Ordered a custom cake for a birthday and it tasted amazing! Customization for design was pricey for what i requested. (+$25 on top of regular cake price of $42 for an 8 inch round). Custom: chocolate marble cake with: strawberries, peaches, and custard (custard is an additional $4 btw). I had requested for a custom design to resemble a golf course. Photo added is what they had done for me - which is how i wanted it - without any cake toppers. Cake toppers shown were NOT provided by fortune bakery to be clear. I got them on Amazon. Fortune Bakery is our go-to spot for all cakes, all occasions. They are a family-owned business that has been providing the most delicious cakes for many people. We especially love the vanilla cake with strawberry filling and the chocolate chip cake with chocolate mousse filling. The ingredients are always so fresh, and the baker helps us with designing for kids parties, and also just simple, beautiful designs with fruit. We have a couple of friends who now travel to get cakes from Fortune Bakery from El Monte, Pasadena, and Whittier because they love the cakes we get for our events. The stars are for the friendly service only, but the taste and design wouldn't worth the cost of the price. It's not freshly made cream and the cake is way too sweet, it's like getting a costco cake, but 4th times of the price. I won't be back for sure. But want you know what to expect, get a cake from Costco, save your money. Or find a bakery that made sponge cake and fresh cream, that will worth the money $$$. read more

This is a repost of my previous review of Fortune Bakery. My old account could not be updated. But this is one of my favorite bakeries. Always fresh baked items, friendly service, and reasonably priced. I appreciate that if I can call in early enough, Fortune Bakery is able to make my cake the very same day! I stop by every few months to pick up a small cake to enjoy with the family for the weekend. Below is my previous review and I appreciate nothing has changed years later :0) So I started about 2 months ago in search of a strawberry cake that wasn't a white sponge cake with strawberries with sliced almonds on the side (yes, the Asian version) that I have been a fan of for many years. Next step, do some searching for bakeries within the neighborhood and there it was....."Fortune Bakery." People seemed to like their chocolate cake with different fruit fillings, so I thought I would give them a try...5 times in the last 2 months and I'm hooked! The store is small with many figurines to add to your cake decoration. There is another display case that has various sugar-free treats (cookies, brownies, etc...), in addition to the real-deal stuff including different types of breads (banana nut, marble, etc...) in regular or mini sizes. So, my latest kick is ordering a chocolate cake with half banana filling (chunks of bananas and creme) and the other half filled with strawberries...topped off with chocolate frosting! No matter which fruit filled side you get, you will find it delicious! They also offer a white cake with with strawberries (haven't tried) and an upside down cake (haven't tried either). The customer service is great! I called mid-morning for a cake for an afternoon pick-up...walked right in after 4pm and there it was!!!! That to me was pretty impressive, they typically ask that you give them a one day notice. I felt bad but was desperate to pick up my current favorite cake and was excited that they were able to help me out. One last thing, the cake texture is the cake-cake (what Americans think of regular cake) and not the sponge-cake that I sometimes buy. read more

I really love this place. I've come before just for a quick cake that you can buy already premade and they always taste good. I don't really like cake but this cake is good because it's not too sweet. I recently placed an order for a two layer naked cake and it came out PERFECT. I did bring disco balls to place on the cake it came out just the way I wanted it. The man who works here is nice and makes the ordering process quick and easy. read more

Had i known about this place before my own parties, i would have totally got all my cakes here!! Simple, beautiful and delicious! The cake and fruits inside were fresh and cake was not overly sweet. But minus one star as the cake was more dry then the Asian chiffon style cakes that i prefer for their moist and spongy texture. Although this texture is perfect with the hispanic tres leches cake as the cream would compliment it well! So definitely coming back to order a cake for my next party but trying the tres leches instead and update my review then! Its also obvious that the simple nake cake is the star of the show. Simple, elegant and totally modifiable to your liking with some decors, flowers, cake toppers!! Now i know! read more

Ordered a cake for my sister's wedding, and the owner is so sweet + nice! He listened attentively to everything we needed, and even showed up to the wedding to personally deliver it (for a fee) and to make sure everything looked fine! So sweet, I came back for my best friends birthday to get a cake, and his cakes are just so cute and taste soooo good. Please come here and pay a reasonable price to support a small business. Love fortune bakery! Their strawberry banana chocolate cake is sooooo fire! They use real cacao powder so it has a beautiful chocolate color compared to other Asian bakeries. I ordered the strawberry vanilla cake (7/10) for my brothers birthday but it wasn't my favorite. Strawberry and everything was extremely fresh though! The service is ALWAYS phenomenal!! And his writing is so cute! It is a small mom and pop shop on the corner of the block and my family and I have been coming here for years! Also, it is extremely affordable (compared to other Asian chain bakeries). read more

When I lived in San Gabriel, this is where I would go to for cakes. The couple who works and I assume own this business have been there for years and they are very kind and hard working. I appreciate their customer service and often would be able to order a cake and get it within a few hours the same day. They also use great ingredients in their cakes and I really like their strawberry cakes with whip cream. I miss not being close enough to frequent here, but some day will return hopefully before the couple who owns it retire. read more

My first time getting a cake here and it doesn't disappoint. I wanted to try something different than all the other bakery I always get. make sure to order a head of time, but if you need last minute cakes they have some on the fridge. I got the tres leches with strawberry 7" cake. It was delicious and everyone loved it. For the design of the cake pictured was $3 more than a regular cake they usually make for birthdays. My only complaint is that their hand writing on the cake is not good. Good thing they were able to scrape it off and I bought the 'happy birthday' sign. read more

Was excited to learn that Fortune Bakery offers sugar-free cake options! Ordered online about a week in advance over the phone. My bf said he had to call a few times to get through to order. The sugar-free cake is vanilla only, but you can choose your fruit (i.e. strawberry, banana, mango, etc.). We went with a small vanilla cake with strawberries ($25), good for ~6 people. We asked what they use instead of sugar, and the gentleman on the phone told us "Splenda." They can write whatever message you need on the cake as well. The cake was delicious! The frosting is actually very light & airy, smooth and creamy. The cake itself was moist and paired really well with the frosting and strawberries. Will be ordering cakes from Fortune Bakery again soon! read more

So happy with how our wedding cake turned out! We had a small intimate backyard ceremony with our immediate family who were all fully vaccinated and tested before gathering. I came into Fortune Bakery earlier in February and ordered the smallest two tier naked cake. You can choose to leave a small deposit to pay the rest at pickup or pay in full. The bakery was clean and safe, ample space for social distancing and mask wearing was observed by employees and customers. Decorating with fresh flowers is complimentary, I just brought the flowers I wanted to use on the cake early in the morning of the day of pick up. I chose a chocolate top tier and red velvet second tier. It was so pretty to have the colors of the cake peek out from the frosting and the cake was actually really good as well! Usually, I expect these types of cakes to just like nice and not taste too memorable, but that was not the case - during our hectic wedding day, having not eaten much the whole day - our wedding cake was actually extremely pleasant to enjoy and it was incredibly moist and not too sweet. We froze a slice and am excited to see how it turns out - one year later! read more

After so many recommendations from SGV Eats, I had to get my next cake here and it did not disappoint. My mother in law turned 74 today and loves light cakes with tons of fruit. I got a white cake with strawberries and mangoes and the first cut was like cracking open a mango strawberry piñata. I got an 8in round and it was super tall. The layer of strawberries and mangoes was as thick as a layer of cake. They use a very light and fluffy frosting, which was perfect for my in law's palettes. It was cool whip, but much silkier. The strawberries and mangoes were fresh and sweet. $32 total I called one day in advance, but they keep some on hand if you need a last minute cake. They store also has a ton of different cake toppers like Disney characters, My little pony, etc if you want a certain theme. Definitely recommend! read more

We've been customers for many years, and their light, moist, not-overly-sweet cakes have been part of our birthday, anniversary and graduation celebrations. In fact, their chocolate banana cake is requested by my husband every year for his birthday! The owner/baker greets us with kindness always, and has been very accommodating on more than one occasion. The fruits within the cakes are always of high quality, and our family and friends say they can taste the freshness in the ingredients. All their cakes are reasonably priced, not too sugary, light and delicious! They get your cake done fast! This is my go to spot and for our next party we had called about three days in advance and they were able to prepare a naked cake for about 40 people. Also the owners here are so nice and sweet! I love supporting hard-working locals. This has been my go to spot and I'm so surprised I haven't written a review for Fortune bakery yet. I highly recommend Fortune bakery as I have been coming here for the past few years and every time I try new flavors it does not disappoint. You cannot go wrong with any of the flavors! My favorites are the strawberry and cream and the banana chocolate. Give them a try :) read more

I called and asked about sugar free cakes. They have to be order with enough time and I needed it last minute. They made a small one for 6/8 ppl and had it ready in 1 hr for me. Cake was delicious and so cute. My dad was very happy to have sugar free cake for his birthday. Highly recommend this place. I don't live near by but I would do the drive again. read more

Got their strawberry cream cake for a Christmas Eve dinner. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it. The cake is on the moist side so even though this is an Asian bakery, it's a touch more dense than a typical Asian cake. Both styles are great, so this is more of a heads up in case you have a preference for one or the other. The staff is pretty friendly, and this is definitely a place with small business feel. And relative to what other popular cakes in the area cost, the price isn't bad at all ($38 for a 7-inch). read more

I love Eastern bakeries more so than western because of the level of sweetness. This place had a few things going for them that surpassed my expectations. 1) support local small businesses! Despite being a small corner bakery, locals know this place is good at what they do 2) perfect sweetness level. If your palette is used to heavy sugar, this might not be it because the kennel of sweetness with the banana and cream was just enough to hit the spot, but not so much you need to wash it down with black coffee 3) pricing. This place knows what they're doing and does it well at an affordable price. Highly encourage this place and will return for other cakes in the future. read more

Needed a birthday cake for my daughter's birthday. Porto's was my normal go to for custom cakes but they were no longer taking orders for the rest of the year. Found this place on yelp and was pleasantly surprised. Joe was reasonably priced (2 tier cake with 2 different flavors) was less than $200. He was able to create exactly what I wanted off of a picture I provided. Cake was fresh and moist. Frosting was light and delicious. Joe was so flexible with the time too. They open at 10am but I needed the cake by 9 so he was able to accommodate. Would definitely go here over Porto's from now on. A true hidden gem! read more

I am ashamed to say this was my first time going to this bakery since it is near my house. My sister bought her cake here so I decided to check it out. On a Thursday afternoon in late September, I decided to buy a Chinese strawberry cake for hubby. The owner is really nice and helpful so I bought a last minute cake. He helped me write "Happy birthday " on the cake. He also had extra chocolate cakes and strawberry cakes, cookies, muffins, and buns. The cake was affordable at $28 for small size. My husband really liked the cake since it was moist and light. It bought memories eating this traditional strawberry cake as a kid. Next time I will definitely come here again. Main impression: the man who helped us (I'm guessing he is the owner?) was SOOO nice & amiable. I appreciated the excellent customer service as well as the yummy cake. I had called the day before for a wedding cake tasting. They give you two free flavors - I picked vanilla custard and strawberry vanilla. Vanilla custard: very creamy and flavorful! Strawberry vanilla: strawberries weren't that sweet but the overall combination of cake, frosting, and strawberries tasted good! Upon the first bite, the vanilla custard stands out more but as we kept eating the two cakes, the custard becomes too sweet. Overall, I think we are leaning towards the strawberry vanilla. Based on other reviews, I expected the cake to be a little more moist but not enough to be a deal breaker. read more

They are decent as well. It is the main lure. The cute cakes are "Asian cute", like you would know this is from a Chinese bakery kind of vibe. IMO they are overprice / maybe overrated and I think they only appeal to people who like these kind of cute stuff or maybe kids. otherwise I would pass on these overpriced themed cakes. The service is decent. The store seems clean. On the weekends, there probably would be lines but on weekdays they are less busy. I personally would not choose to wait in long lines for this. There is nothing extraordinary really. I'll come back for the egg tarts if I am in the area and perhaps try their coffee next time. Just as a side note, as of now, this bakery is located next to an abandoned burger joint Which hasn't operated or maintained for years. The portion of the shared parking lot has overgrown vegetation, and sometimes you would see "questionable " characters hanging around the establishment. this Is beyond the bakery's control. The edges were nicely crisped by the baking too. Delicious. Love that they had a stock of cute, pre-decorated cookies available as well (some Sanrio characters, animals, etc.) They also list all the ingredients used in each of the baked goods that they have prepackaged, which is nice. It's also a cafe where you can order drinks, as well as a place you can order cakes custom order or what they have behind the glass already. There's both seating inside and outside.

TGTG is an app that allows businesses to sell their leftover or flawed goods for a discounted price in a bundle of their choice. So you don't know what you get, BUT it reduces food waste (#sustainability) while being easier on your wallet. You pay a price they name and they give you the value they listed. The owner (I presume) handed us a prepackaged brown bag the moment we got there. It wasn't busy at all so the whole transaction was under 5 minutes. It's a mom & pop Asian bakery that's spacious and warm. Our surprise bag contained 7 mini breads: black sesame mochi, red sesame mochi, taro bun with filling, hot dog cheese bread, buo luo bao, ham + cheese bun, and another bread I couldn't quite identify. This is $21 value for $6.99 is what we paid. After heating them up, they tasted almost like fresh so we can't complain. However, I would say these days $3 would get you bigger buns at other similar bakeries, but their fillings were very generous, so it's hard to say. Parking has spots designated to the bakery so look out for the signs.

I think folks tend to go to bakeries earlier in the day for more selection and fresher bread. They have a good mix of classic and interesting new breads like rose bread (not depicted), but a lot of them were sold out. We ate the bread the next day and it still tasted very fresh. My favorite was the matcha bread with yogurt filling. The taro bun had real bits of taro in the center. Wish there was a little more though. All the breads were good in flavor, not too salty and or sweet. They also have some deals when you buy a certain amount of certain items. Shared parking lot since it's situated in a plaza.
