This place. THIS PLACE! I don't know how I lucked into having two good Chinese restaurants this close together, but I am honestly not going to question it. First, this place has the best egg rolls I've tasted in the past 10 years. Crispy. Delicious. No extra residual grease or oil, and perfect spicing. Second, everything here is a cut above the other Chinese restaurants in the take-out category, and will unfortunately lower my previous favorite to a four star, on update. Third (And this is best part): They offer off-menu specials (like sauced wings), Thai dishes (like pad thai, and spicy basil with chicken), and Hibachi Steak and Chicken! All the good stuff in one stop. I ordered my usual test: Sesame Chicken platter with fried rice and egg roll. Fried Dumplings. And a side order of egg rolls. A couple things will hit you here, the first being the rice... It's cooked perfectly, and unlike any other you've had in the area: Soft, flavorful, with a bit of oil from cooking that makes it even more flavorful, but still NOT GREASY. There's some left-handed magic going on here, and I don't care to know how they obtained the secret. It'sdelicious. The sauce on the sesame chicken was light and flavorful, while keeping the chicken crispy.... And it didn't turn into gum after the chicken cooled. The dumplings were lightly fried, and sauced with what I think was a sweet and sour/fish sauce blend with scallions. Amazing. Not the usual dark, soy sauced based dipping ingredients. The egg rolls: I mentioned them earlier. 10 out of 10. The true test - LEFTOVERS. Ate all of these the next day, after overnight refrigeration. The egg rolls were still crispy, without tasting like rancid oil. Sesame chicken was still fantastic, as were the dumplings. Bottom Line: Get down here. I'm going to try as much as I can afford. The new King of East Coast Chinese takeout (and possibly other Asian foods --- Finger's crossed) in the area. Extra: I noticed something on the menu called "mambo sauce", which is evidently a favorite in D.C. restaurants. They offer it on wings, on shrimp, on everything imaginable. And in talking with the owners, I found out that they are from D.C. And my love for D.C. (and the sadly closed Mr. Chen's Organic Chinese) is well known. Praise Jesus! I'm giving two stars based on transactions because food is great but why was my card charged more than the actual bill. If I want to tip I will but don't be adding money when it's definitely not warranted. This is called fraud please don't do it again and all be cautious to look at what you're actually paying for but from now on I'll just use cash! read more

Spent $50 for dinner tonight. Chicken chow mein, qt of hot and sour soup, crab Rangoon and pu- pu platter. There was one small bag of noodles for soup and chow mein. No sauces at all. Here's what the pu-pu platter came with: mushy tempura shrimp, meat wontons, chicken sticks, 2 ribs, 2 rolls, 2 chicken wings. Photo below indicates what I ordered and didn't receive. When I called the store to let them know about the problems, the woman I spoke to insisted that they didn't post the menu as I had ordered it. Below is the picture from their website. After ten months I once again ordered egg foo young take out. However, this time I got it with vegetables. Was disappointed to discover the only vegetable was onions. Guess my cravings for some Chinese vegetables will not be satisfied today. Meal was hot and fresh. Combo went up 20% in price since last visit. Veggies would have added a star to this review. This is my go to Chinese restaurant that reminds me of the northeast. I always get the C2 which is a combination place that has steak, onions, green peppers and rice. Their egg roll is really good that I order more since they are that good. I have tried other Chinese food restaurant but this one brings me back when I use to live in Massachusetts. Tried them out again today. Mumbo Wings and the MooGooGaiPan Combo with pork fried rice. Note to self: Always get the wings with the sauce on the side. The eggroll was delicious but I would have liked to have seen more meat in it. The wings were delicious. The MooGooGaiPan was good. Loved the fresh vegetables and sauce was yummy. I ordered Hunan Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken because I couldn't decide. I tried some of both and they're really good. Went today and ordered Beef & Broccoli, and a rib appetizer. Having recently moved just up the road, I was really hoping the food would be good. Unfortunately, the beef and broccoli was so salty, I a ate only a few bites. The rice was way over cooked and was almost mushy. The ribs looked great but really had no flavor to speak of. The restaurant was clean and the staff was very friendly. I really wish the food was better. It wasn't very busy but maybe I caught them at a bad time, I don't know, but I won't be back. read more

The atmosphere is dry, but what I ordered was great. I ordered the shrimp egg fu yung, crab ragoon, shrimp pai thai, house fried rice, and egg rolls. Egg fu yung awesome, shrimp pa thai was grood and not too spicy but flavorable, noodle could be larger. I love their house rice with peas, carrots, onion and all three meats, state egg, and shrimp egg rolls was cook nicely crispy and filling. I have never sat in, but always called in. I call way ahead because there is all ways a wait. Please be prepared for it. But the food is good. This place had taken me back when i first started eating great food like this. I found China Star through DoorDash. I decided to give them a try. My first time ordering we got the dragon and phoenix which is half general tso's chicken and half seafood in a white sauce. Chicken was good but spicy and hot something I can't eat. When they say hot and spicy they mean it! However, the seafood was fishy and not good at all. It went in the trash. My husband got the four seasons which he liked, but didn't love. We also ordered the crispy potstickers which were really good and the dipping sauce was amazing! Two spring rolls, crispy and not greasy, and 2 egg rolls typical taste. Overall for what it costed it wasn't worth it to me. However, my husband loves spicy food and finished my general tso's chicken and fell in love with it. We ordered again from there and I got the bourbon street chicken which was ok, sauce was thin and kind of underwhelming. Hubbs got the General Tso and ate every bit. Will we order again? yeah, but I need to find my go to dish like my husband has, so far none have hit the mark with me. so 4 stars because my husband liked it and the egg rolls were good. read more

Found this place because I was tired of all the other Chinese restaurants in Raleigh. There's always those special Chinese restaurants that make their food a little different than the rest, This is one of those places. China Star has the typical items most other Chinese restaurants have but with a their own flare to it. The shining dish here is the crispy garlic chicken. First time trying China Star. We ordered Cashew Chicken, Mumbo Wings, Crab Rangoon, Egg Rolls and a quart of Egg Drop Wonton Soup. The Cashew Chicken had more celery than cashews, but it was good. The rice that came with the order was good. I tried to order the Mumbo Wings with sauce on the side (as other reviewers suggested), but I was told that would be $1.00 extra. Not wanting to pay extra, I got the wings sauced. They were good, but really messy. Some of the wings were large and others were incredibly small. I would not order them again because of the inconsistency in size. The Crab Rangoon were good, cooked perfectly and the filling was just right. The Egg Rolls were another story. They were the smallest egg rolls I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant. Even smaller than spring rolls. For the price they charged, 2-3 of these should have constituted an order. I would not recommend wasting your money on them. The soup was good, but had only three dumplings and one very small bag of fried noodles. I expected at least 4 dumplings and two bags of fried noodles for a a quart of soup. Will we go back again, maybe. I'll need to try other places in the neighborhood before giving them a second chance. read more

I went there for the first time last week. I got two egg rolls, moo goo gai pan, wanton soup and four chicken wings. The food was good but it didn't really stand out from the typical Chinese restaurants like Wang's, both serving pretty much the same items on their menu. I did enjoy the flavor of the mggp. The vegetables we're not flimsy and there was an even mixture of onions, chicken, celery, and mushrooms. The white sauce was flavorful and blended well with my white rice. I did notice one thing I didn't care for. As I waited for my order, I see a big cardboard box of wonton noodles sitting under the table completely exposed. Anything could get in that open box. We were looking for a new place and I yelped Chinese and this came up. Decided to drive a few extra minutes to get there. Place was spotless and food was delicious. We ate in and they brought out each plate as it finished so everything was nice and hot.. each item followed right behind so there was not any wait.
