With its unique charm of a diner the food is excellent with good portions. I got the big V with cheesesteak on top of a burger and it didn't disappoint. This place has been on our list to try for a while and so glad we finally was able to stop by for Sunday brunch. Breakfast is served all day and my father-in-law got the waffle bowl breakfast bowl. It looked crazy good!! Literally a waffle turned into a bowl filled with eggs, meat and cheese. I grabbed the Turkey club on white. So satisfying and helped fulfill the diner experience for me. This gem is tucked away in the north east corner of the parking lot with sometimes their food truck parked out front. It can be a little confusing as it has gone by a few different names, it is currently Dano's Diner, but WAS home Plate Diner. Check their hours before you go. My hubby and I found this place almost by accident. He was hungry. He asked Google where the closest restaurant was and boom here we are. The owner of this place is a real character. We enjoyed our breakfast as well as a little bit of banter.. we had a good laugh. Hubby loves corned beef hash and this place got it right. He was super happy. I like to try different things that are local and they have a sausage dipped in pancake batter that is really good too. my only complaint is that he's a Trump guy, but nobody's perfect. Went to Dano's Diner for brunch this morning. If you're looking for a no-frills breakfast that you don't feel like making yourself at home, then Dano's is the place. This is the Bowser Bowl. A simple waffle shaped bowl filled with three eggs cooked to your preference (I chose scrambled), and your choice of a variety of fillings. I went with a sausage patty and cheese. Okaaaayy, first of all, that stuff on the menu is obviously facetious. Whether they're conservative or liberal, it says Bernie Sanders tried redistribute their property, but didn't know how to split the eggs. Rofl. The joint is kind of dirty, and people aren't as forgiving about that nowadays. I like the setting, but when I picked up my cup of coffee, the back of my hand brushed against some sticky syrup on the table. The area of the tablecloth near the napkins and other stuff is a slightly different color. The seats are dirty, the windows are dirty, and the floors are dirty. There was even a cigarette butt on the floor next to me when I first came in. I suspect the owner, to some extent, doesn't care or even feels nostalgia for the days when you could smoke in a grimy diner as you drop a coin into the jukebox. I care......only a little bit. I'm here for food, and the food was cheap, simple, but pretty good overall. My coffee was hot. I'd like it even darker and more bitter, but then other customers would complain I'm sure. The pancakes were large and fluffy. My eggs were how I ordered them. I'm always hoping for bigger sausage links, but these were fine. Bacon was fine too. Biscuits were also quite fluffy, and the gravy was warm and savory. The amount of saltiness was just right for me. I didn't have any real issues with the food. WAS a fun place for a very good and satisfying breakfast... "WAS" is the key word here as I use to eat there on average at least 3 times a month. Then, when I found out I was being charged every now and then over $3 dollars for a bagel and a little tin of Cream Cheese PLUS an unusually high % for using a debit/credit card, I thought I'd give it a rest... I finally went back after a 5 month boycott only to be told, as I was at the cash register that he charges 40 cents for a cup of water or 50 cents for a cup of water with ice! I semi-like the atmoshere and the food is generally very good, BUT - being over charged for certain items is absolutely rediculous and what he'll charge next time? Who knows... read more

Also known as the "Home Run Inn" this is a basic but decent diner off Mayport Rd. There is a large and extensive breakfast menu. Prices were good and you have a large selection of choices to choose from. We got there at lunchtime so we had burgers. There are many choices for large 1/3 pound burgers: cheese, bacon, veggie, chili. One option includes diced bacon in the meat itself; another had cheese injected into the burger. Mine was the BBQ burger, messy but good. Burgers do not include fries but fries are available in two sizes as a side. We had onion rings that were thick, cooked nicely, and with a slightly sweet batter. Tasty. The diner itself is decorated with many pro-Donald Trump paraphernalia. We had no issue either way but some folks may not appreciate it. The owner was brash, loud, and thought of himself as a great jokster and story teller. Picked up an order for my husband and I. He enjoyed the Sausage and Gravy. The meal had a lot of sausage but wasn't as spicy as he enjoys, two biscuits were baked properly and the gravy was okay consistency. Overall, he rated his meal a 3 of 5 stars. The chipped beef was where the problems occurred. The white bread was the only half way decent part, but wasn't fully toasted to perfection. It was very soggy and droopy. Even opening the container the entire meal looked sad. The beef wasn't cooked properly and neither was the sauce. I've made this meal from scratch and had it in diners across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I can tell you just by looking whether or not it would be good. The sauce didn't have enough flour and water more watery consistency. Was water used or milk? Never used water. Creamed chipped beef should be well.. creamy. This wasn't. Way too much pepper and there was little to no salt. A veteran would be ashamed of this meal if it was placed in front of them. There are other local eateries that have better creamed chipped beef including Penman and Metro. Lastly, don't put anything political in your business. It isn't appropriate. The reviews are actually ridiculous and so dramatic. This place is a small diner with a bunch of menu items. All the food is cooked once you order so it is obviously going to take time to make the food. Don't go out to eat if you can't wait for your food to be made. We were greeted right when we walked in and were told to sit wherever we liked. Our server was a blonde girl. She was the only server but she was so kind and attentive. It was our first time so she gave us a whole run down of the menu, the backstory of the place, etc. The food took a little bit but it's a restaurant so it was to be expected. BUT it was delicious and steaming hot!!!! We had a Buffalo chicken wrap, the steak and cheese sandwich, and a side of fries. Everything was delicious! The owner likes to interact and crack jokes with the customers, so if you can't take a joke, this probably isn't the place for you. Overall it's super cheap for what you get, great food, and great people. My family and I definitely will be back and will be recommending this place to others. read more

Love the menu with all of its variety to satisfy everyone in the house. We had burgers, chicken, fish, quesadillas plus sides. Everything was delicious. There was an issue with our order (grub hub mistake) and when we called to alert the restaurant, not only did the owner apologize for the problem, he personally delivered the missing entree and then a couple hours later he called us to ask whether everything was ok and if we enjoyed the food! Anyone who cares that much about their business and demonstrates above and beyond customer service alone would get five stars from me, but happily the food merits 5 stars as well. read more

This might be the worst café in which my husband and I have ever dined. Where do I begin?! When this place was called Homeplate Diner, it was a fabulous little hole in the wall decorated with sports memorabilia. It had fabulous homestyle breakfasts. It was slightly disheveled but clean. What a difference a new owner and a new name make! The floors of Dano's Diner were filthy dirty. There was extra furniture and chairs stacked up in the restaurant. My husband had an omelette that was dry as a bone and hashbrowns that were terrible. I had eggs Benedict which had a sickening yellow sauce all over it. In a word, nauseating. They didn't bring my sausage and they didn't bring my hashbrowns. When they came they were terrible. My brother had a hamburger that he reported to be halfway decent; however, it looked awful also. The new owners of this once iconic little diner should be ashamed of themselves. The health department needs to look into how the places run. A particular concern was the filthy floor. It obviously hadn't been cleaned in weeks. The plants were dead in the restaurant as well! The problem could be that they can't find anybody to work there. Person we thought was the owner was apparently doing the cooking and was grumbling and ranting about having to do so. But that is no excuse for the filthy conditions and there was a Sir I see nail server working there. The manager also insulted us because he did not want to cook in his own restaurant. Formerly of Colonel Mustards Phat Burgers (he sold it) his style might put some off, but he is a teddy bear under it all. We eat breakfast here every Sunday. The portions are so large that we rarely eat lunch! 5 egg omelets. Best sausage gravy and biscuits, especially with poached eggs on top. Even Chipped Beef on toast! Lunch is solid. The Colonels famous burgers, steak sandwiches and more. Get the roulette burger, it's whatever they feel like making for you!! My food was not ready when I got to Dano's Diner on Mayport Rd. Our burgers were incorrectly marked in containers. I went in this morning at 7:55 to get breakfast with my son before school started while in uniform. One of the employees or maybe friend opened the door for us (very nice) and yelled for the cook/owner that he had customers. there were no customers inside and we were waiting for 10 minutes. while waiting the cook comes out mixing what looks like grits then goes back to the kitchen. a couple of minutes pass and another employee comes inside and goes to the back where the cook/owner is. still no service. i left. i feel like that was very rude to not even get greeted or asked if we needed assistance. i looked them up on google and they have really good reviews but wish i would have came to yelp first smh read more

I took my grandsons here for breakfast on Labor Day. They were obviously short staffed . We waited a while, then the owner came out and started taking orders. Now, I get it--his shtick as the crusty old curmudgeon has been a thing for years. But a little of that goes a long way--at least for me--I don't like men standing over me being loud and obnoxious. The food was good. The chicken and waffle sliders were generous and tasty. They use paper plates(!?) I know it's his place and he can do whatever the hell he wants, right? This place is incredible for all the wrong reasons. The vibe is beyond creepy. A sort of "Ted Bundy Ate Here" auro. We failed to read any of the signs before we sat down, but it was quickly apparent that we were in an angry place. We ordered coffee and water, which came in styrofoam cups with the coffee offering barely more flavour than the water. We viewed the menu and found more anger in the form of the owner's message to the world. Our instincts told us to pay for our coffee and leave, but we'd come this far and the claims of "Phreshness" and "passion" for cooking compelled us to stay and order. Fatal error. My "Western" omelette was amazing, again for the all the wrong reasons. I pondered how it was possible to combine green peppers, onions, ham and eggs into the bland, tasteless messs in front of me. Hash browns were brown, crispy and nothing. My mates "Breakfast sandwich" was inedible. It consisted of a thin wafer of ham (Budig's?), a dusting of yellow cheese-like substance, a looked-to-be-fried-yesterday hard, crispy egg on stale wheat toast. And no, none of this lack of taste was Covid related, though the anti-vax, no-masker clientelle probally couldn't tell the difference. We struggle to give this place one star. It deserves none. (5 egg omelette). This thing was huge and stuffed with everything. Very good flavor and not dry at all. I added some hot sauce and it was perfect. My family and i visited this Diner after camping at Hannah park. We woke up Sunday morning starved, so I Yelped a good breakfast spot nearby. We pulled up and the place was packed! Good sign #1. This place has an old baseball, diner, 60's feel to it. We were greeted by smiling faces and good vibes! The menu is very impressive and the prices are "Family Friendly". The owner has a funny sense of humor that we enjoyed to see. The food was delish and filling, and the music was pleasant old jams we enjoyed listening to. We will back. read more

They say they're not fancy -- guys, it's not "fancy" to clean the gunk off the place once in a while. I'd give them zero stars, but it's not an option. The owner clearly is quite the character, evident through his story on the menu and signage throughout... gave us a laugh but certainly could be off putting to some people, but I don't think he's worried about that. Good cheap prices, but unfortunately our dining experience was not good, and that's what is necessary for a restaurant to succeed. My initial impression was that the restaurant could use a scrub. Our table was messy, some coffee and syrup visably on the table even though it had been reset... maybe that's a rare miss for them. But overall the restaurant seemed warn in and the walls a bit dingy... not that it means my food is impacted, but it's certainly off putting. But the food... not great. My husband got coffee he gave back because it was "the worst cup of coffee he ever had"... and he's not a picky coffee drinker. Never seen him send a cup back. My iced tea was bitter but I suffered through. Hash browns were very similar to those at waffle house, which isn't bad but I was hoping for something more fresh tasting (as the owner advertises "fresh not fast"). Eggs fine, standard. Sausage patties were hardly browned, and there was a really bold spice (maybe clove?) that we found off putting. The pancakes were actually pretty good, fluffy... But about 1/5 of each of the 2 pancakes weren't cooked... just batter. Toast was cooked lightly on the grill meaning it was chewy rather than crispy. So we won't be coming back. Maybe if we lived really close, we'd consider giving the burgers a try (maybe breakfast isn't their thing).. But that would only be for the hope of convenience. This place definitely has an old school diner vibe. They have the best made to order breakfast and lunch in town any day. Dinner is awesome and made to order Thursday - Saturday nights as well. Great diner that those who understand humor must try. It's 50's baseball themed that makes you feel like your steeping into the past. So I walked in and the Colonel tells me the ugly section is over there... . That's contrary to what the ladies tell me, and it caught me off guard but it made me laugh. I ordered a coffee and biscuits and gravy. While I wait for my food the Colonel tells a kid he's a brat and should eat his food and not play with it. Then he says that's why he hates kids. The kid was young but smiling, and his dad was laughing. When a couple left they said they would be back, and he told them not to and to go to Hardee's Hahaha. An older gentleman who worked there, who could have been the owner, was extremely annoying and spilled hot coffee on me as he attempted to jokingly carry the pot over my head while his hand was shaking. He also smacked my phone while it was in my hand and continued to harrass me and several other customers that he targeted.That was the first time I had been there, I didnt know the guy, and I was not trying to interact or play along with act. Not sure what his deal was, but he is the sole reason why I will not be going back there because the food and the rest of the staff were great. Which is why I give 2 stars instead of 1. If you see good reviews it was probably the owner. This was the worst diner I have ever been. It is dirty and Everything is served on Styrofoam and plastic forks. The cheese omelet was scrambled eggs with partially melted shredded cheese on top. The home fries were so brown and hard. You can tell just by looking at them they were way overcooked.
