Got Diana instead; she was friendly, nice, open, she listened to me but at the moment of cutting my hair, I was disappointed. One side of my head was left choppy and uneven. I went back for a fix - she tried to fix it but the damage was done. Now, I just have to let it grow out. My appointment was with Diana. As soon as I stepped into the salon, I felt she was judging me. To be fair, at the time, I was thinking that the place looked like a dump which she may have sensed. However, during the entire process, for which we had an hour appt and she used about 20mins, she seemed disgusted. She expressed her need to eat constantly which may have contributed to her overall grumpiness; she looked as though she was pregnant and I sympathize with her need to eat, which in that case, the professional thing to do would have been for her to taken 10 mins to do so. I would have preferred to wait a few extra minutes to see someone who would have made the process a pleasant experience. The hair cut itself was not terrible. It wasn't what I asked for. I told her what other stylists have been doing to my hair and asked her to avoid it, and I walked out with that same familiar style. From the way the hair washer was looking at me, I got the feeling this salon does not see a lot of clients who are of my racial background but I hope this was not the reason for her case of nastiness. At the end of the session, when she saw I was dissatisfied, she explained the length of the layers had to be limited so that the overall length of my hair would not become short, as if she expected me to believe this excuse as someone who was receiving her very first haircut. I told her the cut was fine and I didn't know how to explain what I want exactly so it would do. DIANA said that I should bring in a photo or try to describe the style I want better, then proceeded to walk towards the front desk then mumbled, not well, under her breath, NOT THAT I CARE. I was polite through the entire appointment and even left her a tip so that she wouldn't feel bad. And instead I walked away feeling bad. This last bit of attitude put the whole experience over the top!! It was highly unnecessary and for her to think that in an empty small 2 chair studio that I would not hear this hostile attitude is naive, unprofessional, and is very poor business practice. Her skill set is not quality enough to tolerate a nasty person. Cut was cheap however. read more

First haircut with Mark was great. Second? Ugh. I arrived on-time but had to sit and wait while he ate his lunch. He sent me to the shampoo girl with a "same thing as last time?". I had only been there once and since I'm growing my hair, it had been 2 months before... There was absolutely no discussion pre-shampoo. I wanted a light trim/shaping of the layers and got a heavy trim on the crown and front and pretty much nothing else. Over the next 2 weeks I fought with it daily and it looked awful. Just had a horrible experience here. Bear with me, it's not complicated but it's almost unreal how much basic courtesy was lacking. So I confirmed my appointment for cut and color at 7pm the day before. (I had booked a week ahead of time) I show up 5 minutes to 7, ahead of time, and I'm told I've come an hour late so they can only do the cut. I let them know I confirmed with one of their employees the day before that my appntmnt was at 7 but they don't even remark on that they just look at me like I'm at fault. No I'm sorry whatsoever. Blank uninterested stare. So I get it these things happen. It's after work and who knows who the employee that told me the wrong time was but my understanding has limits. I take it in stride and say ok let's do the cut and reschedule the color for later in the week. Again no ok great or thanks or sorry about that. So now no one tells me anything. No have a seat no one offers me coffee water not even a glance. So I sit patiently for 20 mins while they pretty much ignore me. I look around and think this through while slowly starting to realize that hm that lady's hair is going to take at least a half hour more and the guy doing it is my hairdresser. it's not ok to not only NOT apologize, mess up my appointment, act like it's my fault and on top of that not even let me know that I'm now going to be waiting for half an hour so they can rush through my what say...15 min haircut given that they close at 8. (Oof long sentence! But that's how ridiculous the situation felt) I know it's late in the day and you want to get in the clients and it sucks to have a no show client but isn't it basic basic business sense to say I'm sorry for your employees mistake and then not blame and ignore a new client? Finally I get up to say that I would appreciate it if you let me know exactly when this haircut is going to happen and it's not ok to not apologize at the very very least. they get all defensive and look at me like I'm being demanding and sort of but not really try to apologize (in this cold fake "i do care" way) giving me a breakdown of what they do when a client is late (which apparently does not include calling them) and claiming that they did say I'm sorry (nope I would have remembered). It didn't add up. And they didn't really care. Cool. So yelp I get to tell you what happened and this place gets to lose a loyal and punctual client who lives in the area. Would not recommend dealing with them. read more

This is the first review I have ever written about anything, but I was so happy with my experience that I have decided to take the time to write today. I have been to a number of hair stylists since I moved to Brooklyn from NYC, and was never happy with any of them. I recently had my hair cut by Diana and she was such a fresh breath of air. She knew exactly what I wanted, was a pleasure to talk to, and I looked great when I walked out the door. I can safely say that I will not consider getting my hair cut by anyone other than Diana as long as she is willing to do so. read more

Jessica is the BEST!!!! She gives an awesome haircut. I have been to many places over the years and have gone to various places for haircuts whether it be a $15 haircut or a $150, I would have to say I haven't always been satisfied with the results. With Jessica you get exactly what you ask for. She totally listens to what you are asking for. Over the years I have been to hairdressers that take it upon themselves to just do what they want. That didn't happen with Jessica. I have very long hair and I am always very apprehensive when getting a cut, afraid they may take too much off. I have never been so comfortable before. Jessica made me feel at ease i never looked down at the floor once, sually something i do typically. I highly recommend the salon and Jessica. i love diana! she's super quick and such a doll! i'm usually in and out in under 2 hours and i get a cut and highlights. the prices are pretty reasonable, they do tend to change from time to time. but compared to manhattan, it's a bargain! just remember your checkbook or cash, as credit cards are not accepted. i have sent many friends to diana b/c she is the best! read more

I do not get my hair cut often, but when I do, I go to Salon Van Sickel. Mark is amazing and has taught me a whole new way to dry my naturally curly hair. I had no idea I was doing it wrong all these years and contributing to the frizz I used to have. The price - $45.00 for a cut - can not be beat, and the location is great. I started going here with a friend who had discovered the Salon by accident. I had been going to the same place for years and was reluctant to go somewhere new. But, I am thankful I did. Jessica has cut my hair now for over a year and each haircut has been better than the last. No matter what my request or which star's picture I bring in she always does a phenomenal job and I leave feeling as famous and fabulous as the star in the picture I brought. read more

So sorry that I have to write this negative review, and so very disappointed. I have been a loyal customer of Mark's for more than 2 years. I have never, ever just popped in, have always scheduled my appointments. In the wintertime it's a little tricky, since Mark leaves for 2 months every year. So, as always, I scheduled my appointment well in advance of his return. Did I mention that I do not live in the neighborhood, I drive more than 35 minutes and then struggle to park in Brooklyn Heights to give Mark my business. But that was all worth it. I have always been very very pleased with his haircuts. Last week, (April) was to be my "after Mark's vacation" haircut. Have been waiting for it since February. Once I got to the neighborhood and parked I called to see if he was running on time and was told that "sorry, we scheduled you with the other stylist and Mark cannot take you". I was astonished. I asked to speak to Mark and was sure he would try to fit me in or make it up to me somehow. But no, nothing, nada. He didn't seem particularly sorry. Didn't offer to reschedule when it was convenient for me and obviously could not care less. I do regret that I will not be going back since I was always so pleased with my cut, but there are too many talented stylist around to allow myself to be treated so poorly.
