So - I have been popping into this place once or twice a year for at least 7+ years now. It's one of those places I wish I lived closer to - but am also glad that I do not!! I'm sure if they were on my daily travels - I would go way too often. This is a sweet little bakery located on Route 1. Recently, it changed hands I believe and they updated both the interior and exterior to a more modern look. I was very concerned that with this update, the menu too would change. I am happy to report that it has not!! They have a wide selection of sweets - from cookies to bars to cupcakes to croissants. I have tried many things over the years, but there is one item in particular that I come back for time and again. The coconut filled cupcake!! It's just perfection - a very forward coconut flavor with a very generous amount of frosting topped with shredded coconut. I make a trek here every year around my birthday because this is the cake that I want to celebrate with! I always find the service kind, welcoming and helpful. I will start off that i am always hesitant to write bad reviews on yelp because i wouldn't want my review to negatively impact a business (especially for the local mom and pop). Growing up, my (immigrant) parents supported me through college by working at a local small restaurant (my dad was a busboy and my mom was a food runner) so i know that businesses don't always have it easy. Anyway, here it goes...... Over the weekend, i (excitedly) picked up a 6 inch apricot/honey buttercream birthday cake here, but things soon went south after the birthday girl cake cut into the cake..... Specifically, -The buttercream frosting was dry, hard, and crumbly (i love buttercream but this was one of the worst ones i've ever had) -The vanilla angel cake was dry, dense, and not moist at all - Cake layers were VERY uneven and cut in varying different sizes (the most uneven layers that i've ever seen) -The ratio of frosting to cake was really off and there was way too much frosting (most likely due to the bakery trying to correct the heavily uneven cake layers). - The decoration of the cake (although still pretty) was quite different from the one presented on the bakery's website Some real life comments that were received from friends and family: "Omg that's crazy. The bottom layer is sooo much larger??" "YO what the *beep* is that???" "AHAHAHAHAHA" "That's not the sort of cake you give to a friend!" =D "You should ask for a refund" "The frosting is so crumbly" "Dang that's a lot of frosting" "The cake is very dense" "What's the name of the place? I don't know how I've lived in the Greater Portland area for so long without coming to the European Bakery. It's exactly like the bakeries I grew up going to: cases upon cases of pastries and baked goods... and, really, the only thing they're missing is a regular Saturday bean supper special! I feel like it's going to take me many, many visits to figure out everything I love and recommend. For now, I'd say: YAY: The Tiramisu Whoopie Pie really surprised me (it's got a softer texture, but the flavors are all #chefskiss), and the Raspberry Puff Pastries taste exactly like my childhood (they've got the ideal ratio of jam to cream). MEH: The danishes are just okay; the fillings all seem like they might come from a can (I'm sorry if they don't, European Bakery!). NAY: Skip the Peanut Butter Tarts (ours fell apart with one bite; the flavor was underwhelming) and the Eclairs (which often seem deflated). ON MY TO TRY LIST: - Italian lemon cookies - Feta and spinach lunch croissants - Cinnamon buns - Raspberry mocha cakes - Coconut filled cupcakes I'd love to see more vegan or gluten-free options - times are changing, after all - but I understand and appreciate that they're a very traditional bakery! read more

I never write reviews for anything. Giving 3 stars for friendly people and a relatively ​big selection of so-so baked good options. Sorry to dissapoint with this review, but feeling compelled to write this because I am just disappointed having gone out of my way with my 82 yr old mother for coffee and pastries. The name is very misleading. It is not a European bakery​ and it is not a tea room​. There is no cappuccino or espresso. There is 1 decanter of pump coffee. There are 3​, 2 seater tables by a window​. There are no pastries, they are baked goods and they are underwhelming and overloaded with sugar-- maybe a step up from supermarket fresh, but nothing about the European Bakery and Tea Room is European. I just don't understand how to legitimize the concept behind the name​ for this place. Something like Falmouth ​Bakery and ​Cake ​Shop would be more appropriate. read more

First time visit, we bought the coconut cupcakes. The icing was sickly sweet. So much so it made me queasy. Aside from them being really heavy. That should have tipped me off. What a gut bomb. Dry cake with gelatin like filling. Probably old coconut custard. I can only surmise with all the rave reviews. That employees wrote them or those that did really don't know what good pastry is supposed to taste like. My wife had a ham and cheese croissant. Guess what, 2 bites later she threw it away. She said it tasted old and rubbery, and it reminded her of when she was a kid on a cross country bus trip. When she was stopped in the middle of nowhere. She got a sandwich out of a beat up old vending machine. Like something out of an old movie. Dust covered, dented with cardboard boxes stacked around it. Flickering light inside. A crumpled foil container with wilted lettuce sticking out. She was starving so she pulled it out and took one bite. Gagging she spat it out and threw the disgusting mess away. The European Bakery was once magical which made my last visit even more disappointing. We arrived just before 2:30 on Saturday; they close at 3. My friend asked for a cup of coffee and was told no, but she could have a decaf. She ordered a mint cupcake and the decaf. I ordered a coconut cupcake and got a water out of the cooler because I didn't want a decaf. We were then told we couldn't sit down in the Tea Room because it was "closed"--they needed to sweep. I asked what time it was and what time they closed--2:30/3:00 confirmed. We were feeling very unwelcome so we went out to the parking lot and ate our cupcakes in the car. Mine was dry and disappointing, just like everything about this trip to the European Bakery. I commented that the coconut cupcakes at El Rayo were fresher. My friend commented that we should have gone to the bakery at Pineland Farms. Once upon a time I stopped to buy boxes of bakery for colleagues and friends, cakes for special occasions, or just to enjoy a cup of coffee and a ricotta cookie or cupcake in the Tea Room. We were all super excited about this cake, because the cake from this bakery is Devine but the layering of frosting was thicker than the layering of cake.. The frosting was not fluffy and was butter consistency, buttercream shouldn't feel like actual butter. European Bakery is a really cool hole in the wall spot in Falmouth. Getting a birthday cake? Come here. Getting a cannoli snack? Come here! They have a lot of options - call ahead for any special orders but if you're in a time crunch they have BEAUTIFUL cakes ready to go and can do writing on the cake within 5 - 10 min and get you on your way. For me, I feel this fits the Yelp category of "woohoo! As good as it gets" After 3 years, of knowing this place existed, I finally stopped here and haven't regretted it. Now, I have been visiting here at least 1 a month when I feel like treating us to a sweet treat. There is always something that is right for the cravings for me and my husband. There are sweet and savory options. We always opt for the sweet, but at some point, I am sure, we will try the savory. It's just a matter of time. LOL Our favorite go-to items. The fruit "claims" they look like pie crust stuffed and folded in half FILLED with fruit filling. Our favorite is blueberry. Apple is fine too if you like apple. The macarons, yes, one "o' not to be confused with macaroons. Not the same at all. I have tried all of the flavors, there's really no other way to go - it's easier and tastier to just try them all. You and your family won't be disappointed. I love all of the flavors, I am sorry to say, I can't just pick one that is my favorite. Depends on my mood I guess. The cookies...all of the cookies, they are delicious. I love shortbread. The bread pudding! It's simple and perfect, they way you would expect it to be and want it to be. I prefer to heat mine up a little when I am home and serve with ice cream. But no shame - it's also great to eat on the run in the to-go container. The lemon raspberry cake with butter cream frosting! Wow, it tastes bright like springtime. Be sure to follow their advice, let it set to come to room temperature prior to eating it. You won't regret it. The flavors come alive and the butter cream frosting gets creamier! The carrot cake cupcake!!!! The exclamation points speak for how I feel about this treat. The staff/family/owners, they are all so nice and accommodating. They are all business too, which I love. As busy as it can get, I have never had to stand in line for long. If you don't see something you want, ask, they might have it or be willing to make it. Yes, that's "wow" customer service. I wanted to love this bakery, but just didn't have the best experience. Because of covid we tried to look online for what they'd be offering so we didn't have to spend too much time inside deciding on pastries. Turns out everything they listed online is either seasonal or out of stock so that was very disappointing. The flavors of the pastries we did get were underwhelming, very reminiscent of a grocery store bakery...not so much a spot to make a special stop at. For also being known as a 'tea house' they only had generic bagged tea and not even a wide selection of those. I'm hoping this was just an off day because a lot of reviews seem to really love this place, but I've found better spots for sweets nearby and will probably be frequenting those in the future. read more

When I first left European Bakery with my items boxed and yet to try, I am embarrassed to admit I had already planned on giving a very average score. I couldn't imagine the food could be that good when the building itself, both outside and in, is so drab and so outdated, seemingly without much thought, I couldn't believe that they'd care enough about the food to make it good. The items themselves often reminded me of countless other bakeries is been in that seemed stuck in the 1990's with the same recipes they'd been using for decades. Which isn't bad, but it's not remarkable either (usually). However EB absolutely proved me wrong and is worth all of five stars. The selection is a little limited as it rarely changes and you aren't going to super creative or unique items here like you might at some other bakeries in the Portland area but everything is SO. DAMN. AMAZING. The buttercream is fantastic. They make this raspberry and whipped cream pastry that is to die for. I even had a spinach and cheese danish that was the best I've ever had. They clearly are devoting their time and energy into making everything the best it can be and I respect that wholeheartedly. read more

This bakery holds a special place in my heart. The warm family friendly environment and lovely family that runs it never fails to give you a memorable experience. The sweetest girl in the world, I believe a daughter of the owner, Nikki I think her name was, was so friendly and helpful in picking out the perfect pastry for my elderly mothers birthday. Most of the pastry selections are very good. We only stop as a special treat because pricing is rather expensive. Traveling down Route US 1 in Falmouth Maine, my girlfriend Dana and I spotted the European Bakery and Tea Room. We were visiting a friend in Portland for lunch and promised to bring dessert. We stopped in and were delighted by what we found -- jam filled cookies, assorted pastries, baklava, vanilla and raspberry cream puffs and apple strudel are among the many delicacies available at the bakery. After deciding on the strudel and cream puffs we were on our way. Our desserts were a "hit" at the luncheon. Simply DELICIOUS! Our friend was delighted and we were too. Of, note the bakery was clean and bright adhering to the new standards of service under COVID. The staff at the bakery provided courteous, prompt, and helpful service. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Adam and the rest of the crew here at European Bakery. We wanted something a little different for our wedding, I was on the hunt for a Russian Napoleon Cake (Google it, you won't be disappointed!) and I wasn't having much luck finding bakeries that were willing to work with us. I either got a "No, we don't make that." or "No, we don't want to make that.", pretty discouraging to say the least. The moment I called these guys they were super ready to take on the challenge. They had their own version of this cake, but they tweaked their recipe to accommodate what we were looking for. We currently live in TX so all of this communication was done via phone and email, they even arranged a time for our parents/in-law's to stop by and try a sample of the cake since we couldn't be there. When our wedding day came they had pre-cut the sheet cakes, separated each piece with paper and kept everything frozen so nothing would melt during transportation. To say these guys bent over backwards is an understatement. The cake was delicious, everything went smoothly and we couldn't be happier with our experience, thank you! read more

When a customer brings back a cake specially ordered for a 65th wedding anniversary party because they were disappointed, stating the cake was dry, and the frosting wasn't right, do you: 1) Tell them they don't know what kind of "frosting" they really ordered? Even when the customer tells you they have ordered that "frosting" there, in the past? 2) Tell them you'll give them "something else" even though the event was for a special occasion held days prior? I don't need "something else" for $43.15 right now. A future credit was not offered 3) Tell them others at the bakery sampled the untouched cake that was returned, and the customer was essentially wrong? 4) OR, do you offer a refund and a deep apology, knowing the customer will return since this was obviously a fluke and you made them happy? Apparently the European Bakery in Falmouth thinks you do #1 - 3 and ignore #4. I'm sure lots of people will jump to their defense as it's usually a wonderful place. However, this time, they missed an opportunity to keep a customer. It's very unfortunate as I should not have had to ask for a refund, or made to feel like I don't know what I ordered. read more

I'm not sure if the name of this place relates to the origins of the owners or the style of baked goods they produce, but everything I've gotten so far has been quite tasty. Most recently I picked up an item from my mom, Strawberry Shortcake cupcake. It's exactly what it sounds like and my mom could not have been more thrilled with it! They have very tasty baklava and several local specialty things such as varietals of lobster tails, cream horns, turnovers, Etc. They also have a rack near the entrance of day-old items for discounted sale. So if you like baked goods enough and understand they're usually good for several days, it's well worth checking out. There perhaps a half-dozen tables around the interior near the counter and display cases, I assume because this is also supposedly a tea room. I've never looked at any particular menu related to that however. If I have the chance to sit still and have something there, which is unlikely with two kids as young as mine right now, I'll certainly check that menu out. read more
