Perfect lunch spot for reliable sushi and bento combos! Their roll and bento specials are a great deal and hit the spot every time. The ginger salad is crisp and refreshing with one of my favorite addictive dressings. Salmon teriyaki is well cooked and flavored, and you can't go wrong with their veggie and shrimp tempura that comes with the box combo. Nothing fancy but consistently good quality and portions that fill you up. Staff is efficient and the lunch crowd moves quickly. Will definitely be back for my regular sushi fix!

I visited Flying Roll during the lunch break with my colleagues and was able to snag a booth. The dining area looks small but there were plenty of booths available! Our food took a minute to arrive but everything was delicious and our servers were kind and accommodating. We were served with onion mushroom soup made with chicken broth (?), I believe, while we waited for our food. I ordered the California Roll and it was a classic California Roll! Extra condiments (spicy mayo and eel sauce) were given upon request. Will be visiting soon!

Flying roll is a great spot for sushi either tons of options. Out of everything I've tried here, the one I liked most is the inari roll. It's a unique vegetarian sushi and tastes great with soy sauce, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. The green tea here is also great and there are tons of options like fried rice if you aren't in the mood for sushi. The food comes out relatively fast and everyone was very helpful. The restaurant has a relaxed environment and a great place to catch up with friends.

Pretty good spot in Duluth. Friend of mine turned me on to this place and I literally drove past 20 other sushi restaurants to get here. It was worth the drive. Small place inside but makes the service more personal. I ordered a rainbow roll and chicken teriyaki plate on my first visit in. Both dishes were well seasoned and delicious! The whole dining experience takes awhile here, the sushi chefs take their time with the food prep, so don't come in for a quick meal. So stop by for some authentic Korean sushi!

How this place have 4.5 stars is beyond me. The food is painfully obvious that it's low quality. The best thing in their sushi was the seaweed wrap. Everything has cucumber and fake crab meat. Had to return the volcano roll as it was drowning in sauce and was just inedible and had fake crab meat even after I asked to not have it. Beef yakisoba weren't very good as well . Short way to sum it up: everything we ate here tasted like American mall food quality at $40 (one beef yakisoba, one black and white roll, and one regular salmon roll - so NOT worth it). Sigh* We were better off eating at the food court inside Hmart. The server was very sweet though, and the restaurant looked clean, so 2 stars, but I really can't give it more than that. I'm beyond disappointed.

Overall 5/5: One of my favorite lunch spots for sushi when i'm running errands in the area. Food 5/5: I love the sushi here. their sushi is always so delicious and fun. sushi here is decent priced, very affordable in my opinion. I always get so full here. We got a 2 roll lunch combo with the shrimp tempura & spicy tuna. Simple, but still great flavor. We also got their signature marilyn monroll which was probably our favorite along with the crazy crunch roll. i love the crunch of the shrimp in the crazy crunch, it it like no other. We also got the shrimp fried rice, which had great flavor and was good portioned. The shrimp had a good sauce held to them tipped over a standard fried rice. Service 5/5: Service here is great, the server is fast and never writes anything down but our order has yet to be wrong. She also makes sure our waters are full, and plates are cleared as we go. Ambiance 5/5: This place is casual, but i love the booth set up. It is a small space, but they utilize the space very nicely by having raised dividers between booths along with curtains. This just makes the place cozy, and private between each booth. Definitely recommend this place for a casual lunch with friends or coworkers. Thank you, Flying Roll!!

Went here for the first time, and was immediately greeted with friendly service. The restaurant was cozy, and the decorations were pretty. We were even given a ballon, which the family enjoyed playing with. The food was incredible, and you could tell it was fresh because of the smell and sound of the kitchen. The soup, salad, teriyaki chicken, rice, and vegetables were so flavorful and filling. Portions were reasonable and well priced, and they even brought us a mango mochi ice cream, which was absolutely delicious. Definitely going back for more amazing service and food.

This place is cozy and yummy! Presentation of food is always lovely. The Pink Lady roll was delicious and the tempura appetizer was the right size to split between two people. The Fuji Volcano roll was pretty good but also a bit overwhelming- there was too much of the sauce on top. Can't remember if mayo is listed in the ingredients, but there was something in the sauce that made it overwhelming - I ended up scraping some off of my last couple pieces. But in general I have enjoyed all the rolls I have gotten from this place - I'd return again and try other options too!

This is our go-to sushi spot in the area. The quality of food and excellent service has been consistent over the years in which we have been patrons. We have flirted with other sushi restaurants, but always seem to find our way back to Flying Roll. One of the things I enjoy most is the cute, intimate atmosphere of the booth seating. We always end up in a booth, and it feels private. The restaurant is filled with color and ambient light, which makes for a funky and comfortable space. They write the specials on the backs of the booth seats, which is a fun way to learn about their unique offerings. We have always had great and attentive service. And we haven't ordered a dish that we didn't like. We are particular fans of the various rolls that they offer and almost always try one of their specials. Prices are reasonable.

All the rolls were delicious. They bring out a good uniqueness in sushi that I haven't had in a long time in Duluth. The servers were very caring. It feels like you are eating sushi at your friend's house. I will come back to try the lunch special!

I didnt find this place to be above average compared to any other sushi places I've been. I usually eat sashmi, but heeding my friends and other yelpers advice I decided to forgo and get rolls instead. The rolls were very nicely sized and after one I was pretty content. We ordered a few of their sakes, which were really delicious. My favorite is the raspberry or blackberry sake, both which were $20. If I was craving rolls in the Duluth/John's creeknarea, I'd come here again, but I doubt I would come here if I wanted some high quality sashmi. read more

Great place. Fun atmosphere. I appreciate that they didn't do what so many sushi places do with the white table cloths and the fake crystal glasses. Just because I'm looking for sushi doesn't mean I want to feel underdressed every time I walk in and I never feel that way at Flying Roll. It's colorful, fun and you don't feel awkward in jeans. The staff is great, the main server (I've never had another one, so she may well be the only server) is very sweet and recognizes us now. She's efficient, polite and adds to the atmosphere with her personality. The house soup is off the chain. It's not a true miso soup but it's so good. Something about the way they do that broth with the onions is just amazing. Light, salty, onion-y, just plain tasty. The house salad isn't any different than the house salad at any other sushi place but they have a very competitive ginger dressing and the lettuce is always fresh. Their "budget friendly" choices are good, the california roll and such. I think they run about 5$ but where they really excel is their specialty rolls. They have a "crazy crunch roll," a "moonnight roll," and a "spirt of fire" roll that really tip the scales for awesomeness. They are my absolute favorite and I HIGHLY recommend them. They have a few other rolls you won't find on the menu, above the booths they have some chalkboards with some specialty rolls like the jalapeno roll so make sure you take a look at those chalkboards -they hold some real food magic. 5/5. Great food, great prices, fantastic service and just a fun place! read more

OMG. I cannot believe we have lived in Duluth for as long as we have and never tried this place. "Crush on you" "Jenny's Alaska" we're tops. And the tempura Oreo at the end was a bit of heaven. We would skip the chicken teriyaki and fried calamari next time and stick to the sushi. read more

The service was great, I went alone and I had three people ask if I was doing ok. The rolls were great. They have a new dessert, fried Oreos and banana roll... I don't like bananas, so I asked for just the Oreos, and they made it for me! Will be back... Maybe tomorrow for more Oreos. read more

Warm atmosphere and good food! After walking in, I was impressed by how cozy the atmosphere was. Our waitress was very kind and you could tell she loves what she does. We checked yelp for a sushi restaurant that was near our location. When we found the Flying Roll, we were a bit concerned by the outside appearance. But, we did not let that stop us from trying this little gem of a restaurant. Never judge a book by its cover! The sushi was delicious! Visited on a Friday night total of 3 adults and 3 children. The place is small so I wouldn't recommend for a large group. There is no waiting area so expect to exit and enter while waiting to be seated but brace yourself because the wait to sit is a walk in the park compared to the amount of time you will be waiting to eat. Sodas are canned (without refills) and they only carry Sprite, Coke and like fruit punch. Not kid friendly as there is no kid menu available (so essentially not parent friendly... This mom would like to enjoy some dang sushi without having to get a sitter for her kid) The sushi was average at most but with the hunger we had built up with the ridiculously long wait we inhaled them like they were heaven sent. No apologies were made by waitress or manager in regards to the excessively long wait. No discounts or deserts were offered as a courtesy to make things right. 3 small roll dishes, 1 chicken teriyaki, 2 Gyoza orders and an edamame. The appetizers came out with the food ... That's annoying. The price was around $60-70. Would definitely not make this my go to sushi spot and that sucks because I live up the street just minutes away but I would rather drive somewhere else for better sushi and a more pleasant service experience. read more

I love this place!! I come once a week for lunch with my wife. We always get the same things. I get the donkas bento box, she gets the chicken teriyaki box, and we get a roll of sushi we share. Service is pretty good. I only get slow service when they're packed on a lunch rush (they only run one server at lunch). The bento boxes comes with 3 pieces of tempura, salad, 4 pieces of California roll, your choice of fried or steam rice, and some veg with you choice of meat. It's all very tasty!! Anyways i highly recommend this place for lunch!! read more

We tried the Amazing Grace roll (always looking for good salmon skin! ) and the Fuji Volcano roll and they were both GREAT! I often feel like rolls don't taste as good as i expected but no disappointment tonight! Their udon has a lot of veggies and the noodle is thick and chewy; its considerate that they bring the tempura for it separately so it doesn't get soggy. Edamame app was fresh and hot too! read more

This is my favorite place for sushi. It's not a big place and if you don't know it's there, you might miss it. The staff is friendly and in addition to sushi they offer a variety of meals. The teriyaki beef is really tasty. read more

Ate at Flying Roll for the first time tonight with the hubs, and I was not disappointed! Arrived around 6:30PM on a Saturday night. Since it was fairly early, we had no trouble getting a booth right away. The greeter was very friendly and patient with us as we took our time going through the large menu. Everything sounded great, but we decided to forgo the appetizers and go straight for the rolls: Fuji Volcano, Flying Ninja, and BBQ Eel. Three rolls for two people was plenty for us. I mean, I FELT like I wanted to eat more, but I probably would have been sorry afterward. The Fuji Volcano was delicious. It's smothered in a thick coating of crab meat, scallop and a delicious mix of mayo and mildly spicy something or other. With that sauce it was a bit heavy, however, so I recommend splitting this among a table and ordering something lighter to go with it. The BBQ Eel was simple and amazing. The eel was so delicate and fresh -- none of the fishy taste I often encounter at other sushi restaurants. The Flying Ninja had shrimp tempura in it and was also deliciously fresh. It's covered in a Panko bread crumb topping, so can also be a little heavy, so keep that in mind. I was really pleased with everything we ordered. I can't wait to come back and try more! read more

seems like they changed management a few months ago. Food is no longer good, fish were not fresh at all, we visit this place a few time and it was disappointment every time. Service was good, but not the same quality in terms of food quality. will not visit again. read more

First the negative. We waited about 40 minutes for our appetizer, while watching people that came in well after us eating happily. We also sat with empty drinks for more than a couple of moments and no one came by until our empty glasses sat at the edge of the table for a bit. Will it stop us from going back? No. Way. Once our food arrived, it was outstanding (and the service was much more attentive once we expressed our concern over the timing issue). Hands down the best sushi I have ever had. We started with the Flying Tower, and had the Oh My Flying Roll and the Pink Lady. All were excellent and will make it very difficult to try anything else when we go back, which I'm already plotting. So happy to have discovered this place. read more

Sushi was delicious and fresh but the dine in meal was stale and dry. Server was pleasant but not attentive at all. The place is clean, nice, and cozy and the hours listed for the business were actually correct. I waited outside for 15 mins for the midday reopening and they actually turned the sign on and unlocked the door about 7 mins before the dinner opening. If I do revisit, it will be early enough to 'hopefully' get fresh dine in meals. Because of the fresh sushi and cleanliness, I give this place a 3.5 stars, too bad that's not an option here on yelp. read more

So I totally walked in here on a whim... I was at the laundromat next door and was hoping this place served wine (hey, Monday 's are rough!). I was greeted by a really pleasant and warm decor- booths lining the walls and tables in the middle. The server seated me promptly and offered me a menu and wine list. Now, I wasn't planning on eating but their sushi list looked ahhhhh-mazing!!! So I ordered The Pink Lady roll and an order of edamame. It was scrumptious!!! The sushi was fresh and the edamame was not over-salted!! Basically, this little spot was the best part of my day. I can't wait for my next laundry day! read more

Initially I was handed just this Korean-Chinese menu...and when I asked if they had Bento Boxes, they handed me the Japanese menu, but I didn't see any sushi rolls on the menu (??). I should have asked, but I just let that go. In retrospect, I really regret not asking. But then again, I wonder why they didn't hand out ALL the menus right off the bat? Who knows...Maybe they had a third menu with a list of sushi rolls?? ANYWAY, I ended up ordering their Bulgogi Bento, which turned out to be quite substantial in portion, and well presented. The thing I didn't like was the bland, undercooked Bulgogi, with excessive fat. I've been getting served a lot of Bulgogi like this lately around town..and it has somewhat turned me off to Bulgogi in general. I personally prefer a much better cooked Bulgogi, with less fat. I enjoyed the Japchae, as well as the fried sides, but frankly, all the foods were all lacking in full Korean flavor. It's a small, intimate place. The server and his aunt were both there cooking! I asked our server about the spices I couldn't figure out. He said it was star anise and cinnamon stick. Now I have no choice but to return. It's unique. Our family comes from Bloomington-Normal Illinois. Believe it or not, their Thai Restaurant is the best we have ever tasted. When we arrived here twelve years ago , we wanted Pad Thai like they make, so we do what any transplants would do. We gathered friends and gave them nine restaurants to go to. They brought their Pad Thai entrees in. We numbered and rated them. Their winner wasn't good enough for us to remember it. Recently, we did it again. We called it our PAD TRY! We had seven entrees. The winner was Thoom Thai at this location! After the testing, I told my daughter I'd hoped this one would win because I'd picked this entree up. It was near my home and was just so small, intimate and charming! So last week, my daughter and I finally went again. She had the Pad Thai again. This place has been signified as WORTHY by winning our "road trip" Pad Try! It's a keeper!

I would say the soup was a little too salty for me but I just added more water and it tasted fine after that. Highly recommend checking it out if you need an inexpensive value meal!
