Often passing Oscar's and seldom have the chance to either snag a seat/table -- so on a gorgeous afternoon at 3:30 when the place is empty from brunch, I came for a late lunch. Having read previous reviews of their amazing fish and chips, I had to try it out. There was outdoor seating but with intermittent showers and the wind I went inside. Though it was small and a bit hot it's still cozy. I ordered a Leffe and my meal and the host asked if I wanted bread (of course I did). The beer came nicely chilled. The fish and chips came later perfectly deep fried in a lite batter. There was one long and one shorter fillet (probably haddock) with lots of fries. For $25 in the west village with a cold beer, what more can one ask for. This will be my go to spot for no frills good food. Beer is lost is expansive and the real problem is getting a seat when it's during the rush. What a terrific find in a sea of expensive and upscale eating. And service was terrific as well! read more

This place felt like a no-frills fish n' chip shop that one could come across in London (or somewhere in Belgium for that matter!). It's a very small, but cozy restaurant, and one could tell that those that own it care about the space and how well organized, clean, and put together it is. The sense of minimalism and European food brands (ex. malt vinegars) add charm to the simple setting giving off a non-pretentious, relaxed, ambience. The waiter was friendly and efficient. Now for the most important part: the food! The fish n' chips are deliciously superb. The cod tasted fresh. The batter was light, crispy, and spiced well. What was noteworthy was the tartar sauce. It has a unique tang to it that made the fish n' chips refreshing despite the fact that it's deep-fried. Maybe it was a usage of lime and celery? The chips were nice and crispy, but you could definitely taste the potato still. I ate the whole plate. A pleasant experience. Appearances can be deceptive. This tiny (16 seats) place isn't real pretty, but boy can they cook! The friendly staff bring masterful fish & chips - a full beautiful fillet with paper thin coating, perfectly cooked. Fries that were cut onsite, not from a bag. Butternut squash soup generously served and scrumptious. Surprising menu options from their English/Belgian background, like a steak and kidney dish, bangers and mash, and tarte tatin (simple but exacting as to technique). My friend's halibut was perfect, the lovely sauce kissed with garlic. My only wish (aside from them moving next door to me) is brighter lighting which this lovely food deserves. Met a friend in the neighborhood for brunch. We had made reservations online but if you go early enough, or maybe get lucky, you won't need them. During the summer they had outdoor seating. The dining area is tight, with only a few tables inside and essentially in the kitchen. The server was helpful, gave recommendations for different options and kept checking in on us. Opted for the eggs cocotte for something lighter and the mash of the day, which I believe had roasted leeks. Eggs were cooked well, salad was a nice contrast, and rich mash. With a day filled with activities ahead of me, it took every bit of will power to not order a full english. But next time, I absolutely will. read more

I had a delivery order of fish and chips, as well as, mussels. The fish was a tasty large piece of beer-battered cod with tarter sauce on the side. The chips or french fries came with a small container of malt vinegar. Of course delivery fish and chips is rarely ever crispy after a half hour or so of steaming in the container during transport. That is to be expected and this was no different. Nonetheless, this was a nice and fresh piece of fish and decent fries. The highlight of the meal was a 1 pound order of steamed mussels in a white wine, garlic sauce. This was exceptional and as good as if eaten in the restaurant...very sweet and fresh. Packing was well done and delivery time was fairly quick. I would recommend this restaurant especially the mussels. read more

I and my bf passed this spot on a whim. It looked really interesting + had one of his favorite beers (old speckled hen), so we came back around to try it out. It's a cute little English-centric restaurant with about 5-6 tables, with one person up front to seat and one person in the back whipping up the food. He got the speckled hen and I got a Pinot Grigio. We shared the bangers and mash and the salad which were pretty tasty. Cozy, down-to-Earth spot for a classic British breakfast/brunch (although the staff are definitely not British). The place is like a small, somewhat poorly-lit deli, but the brunch food is pretty good. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, which was very classic spread of eggs benedict, mashed potatoes, and a garden salad. The poached eggs were cooked well and the hollandaise sauce was nice and creamy and gave the English muffin a nice flavor. There could've been some more smoked salmon on there though. The mashed potatoes were mashed with with onions inside which made it extra tasty. The garden salad tasted fresh but had a bit too much dressing, which made it a bit sour at times. $20.50 was a fair price for this plate considering the portion size. The staff were average friendliness and the service speed was pretty quick. There are only a couple tables inside but there are several available outside too. The main thing they need to work on is the environment, as it is not very aesthetic. The kitchen/behind-the-counter area takes up basically half of the main indoor seating area and it was looking a bit disorganized and not particularly appealing. There are also packages of unsold drinks just stacked up by the walls. But I suppose to some, these give the place a sort of local, hole-in-the-wall kind of feel, but I can also see how others can find it a bit unattractive. Overall, I have not seen too many classic British brunch spots around, so if that's what you're looking for, then Oscar's Place is probably a very good option. With a bit of remodeling/redesigning, I can definitely see some greater potential for this restaurant, but it's already decent as is. read more

I loved this little eatery. It's divey and tiny with such a fun vibe. The food was great and the service so prompt and friendly. I imagine they can't help but be prompt as it's four steps from the service counter to your table! Maybe even less! We arrived just a bit before noon on a Sunday and there was one table available. I believe the max number of diners that could pack in here would be about 24 people. The dining area is maybe 150 or so square feet. There's going to be a bit of elbow rubbing but it's all jolly good. I thought I would hear a British accent or two from staff, but none that day. Though everyone was so cheery, and they are well trained/experienced in moving effortlessly through the narrow spaces to serve the guests, as well as to assist guests in stashing their bags/coats and guiding people in and out the entry door. There's a single restroom and yeah, it's pretty small. But clean and functional. We wanted a good solid brunch and the "Full English" sounded great to me. Turned out to be even better than it sounded. Hot, fresh, varied, and delicious. A beautiful plate. I've heard that the Brits love their beans for breakfast and in keeping with the English way, put some on a piece of the accompanying warm toasty bread. Yum! Over easy eggs were perfect. My husband had the smoked salmon benedict and loved that too. The accompanying 'mash' was pretty interesting, I think it was a mashup of potato and turnip with some greens. Very special. He also commented that the tomato was absolutely delicious and this from someone who really does not like tomatoes! I was puzzled to see only salt shakers on the tables, no pepper - then the waiter came around and offered fresh ground pepper - so classy. Yelp check-in gets you a free tea or coffee and as of this writing, Oscar's is taking part in the Yelp cashback program. So you have even more reasons to give this place a try. They actually will take a reservation for a group of four or more. Otherwise, walk in and hope for the best. I imagine in bad weather or heavy coat weather it will be difficult if you have to wait for a table because there's not a lot of space to do so inside. Happily Spring is in the air so get yourself to Oscar's Place soon. I hope to return! read more

JUST FOUND MY NEW GO TO FISH AND CHIPS SPOT. I was really craving fish and chips but wanted a proper British restaurant, the reviews here looked good so decided to check it out. They offer outdoor seating and indoor seating. The outdoor seating is heated. The food here was AMAZING. It was way beyond my expectations and it's one of the best meals I've had in a while. Fish and chips: the fish was a whole fish filet, it was cooked to PERFECTION. So crispy and the fish was super fresh, very flaky. I was so content with the fish. The fries made this meal even better. The fries were thick cut fries, there was a huge serving of fries and they were the most ideal width. I love thick cut fries so this dish really hit home for me. Chicken stew: The chicken stew tasted like a very fancy shepherd's pie. There was a bunch of chicken in there. The sauce was SO FLAVORFUL. I took a first bite and was instantly amazed. The puff pastry that this dish came with was so fun to crack and so flaky, like a fancy croissant in texture. Also amazing. For dessert, we got a bread pudding. It was so nicely warmed and contrasted nicely with the ice cream on top. The chocolate coating on the outside just added to how decadent this dessert was. So great. 10/10 on this meal. I was so happy after this meal and I will DEFINITELY be back to check out more of the restaurant! read more

A west village treasure, our party of 3 stopped in for brunch on a recent Sunday. We were seated after a short 5 min wait and the proprietor bringing out another table to join the recently vacated 2 top whilst adjusting the umbrella for us all to be pleasantly shaded. He was wonderful. The menu has something for everyone and the food came out fresh and all together. Their hollandaise is lighter and more flavorful than I usually find on an eggs benny. We all cleaned our plates and then split the purist waffle for dessert - I'm not usually a waffle girl, but the tiny pockets of fluff inside the crisp exterior of theirs was supremely enjoyable.
