a meal in a styrofoam container
    Jenn V.

Years ago a friend from the Barbados made me curry chicken as a meal after I had surgery. I haven't been able to replicate that meal or find a place that matched it. Until now...Levy's Jerkstand at North State Food Hall in Selma! I got the cabbage and rice & beans as my two sides. Best cabbage ever! This meal made my heart happy. I will definitely be back!

The beef patties were very tasty and filled. I didn't try anything else, but it all smelled fantastic.

Food Truck Time: Caribbean Kicker at HollyFest in Holly Springs…read more I tried this food truck at an event and it took a total of 50 minutes from the line to order to receive my food (the majority of time waiting was to get my food). I ordered the Island Shrimp Bowl. It was rice and shrimp with a sauce and seasoning, I wanted more ingredients to the bowl than that. It was good but there was too much rice to the other ingredients and the shrimp were a tad overcooked. The main driver behind my review outside of the basic bowl is the wait time, my husband visited two food trucks and returned before I got my food.

I ordered a Caribbean shrimp quesadilla, a jerk chicken eggroll, and a strawberry lemonade. The quesadilla was good. The shrimp was cooked nice but there wasn't a lot of volume to this quesadilla. Just cheese and shrimp, not a whole lot of flavor for me. All quesadillas are served with chips and queso, big bonus for me! Then the eggroll, these things are MASSIVE! An eggroll stuffed with Cabbage and jerk chicken, wooo these things packed some heat but they were delicious. I split the eggroll with a friend of mine who couldn't stop raving about the jerk chicken quesadilla and the eggroll. I gotta say, if you're looking for some delicious jerk chicken or Caribbean food, give this food truck a try!

I selected my two side choices, which were mac and cheese and collard greens. Despite the price that was listed on the overhead menu for the snack selection, which included two sides, I was told I had to pay an upcharge of $3.00 for the mac and cheese. I did not want to argue about something that I felt was unfair and inappropriate. What made the situation really disturbing was that the overcharged mac and cheese was ruined because it was placed and mixed with the oxtail meat and oxtail juices. This situation led to a decline in the food's quality, which did not meet my expectations. The presentation of the small snack container was very unappealing because the three food choices were squished together in a tiny container. My total charge for the small, tight, thin oxtails and two sides snack was not at all worth the $20.00 I was charged. The quality of the oxtails was a real disappointment that needs major improvement. I was expecting much better quality, and I would not recommend this food location based on my recent visit.

We had lunch from Virgil's Jamaica Jamaican food truck and we thought the food was delicious. The…read morefood truck stopped by my wife's workplace in Chapel Hill so she picked up lunch for us and brought it home. It was a nice treat. I had a three-compartment takeout box that consisted of Jerk Chicken and "Jerkaque" Chicken on top of rice and beans plus sides of stir-fried cabbage and sweet fried plantains. Everything was tasty and satisfying. The standard entrees on the menu come with rice and beans and one side for $8. This double entree and two side meal cost $12 before tax and tip. It's not on the menu. You can ask Virgil about it. Chef Virgil, who was born in Jamaica, has been operating this food truck with his wife, Taffee, in the Triangle since June 2013. The "Jerkaque" or "Jerk-a-que" chicken is unique to the chef, a combination of sweet Carolina BBQ sauce and spicy jerk sauce. I enjoyed both the Jerk Chicken and Jerkaque Chicken equally. I got half dark meat and half white meat. Overall, the chicken was seasoned and cooked well. The meat was tender and flavorful. It also had a nice kick to it. A lot of jerk chicken isn't prepared spicy enough for me. Virgil's got the spice level right. It was good. The rice and beans were extra tasty because they were sitting beneath the chicken, soaking up the wonderful sauce, seasonings, and juices. I'm a big fan of both Caribbean cabbage and sweet fried plantains and Virgil's versions of both hit the spot. The cabbage was stir-fried with carrots and onions. It tasted fresh, savory, and delectable. The plantains had an appetizing texture and were addictively sweet, almost like a dessert. In addition to the items I tried above, the menu featured Curry Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken, and Vegetarian Platter entrees ($8 each) plus Jamaican beef patties ($3 each), and coco bread ($2 each). More items were listed on the online menu on Virgil's Jamaica website at https://virgilsjamaica1.com/. They do catering and events too. The food truck - technically, a trailer - looked weathered, like a trailer that's been well-used since 2013. There's a story about the three generations of chefs that Virgil is a part of posted on the side of the trailer. My wife said service was great. The food came out quick. At the time of her visit, it was a one-man show (Virgil). She said he was really nice. Payments were handled via Square. An itemized receipt was automatically emailed to the address associated with the card used for payment.
