Breakfast anyone? On this Mother's Day all I wanted was some coffee and something yummy for my belly. So we all got in the car and headed to Avondale for The Fox Restaurant. When you walk up it's a cute small restaurant that packs a mighty punch with their decor, vibe and the menu. Normally the line is pretty long to get it but it moved quickly. While in line I was greeted by the owner Ian. He was so friendly and charismatic. He sat me down as I waited for my husband and kid to join and handed me a nice hot coffee which was soooooo good! The restaurant is decorated with all vintage art work and hand drawn art work from patrons. As well as different signs with funny phrases. My favorite was sign said " If you are grouchy, irritable or just plain mean, there will be a $10 charge for putting up with you". Hahah I read it to my son because he tried to get mad about his dad taking forever to get the tablet out the car lol. Now back to the food! I had the French toast, with eggs over medium, turkey sausage and fruit. Everything was so good! I also caught a glimpse of their biscuits and I will definitely be back to try them. Besides the excellent service there I like that my Togo items were in a bag that said "Eat Local, Eat Often". I try to buy local as much but more importantly I love being able to support a local business as well as something that is a staple in the community. I loved this place from the moment we walked in the door. We had just flown in, and we were hungry and tired. We were greeted right away, told we could sit wherever we wanted. Our waitress immediately came over and took our order. The food came quickly. The food was superb! Mark had an omelet and I had the mini which was one egg (cooked my way) bacon, home fries, and raisin toast, because when raisin toast is an option on the menu, you have to get it. I stopped in here for a last minute Sunday breakfast/brunch. I can never seem to make it to a breakfast house early enough. I made it about 15mins before closing. The staff was nice enough to allow me to place an order and the time to eat it. They close at 2PM. I had a typical breakfast combo. 2 eggs, 2 pancakes and 4 pieces of turkey link sausages. Breakfast tasted great ! The pancakes were a little crispy just the way I like it. The atmosphere puts you in the mind of a diner or what we call in Chicago a "truck stop". I thought it was really cool to see all the future Picassos of the world. Lol The walls featured children's attempts of drawing a fox. It was also nice of the owner to come by and chat with me. I honestly don't know why I don't come here more often! It's so good. The corned beef hash is literally my favorite breakfast item. They make it PERFECT. It's a nice char and the center is moist. Literally the best. The cheese eggs are really good as well. The grits are ok. I think I'm just picky with grits and prefer it made with heavy cream vs water. The biscuit is AMAZING. If you love diners and live in or around Avondale, then you need to try this spot. A classic diner with delicious food, I don't know how you could not love Fox. There's always a line for brunch on the weekend but it moves fast. My go-to is the tuna melt. I add bacon and red onion to it and it's delicious - gooey with crunchy bacon and thinly shaved red onion. I've watched them make it from the bar and was appalled by the insane amount of salt and butter, but it's so good I would still get it again. The pimento cheese burger is also excellent: cheesy and with a great sear - they cook it to medium which I would not necessarily ask for but I do like here. Onion rings are delicious. The booths are a fun place to sit at and admire all the hokey decorations. The bar is also a great spot if it's just you and a partner. This place is not large enough for a group bigger than four. Service is great - super friendly and funny. We have a great time every time we come here! read more

It was a Thursday morning around 9:30 and it was standing room only. In fact we had to wait outside and were the first in line (outside). It took about 25 minutes before we finally got seated, but I will give the owner kudos for continually checking on us from time to time while we waited and letting us know how much longer it would be before we got seated. The wait was worth it. I had biscuits and gravy with a side order of crispy bacon. It was all very satisfying and delicious. The endless coffee hit the spot. The old style diner played older music and made one feel super comfortable. There's bar seating as well as booths and tables inside. There's also a couple of small tables with seating outside, but in Florida's heat and humidity it's nice to sit inside this time of year. 5 stars for great food and exemplary service. Great retro diner in Avondale. When you step inside, it feels like you're thrown back in time as if you're at a NYC or New Orleans diner with friendly staff. You can sit at the countertop in front of the grill. But my favorite part is that they serve the entire menu for breakfast. So you can order chili cheese fries if you wanted to start your day. I love a traditional american breakfast but i did not want to go to a regular diner, and that is how we can across this family owned restaurant less than 2 miles from our home. We had a two pancake breakfast and an omellete. The eggs are freshly cracked, the sausage tastes like heaven and does not compare to anything store bought, it tastes homemade! The pancakes had a nice toasty color on the bottom and also you can tell they make the batter every mornig. The biscuit was TO DIE FOR, it is sooooo soft and flavorful. We had it with the sausage gravy and it was a hit. The service was one of the best i have ever had. Very attentive, refilled my coffee as soon as it was half way, refilled our waters often, checked on us all the time and had such a positive energy that made it feel very welcoming and homey. The ambiance reminds me of a cozy home, every person that walked was so happy to be there, the staff love what they do and all the wall decor adds to the history of this restaurant. 10/10 experience! read more

The Fox is one of my favorite spots to grab breakfast on the weekend! There's usually a crowd, so I try to get there either early morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the rush. Even if I do have to wait, the line moves quickly, and the owners are often outside chatting with guests, which makes the wait bearable. My go-to meal is the French toast with grits and sweet tea, always delicious and perfectly cooked. First of all, I love the way that the owner, Ian, greets all of his guests! The food is amazing. I usually get the Lemmy omelette.... It's delicious, and without the cheese it's very calorie conscious. Servers is always attentive, no matter who we get. Just incredible diner style food. What a fine! We were in the area and stumbled across the Fox restaurant. Ian, the owner happened to be there, I get the feeling he is there every day, and was beyond friendly. Our server,Sarah, provided incredible insight into the menu items. She has worked there for eight years! The food here is some of the best food I have ever had at a breakfast restaurant in my life. I'll just say first off. I have no idea why this place isn't more popular. That being said I've heard about it for years and finally got around to trying it. When I first arrived I immediately felted welcomed because it felt like a diner with super great energy. The place was clean and just felt really at home. The servers or whomever was behind the bar asked me how many was eating in and told me to choose where I would like. I asked and pointed to confirm is a certain table was ok and they agreed. Upon sitting down we were promptly greeted and asked if we would like drinks. Those did not take long at all to come out. Then we ordered and were checked on at least once before our food arrived. Let me just say, I order scrambled eggs soft everywhere I go and very very few places have gotten them right. I didn't mention any of this and didn't even say anything more than just scrambled eggs soft. My eggs may not look like it from the picture but they were perfect! They were soft scrambled with a little runny in them exactly how I like them. My cheese grits were pretty normal and great. But the pancakes, they were way better than I was expecting. They were so good that I actually finished them all. As usually I only finish half and don't care to finish the rest. Absolutely can't wait to come back and try more items. read more

My favorite go to diner. I'm a sucker for their chili with a grilled cheese sandwich! Comfort food in the exact right way. Teen enjoys the blueberry waffles with fresh fruit. Fruit is always a good mix and not simply the cheap melons. Place is killer with the vibes! The man at the door is by far the coolest hostess to exist. The customer service we received from Sarah has to be the worst we have ever had. She would not check on us and when i was finally able to get her attention and ask for some mayo she walked away so fast i couldn't even ask for napkins. When she brought the mayo she threw it down and turned to walk away. She never looked at us or really spoke facing us. I have never had someone be so rude even when paying she thew or card in the middle of the table. I had to ask the much nicer lady for boxes and a bag because Sarah didn't help us. Came for breakfast and all three of us enjoyed our omelettes. The pesto on mine was a surprisingly good addition to all the vegetables, cheese and egg. The biscuit was big, fluffy and buttery. This isn't our first time but it has been over a year. We arrived around 12:30 (Sunday) and got lucky and didn't have to wait. Ellen greeted us and got our drink orders while we looked over the menus. We ordered and didn't have to wait long for our food. Our complaints: friendly staff, really attentive, too much bacon, food was cooked perfectly, really cool and fun decor. I got bacon cheeseburger with provolone and fries with side of ranch. We haven't been to The Fox in a long time and my son suggested it for breakfast for Mother's Day weekend. We arrived early and had a short wait for a table. There's always a line outside so that tells you something right there! We were waited on right away and we ordered the eggs and corned beef hash (scrambled for hubby and over easy for my son) and I had the Ortega omelette. The corned beef hash is made in house and it is fantastic! I will order it the next time we go. The Ortega omelette was delish as well and tasted so fresh with the fresh tomatoes on top. I would absolutely get it again. The biscuits were yummy and the grits were nice and creamy and had a perfect consistency. The weakest thing was the coffee, literally. I've eaten at the Fox several times now and the breakfast is always delicious. The pancakes are not like any I have had before. They are fluffy and sweet almost like a cake and you only need a little syrup for it to be even more delicious. The bacon is always crispy and salty. I've tried the French toast which is good as well. The only breakfast item that lacks in my opinion is the turkey sausage which has been very dry. Skip that and get the bacon or regular sausage. The owner is great and takes his restaurant seriously and will come to recognize you if you visit 2+ times which is a nice feeling that I haven't experienced anywhere else in Jax. The restaurant is classic movie style diner which of course means it could use some updating but that's part of the charm. Just don't crowd around his front door and you will be fine :). read more

Finally made it to the Fox. I dig local spots like this. A good ol greasy spoon. The food is just ok, so I had to give it a 4 instead of 5. Sorry. It also took a long time for standard grub. But I will give you that the place was slam packed. But still... lol The host dude that comes outside to shuttle people to seats based on party size - super cool. Great vibes. Checks on you occassionally thru the meal. People like that keep patrons like me coming back. The coffee needs help in there though. Ouch. Bacon is on the soggy side. Too much butter on the toast.
