On October 1st, I went to Jamaica Bites for lunch and ordered the large Curry Chicken plate with a side of plantains. Unfortunately, the plantains tasted old, were overly firm, and cut into large chunks. I called the restaurant and spoke with the owner, who said the only option was to return them so he could prepare a fresh batch. I explained I was on my lunch break and asked for a credit instead--he refused. That was my last visit. The restaurant also needs to address the stained ceiling and poor lighting, which make the space feel uninviting.

Stopped here on a whim, the food was really good. Hot and fresh jerk chicken. The people were super nice and welcoming and the place was clean! Will definitely go back!

Mmmm everything was so tasty and the portions were huge! I am still dreaming of that jerk chicken. I would honestly say it's the best one I've had - it was smoky, flavorful, and if you get the spicy sauce, super spicy! The veg stew was also fantastic. I love that your entrees come with cabbage, plantains, and a choice of rice. Get the Callaloo rice and you won't regret it. I think I will be getting that every time I go. Rum raisin cheesecake was a dessert that they had available the day that we came so naturally we had to try it. It was a bit heavy on the rum for my preference but my husband was raving about it! Definitely check them out if you're in the area.

Good taste. A bit pricey dinner prices. Reasonable lunch special prices. Quick service.

The jerk chicken is delicious! It has a smoked taste and a little kick! This was our first visit and will continue to be a regular customer!

The lamb was tender and melted off the bone, the fufu was soft and hearty, and the plantains were scrumptious. We made the trek from the north side of town over and it was worth it. The place is immaculately clean and the menu is an extensive list of cuisine from all over the world. From Jamaica to Ghana and place in between. I know this could be a difficult balance to strike, but it was done well. I ordered the oxtails with rice and peace and plantains. The order was a nice size but I do feel the oxtails portion could have been bigger. Lots of sauce but not a lot of meat. The seasoning on it was very well done. Spicy but not too spicy. Well balanced. I enjoyed it along with my well portioned sides. The person with me got jollof rice and chicken. They said the rice was good and the grilled onion on top of the chicken was perfect. The chicken wasn't to their personal taste but looked well portioned and prepared. They also had a variety of bottled drinks to choose from like mango and hibiscus drinks. I would go back.

The sandwich itself was okay. Was very salty and the flavor seemed off slightly but overall decent. The yuca fries were a good choice with the dipping sauce that comes with it. The space inside is spacious with plenty of seats when we went. The staff is friendly and helpful with any questions you may have. You can also order online to go. For parking, you can park on the street or deck parking. Prices were slightly higher than expected but appropriate for downtown Durham. Overall, a cool restaurant with a variety of options. Unsure if I will come back but recommend trying it if you are in the area.

Started with the pernil mallorca melt... mouthwatering pork roast, slow-cooked & fork tender, on sweet-ish mallorca bread with melted cheese and a spoonful or two of the pork juices. Excellent. Next, a Cuban sandwich. The same pork roast, this time with as slice of ham, Swiss cheese and sliced pickles, slathered with mustard on pressed mallorca bread. A great rendition of a Tampa-style Cuban but missing that Cuban bread. Also tried a trio of empanadas. The beef is a hearty mix of chunky beef, well spiced, juicy and tender. The chicken is chunks of white meat, with slivers of carrots and other vegetables. A little more bland than the beef, but still flavorful, moist and tender. Each was ensconsed in a traditional half moon pastry and fried deep, golden brown. Not at all greasy, these were crunchy, savory and delicious. Honorable mention to the s'mores empanada. The same half moon pastry, stuffed with chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker, then deep fried. WAY better than your standard cookout s'mores; these were decadent and sweet. The perfect dessert to top off the meal. Be on the lookout for this food truck. Really good food - fresh and delicious.

The…read morefood truck stopped by my wife's workplace in Chapel Hill so she picked up lunch for us and brought it home. It was a nice treat. I had a three-compartment takeout box that consisted of Jerk Chicken and "Jerkaque" Chicken on top of rice and beans plus sides of stir-fried cabbage and sweet fried plantains. Everything was tasty and satisfying. The standard entrees on the menu come with rice and beans and one side for $8. This double entree and two side meal cost $12 before tax and tip. It's not on the menu. You can ask Virgil about it. Chef Virgil, who was born in Jamaica, has been operating this food truck with his wife, Taffee, in the Triangle since June 2013. The "Jerkaque" or "Jerk-a-que" chicken is unique to the chef, a combination of sweet Carolina BBQ sauce and spicy jerk sauce. I enjoyed both the Jerk Chicken and Jerkaque Chicken equally. I got half dark meat and half white meat. Overall, the chicken was seasoned and cooked well. The meat was tender and flavorful. It also had a nice kick to it. A lot of jerk chicken isn't prepared spicy enough for me. Virgil's got the spice level right. It was good. The rice and beans were extra tasty because they were sitting beneath the chicken, soaking up the wonderful sauce, seasonings, and juices. I'm a big fan of both Caribbean cabbage and sweet fried plantains and Virgil's versions of both hit the spot. The cabbage was stir-fried with carrots and onions. It tasted fresh, savory, and delectable. The plantains had an appetizing texture and were addictively sweet, almost like a dessert. In addition to the items I tried above, the menu featured Curry Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken, and Vegetarian Platter entrees ($8 each) plus Jamaican beef patties ($3 each), and coco bread ($2 each). More items were listed on the online menu on Virgil's Jamaica website at https://virgilsjamaica1.com/. They do catering and events too. The food truck - technically, a trailer - looked weathered, like a trailer that's been well-used since 2013. There's a story about the three generations of chefs that Virgil is a part of posted on the side of the trailer. My wife said service was great. The food came out quick. At the time of her visit, it was a one-man show (Virgil). She said he was really nice. Payments were handled via Square. An itemized receipt was automatically emailed to the address associated with the card used for payment.
