I ordered a small vanilla cone, dipped in chocolate, which came out to about $4. The service was quick, and the cone was a good size for a "small." The vanilla soft serve was decent, but the texture was a bit icy, and it lacked the rich creaminess that I've had with other soft serves I prefer. The vanilla flavor also tasted a little artificial. The chocolate dip was nice, but it didn't have a very strong chocolate flavor and it cost an extra $1 which seems steep for a dip. It was a nice treat, but it doesn't quite measure up to the soft-serve I can get at the local dairy. It's an okay spot if you're nearby and in the mood for a classic fast-food style cone, but if you're looking for good quality, you might want to look elsewhere. read more

Long time local institution that is family run. Super nice people and oh...the food is always well prepared. Love the menu variety but we all know 99% of the time we go with our favorites! Located on a corner not too far from downtown, there is good parking in their lot and a little on one side street. oreo and reece's twisters i heard about this place when i was younger and was amazed there still was one up and running so had to check it out. the place was dead inside with only one other lady in front of me. all the workers seemed busy though constantly doing something and taking out trash. i just ordered 2 twisters and they came out quick. unfortunately the base of the twisters are the same and they just added the oreos or reeces throughout. i was so disappointed that i actually went to mcdonald's to get a mcflurry. i do not recommend the twisters here. maybe the food keeps the business alive? read more

Never heard of this place till I saw it on Yelp (thank god for Yelp) and decided to try it. The had a good selection of burgers but their frozen treats menu was much more extensive! Since it was my first time, I decided to try their Old-Fashioned Burger (meal portion) and their Vanilla Ice Cream Cone. My bf tried their Orange Crush Freeze. Old-Fashioned Burger: for a fast food burger, it was pretty good. The meat patty was a good size, they put lots of veggies there, and the buns were toasted. Definitely better than McD, but of course I couldn't compare it with Habit or Super Duper. They used their special sauce on the burger, which almost had a color of thousand island but taste wise was less tangy. I liked it. It was $5 and 700 calories. Fries: since their burger meal came with fries, I got to try them too. Their fries were thick cut! I loved chubby fries. They came to us piping hot. So fresh. I loved how the exterior of each fry was super crispy and the inside was soft. Vanilla Ice Cream Cone: yum, I could tell they specialized in frozen treats more than in savory items. I appreciated that the vanilla ice cream wasn't bleached so it had this natural light cream, slightly orange color. It was creamy and delicious. It was $2 and 220 calories. I wanted to try the chocolate dip but I didn't want an extra 200 calories. Maybe next time. Orange Crush Freeze: this drink was basically a blended drink of their vanilla ice cream and orange crush. Delicious, of course. $4 and 200 calories. This fast food had its own parking lot, so it was easy to get parking. The service was wonderful and friendly, and the store was neat and clean. There are plenty of options, you can customize with add ins and go as crazy or vanilla as you want, and the service is excellent. They offer small, medium, and large cones. There are never long lines or inflated prices. It's family owned and they're always welcoming and friendly. Tip: don't trust the hours posted on Yelp/online. My kindergartener won two gift certificates from Fosters Freeze this year - one for acing her school readathon this year, the other for reading a certain number of books during Livermore library's summer reading program. So there we were - me, my kindergartener and my three year-old - the only customers at Fosters Freeze on a hot July afternoon. My daughter proudly showed both her gift certificates to the lady manning the cashiers counter - "I won these for reading. I want one ice cream for me, and one for my baby sister." "These are free?" she said sourly. "You can get the smallest cone of the vanilla or chocolate only." My six-year old: "One each please." Crestfallen, in a small voice. Without another word, let alone a smile or any semblance of warmth, the woman handed my girls the cones. We went to a window table and the kids happily finished them. This could have been such a great experience, and was indeed a missed opportunity for Fosters Freeze. They could so easily have built upon their support of the various reading programs around town - a little kudos to my daughter for her achievements would have won them my loyalty. I really HATE giving small, local, family owned places a bad review BUT...I've been here many times in the last 5 years and more times than not, something odd happens. Tonight: Me: One chocolate cone, one vanilla shake. (Woman brings me small cup with a dab of chocolate ice cream) Me: Is that my chocolate cone? Woman: It's yours. I haven't been to the 1st Street Foster Freeze in over 8 years. Just bypassed it on the way to somewhere else. Thankfully, the Vine Movie Theater is a block away and we decided to stop for a milkshake after the afternoon matinae. Upon entering what we thought was a closed fast food restaurant, we were amazed at the cleanliness of the restaurant. It sparkled! The Vanilla Malt was just as good as when I was in High School and the simple cheese burger hit the spot just perfectly. My boyfriend would past by this place sometimes when he works and he would always tell me that there is a poster that they had on their window that shows a pink bunned burger. He never stopped by before since he never had the time, but since he was on vacation, we decided to try it out since we were in the area. We ordered what was on the poster, and it turns out that it wasn't a pink bunned burger :/ we figured that it was probably just a faded poster due to the sun (eventhough the rest of the poster didn't look faded; only the hamburger buns which was odd). Anyways, we gor our order, and the burger was pretty good; the tomatoes were juicy and fresh, and the burgee in general wasn't sloppily made; even the fries were hot and crunchy. $5 for a burger, drink, and fries isn't that bad. Open on Memorial Day, SCORE! (for customers at least). The staff were very friendly. It felt like a nice environment to be in with that factor. It was my first time at any of their locations and I was impressed. My strawberry shake has real strawberry pieces in it. Although being someone who is allergic to fruit: I actually hate the taste and smell of fresh strawberries.. I love the shakes (which really don't count) from McDonalds and In'N'Out. I got two hot dogs with relish, pickles, and onions with ketchup. I loved how their buns were crunchy and not soft although my boyfriend wasn't a fan. The fries were lovely as well: wide with waves, but not mushy. - The only downside that wasn't due to the staff was four obnoxious local high school girls this late afternoon. They were over-the-top loud that it was uncomfortable for everyone. And it wasn't just because the were loud, but they were beyond cruel. They were bashing girls from their high school: one by one for over an hour. I pity their poor souls. They are such an embarrassment. Girls from Livermore: be weary of who your 'friends' are. Fosters is my favorite place to get frozen treats, and out of all my visits I've never had a bad time! The food is great and they host some of my favorite pick-me-ups (particularly the ham & cheese texas toast is the usual order for my partner and I), but what really does it for me is the soft serve icecream. It's hard to get places that provide quality soft serve these days! One of my favorite things to do is order one of the big BIG cups of soft serve, enjoy some, and then store it in my freezer where I get to revisit its tasty bounty for like three days. It keeps well! The owner, Cuc Nguyen, is so warm and friendly, and always asks how we are doing. My grandson usually gets a swirl cone, and an order of fries, and maybe sometimes a chocolate milkshake. I used to come here and get whatever their version of the "Blizzard" is -- chocolate ice cream with Reese's for a very decadent treat (I was still a teenager then -- didn't get concerned about the calories). We stopped here last night to pick up some burgers (fish for me) to go. I'm not a giant fan of tip jars, but I will say this to the last reviewer: you tip, and they give you extra fries with a wink. Seriously, the woman did this to my boyfriend because he tipped them. As for the food. The fries are pretty delish. Still nice and hot after driving for 10 minutes before eating. My fish burger/sandwich was ehh. I probably wouldn't order it again, even if I did come here. I'd just bulk up on fries and ice cream. We shared a banana milkshake because I had one that was to die for at the Foster's Freeze up in Clear Lake. This was was pretty damn good too. My sweetie and I have been frequenting this establishment since we were teens (and that's a long time, since we're in our middle 60s). We always get the Orange Freeze. Yummy. Thinking of it makes me want one now. We, also, order a steak sandwich or a burger, and fries. We need just one order of fries because it has so many fries in it. Did the corn-dogs taste good at the time? Absolutely! However, I was also intoxicated at the time so that might have added "tasty" flavor of the corn-dog. The first thing that bugs me about this location is the fact that I walked up to their little to go window to find the kid working there, sitting in a chair near the inside of the window, on his phone, and he looked up at me and then looked back down at his phone. We went inside to order instead. The same kid made an irritated sigh as he sat up so he could take our order. As you can imagine his tone of voice matched his attitude, but he did take our order properly: two corn-dogs. Minutes later our corn-dogs were ready. They were hot, which was good. I took a bite then for some reason looked down at my dog to find grey meat surrounded by the pinkish meat of the hot dog. It kind of bugged me at the time, but again; intoxicated, so I didn't care. This place would need a major overhaul for me to even consider stepping foot in here again. First of all get rid of that lazy ass kid, the rest of the employees get some kind of personality, and upgrade the standards on your food. read more

One day I filled and added 1 cup with root beer to finish my ice cream and got yelled at by the condescending man. Seemed petty to me after all the tips I've left for a simple float. Did you know depending on the distributor, the soda fountain is the highest profit margin item in the fast food industry! That's why they allow you free refills. So this 4 star review is based on a large vanilla malt milkshake. I am a malt enthusiast. I try them where ever I can from the chain restaurants to the little hole in the whole ice cream parlors. I have been malting since 1998 and have never looked back. That being said there soft serve ice cream with the generic malt powder is nothing but delicious. For a whopping $5.95 you get a big mama-jamma. There was definitely enough malt powder and the ratios were spot on. So I say to the lady behind the counter.
