I would never get further than her as all inquiries and complaints go to her first. They made excuses, stated that he told me it could turn pink (which is a lie, and who would ever agree to that if you were consulted that was a possible outcome?) and stated that I was "robbing them" by asking for a discount. Not only am I livid about how my hair ended up, I am angry at how the situation was handled on a customer service level. The things they said to me after were unacceptable to a customer, let alone a customer who just had their hair completely ruined by an impatient stylist looking to upsell me. I'm not one to typically leave reviews, but after my second amazing cut and color with Igor, it's a must. Like many of us, I have had many a bad cut and color. I'm one of those that gets in the chair and says "I'm not totally sure" and then expect to walk out looking like Beyoncé at Coachella. Yes, I am a stylist's worst nightmare. When I first went to Igor, he had his work cut out for him. I had literal bands of color where I had stylist after stylist attempt a new hue - but no one ever took the time to explain to me how the color needed first to be corrected before I could create something really new. Igor took the time to explain the process and then, despite me being his last appointment, took an additional TWO HOURS into his time to get it right. I went from bands of color and a sprinkling of grey roots to having a fresh cut and a color job that STILL, 8 weeks later, has people complimenting me. Not to mention, he's really got me hooked on blonde! Igor is communicative and skilled. (And quietly goes about blow drying my locks while I fall fast asleep - like I said, I'm a stylist's nightmare). You won't be disappointed if you book with him! I'll also give a plug for White Maize - the arepa place down the street. Delicious and convenient if you need a bite before your appointment (And yes, I did eat it while Igor touched up my roots! I've been here a few times now -- two lackluster color appointments (I first saw Christian, then Selvi). Didn't love what they did, but it's close to my house and I know sometimes it takes a couple times to get on the same page. I don't normally write negative reviews, but I just received a pretty horrendous cut -- really awkward layers that almost make it look like I have an 80's style mullet. On top of my displeasure with the cut, it was fairly expensive. I was overcharged last time I was there (or perhaps they charged me for the Olaplex, which I did not ask for or agree to), and I never felt like any of the stylists really listened to me or made an effort to understand what I wanted. The Senior Stylists are pretty absent. I'm not asking for anything particularly wild, so I think it should be straightforward to come in and walk out looking good, especially how much it costs. I will be going to another salon to get my cut fixed and my color in a shape I feel good about again. read more

I've gone from hot pink hair to platinum blonde in 5 hours with her- NO damage to my hair, she is unbelievable! I went to Soon Beauty Lab last night for a haircut after not being happy with the previous cut at my go-to salon. It was a fantastic experience! Manny is warm and friendly at the front desk (and so was his lovely pup in the waiting area), and Rebecca cut and styled my hair to PERFECTION. Christian is absolutely awesome. It's been awhile since I tried out a new haircut and he suggested an amazing look for my style (not to mention toned out my blonde to perfection). I had an AMAZING experience at Soon!!! Being a natural hair gal, I don't let just anybody touch my hair. Now I only trust Danielle for cut/color. I wanted to color my hair for the longest and finally did. Danielle walked me through the entire process and I walked out with a fresh trim and lighter colored locks. I'm already looking forward to going even lighter! The atmosphere at Soon is also so welcoming. I really wanted to like this place -- it would have been so great to have a local, slightly more affordable, salon to get my hair colored. Unfortunately, my appointment started a full 30 minutes late, the hair dye burned my scalp (this has never happened before), and everything took forever. I was literally there for over three hours when the appointment was supposed to take 90 minutes. Because my appointment started late and it took so long (I assume), I was basically handed off to an assistant halfway through. The results were fine, nothing special though. Well. Where do I begin. We gave them over 450.00 to turn my daughters hair to red Ashe. The stylist had no idea what she was doing and the manager called me immediately because she knew it was wrong. Do not go to this place. They have ghosted me for over 3 weeks. We had to take my daughter to another salon to fix it and they did a terrific job. They didn't even try to make it right. Only lip service. If you can't do a job, they should be honest and upfront with the client. Horrible place. Go somewhere else to have any color job, they are not good. Literally created this Yelp acct to write this review. I called to make an appt for a trim as I'm growing my hair out after having CHEMOTHERAPY to treat breast cancer. I didn't specify junior stylist vs. master, which I guess is my mistake, but what I wanted was so basic. I explained over the phone that I only needed a trim and the cut itself probably took 15 mins. They're not even doing blow dries right now due to Covid. They obviously shouldn't be, but it's less time spent and you don't get a blowout with the price I'm about to hit you with... $148. I thought I heard the receptionist wrong. Did she say $114? That's still too much, but $148?! I put up a little fuss but ultimately just paid it because it was at the end of a long day and I just wanted to go home. The next day I emailed what ended up being one of the owners. I explained that it should've been disclosed up front that they made me an appt with the OTHER owner, so it would be top tier pricing. I said I would even accept some kind of credit to their salon. He was so rigid, showed no empathy to me having recently had cancer (didn't acknowledge that I even disclosed it...). Go elsewhere, seriously. I love Soon, particularly for my cuts. I've seen three different stylists here and they've all done a wonderful job. My hair has really been through the ringer and going here has done wonders for my over-processed strands. Sarah is a blessing in human form. She's friendly, really listens, and is wonderful to talk to. (I'm a person who dreads small talk during haircuts and mani/pedis, etc.) I've had my hair colored here twice too and was very happy with the results. The only reason I give four stars instead of five is because it's pricey (although relatively standard for NYC), and while I don't mind shelling out a few hundred dollars for a color, condition, and cut, i was a little disappointed last time I came here how quickly the color faded. He can make it all come together... Clean lines, perfect texture, wields clippers like a champ. I have never left here with anything less than stellar. Truly. And for everybody out there, let me give you advice: quit bringing in pictures of celebrities and then expecting to look like that person when you walk out. Look at your hair/style a little more objectively, figure out what looks best on you, and talk to your stylist about THAT. Pictures help, yes, but... you aren't Cate Blanchett. I so love this salon. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and absolutely not pretentious. I don't solely see one stylist, so I can attest that all of them are immensely talented artists and equally lovely people. Anna, Megan, and Sarah are all particularly fantastic. The pricing is fair, especially for their amazing in-between cuts (a super nice perk), and I really appreciate how easy and convenient it is to book appointments online. I have zero complaints. They don't push products (but give you solid styling tips). They don't rush you (but you are in and out in a reasonable amount of time). They offer you realistic hair advice (but help make your ((sometimes foolish)) hair dreams come true to the best of their abilities). As sappy as it sounds, your hair experience truly feels like you are chatting with an old friend. Even though I moved to the UWS from Carroll Gardens over a year ago, I refuse to move salons.
