I'n new to the Lakeview area coming from the burbs and have always had a difficult time finding a hair stylist that doesn't send me out looking like a soccer mom (no offense to soccer moms) so I was apprehensive about trying someone new but Miranda was absolutely fantastic! She really made sure to hear what I wanted and asked a lot of questions to make sure everything she was doing was on par with my expectations which was very appreciated. I left with an amazing, drastic new cut and color that was exactly what I had pictured going in (no soccer mom 'do!) and immediately made another appointment to see her for touch ups in a couple months! I'm not ashamed to say--I bought the Living Social deal for the brazilian and eyebrow wax. I had never been to this salon before, but had seen so many great reviews, so I thought, why not? I was immediately greeted by Rosann, who was going to do both waxings--lucky her!! She was so friendly and made me feel very comfortable. First, she did the brows, which took no time at all. She def knew what I wanted and didn't try to do anything crazy with my brows. They use hard wax which is supposed to hurt less. I found that to be pretty accurate, but I mean...how can a brazilian be PainLESS? Never. When I moved to Chicago last year, I was hard-pressed to find a hair salon that suited my perfectionistic and particular (and persnickety???) needs. I tried multiple salons in the Gold Coast and Lincoln Park area till my boyfriend's sister-in-law referred me to Michael (color) and Brad (cut) at Fringe. I now will not go to anyone else for hair. Michael is just as perfectionistic as I am and has a fantastic eye for just the right shade and amount highlights, and Brad is fantastic with long hair. Brad is one of those rare hairdressers who actually encourages you not to do anything different or drastic, but suggests that you just maintain very polished-looking long layers. He's also an entertaining conversationalist! Fringe is easy to locate, and there is plenty of parking on the street right in front of the salon. So I called my old salon to find my favorite guy and he left so I had to start from scratch. I just read about Fringe in Allure magazine so I figured I'd give it a try. Quite a gamble really considering I didn't know anyone who'd gone there nor did I have a name recommendation. I called for an appointment and got one in the next day--I described my hair over the phone and was recommended Sanjoy. I showed up for my appointment a little early but everyone was very nice and offered me water or tea. For my haircut Sanjoy was great. He explained what he saw as the problems with the shape of my previous haircut and how he could make some minor changes in the back to give me the look I want. He was very descriptive and was sure to check with me before cutting in the back to be sure it wasn't going too short. At the end of the appointment I had a great haircut for a good price. Okay, so I just called after reading about this place on Yelp. I'm headed to FL and don't dare go without getting the Brazilian Keratin treatment first! Although I've never had it done before, my Mom lives in FL and the last time I saw her hair, any doubts I had about it were put to bed. Tara answered the phone and was a total sweetheart, very friendly, laid back and professional. She took time to see if I had any questions about the process since it's my first time which I really appreciated. This 5 star rating is for stylist and color expert Michael Mullen. I really do not know the rest of the salon and staff that well, but Dawn, the owner is great. Patrick Russo had been cutting and coloring my hair for 23 years (longest relationship I have ever had with anyone). When Patrick moved to Arizona, I was worried that I would not find another stylist as good as Patrick. Patrick recommended Michael Mullen at Fringe Salon in Wicker Park. I have now had 4 haircuts and color by Michael and I could not be happier. Michael is very personable and professional. He listens to your concerns and gives you the best service possible. Fringe has very fair prices for a city salon. Parking is easy. Staff is pleasant and accomodating; as long as Michael is there, I will going to Fringe. read more

Right now all I feel that I really need to say is: WOW :) I seriously love my hair right now. But since that isn't very specific, I'll elaborate. I'd been longing for this sexy, asymmetrical, Maja Ivarsson-meets-Juliet Simms type of hairstyle (I think it's called an undercut, but I might be wrong...) for a long time, but hadn't had the guts to go through with it - I was afraid that anyone I went to would do something horribly wrong and I'd spend months hating it... I'm really picky about my hair! Then a lovely friend of mine, Sarah C., recommended that I go to Christina. I had already met her through another close friend so I decided to go for it! And honestly, I have been to some really, really good salons, here in Chicago and elsewhere, but Christina and I just clicked! I sent her a few photos through Facebook the night before to give her an idea of what I wanted ahead of time. I also brought the pictures I had in to the salon, and she understood exactly what I wanted - there was no, "Oh, but I think it would look better like this..." or "Are you really sure you want to do that?" While waiting for my hair appointment for the first time at fringe about 2 months back, I overheard some of the employees talking. At first I thought it was gossipy, but as i started to eavesdrop I heard them mentioning how "don-the-woman" (the owner of fringe) had yelled at one of her receptionists on being late. Sounds reasonable for being late right? Well the poor receptionist had gotten HIT by a CAB on her way to work - and as a response, the owner had said something along the lines of, "I know you got hit by a car and all, but it's really important to be on time". I was floored. I almost wanted to say something and ask if she was okay - but I didn't want them to know i was listening or being too nosey. Stephanie C. in her review below had mentioned the owner messing up on her hair and talking down to her understudy... she wasn't lying. I can't believe someone like this woman holds her employees, let alone keeping her business running. On a lighter note, from what I've experienced everyone is very friendly, professional and talented here. It's just a shame they have to work under someone like this woman. I stumbled upon Fringe salon when I saw a Groupon for an eyebrow wax and tint. It was 2 years since I last had my eyebrows done because it took that long for them to grow back- just don't get me started on that! Danielle was so amazing. I told her about my trauma and she was very reassuring. She took it step by step with me, explained the coloring process and showed me pictures of previous clients with a similar color so I know what to expect. In the end I loved them!!!! The enhancement has made such a huge difference to my face. Fast forward a month later and I have a wedding coming up. I decided to return to the salon to have my makeup done and let me tell you, ANDREA DOES NOT DISAPPOINT! TALK ABOUT TALENT!!! First of all, she's gorgeous and her make up is flawless, so right away you know you are in good hands. Second, I am no stranger to getting my makeup done for events so I have some standards. I do not like a natural look when I am paying to have it done so I showed her a few pictures and she made some recommendations and color modifications that would make my eyes appear bigger and pop. She also did a great job working with my rosacea. I cannot explain the confidence boost she gave me when I looked at myself in the mirror when she was done. I received so many compliments all night that I truly didn't want to wash my face when it was all over. She is my NEW go-to girl. Believe me you will not be disappointed. I have nothing but nice things to say about every aspect of this salon. I have been coming to Susan [esthetician] at Fringe for at least 2 years. At first is was just for her amazing, practically pain-free waxing, then I began to add in microderm/facials when I became engaged. Somewhere along the way she recommended Adam [stylist] to me and instantly fell in love with him as well. To start, the front desk staff is always friendly, helpful, and once they see you a few times remember you by name when you call and when you come in. I have felt at home there from the first time I walked in. And then there is my sweet Susan. I was so amazed at my first wax experience with her, I ditched my previous woman and stuck with Susan. Over time she began my facials and my skin has never looked better. Not to mention the care and nurturing that she puts into the facial itself. So worth every penny. And then there is Adam. He will cut your hair exactly as you ask and style it with the hands of a perfectionist. I immediately booked him after my first appointment with him to be my wedding stylist and could not have been more pleased. I came in for a trial the month before and even though it was beautiful, he wanted to try a different method of what I wanted [fingerwaves] so did a second one just for good measure. He set my fingerwaves the night before me wedding and they came out PERFECT. Not to mention the rest of the hair which was in a gorgeous one-of-a-kind loose, low 'updo' I literally heard about how amazing my hair was all night. He also did my stepmother and mother-in-law's hair that day beautifully. I heart you Fringe. Originally went in blind not knowing anyone who has ever been to this place, but I read some good Yelp reviews and live right around the corner so I took the plunge and made a keratin straightening appointment. I've been here a few times and have seen a number of fabulous folks and as of late I've been working with Patrick who I LOVE. He's done a ridiculously great job transforming my rather curly strands into sleek, wonderfulness....I can't thank him enough for being able to have withstood the 100+ degree weather the other day. In addition to hair, I also go to Fringe to get my brows done and I must say they've always been marvelous. I am rather picky about who does my brows as I like a good shape and don't want them to be overdone...every time I leave Fringe they always look perfectly arched and cleaned up. read more

Do I want to pay $20 or less for a haircut? Yes. Am I ok with paying more for a haircut if it ends up looking uh-mazing? Duh. I bought a Groupon...or maybe it was a Living Social deal?...anyway, I bought something and came in to get my hair did. The deal was -- cut, partial highlights, deep conditioning treatment. Let me preface the review of my experience by saying that prior to this visit, I had probably only been in a salon for a cut or an up-do about 6 times in my life. And I had a few stupid highlights done years ago so my hair was virutally color-free. So...I make an appointment with a random and show up to embrace my fate. Kasia, hello. :) She listened to me, understood me and we just clicked. I told her I wanted highlights that you could sorta see but not really see. I got exactly that. I told her I wanted her to chop off a bunch of the dead ends (I think she ended up taking off at least 6 inches) and she did just that...and layred the rest...AND made it a cut that worked well with both curly and straight hair (I'm naturally curly). It was such a great experience that I am now one of her regulars. Look at me, all grown up now! Going to the salon like I'm SOMEBODY. Also -- she did a single process color for me a few visits after the first (told her I was a natural redhead but the red was lightening up over the years; she said she wanted to see me a bit darker) and I've been getting it done ever since. I love it, and everyone I know loves it. I'm 8 year old redhead Kristina all over again! So happy. Also -- great product suggestions but let me stress that Kasia is NOT pushy with products. I ask her about things she uses and she advises me accordingly. Never once has she just tacked something on and been like, 'Um...you need this. You're buying it.' Go see Kasia, go see Kasia, go see Kasia. Or anyone there, really, as they all seem great. But mostly, go see Kasia. I reviewed Fringe awhile back giving it one star after receiving a bad cut from an inexperienced stylist. However, recently my stylist moved from Orbit to Fringe. I highly recommend Matthew Derry. He does a great job on both cut and color. You can't go wrong with him. This is Orbit's loss and Fringe's gain. He's not cheap, Fringe charges by the experience level of the stylist. Tori was super friendly and paid careful attention when I explained to her what I wanted my color to look like...and she hit it spot on! Brightened up my highlights and did a great blow-out on my long, thick hair. I couldn't be happier! I will defiantly be going back to have Tori color and cut my hair again in about 8 weeks. It's my birthday, so I splurged a little bit to get my hair did. Being new to the city, i checked out my fearless yelpers' reviews of places and decided on Fringe, as its more reasonably priced then many of the other salons in the neighborhood (uh, hello art & science?) I called specifically asking for Aaron, since he had so many great reviews on yelp. He was able to fit me in the next day and gave me a great, sassy cut. Now, I have short hair, and while its not hard to give me a good cut, its pretty easy to eff-up and have me leave looking like a boy. But Aaron was on his A game. While there, on his mirror, its noted that he just got a promotion! When i asked what that was about, it just meant that he was charging $7 bucks more for a haircut basically. Now mind you, this sign is right next to another posting that says they were voted best hair salon on yelp (or was it...gasp...city search?) Either way, this is where the meeting of reviewers and merchants goes down the great big tube with public reviews. Because he is soooo good at his job and people appreciate him, he was able to charge $47 bucks for a haircut; simple supply and demand of economics. But for some of us, keeping a little tid-bit of info about how awesome he is would better be put in my pocket, especially when I have to get my hair cut every 5 weeks. Bummer But go to Aaron. He deserves it, he's got it; personable, nice, quick, and creative, he's what everyone wants in a good stylist. Unfortunately, for me, I'll prolly be going to him for major styles a few times a year, cuz, you know, $47 bucks is just gonna keep going up, and trim ups shouldn't be so expensive. read more

I found Fringe on yelp and went in with no expectations/ideas other than just getting a basic trim. Upon first walking in, everyone in there seemed very friendly and welcoming. Christina was my stylist & she started off with a great consultation... She's super sweet and put up with my indecisiveness quite well. She even explained little tips along the way to help me out. I had two blow out appointments scheduled on a Saturday morning for a wedding. We arrived to the salon and we were told by Deena that she did not have time to complete the scheduled appointment as she was running behind. She made her co worker complete both blow outs which delayed our appointments further and ultimately made us late to the wedding. I tried to alleviate the situation by asking the hair stylist to skip washing my hair and put it in a low bun instead. They charged me $95 for an updo, which I found to be outrageous given the situation. Overall, this place is lacking effective customer service and appears to be run by unprofessionals read more

I have been trying to find a good salon for the past few years and was constantly switching trying to find the right fit, I am kind of picky about my hair! I started going to Fringe over a year ago and I have to say that they're simply the best! The front desk staff has always been accommodating and friendly. The prices are fair and I think you sincerely get your money's worth. My stylist (Ashley) is a great listener and very talented. I will be coming back here as long as I live in the Wicker Park area. I was nervous all day because of my appointment and couldn't believe myself for even doing such a thing to myself, but my groupon was expiring and that drove me to finally use it. Having been to a gynecologist and being able to handle the awkwardness there, and having had my tattoos lasered off without lidocaine and being able to handle the *intense* pain there, I figured I should be able to deal with a Brazillian and as my friend told me: "whatever you've got, they've probably seen worse." I scheduled my appointment online, which is super convenient and awesome, and landed the lucky Susan DeChant for my untamed snatchuation. She immediately put me at ease and distracted me from the weirdness of the experience with good conversation. With the hard wax, the pain wasn't even that bad, and the appointment was over before I knew it. She offered me a 25% discount if I scheduled my next appointment and I was happy to do so. After all, it's bikini season and I'm moving to a building with an outdoor pool so I don't want to scare my new neighbors! read more

I switched from Art & Science Wicker Park to Fringe after a bad experience there (for my wedding, no less!). I can't repeat how ridiculously pleased I am with Fringe, and with my haircutter guy (stylist) there, Aaron. Here's why. First of all, I'm *really* low-maintenance when it comes to my hair. I kind of know how to turn on a blow dryer but I have no idea how to fanangle it with a brush. When I want to look more finished I bust out a flat iron, but that happens maybe once every couple of months. And I have a LOT of hair, and it does its own thing. What this translated to in the past was asking for layers and getting some 1994 Jennifer Aniston thing (my hair *does* do that well) or letting it grow out and putting it in a pony/bun all the time. Enter Aaron. This guy is really chill and easy to get along with, and I felt like he listened to me and "got" what I was looking for. And he "got" my hair-- it's not huge anymore (well, a little, but not in a bad way), and he's the FIRST STYLIST EVER to get what I meant when I said I was low-maintenance (others: "oh well you'll just have to blow dry it in the morning and go!" NO). My hair does its thing, but the cut is so good that it makes that thing a good thing. I personally think it looks best after I've slept on it. Awesome! Also, the price is right, $20 less per cut than I was paying at Art & Science. So now I go more than twice a year, and I think my hair has been healthier & cuter for it. YAY AARON! read more

Aaron M. had been my hairdresser in Portland, and when I found out he was moving to Chicago I couldn't wait for him to get established at a salon here so I could trust someone with my hair again! I place some pretty difficult projects in front of stylists, and Aaron has never flinched. He's performed bona fide coloring miracles on my hair, plus has never let me down with anything from a severe color change to a routine touch-up to a walk-in bang trim. Add to that that he always, ALWAYS ensures my hair looks as fantastic as possible when I leave (careful blow-outs, loads of attention, etc.). I have finalllllly found a place I want to regularly come! After four years of searching for a place I want to regularly go, my experience at Fringe last week has me locked in for life. It was a raining the day of my appointment, I didn't have an umbrella and I was rushing to make it on time. My hair got pretty tangly in the process and my original stylist was pretty frustrated trying to get the tangles out. I felt really bad about it until Natalia came over and was beyond nice/understanding about it. She took over the appointment and I'm so glad she did. She was one of the nicest people I've ever come across in Chicago and told me how to keep my hair tangle free and took the time to help me out. She even bought me Moroccan oil - I almost cried it was so nice of her to do! I will be back for anything I need just because of Natalia. She has my business for life. The miracle that Molly pulled on my hair was unreal. I came in with a faded ombre of about three different colors, (don't use Ion dye at home, folks) and I walked out with a gorgeous, even, frosty white/grey bayalage. She was very down to earth, easy to talk to, and this was probably the fastest hair appointment I've had in my life. The salon is very open and clean, and you don't feel claustrophobic around other clients getting their hair done. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating too. Susan is great for both waxing and facials. I got a facial once when I was breaking out, and it really calmed and cleared my skin. She uses Dermatologica products, which I like because they are more natural, no perfumey scents. The owner and staff are also friendly and professional.
