Look past these ill tidings, however, and there's a lot to like here. The Green Bean is bright and spacious with plenty of seating inside and out. The menu features some appealing seasonal drinks made with local (Fortuna?) beans. The barista I spoke to was kind and patient while I made up my mind. The decision between the Cherry Street Latte (espresso/cherry/vanilla) and the Sundae Mocha (espresso/caramel/white mocha/whipped cream) was a tough one, but I ended up going with the former. The syrups were good, and were it not for some bitterness - perhaps a lighter roast than I'm used to - I'd have liked the coffee as much as I liked everything else about this place. Between Savage Roasters, Kyle's, and others, Kernersville is almost as coffee-packed as Greensboro, and it can be hard to pry yourself away from a local favorite. While a few of the seasonal drinks looked enticing, I ultimately went with an iced salted caramel toffee crunch latte. It definitely ran sweet - I'll ask them to tone it down for future orders - but it made for a smooth sip and a welcome jolt. While you can practically trip and fall into a decent coffee shop in Winston-Salem, Melrose's look and feel help it stand out.
