Located downtown on 2nd street is Loard's ice cream! This is a true throwback! The decor and selections are the exact same when I was a kid. Many candy options, as well. I loved walking into this store. The decor felt nostalgic and warm, the staff was friendly and helpful, the ice cream was cold and sweet. Nothing like an ice cream cone in a cold night. I do not think I have been to a Loard's before but I have had Loard's ice cream elsewhere. This was a cool find while in Livermore. I got myself an ube and that was delicious. During one of our neighborhood walks after dinner, we've been passing by this place and decided to give this place a try and the owner/employees are so friendly and nice! There seems to be a lot of regulars. They have a large variety of ice cream flavors, sundaes and even boba! The ambiance is really cute and like a throwback to the old-timey ice cream parlors. Ice cream was SUPER good. They microwaved and warmed up the brownie before placing the ice cream on top and warmed caramel drizzle as well! Will definitely be going back for some more. I just walked in with my daughter. The sales clerk, barely smiled, kept getting our order wrong, did not ask if it was for here or to go and presume to put the ice cream in a paper/plastic cup and then seem to walk back to the back to ask somebody something. She then came back and asked me if it were for here and if so, would I like it in Glass? Speaking broken English did not help. She then proceeded to somehow make the previously prepared chocolate ice cream in the plastic/paper cup go somewhere before she asked me for my order. She seemed to confuse my order from my daughter's order and then became defensive when I was trying to separate the orders to make sure she got them correct. Ultimately the price would have been over $20 which, for one scoop of ice cream with hot fudge on the side, and another scoop of ice cream with hot fudge on the side and a topping of M&M's I thought was ridiculous. The experience was terrible and she still didn't get the order right so we just walked out. For that price we will just buy higher quality ice cream at home with our own hot fudge, thank you. I will never come in here again. If we're going to spend money like this, it better be a fantastic experience. read more

Yum!!! The Livermore Loard's location has been around for a while now and we love visiting when we're in a "sundae mood". The ice cream parlor is decorated cute and feels like you're transported into an old school dinner. The service is always awesome, and the ladies who run the shop are always kind. Stopped by here on a 100+ degree day, first day of October! Their ice cream is so good. Two of us got the pumpkin and it was so creamy and tasted like pumpkin, my partners daughter said it tasted just like fall. We also had the caramel cashew that was really good too. The inside area is very pleasant and comfortable ' The black Cherry ice cream was creamy and tasty. The chunks of black Cherry add extra flavor to it. There were two Loards ice cream places in Livermore l, about two blocks apart, for years. Fortunately, the inferior one closed. This one has a huge variety of flavors, including black walnut, my favorite. Banana is usually on hand for The Wife, and Blondie can get a small sundae. Second time went back for a quart of Butterbrickle to go. Had planned to enjoy it at home, but was disappointed in my experience. Loard's is a family classic in the bay. I have always gone to the one in Castro Valley so when I saw this one we stopped by with my sons. Same great ice cream but service was major lacking. No hi or hello super straight face guy asking what flavor and thats about it. The girl working with him looked super nervous and tense. Made for a strange vibe. There was no one there but us then mid order another family came in. But the guy was super concerned about charging us and he kept asking her what she served us. We sat and ate there and noticed a sign that said " No cones sitting at tables after 7:30pm" WTH? Thats so weird its an icecream place why wouldn't you be able to sit?? Anyone that grew up in the Bay Area is probably familiar with this chain though there are only a few locations left now. This one is our favorite location since it's in downtown Livermore so it's great to drop in for dessert after dining downtown. All time favorite flavor is mango though their pistachio and mint chocolate chip are both tied at second. The decor is cute old school ice cream shop and so we love to sit in. There are no vegan or dairy-free options. There are no brownies, even though they specialize in sundaes. These are serious oversights. I ordered a thin mint sundae thinking of thin mint cookies (advertised as "Loard's special thin mints"). Instead I got a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream (good!) with hot fudge (good!) and lots of chopped-up Andes after-dinner mints with some whipped cream and a cherry. I do not like after-dinner mints. This experience has taught me that some people also call the candies "thin mints" like the cookie. I have also learned it is safer to stick with hot fudge brownie sundaes, which Loard's doesn't have and can't produce. Also, these mint candies are still kind of gross. read more

Growing up in the East Bay, Loard's was a rite of passage. They were small old school Ice Cream Parlors with a candy counter/display, and when you walked into one as a child, the smell of many things sweet and creamy was just intoxicating. Birthdays = Loard's. Good Grades = Loard's. Hot days of summer vacation = Loard's. It was woven into our suburban ways. There used to be 3 in the area where I grew up. Now they're all gone. San Leandro and Castro Valley I think are still hanging on. Livermore has 2, within about 4 blocks of each other. Huh??!! But demographically I think I understand. Livermore is hawt AF. So I think they're cashing in on that aspect. But this one on 2nd St. is much better than the one on 1st St. just down the way (which btw has more foot traffic). This one on 2nd St. I think is more for the citizens in the know. It looks more like what I remember Loard's looking like back in the day with the bright pink vinyl booth seating. And the candy counter is very much alive in this one as well, though I doubt anything is made in house anymore. But all their ice cream is still made in their central factory in San Leandro. And according to them, the recipes hasn't changed in decades. Which means zero to little preservatives and a higher milk fat content, which makes it more rich and creamy. The way ice cream was intended to be. The flavors are all over the place. I may have only tried maybe a half dozen. They're not doing the modern foodie flavors like strawberries with balsamic or cardamom banana. But over the years they have included some tropical flavors, as I'm sure they wanted to tap in on the Asian market, as it eventually grew here in the Bay Area. Green Tea and Ube are now available, and definitely don't remember seeing those growing up. Outside of just getting a scoop or two on a cone, the other common thing I get here is the Jr. Sundae. I tend to lean towards the strawberry topping, as I've always preferred my desserts to be more fruit oriented than chocolate or caramel. But the classic chopped toasted almonds, canned whipped cream and maraschino cherry are just the quintessential toppings to any of their flavors for a classic American Sundae. They also have a ton of designed classic creations like a Black and White, a Fudge-Ana Sundae and of course a monster banana split. I wasn't too adventurous as a kid when it came to sweets, as I didn't have an unlimited sweet tooth. So I haven't tried many of their offerings. But in what I have tried, it brings me to my roots. We lived in Livermore for several years without visiting Loard's, which was a local institution. This evening, we were in the area and decided to stop by instead of going to our old favorite, Baskin Robbins. Loard's has two locations downtown... we went to the one on 2nd and M, mainly because it is on the TriValley Ice Cream Trail this summer. The place looked a bit dated, but was clean - we were a bit surprised there was no one inside, since warm Saturday evenings in July are perfect for ice cream. The kids asked for samples... after trying bubblegum and not liking it, they asked for another, but were rudely told "no more samples, only one sample per person." Really?! Never heard that before, and there weren't any signs saying this. The girls were clearly disappointed, but didn't cause a fuss. They each picked a flavor and sat down to eat - our 8-year old selected black raspberry marble, our 5-year old picked chocolate, one of the few flavors she knows. The ice creams were good, but the girls weren't having fun, which kind of defeats the purpose of going out for ice cream. They also kept an eye on the clock, because they saw a sign which said "no cones on tables after 7:30 pm" which worried them even though their ice creams were in cups! While our older daughter quickly polished off her ice cream, our younger one picked at hers... clearly she was not enjoying it, probably because she didn't get to try a few samples and choose something she really wanted. She left most of it uneaten. As we crossed the street back to our car, I glanced back at Loard's, certain we'd never return. With so many other ice cream parlors to try, why would we, after our rude service experience? Which is a shame, because the ice cream is good! read more

I got horchata ice cream which was actually amazing. The store doesn't allow for sampling flavors so I just took a risk which turned out in my favor, but if you are unsure of what flavor to get you should be at least allowed one sample to determine which flavor you would like to get I feel that it is a part of the experience of going to an ice cream parlor. read more

For starters, our 11-dollar sundae was a TERRIBLY tiny serving, and it was served in a small dinky plastic cup. After we walked in, an old couple came in for a date and were immediately told they had to leave within 10 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous. There was no greeting, no hello, no thank you. You would think an establishment that charges 11 dollars for a prison-sized serving of ice cream would at least have a warm environment. Not to mention there are no free samples, and you can't even see the ice cream behind the glass! Absolutely don't recommend, save your money and go get a 3 dollar sundae from McDonald's. :) read more

The following story is one rife with grief, and if you choose not to read it, I completely understand. I have no choice but to tell this tale, for the one whom it concerns holds my heart in her loving hands. The year was 2002. My lovely girlfriend was gifted a coupon equivalent to $5, redeemable at any Loard's location. She is and always has been a very patient woman, even at the age of seven, and tucked the coupon away in her wallet to save for one of those difficult days when nothing but ice cream can salvage its tattered remains (these days typically tend to be Tuesdays, but that isn't relevant to this rant). It is pertinent to note that written on the coupon was the following claim: "This coupon will never expire." My girlfriend is trusting, always looking for the best in people, and she took the coupon at its word. A year passed. Then another. Then another. Then another eleven. It was now 2016. My girlfriend was having a bad day. The time had come to redeem her Loard's coupon. She drove to Livermore, eagerly anticipating a high-quality dairy product from a trusted franchise. She removed the coupon from her wallet - the coupon she had saved for fourteen years - and handed it to the cashier. It was rejected. She pleaded her case, pointing to the promise that now revealed itself as empty, a gaggle of meaningless words meant to deceive children into false hope. The love of my life received no ice cream. My girlfriend, growing frantic now, tried to redeem the coupon at the other Livermore location. Again, she was callously turned down. She was crushed, and dragged her discouraged carcass out of the shop. As she left, a single tear rolled down her cheek, hidden beneath the raindrops that fell from the sky. She has never returned to Loard's Ice Cream, and will never visit again. What is an ice cream shop but its word? Who are we to turn to if we cannot trust our purveyors of dairy?
