We were visiting from Indiana and decided to stop by the fox after finding them on yelp. Great food, and fast service. The prices are excellent especially in such a hip side of town. Decided to stop in at the Old fox restaurant. Haven't been here in many years. I figured I would give it a second chance since the first time was not very rememberable. I ordered a big waffle with strawberry toppings, and when it came out, the strawberries were heated up and the waffle became nothing but mush. I'm familiar with getting waffles at multiple different restaurants and they ask if you want strawberries or blueberries and they are on top of them but they're not heated up like hot soup. They're just cold our room temperature fruit so when the waitress came and asked me how everything was, I decided to let her know what my opinion was on the waffle as a customer that way it could help other customers in the future, know that their toppings, hot like mush. She already got an attitude for the fact that I was bringing it up to her since she was already in a mood, the first time she came to the table you can tell something was off, so I just let it go, but when I reported my opinion on the waffle, she went back there to her manager. He came out here with his arms crossed, already presenting a hostile attitude, not acustomer service service attitude . He came over here and said I heard there was a problem what was wrong with his arms crossed I told him he looked at me like I was crazy because I said the topping were completely stinging hot and so well that's how we do it and I said OK I don't want nothing free. I don't want nothing replaced. I'm just letting you know my opinion so that you can put on your menu Steamed toppings for waffles that way it doesn't cause a confusion and will prevent more negative reviews. But because of his attitude and the staff members attitude, I decided to go ahead and give them a review instead of just letting it go and giving them a great review and overlooking it. My only advice to anyone that is stopping into to get a quick bite catch up with family or friends or just have a quick lunch or breakfast . The menu would benefit from more options for appetizers. It's a small hole in the wall with an open kitchen so that's quaint however, seating at the bar feels narrow. Server was really sweet and service was so fast! Employees were planning on going out for a drink after work and that warmed my heart to see coworkers enjoying each others company. Their funny banter prevented me from burying myself in my phone. The walls are decorated by cool stickers and the handwashing sink says "EMPLOYEES MUST CARVE 'SLAYER' IN THEIR FOREARM BEFORE RETURNING TO WORK" I thought that was cool. This place is hip. The owner and manager complimented my Charlie Brown tattoos and we had a whole conversation of the origin of Snoopy and the staff Halloween plans and later about talent in tattoo artists and styles. I know that has nothing to do with the eating experience but I was impressed with the willingness to interact with people who will likely return due to the comraderie. When the owner of an establishment is fully involved with customers- that's rare to see. I left my wallet in my car and though I was embarrassed, server was super chill about it and upon returning, the owner ran my credit card for me since she was assisting a guest at the time. I absolutely love this place! The décor reminds me of my childhood. The food is perfect. Every single one of the staff are amazing. And the owners are the nicest people you could ask for. You have to get there very early if you do not want to wait, but the line signifies that the food is worth it. The portions are large and the prices are very reasonable. Great spot for a tasty honest breakfast or lunch . Today I had the Nam burger and it was great, with chorizo and an egg. My wife had and loved the Mediterranean salad with added chicken and bacon. The romaine lettuce was fresh and crispy and she thoroughly enjoyed it. We both had a cup of chili which was good (not amazing but good). The service was great and the staff were working really well together. The place itself has a great home feel and hippie vintage feel and ambiance which works well for the neighborhood. Welp! Sorry to say this Waffle House.... there's a new sheriff in town. Actually, they've been here, it's me that's just now discovering them. LMBO! This restaurant has won my heart and it was only the first visit. From great customer service to deliciously fresh breakfast with so many options of what many would consider be most simply ingredients. The OJ tasted sweet, and freshly squeezed; the eggs was cooked to perfection; the mounds of bacon... (I just need a moment of silence .) And the sausage patty... took me to food coma. Oh and the cinnamon raisin bread needs no introduction. #JezuzTakeTheWheel I was sure of what I wanted to try during this visit, the broad selection of omelets as mouthwatering but, I wanted to taste each of my breakfast foods separately and thought about how hunger I could possible have been. Final results: I ordered the Super Fox which comes with 4 eggs; 4 pieces of bacon, a sausage patty, and your choice of grits, breakfast hash, or fruit, and a biscuit or toast. Our waitress was super cool. She sat us in the "VIP" area. LOL! It wasn't VIP but, just by her saying it was made us feel super special. I love the vintage vibes of this restaurant. Excellent food & service! We had 6 people in our party and enjoyed eggs, bacon, sausage, pork chops, pancakes, biscuits, grits, fruit, coffee and OJ! It got quiet when we received our food so you know it was goooood! The owner was very welcoming and came by to say hello! The best part was being their for the daily visit from one of their doggie friends who gets a piece of bacon when they past by the restaurant on her walk with her owner....so cool! There's only street parking but that won't stop us...We will definitely return! read more

I finally made it to the FOX after hearing about it for so many years. Simple little diner with a long counter seating and about 10 booths - I didn't count, just an estimate. It was exactly as I'd imagined as a throw back to when times were simpler and technology didn't run our lives. Ordered the 2 egg breakfast which includes your choice of meat (4 slices of bacon for me), grits or fruit, and bread or biscuit. Service was fast and friendly and the kitchen was even faster. Took less than 5 minutes after I ordered but of course all that had to be prepared was the eggs which were perfectly cooked. 4 pieces of bacon is nice since it's thin and I know this is a personal preference but I like thick bacon. Nonetheless, it was a good breakfast overall. The grits were good and that had to be the fluffiest biscuit I've eaten in a long time! No complaints from this guy. read more

The biscuits and gravy remind me of Saturday mornings with my grandma and grandpa in rural Arkansas. So simple yet so good. Same with the waffles. An old school diner with eclectic flare, quirky employees and a righteous menu filled with breakfast staples all the way to the kitchen sink. Their shoestring fries are everything and then some. Cut thin, yet substantial enough to play ball with the other big names on the plate. Next time I might ask for a basket, or rather a bucket to entertain my salty senses. The Chicken Parm sandwich is very good, but not what I expected. Am I letting my Italian upbringing block my senses of taking this sandwich for what it is? Possibly. I can admit it. Basically, the chicken is fried and used for all other dishes that come with fried chicken. So, it's fried chicken topped with marinara, cheese, and pressed between a crisp roll. Overall, it's a simple, well-crafted sandwich, but I feel like it could be elevated even more. The portion size will knock you back in your chair though! I do love how this place doesn't conform to any other establishment. With many finer dining options in the area, The Fox fills the void of low-key, no fuss vibe in the Avondale scene. I have been coming here for months...I have enjoyed almost every meal I have ever had here. I will continue to come moreso because of the enjoyable atmosphere and the STAFF are great. The perfectly sometimes snarky owner/manager, the sometimes interactive and entertaining cooks, the attentive servers leaving you rarely ever having to ask twice for anything! This is a hidden gem! It's small and definitely during peak times (the weekends) you WILL have to wait but you should! You can order anything on the menu anytime. So like a year ago, this was my partner and my top breakfast place! The staff was amazing and still is!! I think this one guy is the owner, he's the loudest in a good way, fun nice guy! Why 3 stars, the food. It has been declining in taste for the last few months I went. It started with like runny eggs, burnt whatever,etc I was like ok maybe it was just this one day? This is a true hole in the wall, a handful of seats inside, with an option to side outside. We were lucky enough to get a booth with little to no wait. Very fast paced, but not to where you felt rushed. Decor is awesome each time I looked on the walls I found something different. Our waitress was friendly, upbeat and sarcastically funny. She took our drinks and and returned with them almost instantly. (They were slammed) I ordered the steak omelet and was not disappointed. There really was more steak than I anticipated, got a pancake on the side and it was nice and fluffy. A friend ordered hash and over easy eggs. I was a party of one and was told that I could only be sat at the bar, as I waited two other people that were a party of one arrived and were told the same. As we waited ,two parties of two were immediately taken to tables. Seems table revenue per turn is priority over customer service and experience. Mind you, a party of one usually only takes 25 minutes to be serviced and cleared. Horrible experience. Will not patronize an establishment that discriminates service based on party size being too small or deemed too low revenue for table service. read more

Went to The Fox this morning for breakfast. Had about a 10 minutes wait which was cool on a Saturday morning. The service was the best I've experience in a while. We ordered pancakes and a patty melt with fries. Good pancakes. I had to add salt & pepper to the patty melt. Finally, I got up early enough to have breakfast here this morning with my sister. I have walked by Fox's four dozen times over the years and they have always been closed as they shut their doors @ 2:30pm. So TODAY was my FIRST TIME! :) We had no wait and sat at a great booth with a wonderful server named Rob who was accommodating and gracious. They also have bar seating where you can sit if you come in alone or prefer sitting up high. We started with two coffees and shortly after, we were ready to order. I ordered the waffle breakfast (eggs, bacon, waffle, potatoes) & my sister ordered the corn beef hash breakfast with a side of grits. The food was fresh, make to order and served quickly. In addition, Rob brought out a nice little side of their horseradish sauce just because he overheard my sister say that she liked horseradish. Talk about on point service! And that horseradish sauce.....try dipping your home fries in that. YUM. Now I'm usually picky with my coffee and the type they serve here is a regular "diner" coffee which usually has no depth. However, the rest of our food and experience was exceptional so I won't bitch about a cup of coffee that was otherwise hot & constantly refilled. :) Overall, Fox's Restaurant is a great local diner humorously decorated with a hip feel that provides a comfortable space to have a nice meal with your sister. Is there a better breakfast in Jax? I struggle to find one and there are some good ones like the original Metro Diner and the incredible Maple Street Biscuit Company. Still, the funky Fox Restaurant takes the cake. Breakfast here on the weekend can be a wait but trust me--it's worth it. Omelets here rock, biscuits and cheese grits do as well. The pancakes are really as good as it gets. It's kind of ridiculous just how well this place gets the simple things right. It is truly a place where eggs and hash are slung as if the entire staff are NYC short-order vets. Serving sizes are mammoth, service is speedy and the food is always hot. Come on--what more can you ask for at breakfast? Lunch? Forget about it. The sandwiches are huge, well-crafted and served without the kind of fuss that distracts from what you need: a reason to nap and pretend to work in the afternoon. The onion rings are my favorite. If you want no-frills, kick-butt diner food this is really Jacksonville's best option and it never disappoints. read more

This is one of my places on my "Monday Breakfast" list. I love eating breakfast at the counter. You get to talk to the employees behind the counter & also get a chance to watch the chef do her think on the grill. Me, also being a cook, love watching good cooks in action. The food always come out quick and cooked perfectly. I have been trying to taste a little bit of everything on their menu. The waffles, pancakes & the home fries have been my favorite so far. I love that they keep the food simple and good, sometimes the way breakfast should be. The decor is another favorite of mine too. They have memorabilia and figurines dating back to my childhood. It may be hidden away in the lovely area of Avondale. But there are big things happening inside.
