This spot is what most would call a hidden gem. Honestly, if it weren't for TikTok, I probably never would've found it. The vibe isn't anything fancy--it's tucked away on the more overlooked side of Raleigh--but the staff were so kind and even thanked us for coming in. I ordered the $12 catfish plate with mac and cheese, yams, and an extra side of collard greens. The mac and cheese was definitely the standout of the meal! The fish was just okay--it didn't taste as fresh as I hoped--and the greens had a bit of grit to them. Overall, I'd give it a solid 7/10, and I'd go back to try a few other dishes!

Pork chops, Mac n cheese, yams & my homemade cornbread

Environment: In the hood Ambiance: A nostalgic mom and pop store Service: I was greeted promptly upon entry from the owners as well as the kitchen staff; placed my order which took about 10-15 minutes to prepare; the kitchen attendant verified my receipt and handed me my food Food: The sides taste rather bland seemingly as though they were canned selections with little to no seasonings on them. I had the Casamigo chili-lime wings with Mac n cheese w/ cabbage, however, I didn't taste any chili, lime or liquor! My wife had pork chops, yams and mac n cheese! She agreed with me on the taste and origins of the side dishes. The Mac tasted like commercial Kraft and definitely not worth a second taste! We also had some "Sticky Ribs" which in my opinion were a waste of money as they were tiny bones drenched in BBQ sauce; If you need this much sauce on the meat; it obviously aint hitting on nothing! I made some homemade honey-butter cornbread as the attendant told me that they didn't have any cornbread yesterday! My cornbread resembled and tasted like honeybun cake! Price: $50/ 3 meals; Highly affordable single or family selections Overall: The business is easy to get to... parking is very limited as this business shares a small lot with another business. Curiosity for mini mart/gas station food prompted my visit. I might visit again just to see what the Carribean selections hit for, but this is not a choice that I would ever break my neck to scramble to like the "HOT" light on a Krispy Kreme! "A whole lotta bark with a nibble!" All employees were very well-mannered and I appreciate the southern hospitality!

When I say that he puts his foot in this food EVERY time.. I mean it. The wings are crispy and fresh. I had the lemon pepper wings with yams and Mac & cheese. My daughter had the chicken and waffles and loved. I am back at it again today to order some more. The service is awesome and it's a quick fix when you are hungry.

This place is an absolute hit Jim located in a convenience store maybe the best soul food I've had in 10 years.

I believe this restaurant gets a strong 4.5 stars. If i was going off taste alone this restaurant would be 5 stars. We had the pork chop plate with rice and beans and cabbage, a catfish plate with mac and cheese and collards greens, and the oxtail tacos. Our favorite dishes were the oxtail tacos, followed by the mac and cheese and then the porkchops. All the rest of the food was above the average except the rice and beans. They lacked flavor and was probably the only side that was below average. All three meals came out to $49 dollars. As usual the oxtail dishes are quite a bit more expensive than the rest of the dishes, which s understood with oxtail pricing Which is about 16 dollars a meal. I bring this up because my wife and I were able to eat all 3 meals, and we still had room for more. Basically if I have a large appetite not sure one of their meals would satisfy that urge. The only negative that I have is that they do not always have the full menu. We wanted the oxtail pasta but they didn't have it that day. I would consider calling up there if there is a specific dish you want, to make sure they have it in. Overall, this a a very good soul food restaurant selling out high quality food our a a non-descript corner store. The food was good enough that I will be back to try the oxtail pasta, as it is now on my list of dishes i want to try in Raleigh.

The food was amazing and we didn't have any complaints. Some times the small places that you least expect to be good delivers every time! Go support!!!

Great food and service! All the orders looked great. It's nestled in a Urban environment but still worth it

Sticky Ribs (great), Yams (ABSOLUTELY AMAZING) & Collards (Really good)!

Dinner was served family style, each course timed perfectly. We ate thru NC BBQ, chicken, deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, brisket, greens, mac & cheese, carrot cake and double chocolate cake. Our server Billy was fantastic and nothing fazed him. Special orders, drinks, the entire evening he made look easy (and we know how hard he worked). The Pit enabled a wonderful evening - thanks to all the crew at The Pit that made it special.

The sampler has wings, pimento cheese balls, soul rolls and southern style deviled eggs. The wings had a good flavor to them very traditional bbq style taste, the cheese balls were right up my alley crunchy outside and gooey on the inside. My first time trying deviled eggs I can say they were actually pleasant. The soul roll had this good taste with a subtle head to it just to spice it up. Overall really enjoyable apps. With so many options to choose from we all ended up getting the Double combo. I had Brisket and bbq chicken with Mac n cheese, brussel sprouts and. Sweet potatoe casserole. The chicken was the only piece lacking in comparison to the others. The brisket was very solid, very good enough to order again. The sides however were amazing. The Mac and cheese had such a good taste to it, the brussel sprouts had a blend with bacon bits and something glazed on them that was perfect and the sweet potatoes was another great side addition to the rest. Service was great our waiter gave us suggestions and was very patient with us and even gave us some small servings on the house. Very great time in a place you should visit

The place was crowded but there was no wait. I got seated immediately at a table near a column in the middle of the restaurant and Christy came over and asked if I wanted anything to drink. She brought me iced water and gave me time to look at the menu. I wanted to try so many things and I was too optimistic about ordering 3 things and finishing them myself. Good thing I only ordered 2 things! An order of fried catfish with home fries and one egg. And a biscuit with sausage gravy. The fried catfish was salted and well fried. It tasted delicious for my first bite! The home fries were basically cut potatoes, but they weren't very fried or flavored. I wished I ordered the side of apple sauce instead. The biscuit and sausage was good, but a bit too much for one person after eating a separate order already. Definitely bring more people so you can try more things. Also, I wished I had asked for sausage gravy on the side so I can try the biscuit on its own first as well. Furthermore, I would have more time to eat the catfish so I wasn't worried about the biscuit getting soggy. Christy came to check up on me every now and then. The place was buzzing with people and decorations so I didn't feel so alone. When it was time to pay, Christy brought me the check for me to pay at the cash register. Both Christy and the cashier were so friendly! The restaurant does have a women's and a mens restroom if needed.

On my first visit, I ordered the hamburger steak with rice, along with mac and cheese and green beans for my sides. Everything was good and full of flavor. Most importantly, it's refreshing to have something in Garner that isn't just another traditional fast-food spot. The service was great and the staff was friendly and welcoming. While the location is great, the business doesn't stand out well enough to attract those that may not be looking for it. I parked into the back and entered the back door. While they sell soul food, the vibes feel super Jamaican. Black paint with green and yellow accents. Fairly large and very clean dining area. The cashier didn't really greet me when I walked up. She wasn't rude, but she wasn't friendly or welcoming. She did complement my shirt. Her non-verbal cues made me feel rushed. I had to ask her if they were sold out of anything. That information was not offered. I also had to ask her the price. I ended up ordering the lamb chops plate that came with rice, and two side. I opted for the collards and mac n cheese. It took maybe 5-8 minutes for my plate to come out. 3 other people came in, ordered and left before I did. I think it was because theybhad to grill the lamb chops. Visually the food looked delicious. Very generous serving of everything. However, the collards were the most disappointing collards I've ever had. They didn't taste bad. They just weren't seasoned AT ALL!! they just tasted like a collard with pepper flakes. The rice was just plain and Not seasoned. The mac n cheese was pretty good. They need to season the pasta a bit more and use a more flavorful cheese. The star was the lamb chops. They were a good size, seasoned extremely well, tender, and grilled to perfection! On top of that they gave me 4. They're They're the reason I'm giving 4 stars. I washed all of that down with a slice of their pineapple cake. It tasted like box cake with canned crushed pineapple on top. But it was delicious. I'd go back just for the lamb chops and cake. At $40 though, i won't go back too often. I hope the other sides are much better though!!

As an African American woman, soul food is more than just food to me. There's a certain authenticity and flavor I expect when I walk into a soul food restaurant. I ordered several items and after tasting everything, I honestly ended up throwing the entire meal away. I took a bite or spoonful of each item just to give everything a fair chance, and every time I moved on to the next thing, it was another disappointment. The mashed potatoes had a strange aftertaste that I couldn't get past. I don't know if it was the gravy or something else, but something tasted off. The barbecue ribs tasted more boiled than slow cooked and were completely drenched in sauce. The cabbage was overwhelmed with vinegar and lacked seasoning. The mac and cheese tasted more like overcooked noodles with cheese instead of flavorful baked mac and cheese. The cornbread was dry, and even the cake was dry. I will say the restaurant was clean and the employees were friendly, so I have no complaints there. My issue was with the food quality and value for the price. Spending around $30 for a meal like this did not feel worth it at all. Maybe other people love it, but based on my experience, I don't understand the hype. The food just did not taste authentic or well prepared to me. I wish I had stuck with my original plans and just gone to Mikey's Diner in Wilson, North Carolina instead. At least I would have left satisfied. For me, this wasn't worth the drive, wasn't worth the money, and I won't be returning.

The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.
