Grilled Ham & Brie on Sourdough
Adrienne R.

I used to come to Clayton's often when I lived in Maine. They have a great sandwich selection and several salads made to order and premade salads as well - like broccoli salad, street corn, etc. Today I came with 2 friends. We ordered at the counter and sat outside to eat. Inside felt warmer than we were comfortable with and it was GORGEOUS out. They have lots of picnic tables outside and several have umbrellas. The woman taking our order put it in all together so our food would come out at the same time and then she was kind enough to split the order so we could each pay our own - without us asking her to - she offered! One person had the Roma and liked it. One had the Falafel Wrap and said it was great and I had the Ham and Brie. The sandwich said it was on 'grilled' sourdough, but it was on toasted sourdough. Now look, I get that to most people there is not a difference, but to me - grilled is made on a flattop with some sort of fat to create the golden brown, buttery goodness expected with a grilled cheese. Toasted is bread that has been crisped via heat source and its dry. No fat is needed to achieve the crispness of the bread. But this bread looked like it had been made crisp by being on a grill/grill pan, something of the like. I digress. The sandwich was good. The ham was high quality and sliced thicker than a standard deli slice. The Brie cheese was melted and was a delicious. The honey mustard was strong and I should have asked it to be on the side. I would probably try something else next time. Clayton's is a Yarmouth staple and I highly recommend it if you haven't been. We didn't get dessert, but now that we have left - I wish I had. I love their cookies!!

Half a Turkey BLT

I am torn on this review. Clayton's has great sandwiches and the butternut squash soup is Amazing! Great coffee and desserts. There is indoor seating and outdoor tables with chairs and picnic tables. This place was always busy but now they get totally slammed at lunch. This is a very popular place for young, old, working and retired. I suspect online ordering is now a very big part of their business so stopping in for lunch and ordering in-person leads to a very long wait, even at 11:30am. They have lots of staff working which is really good to see. I am happy they seem to be doing well. So for me the food is very good but the wait time is too much for a sandwich. Probably good for people who like to order ahead.

Ok, I made it. I'm a seasoned regular :) Love love LOVE this place. Very affordable, various breakfast and lunch options, options to dine in or take to go. I love their egg and cheese breakfast wrap, I add Tabasco, onions, and peppers and substitute cheddar cheese. Lunch tends to be either their special chicken salad sandwich or Turkey BLT with mozzarella, but I'm trying to force myself to try other things. It's just so hard to deviate when you have your favorites! Speaking of favorite...honey cinnamon latte...I'm obsessed. This has been a 2-3 times/week type place for me as of recent, and their stock is only rising! Oh, and don't even get me started on their amazing dessert selection...must see.

Clayton's has always been a staple for me. Such a nice place to go. Bakery and cafe. They have made to order drinks, bakery items, soups, and sandwiches. The service is quick and friendly. You can give them your name and/or number and you'll be called out and texted when your order is ready. I got the turkey sandwich and a caramel latte. The prices are great and affordable. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating (weather permitting). The inside is cozy and filled with sellable artwork from local artists. This is a welcoming place. Right near NYA so lots of students can walk in and grab breakfast or lunch. I have always had a great experience here and definitely recommend it!

This was our morning stop for a coffee/chai and breakfast sandwiches. It was surprisingly busy for an early morning Tuesday but the place is much larger than you'd expect. Especially with all the available seating including all of it outdoors. They had multiple registrars open so minimal wait for ordering. Drinks came out quickly and both seasonal drinks we got were fantastic. They had around 5 or 6 fall drink specials and every one of them sounded very good. The food took quite awhile longer and both our sandwiches were more burnt and charred than I would have expected. The lemon mayo you can get on them was the highlight for sure, do not skip out on it! My wife got her sandwich on English muffin and I got mine on their sourdough. Overall a decent cafe spot for drinks and food but I'd return to some other spots before this one.

Size of the Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich

I use to go here all the time when I worked next door. I haven't got a chance to come in since the new ownership a year ago and decided to try it out today. Unfortunately, something got lost in translation. There have been a few updates made to the store. Including the seating. There is now a lot more seating outside. Which is nice, as they were quite busy. I ordered a cup of clam/haddock chowder and a curry chicken salad sandwich. Total was $20. Which is pretty much the same as it was before. They mentioned it would be about 20 minutes, but it was about 10. Quick service a plus. When I got home with my food I finally got to check it out. The sandwich (Curry Chicken Salad) is REALLY small. (Photo included). It was smaller than my hand. For $12, that's really crazy. I'd rather have paid more to get an actual sandwich than get "shrinkflation". The sandwich was also okay, but was pretty bland. Barely any curry flavor, at all. Now the chowder. I LOVED there soups. Always so fresh and so good. This was not that. It clearly spoiled at some point. The chowder itself was split, and it smelled and tasted sour. Working for restaurants all my life, I can quickly tell when a soup has spoiled. It was really bad. I loved this location a lot. It was a go to for me. Unfortunately, with the new ownership must have come some big changes in how they make their food; as it's very small portions, bland, and in some cases, spoiled. I loved recommending this location to tourist that come to my work, but I won't be able to do that anymore after this experience.

Impressive cocktail menu, and notably one of the better non-alcoholic mocktail programs I've seen in the entire Greater Portland area. The crab dip was as every bit of sensational as I expected. Bread is always a good choice, but honestly, there's not enough for the dish. I think they could do something special with Ritz Crackers here to complement. We ordered the daily special, a beef brisket with celery root/potato mash and brisket filled ravioli with a truffle cream sauce. The ravioli was the winner here for me - I would bottle up that truffle cream sauce and sell it. I love that they kept a good portion of the original framework of the building - it adds to the romantic touch to the rustic interior. Open concept kitchen at the platform made it fun to peep into every once in awhile during dinner. Great for date night and special occasions.

Let's start with the cocktails, because they truly deserve top billing. I always order the seasonal espresso martini, and somehow it just keeps getting better. This time it was tiramisu-inspired, and it was unreal. Rich, balanced, not overly sweet, and actually tasted like the dessert without feeling heavy. Whoever is behind that bar knows exactly what they're doing. The fish and chips? You cannot go wrong. Perfectly crisp batter, flaky fish, and fries that hold their own. It's one of those dishes you order once and then find yourself thinking about days later. That said, everything we've tried over multiple visits has been consistently excellent. It's the kind of menu where you feel safe branching out because you know it's going to deliver. The space itself adds to the whole experience. The architecture is beautiful, with warm wood tones and big windows that bring in natural light and make the river views part of the meal. Our servers have consistently been knowledgeable, present, and genuinely welcoming without hovering. It makes the whole night feel easy.

Turns out, this place is way better than I expected. I had it in my head that it was some kind of tourist trap because of the location, but nope. It actually gives off super local vibes, and the food was REALLY good. I think this might be in my top three for best food-to-price ratio in the greater Portland area (does Freeport even count as that?). My "dish" was $11.99 and came with two eggs, two sausage links, two hash browns, and a homemade biscuit. The only thing I didn't get two of was the biscuit, but it was huge, so I was actually relieved about that. I left stuffed. More importantly, everything was really yummy! The hash browns were crispy but not greasy, the eggs were cooked perfectly sunny-side up, and that homemade biscuit... I could've taken another one to-go. Make sure you ask for it grilled; you'll thank me later. My husband got the biscuits and gravy and his food was just as good. Also, they have dozens of mimosa flavors. I had the pineapple mimosa and it was phenomenal. Service was great, too. Our server was friendly and super attentive. Kinda like your grandmother's basement after a flood from 15 years ago that no one probably cleaned up. Yeah you know the smell. The short ribs were gorgeous, the reduction was perfect and the wild mushroom au gratin was heavenly. NY strip was perfectly tender, seasoned well and cooked to perfection. It took a few minutes to be seated, since no one was manning the reception station. Apparently that's waitstaff's job - when they're not doing 100 other things. This is an oversight on the restaurant's part and something I pointed out to the manager. Once we were seated though, our experience blossomed into something really wonderful. Neither my mother nor I ordered appetizers.... Since we figured that lunch would be enough (it was). They don't serve bread or crackers or anything as a gratuity - which is probably a cost-saving as well as time-saving measure. It also forces you into buying one of their "small plates" (appetizers), which looked wonderful but were also quite pricey. We also didn't order alcohol- which probably saved us between $30 and $50, since their cocktails were $15 and upwards. Same is true with their wines. Appealing but pricey. I ordered the beef short rib entree ($38) (see attached photo) with a small Caesar salad and their wild mushroom ragout. The beef was some of the best I've ever had. It was fork-tender, juicy, and flavorful in ways that are hard to describe. As for the wild mushroom ragout.... It was cheesy and delicious, but lacked any visible mushroom. I told our waitress so and I hope she passed it on to the chef. My mother ordered their Grilled salmon, served on a bed of cranberry quinoa and topped with an avocado sauce that was amazing (see photo). ($41). The food was so good that there was no hope of taking any home. We wiped out everything! (See photo) We hard coffee with our meal and with taxes and tip, the bill came to $118. Well worth it for such a fabulous meal. We'll go back, but with my father and eldest daughter in tow next time!!

When we offhandedly remarked how parched we were, our server hooked us up with BIG water glasses - and really, it's the little things like that that set a place apart. The drinks were good! I got a mocktail that tasted like a jazzed up Shirley Temple. Appreciate that they have mocktails for, as of writing this, under $10. For me, however, the food was a let down. While there's plenty of gluten-free options, the vegan options are almost non-existent. It seems like it's $20 for a plate of cold vegetables, $20 for a plate of grilled vegetables, or $20 for a pizza with red sauce and more grilled vegetables. The pizzas themselves are kind of small, I think. It says 12", but when ours arrived... it looked like the same size that I might slide out of a frozen pizza from the store. If you've got no dietary restrictions, you'll probably feel differently than me, but I wouldn't come here to eat. Actually, my recommendation is this: come an hour before they open, park your car, and go wander their genuinely lovely trail system. It's mostly flat (there are some rooty areas), and there's SO. MUCH. COOL. ART. to look at. At least one piece will make you smile and become something you talk about later... when you're sitting at the restaurant outside (the Adirondack chairs overlooking the woods is very Maine) enjoying a cocktail.
