I went here for a shag hair cut. I'd done a lot of research finding the right photos, and was really looking forward to the cut. I got it colored, just a little darker, and that turned out good. The stylist was nice but not particularly warm. She didn't make me feel good about my hair, saying fine hair is so hard to comb through, and saying how weird it was that some of my hair is wavy and some straight. You want your hair stylist to make you feel good. She did the cut quickly with little attention to detail. After I left, I realized the bangs in front of my face are super uneven, and chunky. I called to ask to get the bangs evened out, and they made an appointment for me with the same stylist. I asked if I could have a different stylist, since Susi didn't do a great job initially. They said that it had to be with the same stylist, and cancelled the appointment. The location is cute, and the other woman getting her hair cut at the same time as me seemed to be having a good experience. I do not recommend. Going to have to figure out how to grow these bangs out. read more

I been going to Michelle for the several months now. I found her on the Fringe website reading through everyone's profiles. My hair is super straight with a lovely cow lick right in front so I'm picky about my stylist. Michelle does a great job with it. I was a loyal Bumble and Bumble client until my stylist of 10 years left the city. It took me a while to find the right person. I've finally found her! Had a great experience there today. Calling to book an appointment was a simple and painless process- the woman who assisted me was friendly and very helpful. As for my hair, Lisa was my stylist. She did a great job- she listened to exactly what I wanted and checked in with me multiple times to ensure that I was happy with it. I got a gloss treatment, cut and blowout. My hair looks perfect! It only took about 90 minutes too, which was nice. The salon is very clean and they take covid protocols seriously. There were never more than two clients at a time. The lack of class and professionalism and utter rudeness that was shown to my fiancé here left me so speechless, I was compelled to write to others interested in this salon - which is the last thing I thought I would find myself doing on a Wednesday night. My fiancé was excited to come and change something up with her hair because the tolls of 13 months working from home and dealing with covid has frankly worn her confidence and joy thin, something I am positive she is not alone in feeling. Upon starting with Michelle, her stylist, she was mocked for the state of her hair and told there's not much she can do about it, and "why did you come all the way here for this?" How do you think this would make you feel, Michelle, if roles were reversed? And would you recommend a loved one go and get treated like that at your salon too? I don't need to answer that. I love Michelle Casino! I've been going to her at Fringe for the past few years and she is fabulous! I got the recommendation from a friend that always has a great hairstyle; she is also a die hard Michelle fan. Michelle is great at interpreting what I try to convey when explaining what I'd like to do with my hair. I trust her opinion and she has never steered me wrong. Fringe is also a great salon. They always have interesting and cool art rotating through their space; every time I go there is some new to feast my eyes on. I also love the styling of the whole space, beautiful wall coverings; vintage tin ceiling; great mid century furnishings mixed in. The whole vibe speaks to me. Last year when Fringe's owner was on vacation, her daughter's lizard got to chill in the salon for a bit and I loved this! I was lucky enough to be sitting next to that scaly dude and watch him while Michelle did her thing. The Lizard is no longer at Fringe but I hope he's living his best lizard life. read more

I got a curly mullet cut back in February that my hair is still recovering from. The hair stylist was chopping away at my hair like Edward scissor hands. I truly wanted to cry but faked a smile and got out of there as soon as I could. I now have random short bits of hair throughout my head that I'm trying to grow out. Visited here after getting a great deal on Gilt, and verifying with Yelp that the salon was good. First of all, the salon is adorable. It is in Gowanus on a block with fun graffiti murals, and has art from rotating local artists. Michelle cut my hair and immediately put me at ease. I'm always nervous to have a new person touch my hair, but I felt comfortable, and Michelle helped me decide what length and style to ultimately go with. She did a great job, and provided candid advice on treatments I'm interested in. Really happy with my cut and will definitely go back! read more

I had a horrible experience here. I came in for a partial balayage where I planned to go lighter for the summer. My hair ended up darker than what it was before. I came back to fix it and Gisele literally added thick blotches of bleach in my hair. This is not my idea of a balayage where they gently paint lighter colors to add definition to your hair. She literally just grabbed thick layers of my hair and bleached them. My hair looks horrible and I had to get it fixed somewhere else. Definitely be-careful if you want to go in for color. Wasted my money and my time. read more

I was willing to still come back to their Broome St. location for Rosie (who I've gone to almost quarterly since 2012) even after my move to Brooklyn, but then they opened this outpost. They still have great hours and friendly service and really thorough shampooing. They offer you water or tea when you sit down and I think I'll take them up on some tea next time to really up the ante on how relaxing this place is. My amazing new cut is being sadly topped with a beanie for the rest of winter, but I'm definitely coming back here in warmer weather to take it even shorter (or add some layers or whatever). read more

This is the best salon around. I have been a client of Gisella's for a couple year now and I love her so much, she is an amazing hair stylist. She was at the original salon in the Lower East Side, when I heard she was heading to the new salon in Gowanus to be a head stylist, there was no doubt I would follow her. I get my hair colored and cut here both from Gisella, she has taken my color from black to all different colors; pink, blonde, rainbow, green (basically all the colors of the rainbow). I literally recommend this salon to anyone, especially Gisella, she is amazing!!!! The salon is amazing as well as the staff, they are so sweet and accommodating. Highly recommend! read more

I got single process color at Fringe about 3 weeks ago. Everyone was super nice, and the colorist looked at a couple photos I brought for inspiration, and made suggestions accordingly. The final color was a little less auburn than I anticipated, but it looked really nice, so I left happy. That said, I have a bunch of grey hairs on my hairline, particularly on one side, and I was a little concerned that they were not penetrated deeply enough by the hair color. Now 3 weeks later, those hairs definitely have lost a lot of color, and it's to the point where I feel like I already need to touch up my roots. I'm not sure if this is due to the type of dye used or perhaps it wasn't left on long enough, but I'm disappointed that the color has not lasted longer. read more

Being an un-natural redhead takes work and how lucky I am to have Michelle as my stylist to make that color happen. When she took up residence at the Gowanus location from the LES, there was no doubt I had to follow her. She is patient and passionate about getting the color right, always checking in each time I visit to make sure I was happy with the color - or did I want to change it up a bit? Please do not ever go here!I warn you. I was here in July for a haircut etc. I paid and tipped. Last week in October my credit card was charged $141.00 unbeknownst to my knowledge. I called Fringe and they said oh yeah we were going to email you that there was a glitch in our system. I said I paid in July so the woman said she would refund me. That happened. However, 3 days later $141 was taken from my account again. Yet again I had to call Fringe and the woman I spoke to had a plethora of excuses...glitch in the system, I am not the only person this happening...you get the idea. After having to send two emails to prove I paid in July and several calls I am happy to report my money was refunded. Will this happen a third time? No chance. I called my bank and Fringe isn't allowed to just keep withdrawing money without my knowledge like they did the past two times. What a nightmare. After all this they lost me as a customer. read more

I got a deal on Gilt, so the price was good. The salon itself If is disappointing. I think they're trying for a shabby/chic look but up close, it's just shabby. Regardless, they had me waiting for a long time while my stylist cut someone else's hair, and when she finally did my hair, it wasn't the look we had discussed. She seems very aloof and uninterested. I've been going to Fringe to see Michelle for years... I will never let anyone else touch my hair! Once upon a time I was a red-red-redhead, with a shaved-up-the-back severely angled Aeon Flux bob. I decided I wanted to grow it out, and Michelle patiently shaped it into layers that did not look insane until it was chin length, and then shoulder length, and then LONG. Then I started sailing, like really sailing for a week at a time on the ocean. And I returned from a week of sailing with salt-fried, sun-bleached hair that might have best been described as... maybe orange? A little blonde? It wasn't what a shade I ever would have picked, but once it was on my head, I loved it. I didn't love the partial, uneven bleach job the sun had done on me, but Michelle was able to fix it, threading copper and blonde tones throughout. Her balayage should hang on a wall, it's that good. One of my favorite things about Michelle is that she is realistic and honest about what she thinks will look good and work for me... I am not a person who will come in every two weeks for a touch-up, and she has consistently given me colour that grows out beautifully. When I decided I wanted to go"even blonder", she boosted me without making a dramatic change, and even that turned out to be little much for me, so she toned it down to something a little more subtle (yes, I'm one of those: "Let's go big! But not really big. I mean I want a big change! But sort of a little big change".) Anyway, I get tons of compliments on how my "natural colour" is wherever I go. I never thought I'd give up my bright red hair, but Michelle has made blonde look so good on me that I now can't ever imagine going back! Love it, love her, and recommend Michelle and Fringe to the ends of the earth. Just don't fill up her calendar entirely... I need her in my life! read more

Just got my hair cut by Michelle today and I've never been happier with a haircut!!! I went in with a plan to do 70's bangs but due to the way my hair falls, Michelle advised against it (I really appreciate the honesty!!). Instead, she did an amazing cut with a lot of face framing layers and even went over my appointment time to make sure my hair was styled beautifully. Price for a haircut was only $85, which is a lot better than other Brooklyn salons that charge $175-250 for a cut. Already booked my next appointment. Thank you! read more

I came into Fringe to get bangs and Melody recommended the Cezanne treatment for my very curly and very poufy unruly hair. Let me tell you, it has changed my LIFE! I usually get my hair blown out every week because it's too difficult and incredibly time consuming for me to manage on my own, but since that day my hair has been so easy for me to do that I haven't needed to go get a blowout. My curls are still curly, but they're not frizzy anymore and when I wear my hair straight the humidity doesn't make it poufy either. My bangs came out perfect too. I can wear them straight down or swept to the side. They fit my face perfectly. I've received so many compliments on my hair and have already recommended Fringe to my friends. I had a great experience getting my hair cut with Suz at Fringe in Brooklyn. I've had bad experience getting my fringe cut before, and chose Suz based on some of the pictures of clients on her Instagram feed. Suz took the time to really understand what I wanted and consulted with me at every step of the way to make sure I was getting what I asked for. She blended my uneven layers at the back and re shaped my hair. I stepped out with exactly what I had in mind - it's the best fringe cut I've ever had. I had my hair cut by Michelle a little over a week ago. I freaking love this haircut. I moved back to NY six year ago from DC where I had a stylist that I loved. For years I went back to DC to get my hair cut but when I had a kid I couldn't do that anymore. I went to three very well regarded stylists in pricey salons before I went to Fringe. Even though I told every one of those stylists that I preferred my hair a little shorter, that I wanted something that was a bit messy and fun and that I wasn't afraid to play around a little, every last one of them gave me bobs, kept my hair on the longer side and wanted to grow my hair out (I had long hair for 35 years. I'm over it). When I told the last stylist I saw that I didn't want to look like a park slope mom (no offense park slope moms!) He nodded and then made me look like the president of the god damn PTA. So I did some research and went to Michelle. I am so glad I did. Here is why she's great: 1) She listened to me -- actually listened. And when I told her I didn't want mom hair she was like, "Hell no, that will not happen in my chair." 2) She gave me input. I could sort of describe what I wanted but I'm not a hair stylist. That's why I see a hair stylist! She looked at me she thought a bit, she talked to me about what she wanted to do. It made me a little nervous but also excited and then, 3) She executed the hell out f it, because Michelle is obviously a fucking pro (sorry, I swear when I'm excited), and gave me this cut that she called 'kind of a longish pixie,' but that I call magic. It's now been over a week. This cut looks great after a wash and a quick blow dry, but it also looks super cute when I tuck it behind my ears after I haven't washed it for a few days. I love this spot for hair cuts and color. I've been a regular for about a year and half now. I've had many blow outs at Fringe, with a variety of the stylists and they have all been super professional, friendly and have given me solid blow outs each time, often with amazing speed. I've gotten two haircuts from Gisela and they have been spot on, she totally gets me and understands what I'm after. I've also gotten ombre color by Gisela twice and have been pretty happy with the results. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her for cuts and color and as someone who has been coloring my hair since 7th grade, I can say that stylists who are great at both cut and color are few and far between, so I feel lucky to have encountered one! I appreciate all the advice on products and hair care that I've received from the various stylists and have been introduced to some great stuff that I now swear by like the Death Valley dry shampoo and the purple conditioner for color treated blonds. This is a personal preference, but I am someone who enjoys the pampering aspect of going to the hair salon, which is why I give 4 stars instead of 5. It's a very small, no frills place, without much ambiance, no fancy washing stations or gourmet snacks you might find at other really great salons. Those are just amenities but they are nice when you are treating yourself to hair services. Fringe is totally about the hair and they get it right, which is what matters most. read more
