We had lunch from Virgil's Jamaica Jamaican food truck and we thought the food was delicious. The food truck stopped by my wife's workplace in Chapel Hill so she picked up lunch for us and brought it home. It was a nice treat. I had a three-compartment takeout box that consisted of Jerk Chicken and "Jerkaque" Chicken on top of rice and beans plus sides of stir-fried cabbage and sweet fried plantains. Everything was tasty and satisfying. The standard entrees on the menu come with rice and beans and one side for $8. This double entree and two side meal cost $12 before tax and tip. It's not on the menu. You can ask Virgil about it. Chef Virgil, who was born in Jamaica, has been operating this food truck with his wife, Taffee, in the Triangle since June 2013. The "Jerkaque" or "Jerk-a-que" chicken is unique to the chef, a combination of sweet Carolina BBQ sauce and spicy jerk sauce. I enjoyed both the Jerk Chicken and Jerkaque Chicken equally. I got half dark meat and half white meat. Overall, the chicken was seasoned and cooked well. The meat was tender and flavorful. It also had a nice kick to it. A lot of jerk chicken isn't prepared spicy enough for me. Virgil's got the spice level right. It was good. The rice and beans were extra tasty because they were sitting beneath the chicken, soaking up the wonderful sauce, seasonings, and juices. I'm a big fan of both Caribbean cabbage and sweet fried plantains and Virgil's versions of both hit the spot. The cabbage was stir-fried with carrots and onions. It tasted fresh, savory, and delectable. The plantains had an appetizing texture and were addictively sweet, almost like a dessert. In addition to the items I tried above, the menu featured Curry Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken, and Vegetarian Platter entrees ($8 each) plus Jamaican beef patties ($3 each), and coco bread ($2 each). The food truck - technically, a trailer - looked weathered, like a trailer that's been well-used since 2013. There's a story about the three generations of chefs that Virgil is a part of posted on the side of the trailer. My wife said service was great. The food came out quick. At the time of her visit, it was a one-man show (Virgil). She said he was really nice. Payments were handled via Square. This was the worst Jamaican food I ever had. The Jerk chicken was boiled not grilled then covered with some sort of tatesless sauce that seemed to be watered down not to mention the rice and peas was so sweet it should have been listed as a dessert. Don't waste your money. Please go to where is the Jerk for real authentic Jamaican food. This don't deserve a star. read more

Our subdivision has been having Food Truck Tuesday & this week it was Virgil's Jamaican. Delicious Jamaican food from this local food truck. Tried the jerk chicken with several of the sides. Chicken is oven baked, 2 pieces to the serving, slathered with traditional jerk spices. Enough heat to wake up your taste buds... very tasty. The chicken is served over a bed of white rice and beans. The beans are highlighted with the same jerk spices. The stir fried cabbage, onion and carrot was delicious. Nice al dente veggies in a buttery melange. The fried plantains, one of my favorites, were excellent-sweet and sticky. Next time you see this food truck, stop & give them a try. Good stuff! read more

Absolutely awful Jamaican food, and absolutely awful food period. Really glad we drove from Greensboro down to Tanger Outlets in Mebane for this hot garbage. I went for the jerk chicken because I love spicy food and a true jerk is really blazing hot. This was just a plain baked chicken thigh and when she handed it to me I just stared at it. She realized it was supposed to be "jerk chicken", pulled it back and poured sauce over it from a bottle, and that ain't jerk chicken, just a jerk move. The sauce had zero heat and the chicken was completely plain otherwise. The sides were rice & bean and fried plantains. The plantains were burnt to the point of being inedible and stone cold. The rice was so hard and crunchy that I wasn't even sure it had been cooked, but since there were some soft grains in the middle of the pile, it was obviously cooked then microwaved to an untimely death to reheat it. For Food Truck Rodeo Tuesday I decided to try Virgil's Jamaica. I went with the Jerkaque Chicken served with rice and beans and for my side the fried sweet plantains. I thought this was a good choice since the sauce was a mix of jerk and sweet barbeque sauce so it was not spicy. I got there right when it started so I was disappointed to hear that they were already sold out of Coco bread. $8 for a meal that filled me up is not bad for a food truck and the line moved quickly so that was a plus. Unfortunately the chicken was flavorless and a bit dry and there were not many beans in the rice. As far as the plantains went, the smaller ones were fried to a crisp but the larger ones were cooked well and tasted delicious. I was excited to try this truck with my sister who is a huge jamaican food fan. We waited in line for what seemed like forever just to place our order. We then waited for another hour or so to receive our food. We actually ended up leaving to go get food from another truck and even after leaving the truck, ordering from another and coming back our food still wasn't ready. Once we finally received our food, we sat down to try the jerk chicken combo with plantains, rice and peas and cabbage. I was awfully disappointed. The chicken was alright. The skin was tasty, but past that, the chicken was terribly dry and unflavorful. The rice was nothing to write home about and the plantains were a little on the hard side and could have been a little sweeter. We decided to try their Jerk Chicken plate today on their stop at Tanger outlets . I was super disappointed that their food was below sub par and the wait time was about 25 minutes to get it. For $8 we had a single chicken thigh thats hard as rock and one sweet plantain . Rice and beans were plain bad . Food truck was at the office today and it was not very good. I ordered jerk chicken with rice, black beans, and sweet plantains with beef patty on the side. Jerk Chicken was barely a portion and one peice was almost all bones no meat. In regards to flavor, what I did taste has the potential to be good. Rice and beans was just white rice with literally 5 single beans not even a good spoon full with bean juice so that was disappointing. The beef patty and the sweet plantains were just okay. The whole meal cost me about $11. Unless they make some serious changes I would not recommend eating here. Need to have bigger portions and better quality food. read more

Virgil's food truck came to our office recently, and I got to try it out for the first time. I got the "jerk-a-que" chicken, which is supposed to be some hybrid between jerk and bbq chicken. I didn't think it was all the flavorful, and the rice/beans were pretty bland as well. My friend got a vegetarian dish and his "rice and beans" side was more like "rice and one bean". He was very disappointed. With all the great food trucks in the Triangle, I probably won't be going here again. read more

I love Caribbean food. Growing up in the deep South, plenty of spicy and savory foods were available throughout the region. I do not make this review lightly or without some experience with this type of food. I had the Jerk chicken with rice and plantians. Nothing about this meal was up to my expectations. The rice was plain white rice - not yellow - without any vegetables. The chicken was a little dry. Instead if deep jerk flavor, it tasted more like plain roasted chicken with some typical hot sauce dashed on top right before serving. The meal didn't come with any beans or vegetables either. Lastly, the plantains were small, burnt and very soggy. I would not recommend you try this food truck, especially with other great options in the area. read more

This was one of my most disappointing food truck experiences. I stopped by at the last Raleigh Downtown Food Truck Rodeo. Because this tuck seems to mainly go to special events, I didn't want to waste a chance, so I decided to wait in the very long line. And I waited and waited. This is probably my 10th food truck rodeo, so I'm very familiar with slow-moving lines. Never have I had to wait 45 minutes--and all of the food in the truck was premade! They were just serving it, and incredibly slowly. I honestly can't express how slowly the line moved. It took 15 minutes for the two couples and one three-person family in front of me to order their food and take it away. I waited over 50 minutes in total. And when I got to the front, the service was slow and not very friendly. Then, when I get to the front, it turns out that they're out of a lot of things, that they didn't even attempt to mark on the menu, unlike the other food trucks. So, all of the dishes come with either cabbage and rice or plantains, and they were out of plantains. Fine. I asked if I could pay less and just get the chicken without the cabbage and rice--no. Okay, fine. $8 for two small pieces of bone-in chicken and a lot of rice and some cabbage and rice. The chicken was quite tasty--especially the sauce on it. But it was really, really greasy and fatty, so I ended up throwing a good portion of it away. And some pieces of the rice were hard/crunchy (undercooked?). The highlight was the cabbage--it was perfectly cooked and wonderfully seasoned. Overall, the food was pretty good but not worth the experience. I tried Virgil's for the first time at the Durham food truck rodeo. My biggest complaint at food truck rodeos are the slow moving lines and I found the line at Virgil's to move really quickly. While I found the jerkaque chicken to be very well seasoned (although a bit dry), the sides were actually my favorite part of the meal. Rolled up at this food truck in a company parking lot and we had the jerk chicken. No part of that chicken was jerk it was more like brown stew chicken with a jerk sauce on top of it. I have been eating Jamaican cuisine for my entire life. My favorite dish in the world is ox tail, so I was excited to see Virgil's Jamaican truck come to our Food Truck weekly event. This was the first time I've ever eaten from Virgil's. I showed up early, which I suggest because the line was already long. I ordered the curry chicken, with the sweet plantains and an order of coco bread. It is flavorful, hot, and filling. The plantains were sweet and caramelized. The coco bread was dense and sweet. This tastes as good as any other Jamaican cuisine I have ever eaten. Both truck employees were warm and funny and gracious. Virgil's Jamaica brought their truck to our office this past Wednesday. I usually try to support these trucks when they come in, so I headed out for a bit. I tried the beef patty and a side of plantains. The food was really tasty, but the quantity of the side of plantains really didn't justify the $3 charge. Still, I rated the business 1 extra star because of the EXCELLENT attitude and friendliness of the folks running the truck (presumably the owner and his wife). He was very friendly and seemed to be concerned about helping customers make the right selection for something that they would be pleased with. Overall, it was a good snack, but a little light for a full lunch. Next time I will probably try one of the various combo plates that they have available. read more

Visited the food truck at the raleigh rodeo. Any white person in line was either not served, served very slowly or served incorrectly. I watched as the food I ordered was scooped out of pre made bins and served to non white people while I waited 20 minutes for the same order. I was glared at for asking if the third order that went out while I watch was mine. Then I was handed bread when I had ordered 2 full plates with sides and paying and tipping well. Finally at 1:15 when the line and wait became reasonable I got on line and was 5th. But they were out of chicken. Now serving only beef patties which also, for some reason took 10 minutes from order to delivery. No idea how the food is... I was not sure after reading other reviews and comments if I would like this food truck, still, decided to give it a go. They were scheduled to be at the parking lot of my office between 11:30-1 pm or so. And after deciding not to bring lunch and to try their (questionable quality for prices) menu, I discovered that they are also unreliable. Food truck never showed up. How disappointing. Yum! Love this food truck. I don't get to enjoy them often but I did sure today. I had the curry chicken with rice/peas and Rasta pasta. I got a ton of food for $11! The chicken was delicious - dark meat skin on bone in and slow cooked in West Indies curry seasoning. Rasta pasta is Mac and cheese with jerk seasoning in it. Great idea! The owner is very friendly. Unfortunately the meat portion of the curry and stewed chicken was very tiny and the meat was dry. My wife agreed and said she's not sure if she'd eat it if it was free. So let me start with I came home and created a yelp account just to leave this review! I've loved Virgil's since I discovered them a little over a year ago, since then I have followed them and anytime they are near me I head to find them! Tonight I found out they were at triangle town center so we headed that way, it started storming. I assumed the event would be cancelled but when we got there I found the owner and his daughter standing under the awning. I decided to speak, knowing they were probably closed, the event had in fact been cancelled and they were in the process of cleaning up. I told him how much I loved their food and how disappointed I was that I hadn't made it. I fully expected to have to eat mall food, I was so surprised when he actually said he would make me a plate even though they weren't serving food anymore. We talked while they made my plate, they told me when they'd be close again (the day before my birthday! Not that this part is important lol). I knew their food was great but I had no idea their family was just as wonderful! From now on I will bypass every other food truck and head straight to them every time! The curry chicken is the best! (The jerk chicken is great too). I love that they went above and beyond and made me feel like I was their #1 customer even though they didn't know me from anyone else waking around. The food truck came out to West Village in Durham and I was sooo hungry. I purchased curry chicken which was more like roasted chicken with gobs of curry paste thrown on top. The rice tasted like overcooked Comet rice. The coco bread was hard as a rock. All in all it was just yucky. Don't waste your money or time standing in line. read more

I was so excited to get a Jamaican Beef Patti. Got to the front of the line and ordered 2! ...at $3 a piece. That's $6! Then I stood there on the side and watched them take out a box ( same box found at Walmart where you can get 2 in a box for like $2, or $3) and took out frozen (still in the wrapper) beef patties and warm it up in the microwave!!!!!
