We have been traveling quite a bit lately and while I normally try to keep my reviews mostly local, I absolutely had to give some love to Food Lab in Old Town Prague. Our hotel was very close to the restaurant and we literally stumbled upon it (when quite hungry after a long travel day) and it quickly became one of my top five dining experiences ever! We visited Prague during the Christmas market season so the restaurant was glowing with holiday spirit. The staff was amazing and the food impeccable. I am still dreaming about this meal. The menu changes frequently but on this cold winter evening, we enjoyed the warm mushroom bisque, a grilled seafood dish with pasta, and the duck breast with gratin potatoes. I have never ordered duck before (other than confit on a salad) and this was "off the charts" delicious! Such a wonderful experience. Such a cute spot & fun vibe! Came here once during my time in Prague. They put a lot of thought & work into the restaurant! The staff were attentive and incredibly friendly! I tried the celery cream soup to start and it was phenomenal! I would go back just for the soup! I also ordered the crispy chicken thigh with salad and to be honest, I just didn't love it. It was just a "fancy" fried chicken. Nothing really special. I should've tried the pasta or one of the other dishes because I've heard the food here is good. I guess I was just confused by the menu and expected something else. I also got a couple fresh pressed juices to-go for the next morning and they were delicious! I would definitely give this place another shot next time I'm in Prague! read more

Service here was fantastic. We really like the atmosphere as well. The food was awesome. One suggestion if you were used to steaks in the US, a medium rare here was very rare so less cooked than I would've desired. It was still delicious. I chose the pepper sauce which I loved. The food is excellent and the ambiance is really nice. It's a bit noisy due to the fact it's a fantastic place to bring kids. There's even a child care playroom downstairs with an attendant!! We made reservations to eat breakfast here and when we arrived the lady in the restaurant was very rude and yelled " good morning!" very condescending. - our entire family was shocked and turned around and walked out. What a rude lady!!!!! Sad because i was looking forward to trying this place. We ended up going to the place around the corner called Nostress and it was really good, go there instead. read more

My husband had the duck inside pasta, don't remember the name, it was good but the shrimp pasta was so good. The decor and atmosphere is beautiful. Yummy food, great service, and beautiful ambience! I got an Americano and pancakes with ricotta, fig syrup, and pumpkin seeds. The pancakes were great, just like in the US, and the whole plate was good, but not as flavorful as I thought it would be. Maybe I needed a little more syrup than what they put on it or maybe the ricotta could be enriched with some other kind of cheese or something. While there is no side of bacon on the menu, the server and kitchen were happy to provide it when I requested, and it was delicious. My bacon experiences in CZ have been touch and go because sometimes it is very different than I'm used to. This bacon was like bacon from home (US). Yum! Came here for a unplanned dinner one night since we didn't know what to eat. I have to say that their plating would get 5 stars, but their food was just mediocre. Decor is beautiful and the place is spacious and very comfortable. I had the tiger prawns for my first dish. This dish was actually not bad, but I don't understand why of all the 3 shrimps I had, 2 of the 3 were deshelled but one still had shell on it. The one with the shell felt like it was just randomly dropped on there. Aside from that, there was a nice mix of flavors. The dates added sweetness to it which was interesting. The seabuckthorn threw me off at first, but I found that it brightened the holladaise sauce. My friend had the soup and she thought it was good and the bread with it was also good. The other dish I ordereded wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. I had the veal neck with juniper, baked pumpkin, hazelnut and elderflower. This dish was beautiful but it did not work for me. The meat didn't have flavor, even though it was very tender. The juniper sauce was cute display wise, but it added fruity flavors to a flavorless meat. The hazelnut added texture nut not much flavor. Pumpkin added sweetness but when I ate all of it together, it just didn't tie well together. My friend had the octopus with quinoa and she felt that it was ok too. The presentation was more appealing than the flavors itself. Service was also not great. It was hard to get a waiter to attend to you at some point. We wanted pay for the bill but the waiter was hardly seen. We had this on the last night at Prague and I was disappointed that we ended it with that meal sadly. read more

Interesting restaurant; the concept is taking traditional Czech dishes and contemporizing them as small servings (tapas). As an added touch, the music being played complements the restaurant theme. All the music is retro, going back to big band, but performed in a modern style, very creative. Really fabulous. Not well known yet, you can normally get a table without a reservation, even on the weekends. That will change. read more

We made a reservation earlier in the day for dinner . Hostess was helpful and friendly and accommodated our request. We ordered an appetizer which was good . Drinks and appetizers came in timely manner. But we had to wait a long time for our main entrees . We were never offered water by our waiter and we realized that all the other tables had a carafe of water. Our waiter never came back to check on us after our main dishes were served . I had to ask for a cup of water that took forever to come . We were not offered the dessert menu or asked if we needed something else . Overall , I was not impressed with the food at all . As soon as we walked in we were asked by a hostess were we would like to seat. The atmosphere was very lovely and cosy. Great design inside from the very front to the back. The service was good and the waiter knew what to recommend us for the starters. The beef tartare was among the best i ever had but the pork belly dish was the king. Just my opionion, my very own taste. I even had a chat with the chef about the dishes. All in all its a must. Great job guys!!! read more

We walked in for dinner hungry and exhausted. When we walked in it already looked amazing, it was cute and had a cool story. We ordered a host of entrees and all were delicious and memorable, the fried sesame balls in particular. The only semi-disappointment was the kids pasta, but was still decent. After reading positive reviews, we were excited to try this place. Unfortunately, we must have come on a bad night. The food was good, not great. The service was just bad. We were basically ignored and I had to ask 2-3 times for more water and another beer. At the end of the night, their credit card payment wasn't working. Luckily, I had cash, but hard to believe others in the restaurant all had cash. Just a disappointing meal. read more

We ate here twice and the food was great. Also had interesting combinations of food. For lunch we had the sesame balls with prosciutto, pistachios, and raisins with a little miso sauce. Hearty, well-prepared food, great environment, and good service. Prague customer service is hit or miss, but our experience here was all positive. The mango sticky rice dessert needs proper Thai sticky rice to round it out better, and the beef bourguignon and mashed potatoes were excellent but could have been plated more coherently, the pea soup was also excellent with the fresh bread they served. We had a late lunch here on a very hot day. We appreciated the cooled interior and carafe of water. We shared the crispy sesame balls which had prosciutto, pistachios and raisins coated with the seeds and served with a miso mayonnaise. We asked what the binder was. It didn't seem like potatoes and with help from a phone translator learned the binder was turnips. Who knew? It was so creamy on the inside and so crunchy on the outside. And very flavorful. We also shared a delicious salad that had avocado cream, pomegranate nibs and pumpkin seeds with a sesame oil dressing. Both were perfect for the hot day. Service was so kind and outstanding. We stopped for a late breakfast here too the next morning and relaxed at an outdoor table in the cool morning. Everything delicious and fresh. read more

Food Lab is an extraordinary restaurant in Old Town, Prague. First, the restaurant is off the main touristy area, although that is a five minute walk away. From what we could tell, locals outnumbered foreigners by about two to one. Most importantly, the food is just excellent. We had five dishes, including dessert: hummus with veggies and sublime, toasted bread; roasted beet salad with cheese; duck breast, and home made pastrami. For dessert, we had an apple brioche, and I had a cappuccino. Everything was delicious, but the duck was especially well done. Perfectly seared outside, rare inside, sitting on a bed of polenta, plus a dark, wine sauce. Sublime! Service was attentive throughout. However, Food Lab is amazingly inexpensive for a restaurant of such high quality. Our dinner, plus a glass of wine for me and two small bottles of Perrier, came out to less than fifty dollars US. A dinner of similar quality in San Diego or LA would cost at least twice, ir not, three times as much. The dinner was also less expensive than two other more touristy places we went, and a hell of a lot better. All told, run, do not walk, to Food Lab. Cant recommend it highly enough. read more

Sadly I have to only give this place three stars. The food and drinks were good but for whatever reason it took 2 hours to get our food. Our waitress repeatedly said the kitchen was slow, but everyone around us got their food and left long before we got our dinner. She acknowledged the wait with free glasses of Prosecco, but the two hour wait wasn't explained very well. read more

We recently ate here on a weeknight as our hotel was down the street. Had only been open a month. Small plate concept. They suggest each person order two or three items and share. The back is a bit more dressy than the front where children were eating with families. Back was more business attire. Have a singer with piano music downstairs on the weekends.
