Love this joint. Eclectic urban loft space obscurely hidden in Dillon Supply block of Warehouse district. DELICIOUS appetizers (check out half off appetizers after 9pm Wednesdays!!) -- go for heat seeker shrimp and dumplings. General Tso's chicken is also great and refreshingly different than same dish at other local chinese restaurants with great quality chicken, tasty sauce and some sesame seeds that add the special touch. Would give 5 stars to Five Star but their drink menu needs some improvement: at this point, a couple of pricey cocktails, asian beers and sake. I've been here three times and each time I have loved the food (plenty of vegetarian options which doesn't always come with the americanized part of a chinese upscale). The service has sucked each time, however. Awful! The last time she just got more and more of an attitude as we went on. I'm almost sure we had her the second time we went there too. If I could have done 2 and 1/2 stars I would have. Food good. Soups lacking but everything else quite good. Appetizers were nice sized. Shrimp that everyone raves over is good but quite sweet. If it sits in the sauce at the bottom it's soggy. Calamari very good. They were out of all dumplings when we were there. Egg rolls were decent. Dinner portion sizes are huge. Definitely share. We had chicken, beef, shrimp entrees all were well cooked. Now for the down side. Service, awful. Our waitress needed training. She was pretty bad. We had a party of 8, very easy group. Between apps and entrees it took over an hour and a half for food to show up. No explanation nothing. We were not in a rush, but there was no reason for such a delay. While the restaurant was busy as it was graduation that day, it was not over crowded. Drinks from the bar, we only did one round because service was so bad. The drinks themselves were quite good. It took a half hour for drinks to come from the bar. We could see them made and placed on the bar, as our table was about 8 feet from bar. Our waitress brought them over one at a time. Some of our tables meals came out before others. Very inconsistent. Some items we ordered never showed up. Some items only part of the item came out, example a chicken dish with pancakes, only the pancakes came?? For the icing on the cake, they charge a 20% mandatory gratuity on the bill including the tax. If we had not had such bad service I would not be so upset about this. If an establishment is not going to properly train servers then please don't make the gratuity on top of the tax. The heat seeker shrimp tasted good, but they were only mildly spicy. They would only be hot to someone who hates spicy food. The tofu version was also good. The three entrees we got were not. They were all extremely bland, low quality food. The Five Star General's Chicken was highly recommended, and not good. It was barely better than Chicken McNuggets. The Crispy Sesame Beef was tough, chewy, and full of gristle. The chicken in the chicken fried rice was the blandest of all. Absolutely zero flavor. All of the entrees were larger than any Asian dish I've ever had. Here's a suggestion: cut the portions in half and double the quality and flavor. The servers were attractive young college students who would probably be happy with a Big Mac. I mean, what else could I think about someone who would recommend that Five Star General's Chicken? I really don't know what to think about this place, I have very mix reviews.The ambiance is great, and the service, however, the food was mediocre.I have been there more than 5 times and the food was good before. but the last time I was very disappointed. I suggest you order no, no, no with a side of absolutely NO. I just did a take out order of shrimp fried rice along with some other items. When I got home and opened up the box of rice...it was the fishiest FISHY smelling shrimp I've ever smelled. My stomach turned immediately. The shrimp were packed into the top of the box of the rice so immediately I'm wondering was the shrimp ever fried?? These have to be frozen shrimp that they thawed and heated and stuffed into the box. No fresh shrimp could possibly smell like that. I threw away the entire order. How have I lived in downtown Raleigh for over 2 years and JUST learn of this place??? I went for a friend's birthday party - they'd reserved the upstairs section. They offered a variety of apps for sharing for the party. While they all looked amazing, as a vegetarian, there were few options for me so I decided to order off the menu. I chose the tofu bokchoy. OMG - it was so delcious!! I can't wait to go back and sit downstairs and order a full meal off the menu. The only 'tiny' complaint I have is their wine list. With such amazing food options, some of which are spicy, there's a realy opportunity for great wine pairings....it's lacking, however the cocktail menu is great and the food is out of this world. Five Star has been bookmarked on my Yelp account for awhile but for some reason, I kept pushing it to the bottom. Well, finally, on Friday night the husband and I tried it out! I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. It was First Friday and we arrived at about 6:45, just in time for select $5 appetizers. We started with the heat seeker shrimp and chicken lettuce wraps. Both were very good. For the entree, we split the crispy sesame beef. I highly recommend this dish. The prices were great and we still had leftovers (even with splitting). Also, our service was some of the best I've received in awhile. My only complaint is that everything came out very quickly (I'm weird, most people probably prefer this) but it was date night and I like to chat and sip on wine over a long dinner and we were in and out in a flash. Once for takeout, once dining in. First time we ate there. We had the beef noodles and crab wontons. Both were great and we really enjoyed it. I loved the noodles - lots of flavor and a big portion. Service was good and pretty fast, even though we sat outside. Decent wine selection, but not great. I would have given this experience 4-5 stars. Second time, we got takeout. I know takeout is not always as good as eating there, but this was just not good, even by takeout standards. We had the general's chicken and heat seeker shrimp. The chicken had a really weak, thin sauce without much flavor and the chicken itself was really dry and overcooked. The heat seeker shrimp was better, but not much. It had a weird texture on the outside and was not spicy at all. Not worth it. You would think this item would be better since its their domain name, but I guess not. We'll probably try it one more time before totally giving up on it - especially on Wednesday night when they have 1/2 price appetizers. read more

I've had several meals at 5 star over the last year. The food is always great, best Chinese I've had. The feel of the restaurant is great whether we go early or late. Definitely a great spot for Chinese in downtown Raleigh or probably anywhere in the city. Great space and atmosphere as well. Staff is courteous and provides good solid service. We went during hopscotch/ first Friday and it was definitely packed. We had spring rolls (slightly greasy but overall good) and dumplings. I didn't have the dumplings but I was told they were exceptional. We had chicken fried rice and generals chicken. The chicken fried rice was probably the best I've had but I wish it had a few veggies in it. It's just rice and chicken, but the chicken was cooked perfectly. Also tried the generals chicken and I actually liked it better than the fried rice. Can't wait to go back. Prices for one entree are in the $12-20 range but are worth it. Portion sizes are crazy huge. We've been here before and need to come back more often. 4-5 star range for me. read more

I have never had a bad meal or bad experience here. I can't say enough about the food, the atmosphere, or the service. I wish they would rent the loft out for private parties and provide a bartender- they'd never get rid of me. I have heard other speak negatively about the parking but I consider it novelty and part of the experience. If Five Star was just a mediocre establishment I would not park around the corner, hey...it IS Fiver Star after all. Park on the street and take a very short walk. It's worth it. read more
