Chicken and dumplings were the day's special and that most comfortable of comfort foods filled me up. My questions were all answered by the friendly server who happened to be behind the counter when I sat down. I can't believe we've not been here before! The food was amazing, the prices very reasonable, and the service fast and friendly. They served our large party of mostly Yankees (this Georgia gal being the exception) with diplomacy , kindly explaining what hush puppies and grits were. Here's the scoop! We're headed home on I-95 and we needed to have breakfast. Our biggest problem is finding a restaurant that has parking for our 30 ft RV. So I let my Yelp App guide me to this old fashioned adorable southern restaurant. The place was packed to the gills'. All of the help were so nice, from the greeter, to the man who cleaned off a table for us, to the young lady that gave us menus and coffee and finally to our server Brittany! She took our orders, refilled our coffee cups, got Dave ice water and hot sauce! I ordered the western omelet which was loaded with ham and fresh veggies. Brittany showed up quickly and orders placed. 7 minutes wait time with a full house- real good. My scrambled eggs were just right. My wife Judy's omelette was over sized. It's only 252 miles from our house in St. Petersburg, Fl to Steffens in Kingsland, Ga. The drive is worth it just for the collard greens. Sweet, a hint of heat, pork pieces, some stems (meaning these are the real deal). Best I've had since Elliot's mom taught me how to make greens back in 1978. We ate here twice in the last week. Once on the way to Durham. Once on the way back home. Fried chicken crispy and moist. Liver and Onions amazing. The beef tips in bourbon sauce was fantastic! Asked how I wanted them. Medium rare I said, hopeful but not really expecting anything. They were done absolutely perfect to my taste of medium rare. Pink center, tender, juicy, tasty. Not over-sauced with the bourbon sauce. Just the right amount of one tasty sauce to compliment the already delicious tips. Wow! Real home made mashed potatoes (pieces of potato in there just the way I like it). Fried okra. Amazing. We found Steffens when we looked on Google Maps for a place to eat. They are off the beaten path that we normally travel but oh so worth the find. When we pulled up you knew how good they much be the parking lot was packed and this was just a Monday about 12:30 pm. We found a place to park and went inside, we waited about 10 minutes to be seated, so worth it. Busy busy place. Our waitress came and took our drink orders as we still wanted to decide from the menu, she came back and we ordered. My daughter and I got liver and onions, she got the greens and macaroni and cheese and I got mashed potatoes and creamed corn. The mashed potatoes are real and the creamed corn is homemade. All of it was oh so good. He got biscuits and gravy and pancakes, they tasted like grandmas house. Everything was oh so good. The waitress was amazing kept our glasses full and came by often to see if we needed anything. Portions are not small which made him happy. I happen to stumble upon this place with family after taking a ride on the Saint Mary's railroad out of Kingsland on their Easter train ride with the kiddos. The thought of a diner after a train ride for lunch sounded great. We pulled up to the place and it looks very small from the outside but when you get inside, it's hard to wrap your mind around. How much is inside there when you look at it from the outside. We were quickly able to secure a big table for a party of 8. After briefly looking around and glancing at the menu this place screams old school 60s and 70s diner. The food is true southern style grub. When you have to wait 20 minutes for them to fry chicken the right way you know you're at a good southern cooking establishment. I tried to order something off of the daily special menu the "Country PBT with eggs" however it was sold out by the time I showed up. So I opted for the fish and grits. The order came with a selection of cod, whitefish or catfish. I opted for the cod, blackened, and the fish when it arrived had so much flavor. I just put it on top of my grits and mixed it all in and it tasted heavenly. The food at this place, reminds me of another establishment that I went to up in Wrens, GA - called: Peggy's. (You can look them up on yelp.) Just like there, Steffens did not disappoint with the southern cooking. We didn't have time for ice cream maybe next time and we will definitely be back at this location again because we ride the Saint Mary's Railroad quite frequently. I can't remember our servers's name but she had to have been in her late 40's and to hear her say that. she's been working at the same restaurant since she was 14 years old is definitely something to be proud of. **Overall, I highly recommend this place over all other chain local restaurants. Eggs done right, grits were tasty, 3 bacon strips a bit crunchy and on the small and thin side. The biscuits were not good. Had to "saw" my way through them to split in half and they were not flakey! More like a miniature bread loaf, but, biscuit size! I'd order toast if I ate here again. (Just passing thru town). They did have real butter which was a plus and coffee refills pretty frequent. I am so glad we met a little angel in Kingsland that told us to check out Steffens. We got there around 11:30 which ended up being crucial to beat the crowd! Clean little establishment with maybe 15 tables and a bar. Our hostess was lovely and our waitress was excellent. She helped us decide between chicken and waffles (one of my favorites) and chicken biscuits and gravy. She talked me into the latter. We had been tipped off before coming that the French toast is really good. I think the 4 biscuits came with my partner's Porkchop plate but they came out first. We ate these with honey and butter. Apple butter and jelly also available at the table. The meals were great. Good ole Southern Cooking! I got a water. We heard the sweet tea was great but my partner said it was okay. Maybe not a MUST.
