While we were in Prague looking for a place to eat, a friend recommended La Veranda, and so we went. The food was beautifully presented and prepared. We decided to go with the tasting menu and wine pairing, and I'd absolutely recommend doing the same; it takes the guesswork out. Each course was very nice with Czech wines well matched and allows you to experience Czech wine and some Czech inspired dishes. The atmosphere was comfortable and a great spot for a date night or dinner. It's on the pricier side for Czech republic but still affordable, and the portions on a tasting menu won't satisfy someone looking for a big, heavy meal. Service was great. If you're in Prague and want a polished dining experience, and Zagat rated at that, La Veranda is worth it, especially if you go all in with the tasting and wine pairing. read more

What a strange experience. First our reservation wasn't found, and after some back and forth it was uncovered - unfortunately the restaurant was almost completely dead on a Friday night in Prague 1, so it shouldn't of been an issue either way. Ultimately, not a big deal. Our wait staff appeared to be completely new, they were attentive but didn't know when to remove plates, how to set the table etc - and for a previous Michelin guide establishment, that's an odd one. We started with a pumpkin carpaccio which sounded interesting - it was sickly sweet and sour, like a child's candy. Definite pass. We also did their cabbage entree which felt confused and was closing in on inedible - Worcestershire sauce and kimchi was the apparent combo. The pappardelle with venison was fine, unbalanced seasoning - very heavy on warm spices. After over a week of bad food and bad service not to mention all the scamming in Czech Republic, we were in desperate need of a good restaurant. My husband and I had a reservation at the Michelin starred "Field" restaurant for another day (see my other review), but this place was bonus that we happened to discover by chance. We got to the restaurant earlier than their opening time, so when we walked in (the door was open) they were having a staff meeting and there was a photographer there there to photograph their new items or something. We didn't mind waiting outside as they were not ready to open yet. When it was time, we walked back in and they were very welcoming and they took our coats to hang. We were seated at a lovely window seat (see photo) where we can gaze out the street from below. The restaurant is seated below street level. We ordered from their Retro Menu which's comprised of "The Best of 2002 - 2017." What we ate: amuse bouche : tiny cup of carrot soup was rich, creamy, with depth of flavor. bread : excellent freshly baked, & chewy. Their mini rolls were absolutely wonderful! Seared Duck foie gras with roasted hazelnuts, brioche and sour cherry sauce. I love the sweet balance on this dish with the perfect amount of acidity. Best dish of 2005. Octopus carpaccio with celery, rucola, and olive oil. Tender and sweet octopus. Best dish of 2008 Slowly braised Veal cheeks with marsala, parsnip purée, young carrot and crunchy bacon. Melt-in-your-mouth good. Fine balance of textures dancing in my mouth! Best dish of 2012 Grilled scallops served atop risotto with truffles, black salsify, port and red wine reduction. Perfectly cooked! Best dish of 2006 Dessert: Pineapple filled with lemon parfait . Refreshing and delicious! Best dessert of 2009 This little gem of a restaurant is Michelin recommended and a must visit when in Prague! I have La Veranda to thank for erasing my unsavory memories of Czech Republic. :) Total bill was $140 including tip. It is hard to pick a French/Italian style restaurant in Czech, but La Veranda is worth it and they source their ingredients from local farmers before applying most French preparation style. We picked it based on Yelp reviews and closeness to our hotel. We spent much of the day driving around and I was quite beat. I certainly didn't want to drive any more. Walking distance was the only option. We were not disappointed. We walked in on a quite day and were not disappointed. I blindly followed the guidance of our waiter, negotiating out a few things that I don't like (no asparagus for me). Foie gras de canard is a must, especially with the recommended Czech red (sorry but I don't recall what the waiter recommended after I mentioned my Bordeaux bias). I had no idea that Czech wines would be that good. Beet salad and truffle risotto were perfect. Finally creme brulee and cava sorbet with espresso created a fantastic finish. read more

The service was great and attentive. We ordered the foie gras appetizer, tenderloin lamb and glazed veal entrees. I'm not a foie gras connoisseur so I can't really say much about it except I'm not a big fan of this foie gras. The lamb tenderloin didn't really have the lamb flavor I was expecting--I didn't taste any hint of gaminess from the lamb. I think the ground parsley didn't really enhance the flavor of the lamb either. It didn't have much of a flavor as I recall. The veal had a weird squishy texture that I was not used to. Honestly, it taste kind of like raw chicken to me. For the appetizer, two entrees and two glasses of wine, our bill ran up to 1700 something krona. I think it was a bit overpriced for what you get and the food was not so memorable that I would come back again. read more

I really loved the food here and might even give it 5 stars. It was a little too modern for my parents taste which is why I only gave the 4. The portions are typical french portions (very small for Americans) but everything was delicious. It feels as if you are in an old house's library. I started with Salad of different kinds of tomatoes, rucola, marinated red onion, mozzarella di bufala and basil oil. For my main, I had the Grilled octopus with cherry tomatoes, olives and thyme, broccoli, smoked garlic purée, tomato foam. I'm not much of a dessert person, but went with the Strawberry parfait, marinated rhubarb, strawberries, strawberry glaze and spicy crumble and thought it was AMAZING! We did not get for a reservation, so we had to wait about 30 minutes. We said OK & went next door for a drink. Got a table when we came back & the place was emptying slowly. Had the fish soup as an appetizer & split the serving. It was excellent. A good and mild stock with small prices of salmon, calamari, shrimp & sea bass in the broth with fresh tomato, lots of parsley, onions & garlic. My wife had the rabbit & I had the veal cheeks. Both were delicious. The veal came with veal sweetbreads, a good amount of gnocchi and fresh peas. the rabbit included meat from the saddle, rabbit sausage & rabbit pate. We did not have room for desert, but the cheese tray looked very good. Service was very good. The meal, with four glasses of a very good Czech veltliner, was $66 in U.S. currency. This was a bargain for a meal of this quality, but pricey by Prague standards. In Crowns it was 1590. If you visit Prague, which I highly recommend, this place is worth a visit if you are staying nearby. We have eaten at three places near our hotel: a Spanish place, a Czech restaurant, and this one. We walked in shortly after 10 pm. Their door said they close at 11. When we spoke to the host, he asked if we had a reservation for tomorrow night. The restaurant had free tables. I cannot say enough good things about this memorable meal. If you are serious about food, do not miss this restaurant on a visit to Prague. We stopped some locals to ask for directions, and started chatting with them. We mentioned that we were looking for a good restaurant for dinner, and they recommended La Veranda, which was just up the street. We were so fortunate that they did! The restaurant itself is very pretty. The menu is inventive, but not just for the sake of being inventive... It works. I started with the calamari. They were thin, tender strands of calamari (as opposed to thick rings), served on small wedges of baby romaine, with a few small semi-dried tomatoes that were little bursts of sweetness, and the plate was dotted with lemon confit, which was amazing... A sweet lemony mayonnaise. It was outrageous. The salad with arugula, beets, pecans, Granny Smith apples, and goat cheese was great... Fresh tasting.. The pea risotto with smoked eel and hazelnuts was terrific. Seasoned perfectly. We tried three different desserts... All were magazine cover worthy in appearance (my elderflower granita and frozen lemon meringue was served on a green glass plate that looked like a wine bottle sliced down the middle vertically) They all tasted wonderful as well. Service was top notch. I just wish we found this place our first night and we would have eaten here every night. It was that good. Reasonably priced compared to any US major city. read more

We ate here on out last night in Prague. The restaurant feels warm and comforting. The service and presentation of the food was very professional without being formal. The food itself was uniformly excellent. Between us we had six starters and main courses and each one was good to excellent. I though that this restaurant compared favorable to quality restaurants in New York. It is not cheap by Prague standards, but is considerably less than you would pay for a comparable experience in many other cities. read more
