I think I found my hair soul mate. I have met someone who is as meticulous as I am. From the moment we met Russel's energy was great. I knew right away that he knew what he was doing when he cut my bangs, which I am the most picky about. Earning my trust from the start of the appointment was huge, but his skill and attention to detail continued throughout the appointment. He told me about my hair, troubleshot my scalp issues, and he took the time to make sure the hair in my bangs was equal on both sides - something that seems so obvious, but no stylist has done in over 16 years. He used to own a salon in SF and has been in the industry a long time, which shows through in everything he does. I already booked an appointment to come back in two weeks for a color. I should also say this was my first time here, because I normally book an appointment near my office in Manhattan, but I'm glad I came. The salon is great, clean, and I love how they display their work in beautiful photography on the walls. I've definitely found my new salon. Bonus: they have a loyalty program!! Just love Betina and everyone at Union Beauty Salon. Came to the salon a few years' back when my beloved hair stylist moved out of state. Betina REALLY knows how to do a short wavy/borderline curly cut beautifully. She turned my fussy, frumpy mom 'do into something that feels smart, sassy and fun. She absolutely gets my willingness to put in minimal styling work and we've worked together to find a great cut that really consistently looks and feels great without a ton of work every day. If I have tweaks depending on the time of year, she always knows how to onboard my requests. I book every three months and inevitably, on the week that it's time to go in, I question whether I could stretch it further as my hair still looks great. That's a true testament to a great cut - it grows out well and I love all the stages along the way. So glad to have found Betina and I highly recommend her. read more

I've never given a review before, but I'm compelled to give one because of the two excellent haircuts I got by Guy. I've had fairly long dirty blonde hair for about 10 years and wanted a change. After my friend got a short cut that looked great, I asked her where she had gotten it and she directed me to Guy. Upon arrival, everyone at Union Beauty was friendly and professional. Guy ended up cutting off about 10 inches and transformed my hair into a much more stylish bob (he even put the hair tied and in a baggie for ease of sending to a charity). I was super pleased with it and got tons of compliments! So, when I decided I want to lighten my hair (to about what it looked like when I was a kid), I showed him a few pictures but really left the ball in his court. I sent a cancellation email a few hours after making a last minute appointment and they still charged me more than half the cost of the full service. I explained that I had a loss in my family and the appointment was made within the 24 hour window, with little to no consideration they gleefully charged me. As a business owner myself I would never treat customer who may come back for services in the future in this manner. read more

All the compliments and raves that had been written about him were 100% true. I have been getting my hair done by Laurie at Union Beauty for about 3 years and she is one of the best stylists I've ever had work on my hair. She is very talented and professional--amazing with dimensional color and can either stick with the same thing or suggest something new that turns out well (I've been sticking with the most recent "something new" for a while now since I like it so much). She is also friendly and down to earth so easy to have a conversation with. The salon space is not too big, not too small, has a very chill atmosphere that is both welcoming and fun. I'm sensitive to noise, and they seem to control the noise level better than most salons despite the interior being mostly hard surfaces. It's not a quiet space but the balance between music volume, voice level, and hair dryer is very well managed. read more

I feel beautiful, glamorous, and my hair has so much more movement after Jon had his way with my hair. Thank you so much for giving me the first real and noticeable haircut I've had in years here. From the beginning I was greeted with "can i take your coat", "would you like some wine", and was treated to a wonderful wash by the every so knowledgeable Yenesy. She was explaining alot about hair color and the ingredients used in the mostly plant based shamp/cond they use (which smells divine and like real orange oil, cause' it is!) I have been dreading the day I would need a hair cut for a long time. I've been growing out my hair for 2-3 years, not for any particular reason but just because I have tried several hair salon before and have gone home crying, upset, mad at myself for cutting it to begin with. After 2-3 failed attempts to get a style I loved I gave up, TILL YESTERDAY :) I have lived in the neighborhood for years and have walked passed the salon often enough to peak my interest, and question "maybe this salon can do a cut for me that I can be happy with" Taking a huge risk, I went on to yelp looked at the reviews and found a review raving about Jon, how he listened to her, cut and styled her hair to her liking and she left happy. So I went ahead and booked my apt for April 4 (yesterday). All day I was nervous, wanted to back out and cancel but i didn't (clearly lol) 6 o'clock came and I went to the salon with my mother, we checked in, the front desk was very nice and welcoming. Took our coats and asked if we wanted something to drink. I didn't even have time to sit down in the waiting area before I was told Jon was ready for me, speedy (Loved it). I sat in his chair and started to explain to him my concerns and worries, and my dreadful experiences. Told him I avoid hair salons, but I'm donating it so I hope I'm making the right decision to cut it all off. I showed him a picture of what I would like, the length I would like my hair to be when finished, and he seemed to know and understand exactly what I was hoping for. We were both on the same page before starting. When we were finished I could really notice and appreciate how he really recreated the look I was looking for. I walked out very happy and pleased with my cut. Everyone was complementing my new look. Post it on IG/FB. I got over 32 likes and comments. I tell everyone all day everyday to go see Angela at Union Beauty. First let me say i love love love me some Angela. I will follow her anywhere. No one has ever been able to cut my hair like she can. She is honest and realistic and willing to take a risk if you want to go on a journey with her. You just know she understands your hair and who you are right away and can tell you that asymmetrical bob you show her on your phone just won't work with your hair texture or your morning routine, but gets what you are trying to do and suggests something else fabulous. While her cuts are amazing, you should see her color. She pioneered the reverse ombre on my head and i get stopped in the street. So anyway, the best thing happened. She opened her own salon! it is tiny and gorgeous and so fun. It is well worth a trip to Park Slope no matter where you live (i am now in JC and so committed, i am willing to take three trains for Angela's magic). I was set to have a consultation with Mark and he helped me discuss my options thoroughly and explained everything really well. Although after our discussion my hair wasn't healthy enough to bleach, I left with a lot more knowledge about my hair. When I leave her I feel like a million bucks, and get so many complements on my cut. Bettina really knows what suits you and takes time to understand what your needs are. This is not a review for the actual haircutting services, as I didn't have the opportunity to have my hair cut - this is for their poor customer service and unreasonable late policy. I had a 7pm appt. tonight and was running late (my train was delayed, we live in NY - it happens. Not the salon's problem, but again, it happens). I didn't want to try to call them bc we would get cut off each time the train moved stations, but at 7:06pm they called me. I caught "we have a 15 minute late policy" before the train pulled out of the station and I got cut off. I called back at the next train station and said I was a stop away and thought I could get there by 7:15pm and would call when I got out of the station. I exited the station at 7:12pm and started hauling a** through the rain, calling them back at the same time. I said I was 2 minutes away and would be there right at 7:15pm. The girl was already telling me I would have to reschedule bc their late policy is 15 minutes. I said I would be there. I arrived at 7:16pm. 7:16pm. I'm soaked, having ran through the rain, having told them I leave on vacation the next day and just wanted to get my haircut before then. They turned me away, for being 1 minute later than their policy. It would have taken them 1 minute of leniency to earn a new neighborhood customer, but instead, they're letting that 1 minute make a new detractor for their business. I'm sympathetic to policies and understand why they're in place, but 1 minute. 1 MINUTE. Having just moved to this neighborhood I was looking forward to finding my new regular spot. I'll spend my money supporting a different neighborhood salon and will suggest others do the same. read more

I just got my hair cut at Union Beauty. Overall I was displeased with the whole salon experience. I instantly didn't trust my hairdresser, who was unable to guide me towards what kind of haircut I might want or might look good on me. Because of this I ended up asking for the most basic trim possible, just a shape up of what I already had, and even that made me very nervous. It turned out fine, but didn't seem worth $90. She was also very clumsy and rough (kept knocking into me, slapping me with the cord to the hairdryer, and yanking at my hair), and didn't seem to be taking my haircut very seriously/was more invested in talking the whole time. The salon itself is dingy and a little cluttered. I regret spending money here. read more

I came here twice and will not be returning. Friends of mine raved about Angela, so after several years I decided to bite the bullet and get a proper haircut at a fancy salon. My first experience was good. Angela took the time to get to know my hair and how it works and made recommendations for a cut that would work well. I was a bit taken aback when I came to pay. I knew it was going to be hella expensive, but it was my understanding that salon owners don't get tipped - only workers. But when I swiped my card, I was given choices of how much to tip, with no option of not to tip at all. I certainly wasn't going to make a scene, but since it was the owner herself putting through the payment, I would've thought she herself would have removed the tip option. So I spent more than expected, but I got a great haircut. I returned about six months later for a follow up and had a not great experience. For one, I was on time (early, even) and was told to wait and Angela would be with me soon. From where I was sitting I could see her working on another client and not anywhere near finished. I started to get a bad feeling and wonder just how long the wait would be. Yes, I could have and should have asked, but I also shouldn't have just been left there sitting and waiting for 15+ minutes without any explanation (especially for the prices here!). Eventually (20 minutes in, perhaps) Angela came over, acknowledged my presence, apologized for the delay and said she'd be with me soon. Better than nothing, but that point I was really unhappy and it set the tone for the rest of the appointment. I also felt she was rushed this time, perhaps because of running late. The first time she showed me how to pin my hair a certain way when it's wet to give it some more body on top and suggested I buy some of the clips. The second time, she asked if I'd done that and I answered, "No, I couldn't figure out what they were called to order them." Instead of telling me what to look for (or, shocker, saying, "just take a few of mine" - ie. the ones she just took out of my hair and was probably about to throw away), she acted like I hadn't said anything at all. The last thing I'll mention seems petty, but I think is worth mentioning. Not everyone likes to chat. And not everyone likes to be chatted at/to. It would be good to pick up on the client's cues and back off a little if they don't seem to be in a chatty mood, or the chatty type. Some people are good at that. I did not find Angela to be so. She is lovely and means well, I know, but it was a bit much for me. read more

I just moved to Brooklyn and was in desperate need of a cut and color after getting settled in. After reading online reviews, I decided to try Union Beauty Salon and I'm so glad I did! I've worn my naturally curly hair in a platinum blonde pixie cut for the last 5 years. As anyone who has gone blonde knows - there are multiple different shade possibilities. I prefer an "ashier blonde" that is more white/blonde and this can be a challenging color to achieve without going either too yellow/brassy or too grey/lavender. I worked with Russel this morning who I think gave me the best version of this color that I've had to date. He achieved a beautiful icy, white blonde that really complements my skin tone. He was also able to cut my coarse, naturally curly, partly grey, and differently textured hair into a beautifully structured pixie cut that frames my face and is easy to manage. I have definitely found my new salon and my new colorist/stylist and am looking forward to becoming a regular customer of Russel's and Union Beauty! Additionally, the entire salon experience was fantastic, from the front desk staff, to the assistants, to the email follow-up post-appointment. Was half hour late to an appointment, completely my fault as I had 15min later in my calendar and told the front desk I was stuck in traffic which is another 15min. Once I arrived despite apologizing profusely, was told by the stylist they were "too annoyed" to do my hair at all. No cut, no color, simply that I didn't respect their time. I apologized again, begged for at least a cut as totally understand color wouldn't be possible, but zero compassion, sympathy, or humanity that things happen and was leaving for a BabyMoon the next morning. I had an amazing experience at Union Beauty! I really enjoyed working with Ebony for a partial balayage and cut. She took the time to hear what I was looking for and ask questions to make sure she understood, and I ended up with an even more perfect multidimensional, low-maintenance balayage and haircut than I was imagining. After I complained that my hair isn't able to hold a curl, she also offered to give me loose waves after the haircut, which ended up looking great and being a lovely surprise! Ebony was really easy to chat with and made the whole experience a really nice one, despite the fact that we were all masked and taking COVID precautions. The precautions made me feel very safe. One other thing about how great Union Beauty is - I mis-judged how long the balayage/cut would take, and had to take a work call while Ebony was cutting my hair and while I was checking out. Ebony and the other staff were incredibly gracious about it and made sure I was able to take the call with no issues! read more

I walked in with overgrown and damaged hair and not only got a lovely and healthy trim but also bangs that work so well for me. I'll start by saying that I do like the staff, decor and cleanliness at Union Beauty & was really hoping to have finally found a local place vs always going into the city for my hair. But I just absolutely hate the outcome of my haircut and highlights I had done by Meg last week and the messed up even worse redo today. The single process was fine last month, but the haircut and highlights last week and attempted redo today were beyond terrible. I called the very next day as I was so unhappy, and had phenomenal customer service with Teddy on the phone, and a quick call back from yet another stylist (Heather) who was really nice and understanding to help schedule. I was available that day to come in, but they couldn't see me till Wed as I had to see my original stylist and she was busy. Well, she covered up my highlights with what now looks like an overall single process. That's not what the service was to fix it, but that's what the outcome now looks like. So my highlights I spent I think $150'ish on are no where to be seen, on top of the $90 haircut. Money well spent (not!). So that's upsetting. The haircut last week was exactly what I didn't want as I wanted long layers after we cut off about 2" of the length. I was left with a very blunt cut which I didn't want. Today during the redo, Meg did some long later cutting, but the front now has a 90 degree cut and about a 3" difference vs a nice blended 45 degree angle to blend. It looks like I myself cut out a chunk of hair. Sadly, my haircut looks horrible, and my all over color has no highlights which is what I paid for. Meg told me she owned a hair salon before, but that doesn't give credibility as far as I'm concerned with the outcome. Again, everyone else was doing a very nice job on all their clients. I just wish I had one of the other stylists for my hair. read more
