I am unbelievably happy to have found this salon. What people should know generally about this salon: (1) reasonable prices, (2) great atmosphere, (3) amazing stylists and (4) wonderful attention to detail. I have giant, crazy, curly hair. A few weeks prior to my visit I had gotten a cut at a salon in Williamsburg and was pretty unhappy. My hair needs layers, but (as anyone with curly hair will tell you) they cannot be cut the same way straight hair is - otherwise I end up with poofy triangle hair. I had also gotten bangs which needed to be fixed because they hadn't been blended or shaped well. Mark was my stylist, and he REALLY listened to what I had to say. Really. I have been to veeeeeery expensive salons in the past, and I hate getting my haircut because my stylists either only listen to half of what I want, or in the middle of my haircut they go "I think it would be cute if we did ____ so I'm going to try that, it will look better" and then I get bitter and angry and don't cut my hair for a year. Anyway, Mark was wonderful and understood what I wanted, but also informed me that some of my complaints about my previous stylist weren't fair which made him seem knowledgeable and not just out to appease me so he could get through the cut. The cut was wonderful and EXACTLY what I wanted and CHEAPER than any other salon I had been to. Also, one more thing that meant a great deal to me: I think it's because I'm so short that, whenever I am getting my hair washed in those big sinks, water always ends up going down my back. Even at salons where I've dished out over $100 for a cut, the stylists never even acknowledge it. Mark, on the other hand, immediately gave me a robe and had my shirt tossed in the dryer so it would be dry after he was done with my hair. It seems like a minor gesture, but small customer service details make all the difference when you are the customer. I would rant for another ten paragraphs about how much I love this place, but I think you should just go there. read more

Seriously, to quote myself to my friend just now "Diana is so good I want to yelp about her." I don't YELP, unless it's really v.i.p and this is. This woman knows her hair. I've worked very hard to grow out years of blonde hair color and if you know what I'm talking about, then it's a one in a million chance of finding someone who can take care of your hair without coaxing you back into a full head of highlights. She is a genius of color choice, I just let her go with what she wants and thinks is best. I came once before for a touch up before a trip to the beach, and with 8-10 foils, I was sold. This place rocks, it's right around the corner from my apartment, and I get a great hair cut there for $20, a true steal in NYC, especially for what you get there - a real hair stylist cutting your hair in a real salon, where you actually get a nice shampoo job beforehand. I go back to Diana every time, she does a great job and is a total sweety, we chat, she cuts; it's just a pleasant, personable place like that. read more

When I yelped this place it had great reviews. No horrible experiences, unitl MINE. The shop seemed super cute and cozy in a great brooklyn neighborhood, and it is. However, JESSICA is the stylist from hell. I walked in with my hair looking one way, just needing to get rid of the bob I wanted to grow out. Which should've been just cutting off the longer layers....after telling her that and asking for layers she argued with me over how my hair texture wouldn't work with a layered hair cut. I should've known then that she had NO IDEA how to do my hair. I told her that she needed to cut my hair dry first since I have curly fine hair and cutting it curly would make it impossible to know the end result when its straight. But she cut me off and sent me to get it washed. Even after it was washed she continued to argue what she was going to do with my hair. I told her to cut it a certain way and she claimed she did. However when my hair was completely done and "styled" it was NOTHING like she said it would be. My hair wasnt even completely blown out! She told me in order to wear the cut she gave me I had to wear it "messy". I wanted to cry. But instead of making a scene I went home. But when I got home and looked at it. I realized she had chopped off about 3-4 inches of my hair, in uneven cuts. I came in with a shoulder length bob and left with only about and inch and a half of hair around my head. The sides didnt match up none of the cuts were even! I was so devastated. I made an immediate appointment with my regular hair stylist to fix it. And she screamed when I took off my hat. I cannot even express how traumatized I was and still am. So i'm writing this so that everyone knows the reviews of Jessica are not as good as they say. I have a friend who goes to Diana and I heard shes awesome. I just wish Jessica wouldve been honest and told me she didnt know what she could do with my hair instead of chopping and rushing me out of her chair for her next appointments! Went on a Wednesday night to get a color touch-up and cut in preparation for my wedding later this month. Diane was my stylist. She was amazing. Semi-permanent color, basic trim, and blow-out took about an hour! I was blown away. Prices are also reasonable, especially for this city. $45 for cut, $40 for color. Such a nice, cute little place. I was unable to get a last minute cut appointment with Fox and Jane or Boy Luv Girl, so after some calling, I was able to get one here. If I could give 5 stars to Jessica alone, I would. She understood my needs and was incredibly sweet and professional. I honestly do not understand her mixed reviews here! I normally am not a "gabber" at salons, but after 10 minutes she had me chatting away and I felt as If I'd known her for years. My cut was precise, gorgeous, and exactly what I had asked for. Another impressive factor here is this place is AFFORDABLE. I paid $45 for my cut - and they consider that on the high end (I had long hair before it was cut). The only minus was the location itself. Though I really enjoyed the quirky decor (giant yarn flowers, framed sketches everywhere), while I was waiting I noticed there were a lot of people hanging around considering how small the space is. Because there was no standard uniform (all black, etc), I was confused as to who were employees. I found Van Sickel Salon through Yelp, and after reading all of the great reviews, I scheduled an appointment for cut, color, and a blowout. What a waste of time and money! I ended up having to go in twice in one week because they did such a crappy job the first visit. Mark was my stylist the first time, and he was friendly enough during my visit. The cut was fine (just a trim). However, when I said that I wanted my dark brown hair warmed up a bit for summer (and said I wanted it RED/AUBURN), he suggested a color that was actually named "dark blonde." I was hesitant because I am aware that you have to lighten my dark hair before adding a shade that is lighter than my natural. Reds are typically the only ones that show up without using peroxide. Mark insisted it would work, so I trusted him. Of course, I realized the next day that the "dark blonde" neither showed up in my hair nor covered any of my grays. (Big surprise, right?). Mark was snappy with me on the phone when I said that I wanted a different color but scheduled an appointment for the next week anyway. The second appointment was with an older Russian (??) woman who is the main assistant. This woman had also washed my hair/applied the color during my first visit. Honestly, she was one of the rudest women I've ever encountered in a salon. On both occasions, she barked orders at me and chatted on her cell phone (well, yelled at the person on the other end is more like it) WHILE she applied my color. (Seriously, who chats on their phone while they apply color?) During my second visit, the woman was extremely rough with my head, yanking and pulling on my hair. She got color on my neck and forehead, didn't bother to clean it up, and also got the back of my shirt SOAKING wet when she washed my hair. WTF?! To top it all off, she blow dried my naturally curly hair without using a diffuser, TEASED it with a comb, and used HAIRSPRAY on it as if it was 1986. I almost had a flashback to the first grade when teased, frizzy hair was my only option. I kid you not. In sum, that woman was extremely rude to me. For the first time in my life, I walked out without tipping her because I felt like I was treated so poorly. I don't regret that, either. I only regret visiting the salon in the first place. read more

To echo everyone else, the atmosphere and location are all great. Jessica did my hair and I'm telling you, she's amazing. This is the best haircut I've ever had! Even more surprising, though, is the price. Completely reasonable. I'm from the suburbs of Philadelphia originally and I pay more for haircuts there that I am not nearly as happy with. In all fairness, my hair is easy...straight, thick, untreated, healthy. That said, one could still mess it up! I needed an affordable haircut within a week to look my best for an interview (fingers crossed), and selected Van Sickel by its Yelp reviews and proximity to home. I was able to get some time with Diane and she did an amazing job! Even with my half-assed home-blowouts, it continues to look great. Additionally, she couldn't be nicer...I totally spilled my guts to her about a man-related issue and she gave me sound, hilarious advice! Diana is a miracle worker. I walked into this salon with incredibly damaged bleached hair that hadn't been professionally cut in years. I had decided to go short to cut off the damage, but I was really nervous because I have very tricky hair to work with. It's extremely thick, wavy, and frizzy (ethnic in a complicated way), and I have a lot of it - so short hair in the past just turned me into a poodle. I requested hair that would be very sleek and professional for work, but something I could make a little funky on the weekends. I showed Diana one picture of the what I wanted and she set to work hard and fast. She was very efficient and kept the scolding about the quality of my hair to a minimum. In fact, she even suggested less damaging ways to lighten it on my own - stylists never give DIY recommendations so I was really grateful. She did a fantastic job of thinning my hair in a way I had never seen before that totally solved my poodle problem. Even though I was her last customer of the day, she took as long as necessary to get it looking good. I've never been so happy with a haircut. It's everything I wanted and more. She told me to just come back in the next week or so if something wasn't laying right and they'd fix it. More of a bonus: She didn't try to push any salon products on me. My family and significant other are ecstatic that the mess on top of my head is gone. Even though I've never regularly gone to get my hair professionally cut, Diana has converted me. I'm a law student and money is tight, but this haircut makes me look so much more professional at work and in interviews that I can't afford not to come back. $40 every six weeks for hair magic: worth it. read more

Mark has been cutting and coloring my hair for over 15 years. I don't think there's a better deal money-wise anywhere, but that's not the only reason I go there. Mark keeps the salon running smoothly, and it's a warm, inviting place. I always have a relaxing experience. They are horrible dont do great highlights at all and when they mess up they say its cause of your hair type

I usually don't write reviews - although I read and rely on them often. However, whenever I have a terrible or great experience with a place I review it. (Only an extreme will motivate me to write since I don't like writing- so far I've only done one other review). The place itself was nice. It is small and homey just like other reviewers stated. They also had a salon pet (a dog), which I thought was cute. Downside: This place might be great for other types of hair...but not mine. I have naturally curly hair - somewhat tight curls but not so tight that I have ever had the need to get a relaxer in order to get super straight hair. I have been to many salons in my life, mainly Dominican salons, and I have never had a problem leaving with straight hair. This was my request when Jessica asked me what I wanted to do with my hair. Unfortunately - I did not get what I asked for. By the time she was "done" my hair was still frizzy/puffy. I asked nicely if she could straighten it a bit more (I didn't want to offend her but what I really wanted to say was can you please straighten it A LOT more! I really thought for a second she was joking). She took the flat iron... passed it through my hair like twice... and was then "done" again. Honestly, I wanted to take the flat iron and just do it myself (btw I've done a better job of straightening my hair myself at home - and I'm by no means a hair stylist). Anyways, the part that irritated me was that she proceeded to say that the puffiness I saw was my head and not my hair--and that she can't straighten my head. (she says this as shes flattening my hair with her hands.... OBVIOUSLY theres room for my hair to be a lot flatter/straighter) ...like... seriously? I think I know what my head looks like and if im asking you to straighten it - its because it cannnn be done. More downside: She cut my hair - while it was wet. Needless to say by the time I saw what it looked like after it was "straight" part of me wanted to cry. I didn't say anything for two reasons. 1. I didn't want to offend her and 2. I wouldn't trust someone who cut my hair terribly in the first place to go and try to "fix" it --- errr no thanks. So I get home and my mother points out that one side is longer than the other and there was this random small chunk of hair in the back that was longer than the rest of my hair. Worst downside: I had to pay 50$ for this. She said it was 45, but I only had a two 20's and a ten. ... She kept her 5$ tip --- uhmmm... When did I say I wanted to tip for this haircut? Maybe I looked like I didn't want the change back because I just left the money on the counter and went to get my jacket (3 feet away) but still (lol) im used to getting my change and then tipping if I so desire. Sooo 50$ gone. 2hrs wasted. ANNNNND I had to spend another 30 to get it fixed (at a Dominican salon that only charged me 25--but I told her that if the lady that messed my hair up kept her $5 tip---she most certainly could as well). After all is said and done. . . I want to say that the people are nice, including Jessica (minus the head flattening comment) and so is the place (aesthetically..). And I cant speak for any other type of hair... but if your hair is curly and you want it straight .... Find somewhere else to go. I'm writing this as a warning... a warning I WISH I would have seen when I found out about this place through yelp. *sigh* read more

I have extremely thick, curly hair and Jessica gave me the best haircut I have had in years! I have been to DevaChan and Christo for their super expensive curly haircuts and neither could compare to the cut I got here for a FRACTION of the cost!!! The bottom line is I needed someone to debulk my hair without thinning shears or razors or other crap that destroys curly hair and and those fancy places just could not do it. Jessica takes her time, really listens and cuts carefully. Also, her assistant is completely hilarious. I have been a customer of Diana for about a year now and I read the most recent review and it upset me. I'm sure everyone has an off day it is just a shame that she won't be going back. The first time Diana cut my hair she was filled with such positivity. She made me feel 100% comfortable; this is crucial in this industry. Her technique is precise and gentle. Diana conducts upbeat conversation every time I am there which results in my contentment as a client. Now, for my hair-her input has made me hair confident and that particular suggestion she made I still keep today. I go back once a month because my hair is short. Officially the worst haircut I've ever had.. I actually cried when I got home. Jessica completely destroyed the shape of the haircut I had before, but it is still not the worst part. I went to see Laura a few months ago for a cut. She hooked it up. I am of mixed race so my hair is curly and crazy. I thought about going to one of those curly salons but I really wasn't trying to spend over $100 on a cut with no real hairstyle in mind. This was the perfect compromise. She cut it wet. I was hesitant to go here because of the one nasty review above regarding Diana, because I am a skeptical person, but I absolutely LOVED the salon and Diana is like my new best friend!!! The salon is on a cute, quiet, tree lined street in Dumbo Brooklyn, it's quaint and so clean and relaxing inside. It's very zen in my opinion. Not to mention that it was cheap!! It was $45 for an amazing cut and blow dry, free conditioner, and DIana was AMAZiNG!! I think it's 25 for regular wash and blow too, which aint bad, because their products are nice and it's friendly and you get all the attention because it's a small salon. Diana gave me a consultation, asked me if I brought a picture, we discussed what was best for my hair ( I have a perm and a short Victoria beckam cut now - thanks to her :) ) and it was just an overall pleasant experience!! Diana was kind, the other stylist was also kind and I really enjoyed the experience. I was offered coffee/tea/water; I chose black tea and I read Nylon magazine. What could be sweeter? OVERALL A+++, this is my new salon and Diana is my new stylist! Don't drive because parking sucks, but the train is very close and a nice walk! read more

Was excited to try this salon. Received a call an hour before my appointment today to learn that it was cancelled. The woman who called me though was first trying to confirm if my appointment was for today or tomorrow - bad bookkeeping? The stylist was apparently suddenly sick and there was no one else available to cut my hair. I'm leaving for a business trip the rest of the week and now left with a desperate last minute scramble to find another salon to cut my hair -- great, considering it's a Monday and most places are closed. I went to this salon based on the great reviews I read on Yelp. The salon was very quaint and the stylist (Jessica) was very friendly. While I had no issue with Jessica in terms of her "bedside manner", I was not impressed with the haircut I received. She ended up cutting my hair much shorter than I directed to the point where it essentially looks like a crew cut. She also cut my hair in such a way that my part was on the opposite side that I typically comb it. I am not picky about my hair, however I would have expected my haircut to be comped given such a fundamental blunder. Instead I was charged $25 for a haircut that I could have gotten with a pair of clippers. I will not be going back. read more

Van Sickel is such a wonderful place, and the haircuts are exceptional. This is the only affordable place in Brooklyn Heights that is as cute, friendly, and as nice an experience as it is. I walked in with a hat on; walked out with an elegant, easy-to maintain haircut that was beyond reasonably priced! Plus much healthier-looking hair. Diana, my stylist, was sweet, professional and did not try to talk me into expensive or trendy extras or products.
