Steffens Diner has been on my radar for a while. Living in Callahan, Friday date nights with my wife can be challenging when restaurant options are scarce and repetitive. Opening Yelp, I check the list of saved restaurants, and my wife points out this place. I mean, 4.9 stars with 525 reviews, and the Google rating is 4.6 with 3450 contributions. One would think with all those stars, you'd be guaranteed a great experience. That, of course, may end the evening with "brown chicken, brown cow." We arrive, and immediate retro-dinner vibes set in. As we walk past the back door into the kitchen, we see two small, well-used smokers. My first thought was, "Whatever gets the job done." I know I have turned out many great cuts of meat from mine. Next, I notice an older woman struggling to smoke a cigarette, hacking away; it was a clear sign she should quit. We walk into the restaurant, and the retro vibe continues, from the old diner seats and tables to the music playing from the ceiling speakers. Being a car guy, I liked the row of model cars above the bar, but they could use a feather duster or a Swiffer. One word of caution: if you are heading to the restrooms, be aware of the sudden change in floor elevation; there is no warning, and a trip-and-fall is possible. The first waitress comes over after we're seated; she looks like she had a rough day, judging by the leftover food on her black shirt. At least the table was clean and well-designed. Turning to the reviews, the highlighted items are fried chicken, country fried steak, and a few others. The menu offers some unexpected options, like crab-stuffed cod and beef bourguignon, demonstrating nice variety. If this were an indication of how the rest of the meal is going to go, the "made fresh every day" motto displayed would be a treat. Well, except for setting caution aside for the hot items. Our dishes arrived, and the presentation was decent. My wife's dish looked good, but my beef bourguignon seemed very old and overdone. We said grace and started eating; well, so much for that "it's made fresh every day" motto. If mine were made fresh, the chef would likely have killed it twice. The chew of the first bite was so dry and long that it could have made Wrigley's gum proud. It took me back to my high school days when Hubba Bubba bubble gum first appeared. (Yes, I am that old.) I tried to push through it, hoping for a moist bite and those seasonal flavor notes; alas, they never came. The flavor profile was missing Rosemary and bold red-wine notes. Julia Child would be rolling over in her grave. I grabbed a piece of the cornbread that came with our selection to dip into Aujour. Well, you would have to question whether anyone tastes the items before serving them? A box of Jiffy Cornbread mix has more moisture and texture. It was something with the biscuits. There was still flour on the putter surface of the biscuits. Our server came by to check on us, and we didn't hold back our disappointment. She went to the kitchen, apparently took a piece, and confirmed it wasn't good. She then said she would comp the meal and offered to replace it with anything I wanted. Just then, my wife reacted after her second bite of the crab-stuffed codfish. It turns out she had a piece of crab shell lodged between her gums and a tooth, which was very painful--way worse than biting into a popcorn shell. Once it was removed, she managed to get a few more bites in before CRUNCH!!--another shell. By this point, the experience had fallen short of what we had seen in the reviews. The server returned and asked if we were interested in dessert. We agreed on a slice of Limoncello cake. When it arrived, it looked amazing again, but the first bite told the story. This was supposed to be Limoncello, and it was clear that the lemon had left the chat... I was thankful for the extra lemon I ordered for my sweet tea; once a squeeze of lemon juice was added, the chat was revived. The fried okra, Southern-style macaroni and cheese, fried shrimp, grits, fried green tomatoes, chicken... honestly, I haven't tried a single thing I didn't love. And the sweet tea? When you walk into a restaurant and sit down at a table (self seating) and the place is not very busy at all and you wait and wait while servers walk around with nothing to do and talk amongst themselves and no one acknowledges you or takes a drink order or brings you a menu it makes for a bad experience. The only server who seemed busy and was working very hard was a tall slim girl finally came to the table and did a good job. But before she arrived I sat for 8 minutes. There is no excuse for this kind of service in a restaurant with only a few tables occupied. The one server that was tending to customers could have taken care of the whole place. The presentation was horrible like it was just thrown into a dish as if they were doing us a favor. My husband had the catfish - 2 tiny little catfish once again thrown into a plate no garnishes. We found Steffens when we looked on Google Maps for a place to eat. They are off the beaten path that we normally travel but oh so worth the find. When we pulled up you knew how good they much be the parking lot was packed and this was just a Monday about 12:30 pm. We found a place to park and went inside, we waited about 10 minutes to be seated, so worth it. Busy busy place. Our waitress came and took our drink orders as we still wanted to decide from the menu, she came back and we ordered. My daughter and I got liver and onions, she got the greens and macaroni and cheese and I got mashed potatoes and creamed corn. The mashed potatoes are real and the creamed corn is homemade. All of it was oh so good. He got biscuits and gravy and pancakes, they tasted like grandmas house. Everything was oh so good. The waitress was amazing kept our glasses full and came by often to see if we needed anything. Portions are not small which made him happy. It's only 252 miles from our house in St. Petersburg, Fl to Steffens in Kingsland, Ga. The drive is worth it just for the collard greens. Sweet, a hint of heat, pork pieces, some stems (meaning these are the real deal). Best I've had since Elliot's mom taught me how to make greens back in 1978. We ate here twice in the last week. Once on the way to Durham. Once on the way back home. Fried chicken crispy and moist. Liver and Onions amazing. The beef tips in bourbon sauce was fantastic! Asked how I wanted them. Medium rare I said, hopeful but not really expecting anything. They were done absolutely perfect to my taste of medium rare. Pink center, tender, juicy, tasty. Not over-sauced with the bourbon sauce. I am so glad we met a little angel in Kingsland that told us to check out Steffens. We got there around 11:30 which ended up being crucial to beat the crowd! Clean little establishment with maybe 15 tables and a bar. Our hostess was lovely and our waitress was excellent. She helped us decide between chicken and waffles (one of my favorites) and chicken biscuits and gravy. She talked me into the latter. We had been tipped off before coming that the French toast is really good. I think the 4 biscuits came with my partner's Porkchop plate but they came out first. We ate these with honey and butter. Apple butter and jelly also available at the table. The meals were great. Good ole Southern Cooking! I got a water. We heard the sweet tea was great but my partner said it was okay. Maybe not a MUST. Talk about a DIAMOND in the rough!!! This place was AWESOME! I happen to stumble upon this place with family after taking a ride on the Saint Mary's railroad out of Kingsland on their Easter train ride with the kiddos. The thought of a diner after a train ride for lunch sounded great. We pulled up to the place and it looks very small from the outside but when you get inside, it's hard to wrap your mind around. How much is inside there when you look at it from the outside. We were quickly able to secure a big table for a party of 8. After briefly looking around and glancing at the menu this place screams old school 60s and 70s diner. The food is true southern style grub. When you have to wait 20 minutes for them to fry chicken the right way you know you're at a good southern cooking establishment. I tried to order something off of the daily special menu the "Country PBT with eggs" however it was sold out by the time I showed up. So I opted for the fish and grits. The order came with a selection of cod, whitefish or catfish. I opted for the cod, blackened, and the fish when it arrived had so much flavor. I just put it on top of my grits and mixed it all in and it tasted heavenly. The food at this place, reminds me of another establishment that I went to up in Wrens, GA - called: Peggy's. (You can look them up on yelp.) Just like there, Steffens did not disappoint with the southern cooking. We didn't have time for ice cream maybe next time and we will definitely be back at this location again because we ride the Saint Mary's Railroad quite frequently. I can't remember our servers's name but she had to have been in her late 40's and to hear her say that. she's been working at the same restaurant since she was 14 years old is definitely something to be proud of. **Overall, I highly recommend this place over all other chain local restaurants.
