We live in Freeport and this is our place for some standard American fair. Unfortunately, with both the food and the service, it is hit or miss. I have had eggs benedict, breakfast platters, and a haddock sandwich. The breakfast foods have been cold or undercooked, they have also been totally fine. The haddock sandwich was good. The french fries are also good. I really think it depends upon the day and who is working. If you are in the Freeport area, this place may give you some good food or it may not. So far, the fried food has been fairly reliable. My advice, stick with that. read more

Located right next to the Best Western Freeport Inn, this is the perfect place to have breakfast when staying at the hotel. When we came to eat there the place was packed, and I guess it was not only with hotel guests. The breakfast selection is huge and the breakfast sandwich I had was delicious, but my personal highlight was the freshly baked cinnamon roll that I had afterwards which was HUGE. I had already asked for a box to take some of it with me to eat at a later point but it was so good I ate it all at once J Our waitress was super nice so I can only recommend the Freeport Café. read more

I haven't been to Freeport Cafe in years. Glad to make it back, this time for dinner (they're usually mobbed on weekends for breakfast). Basic diner/cafe food specializing in fried seafood. Went with the seafood platter, which was hearty and not too greasy. Their seafood chowder was very good. They bake their own pies and blueberry was one of the choices, so I had to have a slice, heated, with vanilla ice cream. Yum! Yum! Digest version: friendly and pleasant service, inferior cooking. No substitutions allowed- so if your needs or likes are non-standard you'll pay more. Ordered the Favorite breakfast with homemade hash (extra crispy) and eggs over medium. The hash was completely soft, with an interesting if overdone nutmeg flavor- and too salty to eat. Eggs came out VERY easy, yolk and whites running all over the plate. Our server had the eggs redone (just right the second time) and comped the hash. Potatoes were also quite salty, and coated with some pinkish flavoring I wasn't crazy about. My husband's bacon was a bit limp, and the toast was storebought. I've been driving by the Freeport Cafe for over 23 years and I have always thought it was for the motel guests only! Well I was very wrong and I guess it's a real favorite because even during these times, there was never not a line! My boyfriend's family has been coming here for years and they all raved about the eggs benedict. We had a short wait for a table for 6. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient. When she came over we all already knew what we wanted so we asked for waters, a couple coffees and 6 eggs bennies. They came out very quickly and everything was soooo good. Expertly toasted and buttered English muffins, perfectly poached eggs and the most lucious hollandaise sauce I've ever had! It was accompanied by a mountain of crispy yet soft home fries. The portion was a "wow I definitely shouldn't eat all this but I absolutely will because it's that good" size. They are currently only serving breakfast but I have a feeling I'll be back for soon for more eggs benny and hopefully someday I can try some of their lunch items! read more

This place is now Freeport/Maine does comfort food, with a side of community. I've been coming here to eat most of my life, and I still come almost every time I come back home, including my latest visit this past weekend. The menu consists of classics done well, and at a very reasonable price. It's great being able to get their yummy breakfast food all day--especially the toasted biscuit! I'm also a longtime fan of their wicked thick and creamy (and rich) clam chowder. The friendly staff are always coming by to see what you need, refill your coffee, and crack a joke with you. It's so relaxed and comfortable and unassuming and unpretentious, just like Maine. And while plenty of people "from away" come here, it's got a strong local crowd all year too. My boyfriend and I had a terrible dining experience, I had terrible service that the server never came over and there was only one other table in the whole place. Worst off was the food! Would have gotten better food and bang for my buck at mc donalds! I got the chicken Caesar wrap and there was nothing in it, it was flat tasted nothing Caesar at all and when i complained that I got more in a dollar snack wrap at McDonald's she brought it back just wrapped it again and put a pick in it thinking it would look fixed but nothing was added or fixed! $8 for that no thank you ever! Stopped by one night ordered the special Caesar salad with fried haddock. Delicious fish, huge portion. Fried clams were also quite good. About a week later stopped in and without the haddock salad special on the board, we both ordered the haddock DINNER. What came out was a haddock sandwich with a single piece of haddock on a bun. When we asked the waitress she said, "oh the dinner is served as a sandwich." If it's a sandwich, it should say sandwich on the menu, right? Freeport Cafe really deserves 5 stars but I'm taking one away because I do consider the 2nd best breakfast cafe in Maine. The 1st being Stones. However Freeport Cafe is consistently open where as Stones can be iffy on the hours. The other negative for Freeport is the patio, it's just not comfy out there. They serve food all day and if you happen to be staying at the Best Western (I think you get a discount) and it's right next door to the hotel checkin building. Parking is ample. Service is good. They make a lot of their own breads, muffins, biscuits every day. The Blueberry muffins are very good but get them grilled. Delicious. I've had the Eggs Benedict which is always great. All the eggs are great. This is the kinda place where a simple plate of eggs, toast and meat (and a grilled blueberry muffin) can be one of the best meals of your entire trip. This is a casual little cafe outside of the bustle of downtown Freeport. The bakery products are fresh and delicious. The menu is not extensive, but the offerings are good New England comfort food and are well prepared and presented. There is something for everyone including kids. read more

We visited Freeport Cafe based on the recommendation of a local. She was right on the money. Great breakfast food. Our waitress, Sam, was efficient and pleasant and kept our coffee cusps filled with a smile. They serve good, basic breakfast fare all day long. I have driven by this place for years, meaning to stop in 'sometime.' Well, 'sometime" was this morning. I ordered the "Freeport Favorite" breakfast - scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a biscuit. I ate six hours ago and I am still completely full! Everything was cooked perfectly, quickly and it was served very hot despite the fact that the restaurant was completely packed. I paid maybe a dollar more than I paid for breakfast at McDonald's last week, could not believe the incredible value of such a delicious meal! This will be a regular stop going forward. read more

Went for lunch. There were two signs "Please be seated" and "please wait to be seated". The couple in front of me seated themselves but I stood there for a while waiting to see if someone would seat me. After a while of waiting to be seated with no one stopping to say that a host would be with me, I asked the woman working at the counter if it was seat yourself. The woman was extremely rude, to the point where I (9 months pregnant) decided the food just wasn't worth it with such rude staff. Customer service training would serve this staff well. read more

If you want a hearty breakfast that is well made and tasty then this is a great choice. We had 6 members of our party and there were enough choices to satisfy everyone. We had a variety of eggs, pancakes, French toast, muffins, corned beef hash, breakfast meats and really good fresh coffee! Service was attentive and they were friendly and quick to get whatever you needed. Coffee cups were refilled and water glasses topped off. To me that is important. We showed up on a Sunday morning with 8 people in our group including two small children and two teenagers. I was sure there would be no way that they could accommodate us. Staying at the Freeport Inn next door we came here on our last day for breakfast. The seating is a bit cramped, but we managed. The eggs benedict is the star here, but nothing else really compares. My kids pancakes were bland and tough, my wife's oatmeal was like wallpaper paste. The service was prompt but impersonal, and the purported "muffin man" didn't deliver on the Lemon Raspberry, it wasn't a stand out. Mediocre offerings. Good in a pinch. read more

So I saw some reviews for service issues and I think they are definitely short staffed. We patiently waited to be seated even with empty tables around.
