Visited this place on a day trip to Frederick from Alexandria VA. Great reviews so I was expecting the best customer service and beer. Wanted a flight but the beers I wanted for the flight were from cans so could not be included, opted for the Pilsner, it was ok. The inside was very messy, the board games all messy and the merch rack needed some attention. The indoor seated room smells musky and the setas were all messy even though no one was in there because we were all at the patio. The patio on a nice weather day is perfect, and there was live music as well. A pizza truck outside and a good crowd of people. However, it was a day that needed more than one overwhelmed beertender. The lines at times were out the door. Went in for a second beer but the kolsch cans were not opening, the line became longer as the beertender tried her best to get a few open with no success. Ended up ordering the same beer as there was no other one on the menu that I prefer. Besides her needing some help, it seemed she was not supposed to be there past a certain time and that was reflected while she processed the line. Eventually she got a can opener and I was able to try the kolsch that turned out to be better than the Pilsner as I expected. Overall it was an ok experience at this place. If you are an IPA person, this may be your spot. read more

Monocacy brewing is a great place for a cold and tasty pint. The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable and quick. They only serve beer so you don't have one person behind the bar having to make cocktails and pour beer. They have a decent inside seating area and plenty of outdoor seating. They have events such as food and beer pairings. We did an ice cream and beer parking which was an awesome and fun experience. My favorite beer here is ghost of the ice cream man which is named because this building used to be an ice cream production plant. If you're in town trying Frederick's many beers, you have to try this spot! read more

Came here for a show and had a nice time. The inside has a small downstairs space and a larger one upstairs. The outdoor space is expansive and very welcoming with lots of tables, Adirondack chairs, and a fountain. There are over a dozen beers on tap at any one time. Most of the beers are fine - they have something of almost every style, including a hard seltzer. My favorite was their "Ghost of the Ice Cream Man" which was a nice sweet milk stout. The good thing was we got to try a variety with a flight of four. They also have a crowler machine so you can bring your favorite home. Fairly priced. Would come back. read more

First time here. Very good time. I got a stout that was very good. They had a band there in the outdoor dining area. They sounded good. But it wasn't the kind of music I usually listen to. But it's not all about me. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I'll definitely go back. Give them a shot if you like to hit the craft breweries. And they have food trucks for events. Great brews and atmosphere. Nice outdoor area that I believe had a small play area for kids and a bunch of tables in the shade. Food trucks and live music are there often just not when I was there, but that's not what I came for anyway. Quick service and the bartender was good about making recommendations on his favorite brews. It was a really relaxed environment, the inside room with tables was totally empty as everyone decided to enjoy the outside space. The bar area, the first room you walk into, is kind of cramped and small but I was only in there to get my beer and didn't feel a need to be in there for long. Overall I really enjoyed this place, perfect for hanging out with friends and trying the local brew. read more

What a great brewery! The bartenders were a lot of fun to talk to and were ready to be open again. We tried a good variety of their beers through their flights and took a growler home for some more later. Their Growler and Crowley prices and very reasonable. Great local place in Frederick. Most of the seating is available outdoors with some seating indoors. Outdoor seating is fenced in which is perfect if you bring your furry friends. Heaters are provided at some outdoor seating areas if it gets a bit chilly outside. I have been here multiple times and the last time I visited there was a seafood food truck onsite. I am not sure of the food truck schedule but I would recommend calling ahead if that is something you are interested in. Overall, I would highly recommend checking this place out! read more

We ventured to the Monocacy Battlefield and thought why not cap off the day with Monocacy Brewing? Makes sense, right? Hubby had been here before on a brewery bus tour and thought we should stop by since we were in the area. Don't let the small size of this brewery discourage you from staying and sampling the beers. They have an awesome sampler, 5 beers for $5... You really can't beat that! I really enjoyed the Tabula Rasa and Gose of Althea. Tabula Rasa was on the lighter side, cold, and refreshing. Gose of Althea shocked with me the tart and sour notes at first... but the hibiscus flavor really came out as I continued to drink. Only downside to our visit was it was literally hot as balls inside of the place. I heard the bartender mention that because the front door was constantly opening and closing, the AC unit was unable to kick on. Other than that, I enjoyed my visit and look forward to another! read more

Was our favorite brewery to visit in Frederick. Much, much better than Flying Dog that most people flock to. Monocacy is small and intimate, and the people who make the beer are there serving it. In other words, you get a personal, friendly touch, instead of a big corporate factory. Some locals were hanging out and enjoying beers at the bar as well, and there's a nice outdoor area with picnic tables and a large tree to enjoy when the weather is nice. Two of the beers really stood out -- the Riot Rye (one of the best IPAs I've ever had, so I bought a case) and the coffee stout, the "Brewtus." That one is very strong and has won some awards, but had tons of flavor. They brewed it with coffee roasted right across the street at a local roastery - I liked that local touch. I would actually go back to the brewery just to buy more Riot Rye or Brewtus. I hope they can stock them at Whole Foods or Trader Joes. They also make nice beer glasses (not beer goggles...) - we bought a few different ones. read more

But when in Frederick, we a try to hit this brewery. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Always seem to be about 10 beers on tap. I recently moved 10 minutes away from Monocacy Brewing Co. and once I tried their beer, I was sooo excited to be closer. They have some really unique and delicious brews including my favorite imperial coffee stout, Brewtus. At 8.6% abv, it's surprisingly smooth and drinkable. It tastes like the most amazing spiked iced coffee ever! They also have a fantastic mango IPA on tap and a couple great lighter beers including a gose and a lager. Look for the Monocacy Brewing Co. sign on the side of the road when you're trying to find it, or you may get lost. The place itself doesn't stick out very much and it's small/quaint inside. The bartenders have been great every time I've visited and are excited to talk about their beer. The only complaint I have is that they accidentally gave us a Crowler full of a pale ale instead of the mango ipa that we asked for. Other than that, excellent service and quality beer! read more

WOW WOW WOW! I couldn't be happier that I bought a house in Frederick that is a reasonable drive to Monocacy Brewing. The beer here is fantastic. The Ghost of the Milkman Stout tastes like the holidays in a pint! It's mild, full of spice flavors like clove that just kept me coming back for more. Brewtus is an imperial stout that packs a punch without tasting like it! Monocacy used coffee beans from Dublin Roasters right across the street to make this brew and it is fantastic. The mango IPA is also great and full of juicy flavor. The Hibiscus Gose was tart, tangy, and light. Great for a sour fan like me! The gentleman that was working (Ryan? I am terrible with names.) was very nice! He was friendly, informational, and had great taste in music. They offer crowlers and growler fills here. The beers are reasonably priced at around $7 a pint. I can't wait to come back and see what else they brew up! read more

Really enjoyed our visit yesterday. It was nice that it was kid friendly and had corn hole inside for the kids to play. I actually liked that there wasn't a TV so people can talk to each other. The Guava Gose was a fan favorite. I personally enjoyed a the Radiance and Boots N Bonnets. More like a 4.5, but I'll round up because we just had such a great time. We originally were driving through Frederick to grab some lunch on the way to our campsite in the Catoctins. Unfortunately, we were mistaken in our assumption that Monocacy had food (which, admittedly, most breweries don't). We did, however, end up stumbling across a wonderful little establishment with great beer, reasonable prices, and amazing customer service. Since it was so hard to choose which one I wanted, I ended up getting the flight of 4 for $7, which included the riot rye, stout, pale ale, and special lactose IPA that has a limited release. The riot rye and pale ale were very decent; I could definitely see myself drinking them again. However, the real winners were the stout and lactose IPA. The stout was tasty simply because of its quality, but I especially admired the lactose one for its creativity and uniqueness. A lot of new/small breweries are kind of afraid to think outside the box, especially at the start, but Monocacy just threw that caution to the wind and went for it. Although the taste is certainly not for everyone, I very much enjoyed it. I'll be curious to see what other beers they come out with in the future. On top of all of this, the customer service was better than almost every other brewery I've ever been to. The people working there really care about their products, and it definitely came out in the enthusiasm they had while guiding us through our choices. The bartender assisting us (I can't remember her name, unfortunately) chose to bring the tasters to me one by one so that I could enjoy each beer by itself, without feeling rushed to drink the rest before they got warm. She even agreed to take them outside for me so we could enjoy the warm weather. If I ever go back and happen to see her again, I will definitely get her name and update this review. Long story short, if you're traveling through Frederick, remember there's more to the brewery scene than Flying Dog and give this one a shot! read more

Went the other night to pick up crowlers of their newly released Death Eater Imperial Stout and was not disappointed. The stout is delicious and complex, as was the other beer I tried, the Ghost of the Milkman Stout. Beers we've tried in the past have been just as good and the Gose of Althea is a particular favorite. It's a small tasting room but there's generally plenty of seating (a few tables and a set of chairs at the bar). Everyone that works there is amazing, friendly, and will chat while you have a beer if they aren't busy. read more

Really had a nice time here on Saturday. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available. We tried a flight each but shared so we could try 10 of the 11 offerings (didn't have interest in the cask because we aren't big citra fans. I thought all their offerings were very balanced and drinkable. The staff was knowledgeable and interesting without being pushy or condescending. There were a variety of board games available in the back as well as a large screen playing college football. I personally enjoyed the scotch ale, gose and sour. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the stout. I would definitely go back if I were in the area. read more

Given how high they rank of Beer Advocate's list of Maryland's best breweries, I expected a much larger tap room. I was thankful to see that only a small handful of people were currently there by the time we pulled up. We ordered a flight of five beers which were given to us individually after we finished the previous one. This is something I'm not used to seeing when getting a flight from a microbrewery, but I wasn't opposed to it. The first one, Live Oak, was probably my favorite. It was almost earthy and tasted just like what they made it with -- oak. The Ghost of the Ice Cream Man accomplished something I've seen many breweries struggle with...making the vanilla a dominant flavor profile and taste natural. The Sour Black wasn't especially memorable, their pepper ale was a bit much for me, but Nina loved it and the last sample was Cinnamon Embargo, which didn't have any cinnamon in it, but was decent. Finally, I couldn't leave Monocacy without trying their star performer: Brewtus. This is everything a stout should be. I absolutely adored it. I can understand why it ranks so high on Beer Advocate. I would also like to add that the woman serving everyone would frequently make her way around the tap room just talking to people when there was no one in line. She was so sweet and knowledgeable about the product. It was truly a joy chatting with her. read more

This small brewery and taproom in Fredrick MD is crafting some quality beer. They fill growlers and pour samples of a great selection of beer. The location is pretty small without much room for larger parties. Their beer is well crafted and three had a few that particularly spoke to me. The paper canoe was a delicious east coast brewed west coast IPA. The brewtus was also delicious. This imperial stout was loaded with coffee, roasted malt and creamy toffee/caramel notes. If your visiting or local to Fredrick, stop by here to pick up a growler or come with a small group for a tasting. I wouldn't recommend a large group due to the small space available but being the beer home and start drinking, it's definitely worth it! A fun place to stop and get a beer. Enjoyed all of the brews we sampled. The H.L. Rex was a great session beer. Their imperial coffee stout, Brewtus, was an excellent, smooth stout. I am, based on my experience earlier today, genuinely perplexed by the reviews that talk about rude and jerky staff at this place. The three guys working when we stumbled in (we were there to visit the home brew store next door...didn't know that Monocacy Brewing was there!!!!) were super nice, welcoming, and we had a great afternoon spent trying their beers and chatting. Yelp isn't really a beer review board, I suppose, so I will leave that to proper beer boards. I will say that I was fond of Moncacy's beers before I came here. I'd had the Riot Rye and Brewtus. My brother, a major league beer nerd, declared Brewtus his favorite coffee beer ever (yes, he's probably had that one that you just wanted to say "aha, idiot, but has he had...."). I have to agree. It is truly a spectacular coffee beer. I also find their other offerings to be really damn good. We also had the experience of them only having four beers available for the 5 beer tasting sampler. I saw some other reviewer bag on them for this. OH, Puddin'. You baby. So, the one that wasn't available to us was unavailable due to the brewmaster needing to approve it. Maybe it's the budding brewer and BBQ chef in me that has me saying "Ah, I totally understand." That said, for our 5th, we got one more of our choice :) Not a bad compromise. I have never had such rude staff, I walked out they ignored me 3 times yet they would loom at me. The last straw was after both of the bar tenders looked at me when I asked for a tasting (5 beer samples for $5) they both ignored me and helped the new guy who just walked in. Pretty nifty brewery in Frederick - a no-nonsense brewery that gives you a list of year-round brews, and seasonal brews. There are a few places to sit inside but it's really the outdoor picnic seating the real draw. While it's nothing to write home about, their brew is definitely above-average. If you haven't been here, do the flight for $5 and find out what you like - personally the coffee stout was delicious and the price is reasonable. Good service as long as you don't go when they are super busy. They also have growlers to take home if you like their stuff. I'll be back! read more

Came in here with a 10 other crazy friends for the noon tour on a Saturday. We were the first tour of the day and we had a blast! 5 different samples with great explanations, and a short and sweet tour of the brewery. We were all running on 4 hours of sleep and getting a bit zany, but all three employees made us feel welcome. The majority of us bought growlers after the tour, and even cleaned them out the Raspberry Brown! I was lucky enough to get my growler before the tap ran dry, but I'll be sad when it runs out! Showed up at 12:15p on a Sunday, opened at noon. Doors were unlocked as we waited with a 13 month old. Finally, at about 12:20p the brewer opened the door disappointed that the staff wasn't there when it was supposed to open at noon. I have been to their tasting room on a couple of occasions now. I have also tried their beers often at several of the local restaurants in Frederick. They produce some decent beers. This is just my personal opinion: I don't taste a lot of variety in their beers with the exception of their coffee stout. The rest of the ones of tried all seem to be fairly similar and lack creativity. I would love for them to produce a few more hoppy beers: stronger IPAs and Pale Ales. The tasting room is standing room only I think because of regulations. But for a 20-30 min Friday afternoon tasting, I would definitely pop in and have a go. read more

My fiance and I are huge beer enthusiasts - we've been to probably 200 breweries, national festivals, brewed our own beer, etc etc. We recently moved back to Maryland from Boston, and decided to see what breweries close by have opened up since our last visit. It was a slow Sunday, the tap room (which is small - but not a bad thing) had 3 patrons at the bar, and then myself, my fiance, and her mother. Things were fine until the 3 patrons at the bar began an energetic discussion about the various women they've slept with who speak foreign languages, and how unappealing it is. Things were said along the lines of "you should only speak English" and "speaking foreign languages just isn't attractive." They went on to get more specific, citing Japanese and Chinese in particular as being inferior. I know you can't control what visitors talk about when in your taproom, but one of the bartenders behind the counter was fully engaged and participating in the conversation. My fiance and her mother are both Chinese, and even though they were speaking Mandarin at our table, both speak English. It made us feel incredibly uncomfortable, and unwelcome. I've never felt so shaken at a brewery - almost every brewery we've been to has been open-minded and places of enjoyment - but here we did not feel that at all. It was hard to feel like this conversation wasn't geared at us, being the only other patrons at the brewery. The beer was pretty decent, but we'll never be back again - there are many other great breweries where we feel safe and accepted. read more
