General Star Chicken (broccoli mixed with chicken) came with white rice, and both were tasty! Ordered a side of crispy spring rolls and a side of lo mein also. Spring rolls were great, but only two for $3.50. I was fine with that, but thought it worth noting. I wasn't, however, a fan of the lo mein. Good portion/ amount for the side item fee of $4.50, but I found it was bland. Overall, I was impressed on my first takeout. I had a small birthday gathering here recently. The food was really good slightly salty, but still good. I ordered several appetizers for all to share.. standouts were the heat seaker shrimp.. crispy green beans...and the crab Rangoon.. I also had shrimp fried rice as a main course. I ordered a drink.. I really can't remember what it was.. I just remembered it had gin plus vodka.. pineapple..seltzer.. etc.. very strong.. never again.. not sure what I was.. my normal drink is tequila and more tequila.. but I digress. Before I arrived.. my party was there and evidently a server told my brother that we had a 2 hour limit at our table.. So glad I wasn't there .. Anyway, after my brother and another person in my group talked to a manager everything was handled.. A DJ was there playing an odd mix of music, but oh well.. no one seemed to be interested that much.. Overall, good place to meet up with friends.. be sure to make reservations as needed. read more

Popped behind the host stand and found our reservation. He casually walked to the general vicinity of a table and stopped. Had to summon his attention to clarify which table we were to actually sit at. Atmosphere - loud but lively. Surprisingly had a Chinese restaurant feel which I wasnt expecting, it felt authentic! Or... As authentic as an American Chinese restaurants can feel at least. The lighting was dim which is nice, romantical to the max but not like... Get your iPhone flashlight app out dark. Service - great, attentive, a redeeming quality. Our main courses came out in the middle of appetizers which I didn't appreciate but... Meh. My meal was comped since main meal shit the bed... See below... So shout out to our server and his righting of the kitchens wrongs! Food/drinks - yummo heat seeking shrimp despite the absence of actual heat. Salmon was BURNT even after my request of medium finish. In addition to tasting like the grill itself, it was not seasoned. Bummer. But again.... Heat seeking shrimp stage left and still warm. I like that they can make items gluten free that taste fantastic. Quality can fluctuate, which is disappointing due to higher prices you pay. Miss them at their old location. Seems like the new location is trying to be more high end and going away from what made the other location great. They also dropped partnerships with delivery services and created their own with a very limited delivery radius. read more

Normally love Five Star, but my last experience has left me wondering when or if i'll be going back. Food was not prepared as requested, which usually never happens, and the lo mein was flavorless and so oily we couldn't eat it. Hoping it was just a fluke, but still worth noting. Music is also very loud, so don't go if you want to have a conversation with anyone. Management could improve by having the dining room music set much lower than the bar area and work on food prep consistency. After living in downtown Raleigh for a year, we somehow didn't know this place existed. We found a great new staple. Great atmosphere, delicious food, incredibly fast service and very low key. Excellent choice for vegetarians and vegans - you can substitute tempeh or tofu into almost any dish! Highly recommend the spicy tofu with noodles and the crispy sesame tofu. While in NC for the AOC festival, I was searching for a place to eat. This establishment came up on a website as a" must" place to eat. The outside like many of the reviews say seemed a bit sketchy, but these are my kind of places. Hole in the walls, dark dim streets, crew out front are known for the best food. Plus I like the catch line, hide your dogs. The food was great for the appetizers that is. The dumplings, the heat seeker shrimp, the spring rolls, the lettuce wraps were all great. The entrée was good but not great. They didn't live up to the cloud 9 effect that the appetizer had given me. My company and I had the crispy beef and the Thai peanut noddle dish. The crispy beef was a bit too crispy. Whenever I'm back in the area, I would be sure to visit again for the appetizers, the wonderful staff, and the great drinks. I will be looking forward to trying another entrée. Four stars for the great experience. Not their fault I picked something that wasn't their best dish. So wish we could give half stars. Was hoping for better...3 stars is a bit generous. The hosting person was grumpy and sort of grunted at us. I asked for an iced tea and was told that they only do hot teas and Pepsi products (pet peeve of mine). The scallion pancakes tasted like floury pita, and the crispy sesame beef and chicken and broccoli were both WAAAAY too salty (I expect to be bloated for days!). All in all, I've had worse dining experiences... but in a foodie town like Raleigh the only thing saving it is that there's no direct Chinese food competition and they give you HUGE portions. People also get addicted to gloppy, salty, fried food. This place has the potential to be a really cool place if they pick up their food game, shampoo their dirty carpeting, and repaint a bit. Great Place!! Years ago, a friend had his bachelor's party dinner at Five Star. We had a blast and I remember it being the best Chinese food I had ever had. I had the Crispy Sesame Beef and it was just amazing. Well a few days ago I was just passing through Raleigh and found Five Star on my phone. I walked in, ordered that same dish to go, and sat down on a big comfy couch to wait. It took maybe 20 minutes at the most and it was every bit as good as I remembered it. I could be wrong, but I think it was 5 or 6 years between visits and it tasted just like I remembered. Now that's consistency! The food was delicious but this place has a few serious downfalls that warrant this two star review. I'm not sure if management knows what kind of vibe they are giving in the dining area. In some ways it is very nice with wine glasses for your water and the candles on the table. However, the carpet is super cheap, the walls have chipped paint, and their music comes from a generic wireless speaker that is visible to all patrons up on the ledge of the wall near the ceiling. Gratuity is 20% for five people or more, whereas most places I go, the cut off is six or more. Also, they make you use chopsticks and if you want a fork they charge you 75 cents. I think that is insane. I think they could up their prices on the entrees by 25 cents and end up making more money and appearing classier and not so cheap to patrons than charging to use forks. Also, the lack of forks also means you have no knives at the table, making it very hard to cut up your food (chicken in our rice or the peppers in our salad) The heat seeker shrimp, pot stickers, fried rice, and mixed green salad were all great and reasonable priced. However, most Chinese places are reasonable priced and you always seem to have a ton of food for what you paid for, so five star is no exception to the norm. Overall, I was not really impressed and would rather so somewhere else (that doesn't charge for forks) for good Chinese food. read more

It was Appetizer Paradise at Five Star, with the spouse, a friend and I gorging at the trough of Tasty. While I like that the entrees can be made vegetarian at your whim, we were all in a 'try a little of this, a little of that' mood and appetizerpalooza it was! Between the three of us, we polished off two orders of the vegetable dumplings (one steamed, one fried), scallion pancakes, fried calamari, long beans, heat seeker shrimp and a few things I know I'm forgetting in the post-gluttony haze. The dumplings were tender and stuffed with ginger-laced cabbage and other vegetables, and I could have easily eaten the lot on my own. While the fried dumplings held together better than the steamed, each preparation was delicious. The salt and pepper calamari really didn't taste like either, but they were also tender and the dish included tentacles as well as rings, which is a big plus in my book. The sweet-hot sauce served alongside provided a nice counterpoint to their naturally mild flavour. Scallion pancakes were eclipsed for me by the long beans, simply seared and perfectly cooked, letting their natural deliciousness shine through. Heat-seeker shrimp. . .well, they left me looking for the heat. Delicious, sweet and well-cooked, the sauce lacked the spice I was hoping for but the rest of the preparation held its own, with crisp slices of celery bringing a fresh contrast to the shrimp. Service was superb, though I couldn't even make out our server's name over the loud club-esque music. She was on the ball, though, with plates delivered and cleared efficiently and glasses refilled before you even realised they were empty. While not top-notch gourmet dining as the name might imply, Five Star delivers dishes that, if not innovative, are solid and pleasing to suit an array of palates, plus their late hours give the post-party crowd options beyond the usual fast food fare. read more

This place is great we got here at 7pm on Saturday and the bar was packed with a ton of young "skater kids" we went to the host stand and was immediatly seated! We ordered the pan fried dumplings(pork) and they came quick and very hot! They were amazing 6 per order me and my wife shared. We then ordered the Sesame fried beef to share. This was to die for and It was a huge order and filled us to the brim! They say they charge .75 cents for forks but the waitress gave us 2 at no charge.
