Smoked turkey Egusi soup, FuFu and Cabbage
    Davina W.

I stopped by here bc I wanted to try their food and had the taste for egusi and fufu. First let me say I almost missed it because it's kinda tucked away but I was able to locate it after speaking with a sweet person on the phone. I wanted chicken egusi, but they only serve smoked turkey and goat egusi soup. I opted for the smoked turkey, fufu and cabbage as my side. The egusi soap was ok but it was too smoked for my liking and also salty. I did not like the fufu at all. It was more gritty than what I've had before and the cabbage was just ok. They do cook the food upon ordering so it's fresh and hot but I just didn't care for the taste. The ambiance was very quiet as I was the only one there besides staff. It was vibrant and cultured. I am glad I gave it a try however I think I will pass on it, in the future.

Me and my family (my mom, aunt from New York, and mentor) went here a little over a week ago, and we were so excited to try African food for the first time. We tried a bunch of food off the menu like fufu, egusi goat, jollof, coconut black rice, spinach etc. and everything was phenomenal!! Everything had great flavor and the staff were very friendly. At first, we didn't know where to start with ordering, but they were more than happy to guide us through the menu. They gave great recommendations and were extremely informative. We'll definitely be back.

The lamb was tender and melted off the bone, the fufu was soft and hearty, and the plantains were scrumptious. We made the trek from the north side of town over and it was worth it. The place is immaculately clean and the menu is an extensive list of cuisine from all over the world. From Jamaica to Ghana and place in between. I know this could be a difficult balance to strike, but it was done well. I ordered the oxtails with rice and peace and plantains. The order was a nice size but I do feel the oxtails portion could have been bigger. Lots of sauce but not a lot of meat. The seasoning on it was very well done. Spicy but not too spicy. Well balanced. I enjoyed it along with my well portioned sides. The person with me got jollof rice and chicken. They said the rice was good and the grilled onion on top of the chicken was perfect. The chicken wasn't to their personal taste but looked well portioned and prepared. They also had a variety of bottled drinks to choose from like mango and hibiscus drinks. I would go back.

Heads up- they actually close at 9 PM, not 10 PM. Our server was great in recommending that between three people, we could share two bigger dishes and 3-4 smaller ones- that was more than enough to fill us up. It was a bit confusing to tell which dishes on the menu were small and which were the big ones, she did explain once and kindly did again when we requested. We were also told that we needed to order everything in one go so they pace the dishes coming out. I came here with two of my girl friends to celebrate a night of accomplishments- from graduate school graduations, to starting a new job, to traveling solo. Our food was good overall. Some highlights: the goat is a MUST have. One of the best goat dishes I've ever had- meat is so tender and juicy, fall off the bone, very succulent, extremely flavorful. One of my friends who isn't often a fan of goat, really loved it and also ranked it as her favorite dish. The cauliflower was incredible, especially with the special peanut/sesame/curry-like sauce. Incredible cocktails- a favorite were the Red Ghost (with tequila), and I believe the Spanish Citrus Spritz (I might have gotten the name wrong). The slightly flatter dishes were both the chicken dishes we had- they both felt like they were lacking in flavor, the Berbere Half Chicken and Piri Piri Chicken Wings. The chicken wings in particular didn't feel quite notable, we wish there was also a different sauce- even though it was coated with spices, it felt like it was a bit flat and the flavor was way too subtle. Similar with the Berbere Half Chicken. Lastly- the hours are really confusing. We saw online, both Google and Yelp that the restaurant closed at 10 PM. We didn't see it in noticeable writing nor were we notified in advance that they actually close at 9 PM. Because there was also another table, and that we checked online for their closing time, we thought we were doing okay on time. A man came up a bit after nine to check if we needed anything else, we were about to start on our cake (we called in advance to make sure it was okay), and then told us they closed at nine with undertones of asking us to leave. It was kind of them to let us know after we were there past nine, however it was also confusing because he checked on the table behind us and didn't tell them. We kindly checked with them since we didn't see anywhere/weren't notified by anyone about the time, and he told us that Google actually didn't let them change the times so it was now nice to know. They also brought a new dish out for them as well after 5 minutes, and it left us confused, especially since they didn't say anything to their table and only told ours. Not wanting to bother them, we packed up quietly and left, weren't greeted out but I suppose it was late. If we had known, we definitely would have respected the time and have left. I was particularly excited to come here especially because my school also has a Zweli's restaurant/cafe too that I have gone almost weekly- they're different, but I've always had a great experience there. I think the interaction here at the restaurant left me a bit off at this location.

And when I last lived in Durham 30+ years ago, having Ethiopian on Main Street Durham was unimaginable. But Durham on so many levels is a completely different universe. Goorsha is a very pleasant small dining room off a welcoming bar area when you come in. It was overcast and cold this early March day but the outside dining must be lovely later in the spring. We had a very helpful waitress answer a few questions and the food came quickly. The Sambusa appetizer should have perhaps taken a bit longer. The edges were crisp and tasty as was the Deko sauce it came with. But the center was still a bit cold so a bit more time was needed. I wanted beef tibs and went with the Zilzil tibs knowing there would be less sauce and danger of staining my work clothes. They were plentiful, well-cooked if not powerfully seasoned. They were quick to bring ample powered pepper so I could give it some kick dipping each injera enveloped bite for some added heat. The winner was my vegetarian dining companion who went with the very flexible pick three from many vegetarian options. They were a distinct yet complimentary troika of richly favored dishes. At least for lunch, Goorsha goes with individual plates rather than the traditional round platter family style so familiar in Ethiopian cuisine. It definitely worked for us given one of us was a vegetarian and the other all tibs all day. Definitely very glad to see it just across the street from Brightleaf Square and one of the earliest areas converted from tobacco warehouses to fashionable eateries. Glad it is part of the Durham eating scene.

The chicken was so super tender and flavorful, and went really great with the vegetables, which had just a little spice. They also have some really tasty juice and drink options. I really liked the juice I tried, made from the baobab tree. It was creamy and had a great sweet flavor. The owner was very nice and helpful as I decided what to get. Definitely check this place out (and also the other vendors in Blue Dogwood). This is a really great way to get some delicious global cuisine while supporting local restaurants close to Franklin St. (as a side note, it has it's own parking lot too, so you don't have to pay or search for parking along Franklin St. Always a good thing! They also have a really nice patio area).
