Absolutely love Footnote as I've recently discovered this spot while attending a birthday. Located near Foothills Brewery, but down a side alley, they share a space with a local bookstore. From a full bar, to a cool coffee bar, sweet offerings, and savory biscuits for those early morning visits, Footnote is certainly a hangout spot we will revisit! They don't mind you bringing in food apparently, and couple that with the ability to enjoy some cocktails, wine, beer, or coffee while checking out some books is quite appealing! I have been here for a few events and once for a meeting. The space has always been fine but not the most amazing. I am finally writing a review based on my last experience during an event. I asked which of two drinks would be the best on their menu and the bartender stated one vs the other because the latter would take him "ten minutes to make." Based on the description this is likely a lie and also poor customer service. Even if this was an event, good customer service is expected and this is confirmation that I will not be patronizing Footnote on my own accord. The drink was fine-I made sure to get the drink the bartender preferred to make so as not to get a "bad" drink. read more

Footenote is a really unique space in an already over-crowded Winston-Salem microbrewery and coffee scene, but has a lot of positive attributes that make it stand out. As Krankies has started inexplicably charging for parking and moved towards a less-than-casual quasi-restaurant space, my go to for months has been the Foothills associated Footnote location. I worked at Bookmarks for several months during the Cafés construction, and I'm glad to have consistently frequented the establishment after returning to Winston. The coffee - brewed in House by Joe, who is terrific - was never my personal go-to (personal hangup, not a comment on his talent), but his cold-brew is next level. Footnote also stocks a huge collection of Art of Tea brand hot and cold teas, a brand which I haven't had easy bulk access to since my time in Arizona. They even heat it to suggested specifications and offer choices of loose-leaf pots or individual bags. The space is emptier, but it creates a quiet environment for doing work or reading without being bothered by anyone. If you're more gregarious, all the staff members are approachable and seem to have fun areas of interest - bartender Chris enjoys movies, for example, and Megan usually has a side-water waiting well before I ask - and are more than happy to chat while serving other customers. Transitioning from my tea into a Foothills beer without having to walk across the street is ideal as well While the space's location may seem odd, the parties and events they put on are all well-managed and enjoyable. I have attended a few of these in the larger back rooms, and they are well run and stocked with food/beverages. Even at these peak hours, the front service staff does a great job of paying attention to regular customers. In short, Footnote manages to offer decent bar snacks without sacrificing its coffee house prowess or narrowing down its coffee focus. The team is great with any form of hot/cold/mixed style coffee drink. There's a reason I have to stop in several times a week when preparing future school work. read more

I finally got to check out Footnote today! My son is finally of age to appreciate Bookmarks and I was excited to access the new(ish) coffee shop attached. The lady behind the bar was SUPER nice and friendly as I walked in with an active toddler. My nitro iced coffee was delicious. I walked into the venue to check it out while it was being made and it is just LOVELY. I would love to go to an event in this space!! I loved the vibe and all the decor. This is was my first stop in but certainly not my last. I want to come back and take advantage of the beers on tap and cocktails that I have heard so much about. I mean beer sipping and book browsing.. yes please! This is my 336th review and living in the 336 area code I'm proud Footnote is the review! I have only been once and already I'm in love. Both coffee shop and bar, Footnote is our go-to for a day drink and a game of cards....something about it makes us want to pull up a stool and stay awhile. The staff is friendly and you can order a number of items off Foothills' menu. A downtown favorite! read more

My husband ordered and beer and I ordered a cappuccino because the coffee smelled SO GOOD. We enjoyed checking out all the books in a laid back space. This is much larger than I imagined, comfortable and they have large rooms for events and parties. The drinks were really good, serve Foothills beers on tap. They do have a small menu of snacks but I didn't try any. Small bakery area and coffees, didn't try those. It's connected to a bookstore, so kind of a neat place to hang out. read more

They are connected to bookmarks bookstore. They offer a lot here, all in a cool inviting atmosphere. They host private events, have a small food menu, and also have full bar service... Plus 10 beers on tap from Foothills brewery, with something for everybody. Samples, flights, pints, even half pours all readily available. Fast friendly service gets you what you need with a smile. Full bar and plenty of choices with their own special recipe's for mixed drinks. Don't miss out on the iced coffee and deserts while here. Cookies are awesome, so are the cinnamon buns! We had a wedding event at Footnote on December 1, 2018. As the mother of the bride I so wanted everything to be perfect, and it was. This venue was used for the reception. Although the decor was our responsibility, everything else was taken care of. Jennie Hess personally took care of ensuring every detail was covered and each guest was made to feel like they were important. Chef Shane Moore along with Chef Louie, made certain that the food was tastefully prepared. We could feel the care in their preparation. Although I cannot recall the names of the bartenders, they ensured that everyone was greeted with a smile and no glass was empty. The Waite staff was amazing and at no time were we left with dirty plates in front of us. If you are looking for a venue with a industrial vibe and attention to detail, this is the place for you. read more

Have you ever come across a coffee shop in a new city that made you want to relocate? The gracious staff, delightful warm beverages and desserts, and welcoming atmosphere of Footnote made me want to do just that following a Saturday visit in Winston-Salem. Favorite new coffee spot in town! Great friendly staff, delicious coffee, excellent food at reasonable prices. Also, a full bar and events space. They are very supportive of the arts here, always hosting different visual artists works on the walls, yoga with music and salsa classes hosted here, plus live music and markets in the breezeway. If all this wasn't enough, it's also attached to Bookmarks bookstore where you can bring your coffee and delicious pastries from Footnote. My husband and I had our wedding reception at Footnote Cocktails & Coffee in May of 2019.... IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. We we're planning our own wedding and the level of stress we were hitting had reached an all-time high. Jennie, the events coordinator, put us at ease after expressing to her our schedule and budgetary constraints. Jennie not only worked with us in what we could afford at Footnote but she helped us brainstorm plans outside of the reception, all in hopes to alleviate any headaches we were having. The venue is gorgeous and photographs insanely well. Shane, the head chef, absolutely crushed the dinner. Nearly every single one of our guests HAD to comment on how delicious the food was. Chris Fitz was our bartender, and he really made a lasting impression. Cool, calm, collected, and he constantly checked up on my husband and I to make sure we stayed "hydrated" ;) Since we work and currently live in NYC, we had many guests fly down from the Apple. Every single guest, no matter their expectation, left Footnote with amazing craft beer & food in their bellies, but most importantly a huge smile on their face. We felt at home while we were at Footnote; so much that a huge uncomfortable wedding dress couldn't keep me from having a blast. I truly urge those interested in planning an event, or simply wanting a drink, to visit Footnote (and Foothills if you haven't)! I could keep writing about the spectacular staff, delicious food, beautifully crafted drinks, and classic/rustic/stunning ambiance, but I may be hitting a character-maximum very soon so I'll leave it at that. The venue is beautiful, the location is awesome, the problem is the employees. You have to choices rude or aloof. The bartender, a small girl with multiple tattoos, is absolutely awful, short tempered, snippy, borderline unapproachable. The alternative were her two male co-workers who seem to be focused on everything but customers, iPads, yes, phones, yes, the pretty girl at the end of the bar, yes, my glass of wine, not so much. Basically you get two choices get ignored and wait or get yelled at but get your drink a lil quicker. The unfortunate choice is yours. My advice just avoid the headache and goto the Foothills restaurant next door. read more

I almost hate to do this review b/c I am reluctant to share what I consider to be a comfortable retreat for scholars and risk having it over populated by a bunch of posers. Beer, coffee, great service, and great vibe......for s.o. like me who just needs to take a deep dive into a technical book this place is the equivalent of a Rathskeller for those who desire a multi level aesthetic experience to enhance their dive. On August 10, 2019 we held our wedding at Footnote, using the Jade Room for our ceremony and the large main area for our reception. It was unique intimate and absolutely stunning. one of my favorite places to study in downtown Winston Salem. spacious, many many tables and chairs. one thing though is that this cafe constantly rents out its space fo events so it is hard to predict which days there will be lots of noise. But really good coffee and tea! nice barista, pretty reasonable prices for a local coffee shop. it is located right next to a bookstore so it is just a fun shop to visit at least once. read more

The place is decent enough. But our $5 cup of Café Mocha wasn't that great. The espresso shot died before it was completely mixed and there was not any chocolate flavor that one would expect in a drink with the word mocha in the title. read more
