I have never left anyone a bad review, but this was a game changer for me. I have been going here for years for color and haircut with Jackie. I stopped going a few months ago because Mark, the owner was extremely rude with me when I showed up to fix an issue with my highlights in addition to other customers that came in for Jackie on her day off. He even went as far as telling the customer that he was working on that he should not have bothered getting out of bed. That is such bad business. It is because of him that I cannot bring myself to ever go back and support the salon. He made me so uncomfortable and gossiped about me after I left and one of my neighbors were there and told me. Simply disgusting behavior. If you don't like what your doing- sell your salon, but dont pass that negativity along to others who are going to you for a service. I hope that Jackie leaves and finds a place worthy of having her. read more

Mark is fantastic. Listens, cares and cuts hair as asked. He cut my hair as well as my teenage sons hair. Recommend for sure!

I started going to this salon during the pandemic. I was at first excited it was so low priced for color ($50 or so), but after the second time, my color faded after 1 wash. Mark said it was because it was temporary color - I was never told that non permanent color was being used. You get what you pay for, as they say! They are also not following any covid protocols. Even early in the pandemic, clients were allowed to be maskless while they had a beverage provided by the salon. Very troubling. Now I go to a larger place, and masks stay on faces no matter what. I pay more, but I'm safer, and my color doesn't fade in 2 washes. read more

I've been going to Van Sickel since moving to Brooklyn Heights 6 years ago and have had a few of their stylists work with me over the years. Everyone is great - friendly, easy to communicate with, and skilled. I most recently saw Jackie and just want to share that this may be the best cut of my life! I went from long & boring (my 'typical' hairstyle) to a choppy lob that still feels like me. My wife wanted to leave this review, but she doesn't use Yelp, so I am doing it for her :). We were on vacation to New York this past week and my wife needed her bangs trimmed. We were walking back to the subway after visiting the Brooklyn Bridge park area and walked by this quaint salon. I am not sure who her stylist was (it was a man), but he did an excellent job and didn't even charge my wife since it was just a quick trim. My wife was super happy and so that made me super happy. Her sass and expertise have gone to another salon in Park Slope (so not offend the overseers of Yelp, google her to find out where). Four stars for the fantastic location, the friendly staff that work for the owner and the delicious pistachios / complimentary coffee / tea. If you are walking by Brooklyn Heights on your way to the waterfront, the windows of the salon are decorated seasonally and fun to look at. Great artwork in the salon too. I decided on this place after searching for good salons for curly hair. It had been about a year since I got a haircut, so I was in dire need of one, and I live pretty near this place. On top of that, it seemed reasonably priced. So I called them up at around 1pm on Friday and asked when they had appointments available. They had a slot open at 5pm that day, which was great for me. I was very glad I'd been able to book that soon (especially after having another place tell me their next available appointment wasn't for 2 weeks). The shop itself is only about a 5 minute walk from the High Street subway stop, and is on a really charming block. The place itself had a nice window display and lots of interesting art on the walls. The staff was very friendly and offered me coffee, water, or soda when I arrived. My appointment was with Diana. She talked to me about what I was looking for and gave me some advice about how to grow out my hair. I asked her to just cut off whatever of my hair was unhealthy and clean up the layers a bit, which she did beautifully. It's only been a few days, but my hair feels great -- better than I can remember it feeling after any haircut I've had before. :) I'll definitely go back. read more

I found Van Sickel after searching Yelp for a stylist that could handle my curly hair. I booked an appointment with Jessica and never looked back. I have been going to her for around 2 years now, and I literally have never been disappointed with my haircut. Even when my hair changed textures she handled it with ease and she has stopped me from making some very poor hair decisions in the past. If you're looking for your new hairstylist that it good with curls, look no further than Jessica. Also, did I mention that I have extremely thick and long hair and she charges me $50 every time! Amazing! UPDATE: I had to come back to add another star, I made the mistake of buying a lifebooker coupon and getting my hair ombre highlighted at an upscale Manhattan salon. After paying an arm and a leg I didn't even get the style that I wanted. I don't like writing a bad review especially if I really liked the place. I came here on a very windy day (think wind pushing you as you stand,) exactly two months ago. I met with Jessica as recommended by Tori. It was my first time in Brooklyn heights so I called my father after I got off the subway because he used to live in that area. He talked me through the streets to get to this lovely salon. When I walked in J assessed my hair and what I wanted and then washed my hair. She also told me what products would work in my hair after the cut. Well two months later and I'm not liking my hair......It is said hair should look amazing 1-2 months post haircut and my hair just isn't....... It is difficult for me because my hair has a mind of its own (when I want it straight, it is frizzy, poofy and curly; when I want it curly its slick and straight) ALL while using the exact same products. So you can see its is very very difficult to work with... so much frustrating that on most days I keep it pinned in a clip or ponytail. But Since January 30th, My hair has been growing out in a weird shape and is still impossible for me to style nicely. Would I recommend this place to a friend? Absolutely. This is a value salon. Was it worth the $45 I spent on the haircut? I think so. Was it the best cut and blow-dry I received? No. I have long, straight hair that is by all accounts really easy to work with (healthy, shiny, no "issues"). I'm less particular about the actual salon, as long as the stylist is top-notch. This salon has a very local, one-of-a kind look & feel, with only two stations. Jessica was nice, outgoing and gave me a decent cut. However, she is just not in the same league with other stylists I have gone to in the past. I could tell by watching her work that she hasn't updated her technique in 10 years or so... which means that she can do basic cuts well but does not give you the freshest, most updated looks. She spent about 5 min on shaping my long layers -- far less time than my previous stylist did, who always gave me amazing layers and volume (but who also commanded north of $95 per cut, tip not included). The way she styled my hair (blow dry) at the end was pretty bad. My hair looked flat and just not cute. Too bad, because the cut itself was fine. I would go back for basic maintenance cuts and trims (because the price is fantastic and Jessica is very pleasant and fun to talk to), but not when I seek a new look requiring creative input from my stylist. read more

I just moved to the neighborhood and this salon is right around the corner from my place. I had Jessica, and she was very nice and attentive. I was in a slight rush, and she accommodated me. I'm blonde and was having highlights to fix my grown out roots. She was a little too rough on my hair when putting in the foils. I left thinking my hair looked really good. However, I looked closer and saw that I still had half an inch of roots. I have never complained or gone back to a salon for a redo or touchup before, and I've been coloring my hair for over a decade. I called the salon a few days later (on a Saturday) and asked the other hair dresser to look at my hair. She told me to come on in. I sat waiting for her to look at my hair for 40 minutes and ended up leaving out of frustration and walked 20 minutes to Color Haven on Clinton Street for a second opinion to make sure I wasn't mistaken or over reacting. The hair colorist spent 10 minutes looking at my hair the second I walked in and said that my hair needed a high lift for 5 minutes (I may have the terminology wrong) and it would correct my root problem. I called Van Sickel and booked a redo a few days later. I came in and told Jessica about my second opinion and she said "You don't need that" and proceeded to put additional highlights around my face. When I was being shampooed the assistant was eating a bag of onion flavored chips and put the bag down and proceeded to wash my hair. I smelled the chips on her hands and breath during the entire shampoo. Unfortunately my hair looks exactly the same from when I came in. I am happy with the color and Jessica was nice overall, but unfortunately I won't be returning. read more

I called today around 3:30pm and Diana was a gem! She said I could be there at 5:30pm and she would fit me in around her other clients. Fit me in she did! She was so warm and friendly and we hit it off the moment I came in. She worked so fast and efficiently as well and connected with every client that came in. She is the vision of a well-balanced multi-tasker. She had me in and out of there in less than 2 hours and she did partial highlights on me. She also blow dried my hair. Nina washed my hair for me and she is a Russian delight. Very maternal and gentle on the head. This salon is just what I needed after a failed attempt at the Joseph Tyler Salon. They were rude and had horrible customer service except for the receptionist. My appt was for 3pm and I was waiting until 3:35. I left because I was so turned off. That said, Diana really took care of me and restored hope in the salon professionals in Brooklyn. She was very professional and relational. I saw regulars come in and kiss her on the cheek and schedule an appt. It is definitely a neighborhood staple and I was welcomed like part of the family. I am a makeup artist, so it was great to see the wonderful customer service be upheld like I try to deliver to my clients as well. I will definitely be going back and look forward to it. Jessica was the other hair stylist there and she was excellent as well. Very cheerful and upbeat, and quick too. Don't be turned off by the dated store front decorations either. I recently moved to NYC and was terrified of NYC hair salon prices. I love looking lovely, but not more than I love keeping monies in my wallet. I thought I'd just skate by on boxed color and trips home for a cheap cut. Then I had to get married, so I had to find a hair dresser locally who would be awesome and reasonably priced. That's how I found Mark. I've been three times and will definitely keep going back. The place is a little quirky. Eclectic/rustic decor and a down home feel. Don't let it make you nervous. They have the skills of a sleek and shiny Manhattan salon, but are totally down to earth, un-judgey, and non-pushy (no one is going to be trying to sell you $40 shampoo here). The colorists are hilarious. I've had a young, mouthy girl who Mark kept admonishing. I had a girl that was quintessential Staten Island and talked my ear off the whole time she colored my hair. Last time, I had a no-nonsense Russian lady who didn't utter a sound. All 3 of them did terrific color. Mark is amazing. He knows the right questions to ask to get you to tell him what you want (even if you didn't know what you want when you walked in the door). He works quietly and efficiently and doesn't feel the need to make small talk while he gives you a great cut. He cares that you're happy and he knows what he's doing. He's super professional. And all this for $90. Are you kidding me? CASH ONLY. Plus this place always reminds me that I want to walk around Brooklyn Heights more often. ** Update to previous review: It was mid-March and Mark was on vacation (how dare he!) and so I saw Jessica. Curly Girls Beware. I got a cut here about a year ago. I will NEVER go back! And joined yelp because I remembered this experience! I got a hair cut that when styled at the salon looked okay. The stylist was so nice I tipped her very generously, but once I took a shower I could see how incompetent the cut was. Imagine a photo of a woman's large fifty's style skirt and her legs. My top layer of curly hair looked like the full skirt of a woman, and the bottom layer looked like the woman's legs. It was bad. FYI -- My hair is between a loose and tight curl and is thick. A friend of mine with tight curls got a blow out here once which was fine and then the next time she had really poor results. Nice People. Bad hair. read more

The fact that I am even reviewing a "salon" says a lot. I usually procrastinate getting a haircut as long as humanly possible, until the sight of the mop on my head becomes unbearable to the public at large. Thankfully, Van Sickel is in my neighborhood and 3 out of the 4 times I have called, they have had an appointment on the same day. Pause...this is NY and my haircut is $25. Did you hear me? I know it is Brooklyn, but still...$25. The salon is small, there are only two stations to cut hair and two stations to wash hair. The staff is great, totally friendly, but not too friendly as in talking your ear off the entire time you get your hair cut. It is all pro and no con in here - they never try to sell me products, they always start my cut on-time, they cut swiftly and are always done in less than 30 minutes, they wash the hair like it should be done (without a full attempt at a scalp massage). I have had 3 cuts here, 2 by Mark and 1 by Diana, and I have not one complaint. I will continue to go here and enjoy the neighborhood feel on Middagh just off Hicks and continue to spend just $25 plus tip to get it done. read more

She's super sweet, and I'm not a really chatty person (I'm introverted), but she's always fun to talk to without making me feel like I need to jabber for an hour straight. As a city dweller, I always find it hard to leave the island of Manhattan. I was looking to get my long, shaggy hair cut, textured and shaped. After doing some Yelp research I came across Van Sickel Salon. First of all the reviews were great and the prices were just within my price range. I was not looking to pay some outrageous city price, especially not while milking my unemployment benefits! I called the salon and made an appointment with Jessica. I ventured down to Brooklyn from the West Village. It was a quick A train ride away. Now the only thing I will say is if you are coming from Manhattan make sure you exit High St. at the end of the train. It will save you from getting lost as I did. The salon was quaint, comfy and eclectic! As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted by Jessica. I must say they are very hospitable there, just like in the south. I was offered a beverage upon walking in. After sitting in the stylist chair she asked me what I wanted to do with my hair. I showed her a picture of what hairstyle I wanted to go for. She gave me her advice and I thought it sounded great. She went to town with my haircut and I couldn't be happier! It looks great, exactly what I wanted and you can't beat the price. I've been in New York for 8 years now, and have only just found My Hairdresser. Not because I'm lazy, not because I'm not into my hair. It's all because I haven't found *the one* to make me feel lovely and wonderful and someone I trust with a pair of sheers. Jessica at Van Sickel Salon is by far the best I've met since moving here. She talks to you and listens to you, and works with you to find the best look. But, she can also just take one look at you and know exactly what will look and feel best. I'm actually a real stickler when it comes to watching someone does anything my hair. I watched her like a hawk, but in the end I even admitted to her of my watchful eye and told her that I couldn't find a thing wrong. Not one hair missed, nor one cut too short. She, also, took me from a weighed down 4 year stint of red from a box back to the blonde my mother has been begging me to be again. I hold Jessica and Van Sickel Salon in the highest regard and recommend her to everyone I know. On top of doing such a good job, she's professional, sweet, inviting and fun to spend time with as a captured audience under that cape for any amount of time. PS - She's available Monday-Thursday, and even will stay after normal business hours to accommodate those who can't get off the 9-5 job. She's worth the visit and the loyalty. read more

Review long overdue. Went here this summer because of the raving reviews on yelp, and I love this place. I got there a little early for my appt because I had no idea what to expect: delayed appts back to back? a wild mass of angry women awaiting grooming? No. I was happily disappointed. Mark and Diana were there and although they both had clients they were both welcoming and hospitable. After a quick wash, I saw Diana, showed her a pic of what I wanted my tresses to look like and away she went. Chopping, cutting, trimming! And she did EXACTLY what I wanted without having to be precise in my explanation of what I wanted or reminded of what the cut looked like. She also explained every step to me along the way. I left happy with my new look and totally satisfied with the service. Very professional! I will be returning. read more

I absolutely adore this place. I've been a customer for almost a year, learned of it through the Brooklyn Heights blog after George Clooney filmed a movie on Middagh and ended up using Van Sickel's bathroom one day. There was a hilarious post about it and I thought the staff was likely fun, interesting, and competent. The cuts and color options are typically a tad cheaper than in Manhattan and my stylist, Diana, is just amazing. She always listens to me, never pressures me about what to get done, and does a fantastic job. She shows great care with her work and treats her customers with the utmost professionalism. My husband also sees her and sometimes goes to Mark, the owner. Mark is lovely too and always does a great job. I can't recommend this place enough. It's in a lovely location and full of sweet and talented people. I also highly recommend Diana. read more

Jessica is AWESOME. I was 15 minutes late and she still fit me in and was very nice about it too. She gave me a great cut and one of the best blow outs I have had for a very long time. Salon is very cozy and small. Lots of plants and vintage furniture. Front doors were wide open and everyone was talking to each other. I have shoulder-length, tightly curly hair. I went in for a wash and cut only, have only been once, and that was with Jessica. What I like: no waiting, friendly service, quiet atmosphere, accept walk-ins, took me near closing time. Jessica knows curly hair. What I would change: stylist was not a good listener. I went to get a cut in Jan to begin a gradual trimming of ends before my wedding in Apr. I told her to cut the dry ends, but to leave the color that was still growing out. She cut the color out completely which left me with a bob. I was happy to be rid of the brassy color but very nervous my hair wouldn't grow out long enough in time to be straightened for the wedding. It DID grow in time, and meanwhile the bob cut looked great and healthy. She insisted on cutting all the color despite my reservations which means she's more interested in doing what she wants than what the customer wants. I was too nervous to go back to her and went to Rudy at Fez Salon closer to the wedding day for a final trim. I will keep Van Sickel in mind because their price is currently lower than Fez, and after all, Jessica can give a reliable cut. What I paid in Jan 2009: $50 (does not include tip) read more

I just took a chance on this salon as it is near me, less than half the price of most hair cuts I've gotten and they got a good review elsewhere for haircuts for curly hair. I'm usually nervous about getting my very curly hair cut anywhere that doesn't advertise specifically that they understand curly hair. Lots of stylists say they know how to cut and style curly hair, but then they cut it too short and/or have no diffuser to dry your hair with. It can be scary. Mark knows how to cut curly hair AND he has a diffuser. The salon is tucked away on a side street, which gives it a nice sense of privacy. Very friendly place. I highly recommend! Salon Van Sickel is a hidden gem! I love this little place for many reasons. First, Mark (the owner and stylist) is an absolute genius. He always gets my hair bouncy and behaving beautifully, and is equally talented at cuts and color. He does the BEST fine, delicate blond highlights of anyone I've ever gone too (and I've been to my share...). The salon is lovely and is filled with light, plants and artwork. There are only 2 stylists, so the atmosphere is always tranquil and friendly. The vibe here is entirely unlike the fast-paced Manhattan high pressure salons I used to frequent. The prices are so reasonable, especially considering how detail-oriented Mark is and how precisely and attentively he styles hair. Before I went to this salon, I had trouble finding a salon where I felt confortable--both with the people, the price, and the quality of work. Let's face it, we ladies don't want to sacrifice on ANY of those! I never like getting haircuts. I never walk out happy, so I stopped getting haircuts as frequently and attempted to trim it myself. However, because my girlfriend found and suggested this place after getting her first haircut there, I decided to try it out. I normally spend $12 on a haircut, and I guess you get what you pay for! I paid just about triple for my haircut here and I can honestly say it is the best haircut I have ever received. It is the first time I ever walked away from a haircut and didn't immediately want to put on a hat. The people who work there are also super nice and personable. To make a long story end, the service is great, the people are great. The next haircut I get will definitely be at Van Sickel Salon! Definitely recommend. Also, I should add that Mark, the owner, cut my hair. I told him I only wanted a trim and he actually took the time out to show me the scissor after the first few cuts to assure me he only trimmed a little bit. I was floored at how much he cared about hair, and cared about how much I cared about my own hair. You actually get to talk to these people and discuss what you want, and what would work best. Mark is a treasure as is his salon. He's a wonderful stylist and really listens to what you want as a client. I've never been dissatisfied with my cut or color.
