If you're new to Michelin-starred dining or fine dining in general, you might find Frevo's paint-by-numbers, utterly predictable, "French-inspired" menu interesting. We were bored almost comatose by it. Let's break down those numbers: - Small bites to kick things off that are more interesting than the main courses? Check. In this case, the Sweet Nori (shrimp aji, trout roe, shishito pepper) and Artichoke (truffle, doughnut). Both were good, both totally common. - Asian flavors (usually Japanese) incorporated throughout to give the menu an "international" edge (and also because Western/European flavors are boring)? Check. Nori this, shishito that, kombu X, yuzu Y....you get what I'm saying. - The seafood course that's basically deconstructed Japanese kaiseki fare? Yup. In this case, the Bluefin Tuna course with pineapple and kombu. See also, the Sea Bass dish with white asparagus and yuzu kosho (I kid you not). - The random spotlight dish on one pedestrian ingredient? Yup. For Frevo, this was the Carrot course, done in more ways than you knew carrot could be done. Bugs Bunny would have been proud. - The random bread course that's a really big deal for some reason but you never get enough bread to last more than one course? Check. In this case, Frevo's crisp, housemade Focaccia, which was served with just enough stracciatella to provide a small jolt of carb-y goodness but not enough to accompany us through our next course. - The obligatory meat course with sad slab of meat accompanied by sad side vegetable? You know it. For Frevo, they at least wrapped their sad meat (Iberico Pork) with their sad vegetable (cucumber)....but it was still sad enough to make angels cry. - Multiple dessert courses that never quite hit the spot? Si. We got a 36-Month Comte Cheese and honey mixture (the most interesting one), followed by a wild strawberry tart with arugula ice-cream (berry tart and lettuce ice-cream sound better on paper than in reality), and a couple of petit four nibbles whose flavors I've completely forgotten. Ultimately, Frevo is an expensive, beautifully plated nap that left me wishing they had spent less time deconstructing carrots and more time designing a memorable meal. If you're looking to actually be inspired by what's on your plate, save your money and look elsewhere--you'll find more culinary soul in a street taco.

This restaurant has been on my list for a long time and we had high expectations, but unfortunately was let down. The menu looks really good and it started off strong, but then went downhill from there. For the artichoke, definitely add the uni -- it made it so much better (though wish they added more uni). We did one carrot and one carabinero to try both -- honestly just stick with the carrot, it's not worth the additional money. The others didn't have great flavors and textures overall, quite forgettable. There's just too much going on sometimes. I didn't like the cheese with the penultimate dessert. The wine list was fine, but definitely overpriced. We paid a hefty price for a mediocre dinner and would've much rather spent that money elsewhere. The space was really nice though, and loved the "speakeasy" aspect.

WOW where do I even begin? First of all, this isn't just a textbook copied and pasted Michelin star restaurant, this is a cool Michelin star restaurant hidden inside a snug art gallery. The entrance to the restaurant is literally through a piece of artwork! The vibe was upscale without being stiff and cold. The entire staff was lovely. We love an open kitchen view so we opted for the counter seating ($245pp). The seating comes with 9 courses, two being desserts-- it doesn't seem like a lot, but we didn't leave feeling hungry. The timing of each course was perfect. We didn't feel like the meal was dragging on or that we were being rushed. The food itself was good, I don't really have any complaints. There were some stand out dishes such as: butternut squash (with uni supplement), pretzel with the smoke tofu spread (so so good), wagyu & the 36 month comte cheese dessert (THIS was divine, what a perfect way to end the meal. I fear that I may be obsessed with the explosion of flavors this dish created). The wine pairing was fun too-- made the meal a little more pricey but that is to be expected. We had an amazing experience! 5/5 stars for me :)

Food here was very good. Enjoyed most of the courses and thought they were great flavors, except for the carrot dish with almond and red curry. Texture was a total miss on it and the flavors didn't work well. Comte cheese dessert was outstanding. Opted for the wine pairing and I was disappointed by it as I didn't feel that the wine selections paired well with the food courses they were tied to. Service was top notch and the interior was nice.

Kind of disappointing. The first few dishes were interesting enough to keep me engaged, but after that it kind of fell flat. Not sure how they have a Michelin star, but I will say the service is amazing. Do not recommend overall.

Frevo was a cool dining experience striking balance between casual, fine dining and bit hipster. Located behind an art gallery, you wait among the artwork until the seating starts. The restaurant is a bit low lit but lighting focuses on the food. Staff immediately greet you with plenty around and are quite personable and attentive. They have some private tables in addition to counter. Counter seat spacing was great for respecting noise and wasn't loud to me. The dishes definitely reflect the artsy theme and had nice presentations. Highlights were the carrot/red curry, zucchini/curry and sea bass/yuzu with bright colors, looked like a painting in the plate and they all were just explosions of flavor. The other dishes were solid but not too memorable. Texture contrast seemed a theme and I found them fun to eat. The wine pairing had diverse geographic offerings with some interesting pairings - my favorite was with the Guinea fowl getting poured chateau musar 2018 and 2003 vintages for direct comparison - fun! Dessert hazelnut/peach was delicious and I got the optional add on dessert - chocolate flower by LYSEE that was so decadent and beautifully made. The amount of food is decent- I'd say fairly filling for the meal value. Overall a very good meal and would definitely return!

If you like sour, go. If not, not dont go until theres a new menu Service, amazing, nothing id wanna nitpick. Same level if not better than other michelin starred places Ive been to 10/10 Atmosphere 10/10 Food level and presentation, technically very good, at level of all other Michelin starred restaurants or fine dining I've been to. Repetitive art gallery paint theme for the sauces though? Got little boring 9/10 Taste wise, disappointing, not for me. Too sour. Almost basically sour after sour dish. I did like the fish, wagyu, carrot, and compte cheese dish to some extent, but the recurring theme was still sour after sour dish. Whole time I wanted it to end. 1. Sweet nori- Very fresh, but acidity overpowered- SOUR 2. Butternut squash - filling overpowered the truffle on top, was like eating a filled donut- curried filling inside I think- NOT SOUR 3. Carrot- one of my favorites , pickled carrots though.... so yeah sour theme again. At least the icecream balanced it out more-I was starting to guess but not yet where the theme was going- SOUR 4. Focaccia, good. I think it was aged for a while. Preferred it without dipping into the burrata cheese surprisingly. Plain without dipping but something about the cheese was missing. -Bread slightly sour almost like light sourdough-SOUR 5. Bluefin tuna- very fresh, then masked by sourness again. Idk what is with the theme. Keep everything and remove whatever was making it acidic- SOUR 6. Sea bass- nicely cooked overall very soft. I tasted each part of the sauce first before eating everything as a whole. Again whats with the sour theme? This one had Squid ink, yuzu I think, some sort of berry sauce as well. -SOUR 7.Wagyu- really liked the crust, nothing standout by itself, I woulda sous vide it, who cares about traditional ways. What made it taste better was when the perilla leaf was added. Without the leaf, the sauce, cmon, the sour again. Like cmon leave the smokiness of that special crust.-SOUR 8. 36 month compte cheese- One of my favorites, cheese and honey is always a good combo. Forgot what the icecream was- not another sour dish so good-NOT SOUR 9. Citrus- you see where this fits in? Yet another sour dish. Citrus tart and I forgot the fruits name for the sorbet. The whipped cream definitely helped, glad it was included to tone down the acidity- SOUR 10. Ending little bites The pistachio and the ball with juice inside. Sorry dont mind the names Pistachio, good small bite. Ball with juice, was like chocolate i think on outside, inside sour juice yet again-SOUR Tastewise 6.5, maybe if Im nice a 7/10 Honestly I was bored by the time the tuna dish came around. All I could think of was, Is the theme "sour"? I get the menu changes, maybe I just chose to come during the wrong theme for me. Ive been to so many michelin starred places and only write if really impressed or not impressed. Maybe im jaded now. If nothing changes throughout, meal is boring Total after tax tip and a bottle of still water, around $350

My boyfriend had been to Frevo a few times before and really liked it, so we picked this restaurant for his birthday dinner. First off, the vibe was just PERFECTION. Loved the gallery/speakeasy-esque entrance, adoredddd the combination of dark wood + minimalistic interior design, and the very close open kitchen. Service was top-tier-- I've been to my fair share of fine dining/michelin star restaurants, and I have to say the service at Frevo was top notch. Note that if u bring ur own wine/sake, the cover charge is $100. Also note that sake did go well with our food choices, but we kind of wish they had another glass? The glass we got was not the best for our sake. Food was overall really good, but some things were better than others. For a brief review of the dishes we had: - Japanese mackerel: 10/10 (really good mackerel with crunchy seaweed wrapped around it! It was kind of salty and the next appetizer was a bit smoother/blander in taste, so I did kind of wish they changed the order to prevent the second appetizer from getting lost) - Artichoke: 10/10 (it was like a soft cheesy and truffley koroke!! Loved ittt but again the taste was a bit lost in my mouth because the previous appetizer was soo strong in taste) - Spanish carabinero: 7/10 (I paid an extra $42 per person for this but honestly... this was my least favorite dish that we had. The mayo sauce was a bit too heavy and I couldn't taste the freshness of the carabinero? Honestly I'd rather have it as just sashimi) - Pretzel: 8/10 (chewy pretzel in an interesting form) - Amberjack: 10/10 (presentation was beautifullllll! Flavors were on the delicate side but well balanced) - White asparagus: 100/10 (asparagus was cooked to perfection! This is what really sets apart fine dining plates from other places-- the texture of the veggies!!) - Sea bream: 8/10 (ok to be fair I really liked this dish, but my boyfriend has a very sensitive sense of smell and he said the fish smelled kind of acidic? Like it was not fresh. We eat sea bream pretty often in Korea and we do know that it's a hard fish to keep fresh/keep the smell contained, especially without using heavy spices to cover the smell) - Wagyu: 100/10 (perfectly cooked meat and amazing sauce) - Honey and cheese dessert: 8/10 (kinda reminded me of those cheese breads I'd eat in the Philippines... nostalgic but not really what I expected) - Strawberry dessert: 1000000000000/10 (omg this is the BEST dessert I've eaten this year!!!!!!! I got too excited I forgot to take a pic lol) Overall, still an amazing experience but def pricey!

Came here on our anniversary. One of the best meals of my life. Service was impeccable. Everything course was explained and all of our questions were answered with smiles. Talk about a trip to flavor town! Menu changes seasonally so we look forward to coming back again!

Easily my favorite restaurant and one of the best dining experiences Ive had in NYC. Everything about Frevo is spectacular - from the front gallery art curation, to the meticulous attention to detail in every dish - not to the mention the quality and flavor of each, to the attentive care of all staff, to the beautiful space, to all the unexpected and small surprises that will leave you ready to return tomorrow! I visited for my birthday and they could not have made it more special. I recommend sitting in the counter versus the table (although I believe there's only 1 or 2 in a corner so book in advance either way). It's a must visit and you will not be dissapointed!

I'm typically not the biggest fan of Michelin star restaurants, because I find the dishes to be overly complex, lukewarm, or not filling. However, this was not the case with Frevo - each dish here was executed with a lot of thoughtfulness and each one provided a very interesting experience. I left feeling satisfied and that I tried many new concepts. The allure of this restaurant is that it's hidden behind an art gallery. From the street looking in, you see a small room with art pieces on the wall. However, one of the pieces is actually a door that leads to the dining room of Frevo. Previously they had large paintings on the wall but they've replaced them with neon light art. I actually preferred the paintings because the neon light art made me feel like I was walking into an escape room (sorry not sorry) and it doesn't feel as special now. The dining room is set up omakase style, where you sit at a bar and are served each course in that way. I don't think I'm the biggest fan of this either, because the servers would awkwardly sneak up behind you and hover there and maneuver the plates from behind your shoulder in an attempt to serve your entire party at once (I mean, isn't the point of the bar?To serve it from behind the bar?) It's also not the best environment for larger parties because it doesn't create a space for conversation. I only saw one table in the corner that could seat a party of 4-5. So, Frevo is best reserved for a date night and not a group get together. I did like that the bar allowed the diners to view the preparation of the dishes. And that the chefs who prepared them had the opportunity to present some of the dishes themselves. I thought the charcoal grilled preparation of the Madai course was so intricate and interesting. All the dishes were very good. I particularly loved the Butternut squash (fried ball perfection), the milk bread (soft buttery heaven), and the chocolate with wasabi (an excellent rich ending to the meal). All the ingredients had a purpose and contributed to some unique aspect of the dish it was in. For instance, the truffle in the butternut squash really complimented the overall earthy flavors of the squash and the brown of the ball, rather than simply existing as truffle. The chocolate dessert was so rich that the wasabi was a necessity to cut through and balance the flavors. During the meal you have the option of choosing the zucchini dish or the langoustine. The langoustine is $65 extra and it is much better than the zucchini - I tried some of my friend's zucchini and I found it to be very underwhelming. But I wish that the $65 paid for the langoustine means that you get BOTH dishes instead of simply subbing the zucchini with the langoustine. Typically, I see paid options as EXTRAS on top of the meal instead of the diner having to make the choice to lose the experience of trying the dish it's substituting. The service I thought was good but not incredibly good (or at least not up to the level that the food is). We had an order mix up and the wine suggestions were just okay (I don't even know if the suggestions came from a sommelier). The servers were kind and professional but they didn't go out of their way to make the experience special, like at some other Michelin starred restaurants I've tried. Overall: 5 for food 3.5/5 for service 4.2/5 for ambiance

Took my mom here to celebrate my new job. This was a fantastic experience. The hidden restaurant was so cool it was intimate and unique. My favorite dishes were the milk bread, the madai and the kanpachi. The chefs were so knowledgeable and friendly. I'd definitely recommend upgrading every dish :) also desserts are fire

Now for the most important part: the food! The fish n' chips are deliciously superb. The cod tasted fresh. The batter was light, crispy, and spiced well. What was noteworthy was the tartar sauce. It has a unique tang to it that made the fish n' chips refreshing despite the fact that it's deep-fried. Maybe it was a usage of lime and celery? The chips were nice and crispy, but you could definitely taste the potato still. I ate the whole plate. A pleasant experience. I know where I'll go to get my fish n' chips next time I'm in Manhattan.

It's not fancy at all and it's a little pricey for it and fanciness but they do a hell of a moules and Frites ( mussels and french fries Belgian style loving the authentic Dijon mustard and the service, that is sincere.. I like sitting outside on Hudson Street watching the wheels go round. I can't give it 5 stars because it's kind of dumpy inside. The patient waiter made up for that, not everything is a value on the menu. Good luck figuring that out. Order mayo and diesel mustard for the frites. Give it four stars,it's funky, but it's cool.

This was my first time trying actual Romanian food, as most restaurants I have been are marketed as…read more"eastern European" with the cabbage rolls, pierogi, etc. Thus, it is hard to give an accurate star rating since I don't really have an adequate baseline of what Romanian food should be, but combining the food and the excellent service, this place deserves a 5 stars. We were a party of 7 and we walked in on a Sunday dinner, and there was no wait. There was a wedding nearby in the restaurant, so it was a bit loud, but it was a good vibe. We ordered a bunch of dishes, such as the Platou Taranesc, Salata Bouef, Pomana Porcului, Pastrama, Mititei, Sarmale, Papanasi, and Coltunasi Platou Taranesc - country plate, basically bread and cold cut, Romanian style. It was a good experience but something I would normally not go out of my way for, since I don't like cold cut. But it is worth trying since Romanian food has a lot of cured meats and such, so the variety here is apparent Salata Bouef - bouef salad. Not beef salad. It is like a potato salad with chicken and veggies. Fairly hearty despite looking like small portions Pomana Porcului - traditional style pork fried meat - does not look fried, but it is a bit cured. A bit tough, maybe that's how they prepare it, but nonetheless flavorful. Pastrama - lamb pastrami - also a bit tough but cured. I liked the flavors but definitely need to eat it like a fork and knife style, not one bite Mititei - Romanian skinless sausages - kind of like a kofta (ground beef) and I loved this meat dish the most Sarmale - stuffed cabbage roll - one of the best cabbage rolls I have tried. Manageable size for each roll, and the cabbage has just the right amount of softness and the filling is super flavorful. Would recommend this 100% Papanasi - Romanian donuts - they say 2 pieces but the pieces are huge and sweet and hearty. A great way to conclude the meal, and enough to feed 4+ people after a nice meal Coltunasi - dumplings - we got beef. These are good but did not stand out. A nice starter Service was amazing and deserving of the auto 20% gratuity. The only miss is the water refills are not as frequent but the server gave us some sides on the house and gave us amazing recommendations of what to try for food for the first time and brought out everything we needed to enjoy the meal.

Every bite was incredible, the prawn and peri peri chicken keep me up at night. Highly recommend, can't wait to come back.

So, I will start with my arrival- greeted by the hostess and she was lovely. I appreciate going to restaurants and being seated right away even if the full party is not there. So, they definitely get points for that. As for the food, the codfish fritters were good. But I will say it's more about potato croquette with a splash of cod fish. The flavor was good, but I do see why others may have negative views on them because they are seeking more of the codfish within. The fish was amazing. I would definitely order that again. The dessert was also very good.. I will say my only issue was the delay, getting our drinks which were non-alcoholic and our entrées. Our waitress felt disconnected when it came to staying on top of our orders. The question is would I go again?!?!? I will see, this is a black owned business so I definitely like to support black own restaurants.

The inside looks and feels like a tavern, and there was the typical no-nonsense staff you find in Central and Southern European restaurants. They have a very reasonably priced beer menu, especially on tap, and I got a BrouCzech Dark for $7 for half a liter, with a 1/3 liter option for $5, with the other tap options being the pilsners Czechvar and the more standard Urquel. They gave us some free bread to start, before our very heavy shared meal. The first thing to arrive was the Boiled Perogies, consisting of 12 pieces for $25, topped with bacon and sour cream. I usually slightly prefer the fried version, but these were very tasty. It wasn't super doughy compared to most spots, and it had a nice filling. As per usual, the dumplings, which were a bit rich, were balanced by the sour cream. In short, I preferred these over the boiled pierogi from Karczma, among other spots. While we were eating, another smaller plate arrived, the Broiled Klobasa for $13, served with horseradish sauce. I am very particular about sausage quality, as my old hometown has a butcher shop that makes 25/30 homemade products, including many sausages, and this was very tasty. The klobasa had a good smoky flavor and had a good snap. The horseradish, mustard, and pickles on the side helped with the richness. I would recommend this also. For most people, their favorite dish of the evening was the Halusky for $27, or potatoes spaetzle with sheep cheese, topped with bacon. As per the other dishes, the portion size was very generous. The spaetzle had a good texture, and the dish was quite rich, creamy, and salty from the cheese and bacon. This version was comparable, if not better than, the excellent versions at the various Eastern European spots in Manhattan, and I would recommend this as well. Our least favorite dish by a lot was the Pork Schnitzel for $28, made with a potato pancake batter and topped with cheese. This came with a salad and a side item of our choice. The salad was very plain but fresh, with some potatoes and pickled vegetables on the side. The schnitzel lacked a bit of flavor and salt compared to the other dishes. This was the only miss of the evening, but it was still decent as the chicken had a nice breading. Next time, I would probably try their Svíčková, or in other words, beef and cream sauce, to compare it to Spirit and other dishes, such as the roast duck, if it's hopefully available as one of the specials. This was an above-average spot serving a less common cuisine, and I would recommend it.

We made a reservation for 8p and arrived a couple of minutes early but the restaurant was relatively empty so it was quick to get a table. The eggplant and salad both came outburst and both were good in terms of size and flavor. The salad had a good dressing which complimented it and did not overpower it. The eggplant was really good but would've been better with bread, so we requested bread and it was an additional charge and some pieces were very chewy and a bit hard to chew. The baked good came out afterwards and it was a combo between a pizza and phyllo dough. The portion size was really good and the flavor was decent albeit a bit bland. The mushroom dumplings were also good size and came with 4 pieces with sour cream on the side.
