Awesome haircut place. I had my haircut for 15 years in Manhattan (moving from uptown to downtown at a few places), and I was nervous about trying somewhere new. This place is the best haircut I've had in NYC! They are very smooth, listen to what I want, and are sharp with the details. I had my wife and kid go here later. The kids haircuts are by far the best in the area, and we have tried several other places. They make my son look more handsome with a cut that would fit an adult. They use a dry sponge to brush away the hairs from his face. Very smooth. Once I saw one of the people here cutting a woman's very long hair. She had put a towel on the floor and was kneeling down to get a better view while snipping away. Impressive. All in all a fantastic place. read more

Last time I came in was on the 12/22 and they did an amazing blow out. (I come in once a week.) I'm having one done right now but didn't realized or notice my hair looking bad even over the last 16 days when I was traveling for holidays visiting family and friends! I have long blonde hair and its on the dry side so I'm lucky it only needs a wash once a week but never have I gone this long and just last night someone stopped me and asked me where I get my hair done! I was shocked! Vivian does a great job and I love her cuts and blow outs! Lainie is excellent l. She has been cutting our son's curly hair for almost a decade and never fails to get it just the way he likes it. Wow. I just had a haircut with Lainie, and it's fabulous. She did my color too ... equally fabulous! She listened to everything I said both about my haircut and color history, and also about what level of styling I'm going to do on a regular basis (or not do, as the case may be!), and she gave me a cut and color job that works on all levels. She is also lovely and kind and her salon is charming. Also worth noting - she took great precautions for safety with COVID. Door open, air filter on, temperature check, sanitize hands before coming in, only the two of us in the salon, everything sanitized in between appointments. Hopefully, soon, this part of the review will be dated, but I think that for people looking for a hair salon right now, it's a big deal that she is doing such a thorough job making sure that everyone is safe while getting their hair done! read more

Great little salon with friendly stylists. I came here for a blowout. It costs a tad more than a place like Drybar or BDry, but the place is so so convenient for me that I'm willing to pay the extra. The lady who washed my hair was sooo great. Honestly, they need to have services where you just get your hair washed. It's so relaxing and the shampoo and conditioner smelled like eucalyptus and it had a wonderful cooling sensation. She also spent a good amount of time massaging my head and neck. They actually had two stylists working on my hair. I asked for some body and loose waves and that's what I got. It looked very cute and but didn't last as long as blowouts I get from other places, but my hair tends to be finicky like that. Glad to have this place in the neighborhood and I'll be back. read more

It amazes me how bad a haircut I received yesterday from Lainie at When In Rome salon. The photos I'm posting with my review speak volumes on their own, but let me assure you that this is one of the worst haircuts I can remember receiving in many years. The biggest failure is the incompetence at blending the short sides with the longer hair on top, which you can see has resulted in a longer "flap" of hair on my right side, creating a visible line where the hair hasn't been blended. Additionally, I have a spot on my crown where I'm balding, and the hairs around that area in the back are long and unblended as well, giving the bald spot added emphasis and a messy appearance around its edge. The top is also too long relative to the shortness of the sides, which appear to have been trimmed too short in some spots compared to others. I'd been very careful, before Lainie started, to explain how important the blending was and how the hair in the back near my bald spot needed to be shorter, but it seems she was unable to skillfully cut a balding man's hair--which, I'm sorry to say, I didn't notice till I washed it at home. I will now need to pay a very good barber to fix this awful cut, and I will never return to When In Rome. read more

I discovered When in Rome shortly after moving to the neighborhood in the summer of 2016. I have color and cut done every 3-4 months by Lainey who is wonderful! The color always look natural and holds up well (a challenge with red). The salon is spotless and I can't remember ever having to wait for my appointment. The staff is super friendly and I adore Lainey who is very personable and outgoing. She is a real professional - she is a highly skilled colorist and stylist; I trust her opinion implicitly. I 110% recommend When in Rome -- I no longer live in Carroll Gardens but wouldn't even consider looking for a new salon. I am a very happy customer! read more

I just moved to the neighborhood and past this store a number of times. My wife's birthday was coming up so I treated her to a haircut and color. I am not an expert in women's hair, but my wife couldn't be more happy and you know what they say, happy wife = happy life! The staff there are very nice and welcoming. While in Brooklyn for our brother's wedding, we booked appointments here for 1 haircut and 3 up dos. While they did provide us with appointments on short notice, the charge was a bit deceitful. Haircuts include shampoo and blow dry which I did not require. Additionally, our updos were just some basic curls and a braid half up half down. Even at that uncomplicated service, we were up charged $35. Additionally, multiple advertisements around the salon offered 15% new clients. All 3 of us were new clients but because one treated the other 2 to the bill, no discount was offered to them. We generously tipped the hairdressers and despite a call to resolve the unfair payment issues, the salon would not comply. This $65 discrepancy reflects dishonorably on this salon for services that were simple and standard in a salon that was otherwise empty on a busy Saturday in Brooklyn. For the inflated cost, I would recommend a more professional salon elsewhere in the area. read more

I walked into When In Rome in a state of total crisis: my hair had tied itself into a knot the size of a baseball and I thought I'd have to chop it all off. Kristin and Lainey welcomed me right in, took out all their best tools, and patiently and kindly spent an hour untangling the knot. They got it out! It was an act of absolute genius. A few days later I came back for a haircut, to trim the ends that got damaged in the knot. This review is long overdue. This is second time I have had my hair done by Esther and I will never go to anyone else. When I moved into this neighborhood about a year ago, I tried another hair salon and had the worst hair cut of my life. I thought it was unfixable without cutting my hair very short but Esther saved my hair! I went to her a week later and she was honest and upfront about the fact that she could blend and make it look better but would need it to grow out some before it could be completely fixed. She did a great job blending the layers in the meantime and it was livable for the next few months. I just went back for the second time and requested her again, and loved what she did this time as well! She is friendly, professional, and great at what she does. The blowout was great too! I had so many compliments the next day. Definitely love this salon and Esther and won't be going anywhere else. read more
