"Social Media made me do it" Fu Kee Express does a lot of things correctly. I visited during lunch hours, so I avoided long lines and dinner rush. Owner was personable, kind, and very nice. This is not a dine in restaurant - be prepared for takeout only. Prices are higher than typical. Food was solid. Egg rolls better than most and not greasy. Pork fried rice very, very good. Rice is yellow (perhaps food coloring?) and delicious. I typically order no egg, no peas, no carrots, and add bean sprouts. Disappointed they don't offer bean sprouts, but I'm also tempted to add veggies upon next visit. Overall, rice was delicious. My biggest letdown was garlic shrimp and veggies. Shrimp were large - but slightly overcooked. Veggies also overcooked. Flavor fell a tad bit flat. I'm guessing it was me, and perhaps I had a bad day (which, IMO, affects flavor). Best Chinese take-out in the area. I rolled up this evening 5 minutes before close. Owner graciously let me in and offered the full menu. He didn't guilt me about showing up at closing time either. Ordered sesame chicken and it was DELICIOUS! The chicken was tender, not overly battered and the flavor profile was well balanced. The white rice was perfectly cooked and fluffy. The restaurant during Covid turned into a pick up service only and since the restrictions have lifted, hasn't transitioned back to a regular sit down establishment. Nonetheless the owner took over the cooking, order taking and packing duties all to himself. Despite that, the food doesn't appear to suffer all that much. Notables dishes include his drunken noodles as well as his house special fried rice. The rest of the dishes were good enough. Please also ignore his gruff and curt demeanor. I really wanted to love this place based on the reviews (and it shares a parking lot with the hotel I am staying at) and after meeting Mike. I ordered the Hunan beef, extra spicy, which it was, but there was no flavor to either the entree or the odd yellow fried rice. The beef was the same low quality, fatty stuff at every other Chinese carryout place in every strip mall in America. The portion size was big and there was a lot of beef and veggies, but I could only stomach a few bites. I ended up throwing away the Hunan beef and ordering a hamburger from the hotel bar after all, so it was a very expensive dinner tonight read more

Yesterday, I went for a 2nd visit since the owner picked up the phone when I called. The ONE thing I'd highly recommend is the Crab Rangoons. Yes, it's expensive ($7.95 for 6 pieces as February 2022), but the owner doesn't skimp on the fillings. The Seafood Delight was slightly above average. The only criticism here is the scallops were overly cooked so it was a bit rubbery. The Lo Mein is still as good as last time so it's definitely a stable item that I would get. Avoid the Rice and Roasted Pork dishes. Why? Rice seems either super old and clumpy OR mushy (overcooked). I absolutely LOVE Fu Kee Express and I crown this as the number one spot for Chinese takeout in all of North Carolina. The man never disappoints with his food! My fiancé and I have eaten at many different Chinese takeouts and I was actually raised by parents who owned a Chinese restaurant throughout most of my childhood and teenage years. Coupled with the fact that my family and I are from New York where some of the best Chinese food outside of China is available you can imagine how much Chinese takeout I have had for comparison to be able to say this guy is the best. He gives the optimal seasoning and the meat he uses is always well marinated and tastes extremely fresh! He mentioned to me before that any of the prepared meat for the day that doesn't get used would not be used the next day to ensure freshness of his food. I highly recommend his crab rangoons! It's different from other ones in the area as he adds some sort of honey flavoring in the cheese so it gives it a completely unique flavor! Also, he probably makes the best beef ho fun and General Tso's chicken you can get anywhere (our typical order). I live in Durham now and still occasionally drive 35 minutes out of my way to his takeout place. Yes, he is a one man dream team and yes, at times he may not answer your phone call or may cause you to end up waiting a bit to enjoy his food due to him working on his own, but the quality of his food is seriously TOP NOTCH. As a child of immigrants who recognizes the dedication and independence in so many other Chinese parents of this same industry I admire and appreciate his hustle. This place has been on my radar to try because of all the great comments and online reviews. It did not disappoint! I lucked out and called on a slower day during lunch & the owner answered. I ordered Hunan Chicken, and he said 15 minutes. He was waiting on me when I got there. So an easy first order for me! I can't say enough good about the Human Chicken. Best I have ever had. Good & spicy! In so many Asian restaurants, when you order the spicy dish they warn you. It's spicy! Then you get the food and it is neither spicy nor flavorful! Not this dish. It lit me up and made my nose run. So good! The chicken was tender unlike that rubbery stuff you get at other places, and there was a good amount of tender spicy vegetables - like broccoli. I am a fan, and want to try some more dishes. So here is to hoping I get through on the phone again. There may be some luck in that. read more
