I've always been a fan of Flying Dog because of its outrageously named beers! My visit here recently was awesome! I was able to make it to a tour of the brewery which helped me learn so much about what makes them stand out and what was next for the business. Some cool details from the tour were all of grains are from Ireland! AND they use reverse osmosis to take out all the minerals then add in the same minerals as that is in the water of Ireland. Saturday's are their day off but if you come in Monday -Thursday you have a chance to see their bottling process! The best part is they give you samples of the brews during the tour! You even can try a beer that just started in the fermentation process to see what that is like in comparison. Their prices aren't too bad, $6 for a beer and $8 for a flight! A big incentive to come to the brewery is some of their most unique pours are exclusively located there! Some of the seasonal/brewery only drinks were: the mint chocolate stout and the strawberry shortcake. So this past weekend I had the pleasure of going to Flying Dog's Brewery and take part in their Beer Geek Tour( which I would recommend) We arrived a bit early so we could get a drink. They had a bunch of beers on tap and it was hard to choose (sometimes I'm indecisive) I had the Imperial Pumpkin & my gf had the Kujo. Both were amazing dark, cold, highly alcoholic and wintery. We finished those beers and headed to the tour meet up by the bar. They took us all through the entire brewing process,From brewing, QA, Packaging ,etc. We had beer throughout the tour and even were able to sample beers they were brewing. The tail end of the tour was a beer tasting with rare beers they have made over the years. That was truly my favorite part. We had a wide variety of brews and I will definitely be going back soon. We visited Flying Dog on a Saturday afternoon after finding their location nearby while searching Yelp. It is important for visitors to realize this is a taproom and merchandise store and not a brewpub. This is not a negative point, just an informational item. The taproom has indoor seating and communal tables in addition to the bar area. On this visit it was PACKED! All available seating and standing tables were taken. Even though it was crowded we were still able to get prompt service at the bar for beverages. Due to the crowdedness we moved outside (yes it was very cold). On the large outdoor patio, they have picnic tables and high tops. Adirondack chairs are set around three fire rings offering a relaxed place for friends. On this day, the fires did little more than smolder due to the wetness of the wood (but its rained non-stop for months so not surprising). Around the patio were several portable heating stations, which looked nice, but unfortunately put out very little heat. I guess I could say this was my one complaint. Investing in strong heaters outside can extend the patio season and increase space for guest. There is a food truck at FD putting out incredible dishes. We are still talking about the specialty French fries topped with the best crab dip!! Amazing. The beer is solid at FD and they offer quite a variety for everyone and several unique brews also. The Dogtober fest (October fest) was very good, as were several of the IPAs. I will definitely return to FD, in warmer weather, because it offers good beer in a relaxing environment. read more

Pretty chill environment in an industrial building type area, most breweries are located in this type of setting. Staff was friendly & kind, I enjoyed a beer flight (4 tastings for $8). The roasthouse pub food truck was on premises, the guy was kind enough to give me half an order of beer battered fries, which were delicious, not greasy and perfectly hot. He mentioned all their food offerings were large portions and I was not that hungry. I like positive, kind, honest folks, that makes a big difference in your experience at any establishment. Space is nice, clean, plenty seating inside & outside (with fire pits), cornhole and a nice merchandise area. Light fun music in the background, great people watching & good for groups. TOUR - You should register for the tour online ahead of time because they "sell out" (in quotes since it's actually free) The tour is educational in a fun way and I didn't mind the candid manor of the guide. Afterwards we did get a free sample before we made our way to the tasting room. TASTING ROOM - It's so super convenient when I come to buy a 6 pack and not really sure what I want to get, so they give you samples to make your decision. But you can also do flights, pints, etc. Plenty of seating and space. There's also a nice outdoor area for when it's nice. I noticed someone complained that you can't bring your kids, which makes me like this place even more. I go to breweries to get away from your little angels. Love this rule. read more

Such a great brewery. Their outdoor patio is awesome for sitting out in the sun and enjoying some beers with their food trucks. I bring my dogs here all the time, and love just hanging out. They have special brews all the time, and the beers and well priced, so visit often to see a good variety. Awesome brewery and tour! Flying Dog has been on my list of places to visit since moving to Maryland years ago-- after our recent tour, I highly recommend if you're into local, craft beers! The tours are offered on a timed basis and reservations should be made in advance (especially if you're with a larger group). The tour was informative and we were able to sample a few brews along the way. The tasting room looks large, but definitely fills up quickly! Not the most ideal place to enjoy a tasting sampler when crowded; there is a large, dog friendly, outdoor patio with plenty of seating (weather permitting). I was glad we visited over Labor Day Weekend-- they just brought back the Dogtoberfest and The Fear (imperial pumpkin ale). Added Bonus: The Fear is available on nitro in the tap room! The beer I stumbled on in Houston, Texas! I can only talk about the beer! This is honestly a praise but may sound strange! The beer was easy to drink! That means I liked it! We had come to try many craft beers Flying Dog was our second choice! It became our choice for the rest of the night! The beer was that good! But the best part were the burps! They were heavenly! The aroma filled my sinuses and my tastebuds were excited! Burps from other beers are tolerable but not good! A large group of friends and I visited the brewery on a Friday evening. The buzz was amazing - not too loud, but clearly everyone enjoying themselves. When I arrived, I asked if they had any ciders, as I'm not a big beer drinker. The bartender then talked me through a little interview about what I like and don't like, then suggested I try a flight. I asked if he could pick the beers, which he was happy to do. To my surprise, I LIKED all four of them! Summer Rental and Tiki Liki (sp?) were my favorites, but the other two were very good as well. A business that has great people to help their customers feel comfortable gets an A+ in my book. I look forward to returning in the future. They had a little store, which was fun. Flying Dog is nestled in an industrial area with an outdoor and indoor seating area big enough for large groups. The great news is that most of the beers can be found in the DMV area in local stores, so if you don't live in Fredrick no worries. The atmosphere is laid back and low key but if you feel the urge and start raging, you have the opportunity to take a picture with your favorite raging bi*$h face, which is one of their most popular IPAs that is enjoyable and goes down smooth. Flying Dog actually really surprised me - in a good way! I thought the place would be much smaller for some reason but it actually has a really nice bar & seating area inside as well as a spacious outside seating area equipped with corn hole boards, other games, and a food truck! I had a flight of the cherry sour, pineapple sour, Oktoberfest, and a pale ale and I fell in love! All of the beers on tap were amazing and their menu is huge- so many to choose from for all different tastes and preferences of beer! It was also nice that the food truck was there because it's hard not to get hungry while drinking (lol). The staff were also very friendly and the music played was really fun. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because someone in my group couldn't drink or eat anything because there were no allergen friendly options. What a lively fun atmosphere, combine that with quality beers and it's just a good time. Came here on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy but the bartenders gave great service and took the time to explain their products. When you first walk in through their gift shop, it opens up to the bar area. It's roomy with a few couches, and bar stools that line the windows. Great place to come with groups yet the noise level doesn't intensify like some venues. As for food, there is a food truck outside of their property and plenty of outdoor seating. Their tasting carts were easy to carry and you can choose which beers you would like to sample on the paper provided. I am a big Flying Dog drinker and I finally got a chance to go out to the brewery. I was a little bummed that they don't offer tours on Saturdays, so BF and I just visited for some drinks. It's in a really random location-- kind of in the middle of a bunch of corporate offices/warehouses, but it's very obvious where it is when you get there. They have a large patio outside with a ton of outdoor seating. It was all filled outside when we got there because it was a beautiful day! When you get inside they check your ID and then you're off to the races. Flights are SO cheap! $7 for a flight of 4 and you can choose whatever. We sat inside but there was a nice big bright window next to us, so it was still awesome. They don't sell food, but they had a restaurant who had set up a tent selling food. I always saw some people bringing in food so it seems like you can bring your own with you. I wish this brewery was closer, because I would love to go more often!! Love Flying Dog beer! read more

Being a furlough government employee Flying Dog made sure to hook us up with free factory tours. My husband and I made our way up here for a 1pm tour on a Saturday. Same day of the tour flying dog had a festival to honor their local vendors. The tour was very informative of giving the history of flying dog and how their beer is made. I found it interesting that employees were working hard on a Saturday brewing some delicious beer. After the tour we were suppose to get free samples from the taproom. The taproom was closed because of the festival so we were given tokens to get 2 beers. I enjoyed some of the freshest premium tasting beer. I loved visiting this brewery. I see their beers often in the DC area but was surprised the brewery is so close in Frederick (still about a 45 minute drive from the city). Of course great tasting beers, and this location has a great taproom to sit down and try flights, listen to music, etc. They have a food truck outside, otherwise the food options in the immediate area are a bit limited (there is a big strip mall / complex about 3 minutes drive away). I was in Frederick, MD one day and found out I was about 2 miles from the brewery - so I had to stop in for a visit and tasting! The place was hopping when I arrived on a Friday afternoon! Lots of folks visiting, some taking the tour, and of course tasting! I intentionally selected Ales I've never had before - so I opted to taste the following Ales: - Bloodline Blood Orange Ale (7.0% ABV) - Gourd Standard Pumpkin IPA (6.7% ABV) - Fear Imperial Pumpkin Ale (9.0% ABV) - Single Hop Apollo Imperial IPA (10.0% ABV) - Double Dead Rise Crab Ale (8.0% ABV) The first four were either IPAs or related to an IPA hop-wise. All the Ales were delicious! Full of flavor and well-balanced. Not your father's Ale! After the flight of four, I noticed the Double Dead Rise Crab Ale - I've had the regular Dead Rise Crab Ale (actually paired with crabs at a crab feast) and enjoyed it. So I was curious to know what makes this Ale "Double." The staff talked about the additional Old Bay Hot added to the Ale - so I had to try it. The Ale did not come off to me as to hot - but it was damn tasty! The staff was in a jovial mood and spent some time bantering with me during my tasting. We tried to take advantage of this town called Frederick, MD, so as soon as we arrived we started hitting their famous brewery, Flying Dog. We managed to get the last 4 spots for 530pm tour on the Friday night. No spots were available on the weekend. The tour group was pretty small with about a dozen of people. It was fun to learn the story about the brewery and the process of making beer. The tour took about half an hour, and we've got to try their new flavor, Mint Julep, as well. The best part is the beer flight where you can pick any four of their beer for $7. There are dozens of beer selection you can pick from their taps. My favorite ones are Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter, Cold Press Coffee Porter and Aronia Berry. Food was great as well. I think we ordered Duck Rolls or something. I was a little tipsy by that time. Flying Dog, you've never steered us wrong! I'm so glad my boyfriend and I ventured here for the Beer Geek Tour on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't crowded and we arrived early, so I enjoyed a glass of Kujo before we got started. (If you drink black coffee like I do, this might be the beer for you!) So the tour started with an amazing sip of Family Drama! As we moved throughout the facility, our tour guy/instructor, gave us all the ins and outs of how they craft their amazing beer. We got to try some super rare beers and connect with some other beer lovers from all across Maryland. We'll definitely be back to take some more classes from them! Top notch craft brewery that has fantastic tours and a bar where you can try all of their different beers. They brew a variety of styles sure to please all taste buds. I highly recommend doing the make your own flight where you can choose 4 4 oz samples of ANY of their beers. Not just a pre selected flight menu like most places. Great way to try new things and mix and match with friends to try em all! I had been a fan of Flying Dog beers for a while but a visit to the brewery has made me a super fan. Maryland's largest brewery- MD Represent! Love this place not only because they named a few beers after me but the staff is super friendly, the tour was both fun and interesting and they have a nice bar and relaxing space to hang out and drink. During the tour they gave tastings of the different stages of beer during the brewing process and we got to see the bottling machine. They also have a large patio for drinking cool brews on hot days. Not particularly an IPA drinker but actually love Raging Bitch and Tropical Bitch- for their taste not just name and artwork (though a plus!) They didn't have the Hefeweizen on tap when I visited but I like that a lot. They got some coffee beers too that were popular and really taste like coffee. The Bloodline Orange Ale was a favorite too. Really can't go wrong. Overall- definitely worth the drive to Frederick to check out the brewery. I love the Flying Dog tasting room & patio! It's such an awesome brewery. The first time we went we signed up for one of the tours, which was totally worth doing if you're interested in the history of the brewery, beer making, etc. Since then we go for beers and a good time. Flights are $8 for 4 tasters, which is a pretty solid price. They typically have at least 20 beers in the tasting room. The vibe is chill & welcoming yet lively & fun. On a nice day, the patio is awesome. There are picnic tables and adirondack chairs AND it's dog friendly! I brought my pup last time and it was a great day to relax & have some flights with the pup in toe. If you get hungry, there is a food truck on premise to satisfying your noshing needs. Inside the brewery you can buy packs or cases of beer to take home, as well as some other items like branded glassware. Their selection of beers means that you could bring almost anyone here and they would find a few they like, including dedicating two nitro taps to non-alcoholic options. There is a good slate of their core line, several seasonal, experimental, and a cask. Flights are a good price too. Maybe the best part is it's the only brewery in the area that is 21+. No bored kids running around. It's nice to have an adult space for a change. The only negative is the short hours -- especially the 7pm Saturday closure. read more

We did the Beer Geek tour and taste and it was stellar. Prof Justin was entertaining, knowledgeable and a great host for the visit. We explored the entire process "grain to bottle drain"; learned the history of the brewery- it's characters; and the subtleties of tasting the huge variety of beers being made at Flying Dog. The Beer Geek tour cost $15 and is only offered once and a while. While I'm sure the free tour is cool we got to really take a deep dive into the operation and the beer making process. I love this brewery! You can get Flying Dog at local stores, but it's such a better experience going to the actual brewery. They've got a ton of unique merchandise and special on tap beers. The pints are super affordable at $6!! There's plenty of seating inside and a patio as well. They are dog friendly! There's usually food trucks on the weekends available for lunch/dinner. They do close pretty early even on the weekends at 8pm. They also frequently have live music on the weekends. It's a 21+ taproom so no kiddos, which could be a good or bad thing depending on who you are but it is preferable this way for us. read more

My husband and I were able to book a tour with Flying Dog one Saturday. From the outside, this place looks huge. We came in the spring time so we were able to see the hops growing up the building. When you get into the actual taproom it's kind of shocking that it's so small. We signed in and waited for our tour. They bring in their reps from around the area to lead tours on Saturdays so we had one of the reps from Pittsburgh. He took us through the standard brewery tour, we've been on a lot of them. The one thing that I will say that made this one stand out over others that I've been on, besides that it was at FD, was that we were given three samples during the tour: One of the wort, one off a tank, and a finished 'to be bottled' taste towards the end. Now, what made this different is that on the tour we went on we were able to try the same beer all three times. It was really cool to see how the beer changes during the brewery process. We stayed for an hour or so after our tour to enjoy the tap room, which does get very very crowded. We've been back a couple times cents and will likely visit again. read more

With as frequently as this place holds events and considering how established they are I cannot wrap my head around why they do not have a larger taproom or a second location. It seems all the other breweries of their scale (troegs, heavy seas, duclaw) have MUCH larger areas or have expanded by opening a brew pub. My wife and I and our two friends love this beer and brewery. However after having a baby, we tried to come on a Sunday afternoon to have a beer at local brewery. Before we even got the stroller out of the car, we were told by multiple random people that informed us that this brewery does not allow anyone under 21 from entering. They stated that they were trying to going in with there 3 year old. Other people driving by said, don't waste your time and offered multiple other breweries in the area and/or places to drink. Since we had a baby that's less then a year old, we figured we'd give it a try anyway. Our baby was asleep in her car seat. As soon as we walked in the door, the employee asked us, " what are you folks doing here" where I then replied, " to drink beer, what else is there to do" he told us that they don't allow anyone under 21 and that we could not enter. I informed him politely that I'm sure my infant daughter is not going to try and get a beer and that she is sound asleep. He continued and would not let us enter. We left without issue and drove to another brewery named ****boy Brewery. (Yelp won't let me name them specifically) Go check them out. Beautiful brewery and great atmosphere. Update.... still not going back and a lot of people I know now refuse to go here, but I guess Flying Dog has bigger issues to deal with then possibly serving my infant daughter a beer. These guys are so much fun! My uncles and I booked a tour here and Serina was our awesome tour guide. Although it was short (granted this is my first brewery tour so idk how long they usually last), we heard amazing stories and had lots of beer! My tour group wasn't too big but it wasn't too small either. Make sure that you wear glasses and closed toe shoes or they'll hand you goggles and a pair of Mickey Mouse rubber shoes. My uncle had to wear the shoes since he brought his flip flops. But regardless Serina made it a really fun experience! Just a note: there are no underage kids allowed in the brewery. Once you're done with the tour you're free to hop up into the bar where you can customize your own flight (and it comes in a really cute wooden tray too!). We decided to take a brewery adventure to Frederick Maryland and visit Flying Dog Brewery. I feel like their beer is everywhere and we figured it is probably worth the visit. It's only about an hour away from D.C. which makes for a doable day visit. We were too late for the tours (the last brewery tour on a Saturday is 4:30 and reservations are recommended in order to guarantee a spot). However we were not discouraged and proceeded to the tasting room. Apparently beer tasting was what the cool kids were doing because the brewery was packed. Luckily we grabbed a spot at the bar. Flying Dog has a decent amount of places to sit. You can order at the bar and take your drinks to your seat- first come first serve. Since it was our first visit, my husband and I decided on ordering tasting flights. The flights include four tasters for $7.00 and you can either pick from a pre-set menu or build your own. While Flying Dog is known for their IPAs they have plenty of other beers to choose from. With me not being an IPA fan- I was grateful. We both decided on a pre-set flight that included the bloodline, In Heat, Citrus, and Naughty- which is one of their seasonal beers flavored with habenero peppers. I liked all the beers I tried; the citrus which was a wheat beer, was my favorite. I savored that beer. I also tried a sample of the counter culture, fig and fennel, and and kujo without nitro which are three of their stouts. I am starting to come to the dark side so to speak and am starting to appreciate stouts. I loved the fig and fennel; it had a nice full flavor without tasting too heavy in my opinion. The bartenders at Flying Dog were fantastic. They were knowledgeable about the beers and took care of everyone quickly and smoothly. Great service and great beer? I'm not a big beer drinker, but I do like going places and having other people drive me around. So when a group of friends suggested a day trip to Flying Dog, I was happy to tag along. I even brought snacks to occupy myself in case there were no beers I could tolerate. My fears were unfounded. The selection was so massive that I found not one, but three beers that I thoroughly enjoyed! My friends and I spent a couple of hours there, and though it was crowded, it never felt crazy or unpleasant. All the bartenders were really nice, helpful, and cheerful, and they were quick to serve us, even when the bar was really busy. I was very pleased with their reasonable prices, including their $8 samplers. I also appreciated the option of getting any beer in a sampler size for just $2. And they did have a guest restaurant selling pizza and snacks, and though I didn't love the food, I was glad it was there. If the weather were nicer, the patio would have been a great place to loiter about, but it was a little chilly for that the day I went. Overall, it was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Though I'm not sure I'd make the one-hour drive to Frederick again, it's certainly worth doing once. read more

The beers were amazing and we really enjoyed both the free tour and the beer geek tour, which provided a more in depth process overview. Woot Woooooot! I drove alllll the way to Fredrick and was not disappointed at all...I missed the tour but I will be back for that.Very Friendly and helpful staff..There is seating inside & outside with heated lamps.You select your brews from the card give it to the bartender and wait for greatness !!There's a good truck parked right outside I bought everything The gumbo & tacos have a special place in my heart .Cant wait to visit again!! read more

This brewery is awesome. I did the tour a couple of months back and it's honestly so cool and huge and teaches you a lot. The best part about the tour is the beer they give you. I tried about 5 different kinds of beer all which were really really good. I then went to the bar area and got a dead rise old bay summer ale which honestly is pretty good. You would think not since it has old bay but it was just right. They have outside seating and corn hole if you want to just drink and play and relax and talk. Great environment and the people that work there have great customer service. Will go back in the near future for sure. read more
