I really like the management of The Fox. They turned a sleepy diner into one of Jacksonville's best places to dine. The managers care and take the time to meet and greet you at the door. They are a large part of the neighborhood too. The food is very good, I always get the "Avondale", and it is always prepared the right way for me. I really enjoy their coffee too. The only negative is the "crass" staff. I was there 12/28/2017, I was there to have a meeting with a colleague to discuss some items for our company. We'd had our meal, things were going well, and the waitress "Brittany" comes over and says, "I'll take that, there are people waiting in line, you need to go". Now I understand they work on tips, the staff wants to turn tables 2-3x an hour, I get it, but you can smile, pickup the check and move on "without comment". No need to insult me or my guest, she may have been having a bad day, but still, your problems are....your problems, keep them to yourself, be professional, like your managers are and allow me to have a nice meal with my colleague. I am writing this to make the management aware of this as again, it is one of the best places to dine and enjoy a meal in Jacksonville! read more

I open the door to enter the restaurant with my granddaughter last Friday morning and was greeted by an attack dog who told me to put a mask on. I did not have one and was told to leave by the woman with a very snarly voice. Before I left I looked around and saw a restaurant jam full of people sitting at their tables with no mask. What difference does it make a 6 foot walk to a table without a mask. I have eaten here several times and never been treated in a rude manner. I did ask if they had an extra mask just to walk to my table and they said no. I understand they have plenty of customers but that's no reason to treat a repeat customer in such an offensive manner. read more

Gives you all the southern diner vibes from the coffee to the ambience, and most of all the exceptional management and staff who remembers faces and always greets with small talk and a smile. Referred by a fellow Yelper- I tracked this little hole in the wall diner down in Avondale! First thing you walk into is the decor- crazy, retro, movie, novelty- I thought 70's & 80's but there is older too. Also- it's busy. We could've sat at the counter-top or one booth was left in the waaaayyyy back- Past 3 employees who all referred to it as the VIP section. VIP section is code for usually where the families with small shrieking children sit. Which was the case- and when the first family finally left as we got our food another on plopped in with even more kids- lol. Got it- VIP. Anywho~ I ordered the corned beef hash breakfast with scrambled eggs, fruit and a biscuit & hubby got the man omelet (my name for it)- packed with meats, meats and you guessed it- more meat. I dug right into the corned beef hash- it was sooooo goooood. Except- I am pretty sure the cook used hot sauce in it and I had to stop eating and pop a benadryl. My allergy- ugh. So I only ate a few bites and boxed up the rest- I did eat my fruit... and some of the eggs- but they too were dusted with red powder, so I avoided that too. Hubby on the other hand was extremely happy with his omelet. So- I'll be back, but I may have to actually be more careful about the menu. This place offers just average diner food. It's good, it's just like, "oh my gosh this isn't something I can already make at home." The atmosphere is what makes this place owner and servers usually have some sort of banter and the walls are covered in eclectic gems. It's fairly busy and I wouldn't go with more than a group of four. Think pancakes, omelettes, French Toast, etc I don't go here often because it is fairly simple. Yes the line is usually out the door. Yes the food is good solid diner fare. Is it gourmet? No. But for brekkies I want simple, hot, fresh, reliable. The Fox is a favorite diner of mine incongruently sandwiched between the high class stores in Avondale. This endears The Fox to me even more (especially if you consider the way The Derby changed from greasy spoon to high falutin' over in Five Points). What I like best about the Fox is that the wait staff is friendly, inked beautifully, have implausibly colored hair and 1 of the waitresses had winged eyeliner that rivaled Amy Winehouse's application. It was 8 in the morning. Glad I'm not the only one who likes the cat eye around here. Also, the memorabilia came straight outta my childhood so scarfing down a Greek omelette feels like home. The coffee could be stronger, but when I'm surrounded by unicorns, horses, Pee Wee, Mr. T, E.T, a gremlin, Luke Skywalker, kittens and a plethora of other kitsch, I physically cannot be irritated. Local art (Mark George in the house) and irreverent folk art grace the walls. A Pat Benatar poster dominates the ladies room. Come on. It can't get any more 80's perfect than that. I'm glad I came here. There was great customer service, I immediately felt welcome and had a booth by the window by myself. My server was very kind and the staff worked as a team and were all very friendly. I ordered the cliff omelette and asked for a different type of cheese and they were very accommodating. The food was great, my coffee was perfect and came with many warm ups and a hot to go cup. I ordered a to go plate for my husband at the same time as ordering my meal, and they timed it perfect, bringing it out as I was just finishing up my meal. Overall I had a great experience and look forward to coming back for a quiet breakfast by myself... or bring the family next time when they're off work and school. For several years now I've been wanting to give The Fox Restaurant another chance. I had a culinary bad experience a while back so I thought I'd give them another go. Add to that every Saturday I see a line of the good people of Avondale and Ortega and Riverside stretching out the door. Made up of the hoity-toity and the hoi polloi, the Burger-Meisters Meister Burger's of the area waiting to get in, so they must be doing something right. Or maybe,as I suspected, the yuppie scum and the wannabes of the area like lemmings and go where they are told. Well I think it's a compilation of both. The restaurant is shabby chic reminding me of the restaurant that was here in the 70s. The food is serviceable, at least the one meal I had consisting of an omelette toast and sausage, and tea with lemon. Actually the tea with lemon was absent lemon they ran out the waitress said. How do you run out of lemon for your sweet iced tea in the south for pity sake? The service was pretty good even though they were filled to capacity. So in conclusion it is an OK restaurant that somehow has got a hip reputation as the in place to hang with your peeps. Think a smallish Cracker Barrel with attitude. read more

Great food and even greater people. Have lived in riverside (on St. John's Ave even) for 3 years and had yet to stop in and eat here. Friday's, Saturday's and Sunday's there's a line out the door with people crowding outside waiting for a table. I'm not big on waiting 30-40 minutes in the heat for breakfast food. SO! I came here on a Wednesday morning after pulling a 12 hr night shift at the hospital. Barely a soul in the place, it was wonderful! Came in, sat down, and immediately the wait staff starts talking to you like they've known you for years. So attentive and genuinely hospitable. They tell you what you should try, you respond with what you're really craving and they tweek their recommendation to include everything that's good here. I had the waffle breakfast that included 2 eggs, home fries or grits, and bacon or turkey sausage. I had 2 fried eggs, home fries (crispy) and bacon. It was delicious! And of course I saved my waffle for last because I was craving sweets and that was like my dessert. The waffle batter has vanilla in it and it just like...Erhmergherdddd good! Recommendation: butter your waffle first thing, I put a pat of butter in each square; don't judge. Eat your other stuff and let the butter fully melt into that waffle before drizzling the syrup and SCARFING IT DOWN. You won't be able to help yourself. I can remember a few months ago and our first attempt to eat here and ending up across the street at The Brick by mistake. I also remember sitting there and looking across the street and asking, "what are all those people lining up for over there?" Then I saw it was The Fox. I told my LDC, "we're in the wrong place". No wonder there was no wait. But this weekend we got it right, I say facetiously. As we stood, 8th in line for our chance to be seated, I looked across the street at the empty Brick Restaurant and asked, "what is it about The Fox that makes people line up here like this?" I studied the crowd, both coming and going. I studied the chatter amongst the 18 to 30 year old group around us. My conclusion? They consider themselves chic for attending this weekend morning happening. How lucky for the owners of The Fox having become the provider of a fad. I was just hoping the food and service equaled all the hype. I ordered the pancake breakfast - 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 3 bacon and home fries. The LDC ordered the French Toast breakfast - scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, and home fries. 3 Stars - Pancakes - Not very light or fluffy but an interesting vanilla cake taste. 2 Stars - Bacon - Was not hot, was tough to bite, tasted like it was precooked, not to order. 4 Stars - Eggs - Very rich yellow yokes, great taste, cooked scrambled and over easy, were prefect. 2 Stars - Home Fries - Not to my liking. They are deep fried wedge cut potatoes. I prefer fine chopped and grilled. 3 Stars - French Toast - LDC said it was okay. 2.5 Stars - Turkey Sausage - LDC said it tasted like hot dog. 4 Stars - Service - Waitress was friendly, professional, and attentive. 4 Stars - Seater and Greeter - Very friendly, good job dude. As far as I can tell, The Fox is just another choke and puke, just another greasy spoon, just another diner. I was truly hoping it might be similar to Metro, something unique. It must have been the hype, or the exceeding expectation but we were not impressed. The crowds that line up here in abundance every weekend must be yearning for that neighborhood, good feeling thing. But if they think this is the best Avendale has to offer, all they need do is take a short walk across the street. read more

I showed up at The Fox around noon on Saturday in dire need of sustenance, heavy-carb, breakfast sustenance. Luckily there wasn't a line snaking out the door like most weekends, and we were able to slide into a booth immediately. After perusing the list of belgians, benedicts, biscuits and more, I decided on the Waffle Breakfast, featuring a Belgian Waffle with meat and side options. I opted for bacon (duh!) and a side of fruit. Our server was friendly and quick in taking our orders, and we only waited about ten or fifteen minutes for our food. In my starved state, that was an eternity, but let's not blame my hangover on this unassuming eatery! My waffle came out piping hot and golden brown with a little bowl of fresh cut bananas. I buttered it and added a swirl of syrup before digging in, and I have to say, it was a truly great waffle. It was perfectly crispy and buttery, with a really nice hint of nutmeg that just made me go MMMM! The eggs and bacon were simple and satisfying in both taste and presentation, and our sodas and coffees were refilled frequently. I felt as good as new after dining at The Fox this weekend, and I can assure you that it deserves its reputation as an Avondale staple! read more

There's no better place to go for a fantastic breakfast with friends on the weekends. Killer prices, an awesome staff, rockin' music and the best waffles you ever had make The Fox my absolute fave. Coming from much larger cities, I was really disappointed that Jacksonville was really short on diners to hit up for a late-night feast or a hungover brunch. But I love The Fox so much, I don't even care anymore. It's about the only place you can get breakfast in town and have a fighting chance of a kid-free atmosphere. The only thing that would make this place better is to serve alcohol and be open 24 hours (or at least late night). If you go during peak hours (10-1 on weekends), you might expect to wait 5 or 10 minutes for a table, but it's worth it. Highly recommended. read more

Things have seriously changed over the past year. The friendly atmosphere seems to only be available to regulars. The new servers are less than friendly and pay little to no attention to their tables (unless they're regulars). Don't be fooled by the shoddy exterior/missing 'A' in 'REST_URANT'! If my lunch crew cuts out on me, I'm going to The Fox. Not much space for larger parties, but man, those diner booths can be entertaining. Oh, and the food is consistently good. Today the manager took time out of his busy lunch rush to point out/laugh at the ridiculous couple riding together on a motorcycle in matching head-to-toe light denim and white helmets "like a couple of stormtroopers". Another time we took care in splicing a local lawyer's magnet listing services, including "DOG ATTACKS". He saved it for later. I can only imagine similar conversations led to the quirky collages and pastiche all over the walls. The food is diner fare done well - prompt and accurate. Breakfast all day, and a good selection of hot/cold sandwiches. The turkey gravy is delicious, just don't expect to be able to ward off a food coma after eating the chicken fried steak. Kids profess their love of The Fox in crayon drawings on the wall - one says "THE FOX VS. THE COOL MOOSE...FOX WINS!" Agreed, young buck. read more

So even though the line was long and out the door...they had a small coffee stand outside for you to get caffinated while you wait.The line moves quick...so you don't have to wait too long. The food is great! Its pretty much Diner, but with more taste and flavors and less grease. I got the corn bean hash and eggs. As always with me, i was only able to eat half and take the ither half home. The staff is amazing! The owner chatted with us for a while to check in on the service. For living out of town, I am a regular. Breakfast is always good. Their corn-beef hash is home-made right there and is the finest. Pancakes are light and tender. At lunch I have yet to get by past their burgers. Really good and pattied there so it is safe for me to get mine medium rare. I love their home made potato salad, but you may not like it. Good quick food. In the 5 years I've been coming here they have NEVER messed up an order. NEVER. That in itself is impressive. The menu is pretty basic but then again they don't try to be something they are not either. They are a diner that serves basic diner fare. My personal favorites are the Tropical Omelette for breakfast and the Rueben for lunch. If you like coffee, they offer a great cup of coffee. It's nothing gourmet. Just locally roasted Martin's Coffee... but very tasty. the only negative about this place is that it is not good for larger parties to sit together. The tables max out at 5 (if you add a folding chair in the aisle). if you get there before the rush, you have a chance at maybe sitting in back to back booths. For the wait at the door and the prices, it was not worth it. $1.50 for an extra egg? Ridiculous. Could've been better if it was cooked right and nothing was: The corned beef was half over cooked and half under cooked...On top of that my eggs we were under cooked (slimy sunny side up-- I could only eat one of them.) This is probably one of the best places for breakfast. Very small inside but we luckily found a booth. Good classic rock playing and awesome retro decor. Staff was friendly and helpful. I tried the Hawaii 5-0 omelette with fruit and a biscuit. The biscuit was amazing. Not dry at all and very fluffy. The omelette was packed with ham, onions, and pineapple and lots of yummy Provolone cheese. Fruit was normal cantaloupe and honey do melon.
