I've appreciated how accommodating Studio 78 is! There are always a handful of clients whenever I visit but somehow they're always able to fit me in last minute as well. Seems like a place that knows how to keep their regulars and now I am a regular too! I love that they're a neighborhood staple that offers affordable cuts. I've been going to Sam for 2 years now and it's consistently the best hair cutting experience I've had. I'll be the first to admit I am NOT good at small talk, and I've had my fair share of awkward convos with hair stylists, especially when I used to get my hair bleached/dyed. So, here's where Sam comes in: after getting my hair processed so much (and DIY bleaching hehe) my hair was DAMAGED--like...gummy at one point. Super bad. I knew it was time to just let my hair grow out to its natural color and previous healthiness. I was nervous for my first appointment because my hair was fragile and I was worried I'd be judged. Well I didn't have to worry about that because Sam was so considerate and thoughtful. He assessed my hair and we talked before he did anything, and he was very clear about what he planned to do to ensure we'd be on track to returning my hair to its healthy state. He's personable, honest, funny, and one thing I really appreciated was that he didn't try to push me to buy any products. It's so clear he cares about his clients and is an expert stylist. I came here to get my color touched up for my wedding; which I said to them from the beginning- it was a very important visit. And it should have been simple. I've been growing out my dyed red hair for 9 months to go back to my natural brunette color. I explained to M that all I wanted was my ends to match the roots and that if we could color the greys while we were at it, great. I asked for something gentle like a gloss to just smooth over the band where the color was different. She proceeded to have someone else put color on my roots only for a VERY long time while she took care of multiple other clients. When she finally came to check on me she saw it had turned my hair "too dark" (which she and the assistant said over me as I was lying with my head in the sink). I can't explain just how traumatic this was- having both of them say things like "oh no, that's not supposed to happen" and then have to put MORE chemicals in my hair to take out the color on the roots. She said my greys had been "very stubborn" as an explanation for leaving the color on too long. But that wasn't the reason I'd come to her in the first place; it was to get my hair back to its natural brunette state. I ended up with an auburn color which is not at all what I asked for. M claimed the counter treatment would take out the dye but it also took out some natural pigment and then the toner she put on after made me a redhead. Again. Which is what I've been working against for 9 whole months. At least she didn't charge me for the color but I would have paid money to have avoided this situation altogether. Luckily I have a little time before my wedding to get my hair fixed but I'm currently too traumatized to trust another colorist. While I'd come to her for a haircut last year with positive results and had read good reviews of her, I was very upset by the lack of attention and the flippant attitude about something so incredibly important. It's been a few days since this experience but I'm still so mad and agitated that I felt the need to spread the word so this doesn't happen to anyone else. read more

This is the first negative feedback I've ever left on this site. But the service/haircut I experienced here was so bad, I have to caution any girl in their 20's against going here. The person who consulted me, the person who washed my hair, and the person who cut it were three different people. What I'm saying is by the time I made it to the chair to tell the person how I wanted it cut, she was looking at my hair sopping wet and didn't know what it normally looked like. I came in with a picture and she gave me a cut entirely different than the long bob "trim" I asked for: for reference, I came in with a picture of Alexa Chung's bob with middle parted bangs. She refused to cut my bangs shorter, saying "my hair wouldn't do that" - BECAUSE SHE HADNT SEEN IT DRY - and had dried my wet style into a cowlick. I now have something choppy and short with lots of layers - which she told me to let "grow out". Shouldn't you cut my hair in a style that doesn't require me to immediately GROW IT OUT after?! Also, they only accept tips in cash. I was courteous enough to walk across the street to an ATM to pull out $ for her, despite being extremely dissatisfied with the level of attentiveness that was offered here. TL;DR: I paid $75 for a cut that was nothing like I asked for, and had to go home and trim my bangs myself. read more

I go here to get my eye brows waxed. Make sure if you go, you get Elaina - she is AMAZING! Literally does not hurt at all. It almost feels good! Plus she really knows how to shape your brows... a little pricey at $16, but worth it. Just call ahead 1st & make sure she is there! Minus one star for the fact that they have a $20 minimum for credit cards. Their explanation is that they have to pay a fee ... well guess what? I have to pay a $1.75 fee to use the ATM across the street! Bad policy in my opinion. I can almost understand $10 minimums, but $20 is slightly ridiculous. read more

I came here in august for a keratin and it already looks bad. I use organic hair products that are 1000% keratin safe and my roots are dented already. I have gotten 6 keratins in my life so I'm an expert and I have never gotten one this bad. Its been 3 months and the roots of my hair are dented and the bottom is straight, not to mention my hair has never felt flatter or thinner. Now lets deep dive into the gaslighting i experienced by the hair dresser who did my keratin. She tried to sell me their products when i continuously said "no thanks i will stick to my own stuff". My products are essential oils and soap nut, no sulfates or sodium chloride and nothing you would have trouble pronouncing. These women try to tell me that would strip my keratin because it doesn't say "keratin safe" like it's clearly keratin safe just read the ingredients. So the woman who is doing my hair is PUSHING the products like it's annoying and she goes "it has to say safe 'sulfate free for keratin treated hair' look right here on the bottle it says that" and this woman i kid you not reads out and points to where it says "sulfate free" and then continues to say "safe for keratin treated hair" WHEN IT STRAIGHT UP DOES NOT SAY THE KERATIN STATEMENT and i look at her and say where does it say the keratin statement it is clearly not stated there and she looks at me with a blank stare and says "well your stuff will strip your keratin" and i just said im good thanks like...never in my life have I experienced that. Also there was like 40 ingredients i couldn't pronounce including DMD which is bad for you hair so i refused to spend $40 on a tiny bottle of crap. I know its been months but this was the worst customer experience i have ever had that it has stuck with me and now that im seeing my hair looking bad here i am. Dont go here go to fox and jane in they're amazing. read more

Jane is an angel. She is by far the best hairstylist that I've encountered since I've moved to this neighborhood. Her specialty is definitely men's haircuts, but I've sent both my female roommates & sister to her and have had great cuts, no complaints there. She will be downright honest on the hairstyle that'll suit you best. I've been told several times to not have the hair on the back of my head shortened because of my long neck. But hey, she's right. $90 for Nothing I've made an appointment on my special day and I was expecting a perfect cut. They usually charge only $10 for a bow cut, however since I wanted a finish-up I've taken the $60 cut( being nice to the hairdresser lady) The hairdresser finished everything fairly fast, (she also pulled my hair so hard) it looked fine,gave her a good tip($30). I was happy until my boyfriend saw my hair. we both got pretty upset. The touch-up I got at the salon was all gone, my bang turned out to have more and more "Missed cut hair" off the hard-sprayed set up that I received(so that it didn't show at the salon) Had to go through a Serious touch-up before my event! Are you kidding me? for $90 bucks and not even a decent fringe cut? This person must think that she's the only hairdresser in town! (Finally if you are beautiful, stuff will have some sort of jealousy drama on you) No professional manner or whatsoever. My hair needed some serious restoration, but having had Keratin once before at another salon with so-so results, I didn't think it would prove especially successful. Nonetheless, decided to give it another try, so signed up for an appointment with Jane. Results were phenomenal! Jane used an excellent product that she uses on her own long (shiny and beautiful) hair, and took her time, working meticulously. The outcome totally exceeded my expectations in the new look and texture of my hair, and its imperviousness to the elements. Stas is excellent hairstylist; he takes his time to listen to a client and to cut his/her hair. He is always on time: once I schedule your appointment, I can count on him waiting for me at the time I would arrive to the Studio. He makes very helpful suggestion re: the style and products that will work the best for my hair. I have been seeing stylist Stas for over 15 years and I can't imagine going anywhere else for my cut and color. Stas is supremely professional, talented, and high experienced. He's the first stylist I've worked with to understand my very fine hair and style it accordingly. We tried many hairstyles over time - from very short, brightly colored to pin-straight long. It was always the most amazing experience. Other staff is also friendly and accommodating. I like seeing Jane for keratin. Keratin is one of her specialties and she always does a great job. Definitely a place that has improved recently with the change of staff at the Irene Dinov salon in Brooklyn Heights. Some of their best people have moved here, which is why I came. Ella is the best manicurist/waxing person in Brooklyn by far. She is fast, calm, warm, attentive and really knows what she is doing. And despite her speed she is an absolute perfectionist, always asking me to inspect her work and see if she missed anything. Reason that this is not 5 stars is that the management team seems to be a little slow. I told them when I came in that their Yelp profile indicates they are closed on the weekends, which is bizarre for a beauty salon. In fact they are open 7 days. Well, even a month since then, no one has bothered to change this in Yelp (because they had forgotten their password?!). That is unfair to the staff who deserve to have clients coming in and not miss business if people think the place is closed. Lisa Nicotra has been taking care of my hair for more than 7 yrs. I say taking care because I sit down & let her do her work. She is possibly the most professional stylist I've used & observed. When someone sits down in Lisa's chair Lisa immediately engages with them - discusses what the customer wants & how they will achieve it. No surprises. Lisa is a communicator. I have been traveling a bit lately & wherever I go I get compliments on my color & cut. Even my adult children are pleased with Lisa's work, and quite frankly, they have come out and told me in the past my hair wasn't right when other stylists (I'm not naming stylists or salons) did my hair on Lisa's days off. Lisa gets up in the morning & goes to work. She's usually the 1st person at the salon. Her work ethic is model. like any self-respecting gay, i love to get my hair did. finding the hairdresser that morphs into one's own personal "hair stylist" is the dream of anyone who aspires to fabulousness. well, stop the presses, i have found her. and luckily, she's right in my neighborhood. her name is jane and she is at the studio fryzura in the oh-so-becoming-quite-trendy brooklyn heights. to say i have trust issues is, well...putting it mildly. to say i completely trust jane with my hair is, well...the truth ~ hence the contradiction of existence. but you know what? as long as i look good, and i certainly do under jane's gentle scissors, there's no stopping a girl. i literally sit in her chair and say do whatever you'd like with my hair. i'm. never. disappointed. and that's big for me. jane aside, and that's no easy task, the rest of the staff at TSF are always friendly and welcoming. it's very easy to get an appointment within 48 hours. the shampoo gals bring new meaning to conditioning with their massaging fingertips and assorted aromatic hair products, which, by the way, TSF has quite a selection of top of the line products very reasonably priced. they also have mani/pedis available which really isn't their main focus and i couldn't be happier. why's that? you ask. does any woman really enjoy going to a mani/pedi place and having to breathe in those toxic fumes for the entire duration of your appointment? yikes! i'd rather wait for the one mani/pedi lady to free up at fryzura and breathe clean air than enjoy the convenience of multiple mani/pedi ladies available for all of manhattan's needy cuticles while both my nails and the ozone take a soak. let's all do our part against global warming and plan ahead for our mani/pedis, shall we? then there's jane. love her. and love my hair. thusly, love myself. it doesn't get any better than that! read more

This place has high style but it is low key and friendly and everyone is comfortable here. The woman who washes is the best. Stas is an excellent hair cutter. He takes time at every appointment to make sure the style is still the right one. All the stylists seem to be listening to their customers, who are made up of all kinds of people: the very young, the elders, the very stylish. I received three hair cuts - 2 of which were horrible but the location is convenient and I thought I'd give different stylists a shot. This last one takes the cake however. I paid $52 not including tip but have an appointment for hair extensions at another salon tomorrow to clean up the hack job I recieved tonight so in essence this $52 hair cut will cost me roughly $1,052. And you would think since I voiced my disapproval that the haircut I received was not what I asked for that I wouldnt have to pay but apparently the customer is not always right. I had a circuitous journey to this salon. I ran into a friend and loved her haircut. We have similar hair (I call us "hair challenged" LOL) so was curious to know who did her hair. She referred me to Mario at Studios Fryzura. I headed over to speak to him. He gave me a lot of great advice, ways to improve my look so I decided to take the plunge and drop my stylist and salon of many years. Best thing I ever did, as far as hair goes. It's a friendly, cozy environment, usually busy. Mario is a wonderful guy, very accommodating and I always end up happy about my style/color. I also go to Elena for my pedicure and eyebrows. Could not be happier with her: my pedicures actually last to the next appointment. And I don't know how she does it, but it doesn't hurt at all to do my eyebrows (waxing or whatever they call it). I think they are competitive with their pricing as far as Brooklyn Heights hair salons. It's not super cheap, but well worth the price of admission. Since I've started going here, I will stay (er, um as long as Mario stays, that is). read more
