The server was very nice and discussed our needs patiently. We ordered Rabbit "Marengo" baked with tomatoes plus a salad. The dishes looked pretty, but the flavors were nothing special and derived mainly on the trifecta (fat, sugar and salt). We would expect more at the prices the restaurant charges (perhaps reflecting the price level of the city). We later found a number of other restaurants nearby that served much more flavorful food at similar price levels. read more

Brasserie La Gare, just like the name implies, is just steps away from the Namesti Republiky metro station and is also close to many tourist attractions. It is indeed in a touristy area, but after having walked a few dozen miles in Prague already, on the last night, close proximity and convenience trumps everything else. We made a reservation online and when we arrived we were promptly led to a table in white tablecloth right next to the window in the dining room. For appetizer, we shared a dozen SNAILS - yes, in Prague, even in a French restaurant, they call them snails, not escargots. In fact, Central Europeans had a long tradition of eating snails even before the French made this delicacy famous. The escargots, ok..., snails, were cooked in rich garlic butter mixed with parsley (that's what the green stuff is just in case you are wondering.) They were delicious, and almost as good as those from the streets of Paris. The CHATEAUBRIAND was brought to us on a carving board together with bone marrow, side dishes of vegetables and mashed potatoes, and a sauce boat full of yummy peppery gravy. Our server carved the beef nicely and plated the dishes meticulously at our table side. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender and very flavorful. We could easily tell this was top quality filet mignon and nothing less than the best cut. For the side dishes, I particularly liked the mashed potatoes which tasted like they were made with fresh and naturally creamy potatoes. The peppercorn sauce was rich but not overwhelming, subtly complementing the natural flavor of the steak. Service was 5-star throughout our meal. It began with a complimentary "water melon with bacon" palate cleanser, and ended with complimentary house-made chocolate at the conclusion of our meal. Service was attentive, friendly, prompt but not rushed, and literally white-glove throughout the night. You want me to give you a reason for visiting Brasserie La Gare, or Prague in general? La Gare titillated my senses of sight, smell, taste, touch (texture). The restaurant is near my hotel, so we looked in and read the menu. Admittedly, we were in the mood for a steak, but the French fries cooked in beef tallow set the hook. Upon entering, the gorgeous and gentle aromas of woodsmoke and grilled steaks teased with untold delights. Upon sitting, we ordered drinks. My fellow beer fans will find the local, unfiltered Pilsner a rich reward. The waiter steered us to the ribeye they age in house. Do this. It is an unforgettable experience. The smallest one available was 650g, so it was to be a shared dish. French onion soup? Outstanding. The aged cheese was different than what I normally, have, but it was outstanding. Then our steak arrived sliced like a Brazilian barbecue. It was easily one of the best steaks I've had in my long-ish life. It was tender, rich, beefy, and the clarified butter added some fat and pleasant nutty notes. My companion loved the béarnaise, saying it was the best ever. If I lived in the Czech Republic, I'd eat here regularly. Service was outstanding. Stopped in for a quick lunch as I walk past here almost every day. Decent sized patio seating and a bigger interior dining room with a nice French decor. Seems like a very popular lunch destination - located right around the Namesti Republiky metro. I opted to sit inside and was greeted and seated promptly. It did take a good minute for my waitress to arrive, but once she did the service was good. To note: the menu is in Czech or French I didn't ask if there was an English version, but I got by with my French. I should have chosen from the lunch menu but I got the Tiger Shrimp in a chili, ginger and butter sauce off the regular menu. The shrimp came on it's own so I had to order a separate side, which I chose mashed potatoes (potato puree). The potatoes were delicious, homemade and buttery (YUM!) The broth that the shrimp sat in was delicious flavors, not too spicy from the chili, but I'm not sure if you just order the dish by itself, I guess you can eat the broth like soup? I asked for some bread to sop up some of that rich broth. Also for the $$, they could have offered a side. So, flavors were good, but I wasn't crazy about the texture of the shrimp - almost like it was cooked through too much so it was more chewy than I like. I didn't try dessert this time but the ones I saw going by looked good. This was on the pricey side for lunch and there are lots more less expensive options around. read more

It's ok, we mourned a little but when it's replacement came we were all happy again. Our server apologized profusely - poor lady really felt bad when, to us, it was just a minor delay to order. I started with the duck Foie Gras. Served with perfectly toasted bread and caramelized red onions. At first I hesitated on the onions but once I tried it all together it was delicious. Even my "picky eater" sister liked it. As main course I had the duck breast, also really good. Served with orange and a Grand Marnier Sauce. All main dishes come with 3 sides: potatoes, and different vegetables. That night we got creamy potatoes, white asparagus, and artichoke. Yes, I tried all 3 and cannot tell you which was my favorite. I would go have them again. From the other plates at the table, I tried the Coq au Vin - this is one of their most generous portioned plates, the Fricase the Guinea, and the Beef Cheeks were so tender you almost didn't need a knife. Wine carafe was enough for four glasses, and good pairing to our dinner. Oh, and their coffee, I LOVED! I had a "piccolo", which is like an espresso, it's thick and strong - exactly how coffee should be. It's located near the National Centre so you have a nice view when waking by. Across the street from the Marriott. 1-1/2 blocks around the corner from Powder Tower. ** Where can you find delicious french onion soup for under 5 USD? ** Try their eggs benedict on potatoes galette for breakfast or Croque Madame if you are hungry. ** Bread is home-made. ** Moist, thick cut grilled porkchop with green peppercorn sauce, mixed salad, and cantaloupe gelato (perfect last meal in Europe before flying home) ** Customer service is professional and courteous (staff speaks great English). ** They open 8a-10p for dining, bar open until midnight. We liked Suzana- she was funny, personable, and she taught us a few words in Czech. She even packed a small bag of chocolates for us to go. Came here for late lunch on our first day in Prague. I picked this place since it was a recommended place from Rick Steves Prague book. I ordered Sous vide lamb roll on a bed of sauteed spinach and my friend ordered Riasling braised quail with black trumpet mushrooms. While we waited, our waiter brought out a basket of bread. My lamb roll was superb. For the price of 298 Czech Korunas (~$14), it was very reasonable for that much lamb. The lamb was well cooked and very flavorful. The shallot sauteed spinach was very delicious as well. It reminded me of what my mom makes back at home except we use garlic instead of shallots. We came here on the recommendation of another Yelp-Er. The ambiance is really nice. But the service and food were not up to standard. I ordered a glass of wine. It took forever and the waiter (not our waiter) came and poured the remains of a bottle into my glass. It seemed like a very small pour. So when our waiter came back around we asked and he explained they pour 0.12L per glass. Fine. And that was on the menu - but still really small. My husband made it clear he was only there for dessert. And it was explained that the apple tartin takes 15 min to prepare. Excellent. Must be special! Right? Then when our food came the dessert Was nothing special and my husband was convinced it was at least a day old and not warm enough for 15 min prep. My veal ribeye was tasty. But there was no side dish. We had discussed the potatoes with the waiter. But some other dude dropped our food off and scurried away before we could ask any questions. We were totally done with our food before the waiter ever made another appearance. When asked about the potatoes he acted like we had never ordered. Of course they were on the bill! We had high hopes, but we were disappointed. We ordered the Boudin Noir and the Ragout, as well as the Jambon de Bayonne, with an aperitif, I don't remember which. The drink was meh, the Jambon was alright but it tasted old, the fish was not cooked well in the ragout (not enough), and something else in it that was spongy was unidentifiable. The salmon was definitely frozen previously. The shrimp was okay though. The Boudin was a burger, which is okay (the brioche could have been grilled a bit more) but it was a soggy mess, like eating the worst, mushy kind of veggie burger, except it's blood sausage. Not ideal. The brussel sprouts that came with the Boudin were superb, but it couldn't carry the table, alas. The server also unapologetically reached over my wife's plate to refill the water once, nearly elbowing her in the nose, which is not okay. If you're going to hawk a table (and they do, who wants someone to watch you eat?), come around it to refill water or take a plate, don't reach across a customer. read more

We were able to walk in without reservations - there were plenty of tables available; however, the waiter had to talk with the maitre d' for a bit before we were seated. If the waiter had spent a similar amount of time providing us service as he did grooming his beard and mustache - this restaurant would´ve been four-five stars. We were not informed of any specials then realized there was a board full of them off to the side. I saw baked oysters on the menu and ordered them but would´ve preferred raw. There was nothing in the menu to indicate they had a raw bar available. After a bit, the wife pointed out another sign way off on the other side that listed the raw oysters available - if I had known I would´ve ordered a tray for us. The food was good, but they´ll charge you for bread and a side that they select for you without asking if you want them or stating that they are not included with your main course order. We ate at a nice Czech restaurant the night before and bread was included and they specifically asked if you upfront if you wanted a side and what your selection was. I like that style. For dessert, he provided us no menu and when my wife asked, he informed her to go to the display case to pick one out. I stated, "you mean you have no crème brûlée?" "Oh, we have crème brûlée." I was thinking, "what else do you have?" but that is what we wanted The waiter was going through the motions and it was evident that he didn´t give a rat´s ass about us. Other waiters covered for him with wine pouring, etc. The restaurant was far from packed, we were dressed very nicely, were polite, etc but the waiter wasn´t rude per se but was completely unattentive and it detracted from our experience and our rating. read more

This restaurant was very close to our hotel. Being that we were exhausted from a long day, we elected to eat somewhere close even though they did not serve Czech food. The food that they did have was absolutely amazing. I ordered the duck breast with orange and duck flavored sauce which paired quite well together. We also got the veal steak which has to be the most tender and delicious veal that I have ever tasted. Our waiter was very professional and helpful as we chose our dishes. The prices we very reasonable, ranging between 10 and 20 euros per person for dinner. We returned here for breakfast. Once again, everything was delicious and rather inexpensive. I ordered the "Traditional" breakfast which includes juice and coffee. For about ten euros I got an amazing breakfast that was more than I could eat. This is a terrific Boulangerie, cafe, wine bar. The food & coffee are fantastic fresh French fare. I had one of the best meals in Prague here, and it's French. I had the largest Croque Madame there that I have ever seen. The breads and desserts are wonderful. The Onion Soup (French Onion Soup) was amazing. I could have a bowl of it daily. I looked over the wine list and wine cellar which in in the downstairs area of the brasserie. Upstairs is mainly the café with a separate area for the boulangerie. It is next to the Hilton Old town and across the street from the Marriott Old town, Prague. Beware families with unruly children. Other than that it's terrific. I do recommend it. read more

When in Prague, eat.. French food? Sounds weird, but we were looking for a nice (i.e. not fast food, not a loud pub) dinner close to the hotel, since half of us had extremely early flights back home. The best thing about this place is the price (well, really, all of Prague is super affordable and very budget-friendly): we each had an appetizer (French onion soup and escargot for me) and a main, yet the total was like $20 per person including tip at the end. Amazing. So if you're looking for a nice French-Czech meal near your hotel (which for us happened to be the Hilton a block away), this is both hearty, cheap, and very good. read more

Great French meal in Prague!! I was thoroughly impressed. Walked in during lunchtime and saw many Czech locals and workers grabbing lunch. I got the French onion soup and the Croque Madame. The French onion soup was yummy but it was pretty heavy considering how much cheese they put in there. It also could have been a bit saltier. The Croque Madame was amazing (and also HUGE). It's the type of dish that you stare at and think "HOW DO I EAT THIS". Went for the fork and knife method but the sandwich was so good I wish I wasn't as full as I was. Overall, the restaurant definitely had an authentic French vibe and not too touristy as other Czech restaurants. Really enjoyed the environment and the food was so delicious as well. But not terrible prices, considering the quality of the food, service and ambiance. The Coq au vin is absolutely amazing, and will transport your tongue to the fields of Burgundy. And with a nice red burgundy wine, well... heaven. And those desserts! Oh my god, those desserts. There's also an Alsatian wine bar/eatery downstairs. One of our go-to's in the center. I visited La Gare on a Wednesday evening, just before 8 pm. There was plenty of free tables, and it was a lovely summer evening, so I went for a table on the terrace, from where I could watch the endless herds of parading Asian tourists led by a guide holding a folded umbrella over her head. Having passed by La Gare a couple of times and glanced at the menu heavily inspired by French cuisine left me with high expectations. In comparison with the average restaurant in Prague, La Gare's menu oozes with high culinary ambitions. I chose the braised beef tongue with herb mustard, pickled onions and apple chutney for the starter. I am a sucker for beef tongue and unfortunately it is one of those dishes that has gone out of fashion. When the plate arrived, it was stacked with five slightly grey thick slices of tongue. Unfortunately, the chef had not taken the trouble to take off the skin and the meat hadn't been salted before braising, hence the grey colour. This left the plate with a slightly indelicate impression. Two of the slices had an intense beefy flavour and were tender as butter, just as they should be, but the remaining three slices were chewy. They had apparently not been braised long enough. The herb mustard was ok and well-balanced, but I could not taste any herbs, and the pickled onions were too vinegary for my taste. Definitely a more Czech than French taste. The apple chutney was excellent. Sweet and acidic at the same time with a distinct taste of apple. The bread and butter that did not accompany my starter, but had to be ordered separately were fresh but had a distinct similarity with the bake-off bread the sell in the supermarket across the street from La Gare. At 35 CZK it was definitely not worth the money. For the main course, I chose Beef Bourguignon. I asked the waiter, how it was served, and he explained that I could make a choice between French fries, green salad or "a variation of three seasonal side dishes". I chose the latter which was served in small cast iron pots along with a large plate of braised beef in a dark brown sauce. The small iron pots contained leeks stewed in cream, mashed potatoes and a vegetable risotto. The braised beef was nothing but divine. Tender as a ripe peach and with an intense and saturated punch of red wine, vegetables and meat. A small piece of smoked ham and a boiled but still crispy carrot made a very subtle contrast to the strong taste of the sauce. The creamed leeks and the mashed potatoes were excellent. Both alone and in combination with the Beef Bourguignon. The vegetable risotto, however, was a sheer disappointment. The vegetables were pickled red peppers and the rice were underboiled and had a crunchy centre. Not good! The service was above average, for what you would typically experience in Prague's more touristy areas, but it was not up to the standard signalled by the menu, the decor and the prices. When I arrived, I had to wait almost 10 minutes for service even though the waiters were far from busy with anything else but a private conversation. Once they got their act together, service was prompt and efficient, but not overly attentive. I ended up with a tab of 655 CZK excluding tips, which in Prague must be considered very expensive for what I had. Had the service and the preparation of the food been up to standard, it would not have been unreasonable, but with the numerous glitches, it was not ok. I doubt I will return to La Gare. read more
