What decided the 2stars was a combination of things. Taste, cost and convenience. Sorry, I gave it another try but it just doesn't compare to In'N'Out. $11 bucks for cheeseburger, fries and a drink? Almost double what a combo would cost at In'N'out? No thanks. I would have given three stars if not for the cost of the meal. And,honestly, there are plenty of fast food joints with tastier burgers. And finally, I just don't crave five guys like I do with In'N'Out. Build in shorter working hours (11-10pm) plus no drive-thru service? Keep your free peanuts. Everything is amazing (but the fries). I am a born and raised californian... that being said I grew up in oakland where there wasn't an in and out for 100 miles until recently... I know I am supposed to live and breath in and out and shun any other not quite fast fast food burger joints (especially ones from washington state.) but my tastebuds don't lie. My mouth litterally waters as I write this. I am a big bacon fan, and I love what they do with it, mmmm so crispy. There is apparently a cult-like following for Five Guys Burgers & Fries so I felt that I needed to try it out. It shares a lot of ambiance (clean, cold, sterile), store design (red and white and lots of stainless steel) and menu choices (limited to burgers, fries, drinks) with In N Out Burger and like In N Out is recent to the franchise business after developing generations of loyalty (in FG's case though - in Virginia). They offer free peanuts while you wait for your freshly cooked items. Service is fast and efficient. The burgers come in two sizes as do most other things on the menu. The selection of toppings is quite exhaustive and all are available to you at no additional charge. Besides the peanuts their other bit of shtick is the manner in which the fries are served. They fill a paper cup with fries, put the cup in your bag and then pour another scoop of fries of the top of your order - you know - for that filled to overflowing experience. The food was fresh tasting but not spectacular. All the burgers are near well done (for what I assume to be health reasons) which is fine by me but I wasn't blown away by the taste. I found it a little less appealing than In N Out but all the toppings were a nice touch. The fries were plentiful but a little too soggy for my taste. I have not been converted to a Five Guys adherent. It was just OK. I won't rush back anytime soon read more

NOT IMPRESSED! My husband and I tried this place because of the awards and reviews. We were very disappointed. The food was extra greasy. The grilled onions were not grilled enough so they were soggy. The guys in the kitchen thought they were being funny/cool by yelling back and forth to each other as loud as they could. They screamed out the customers orders as well. The place was not busy at all so it was very unnecessary. It was ANNOYING! Don't waste your time. Go to In-N-Out. Visited Five Guys for the first time last week. When I entered I got a little sick from the grease smell of the peanut oil that they use to fry the fries. I placed an order for a cheeseburger / fries / milk. I was hesitant in ordering the fries but wanted to give it a taste test. I discovered they don't have milk and i was encouraged to get a soft drink with the meal. I declined because I don't like watered-down soda. Input: Food was overpriced for the quality. Fries were so greasy that the bag they placed them in (take out order) had the peanut oil go all the way through and I had to place it on the floor mat so I wouldn't stain the seat. Hamburgers are much better at In-N-Out and just about anywhere else to avoid the price / grease / and have milk to go with lunch. Will not return. read more

Why are people so obsessed with comparing this place to In n Out? Is it because it's been tauted so long as East Coast's answer to In n Out domination? Five Guys is so different in almost every way except for price point - different patty sizes, unlimited toppings, etc. Coming here for lunch on a weekday with 4 male co-workers, I felt assaulted with testosterone immediately upon entering. After a speedy wait in line, I ordered their baby burger (I'm a lightweight, I know). But I'm also a badass, and ordered it with jalapeno peppers, banana peppers and hot sauce. The cashier was appropriately impressed. We also ordered regular fries and cajun fries for the group. After scoring an umbrella table outside, we dug in. The guys, btw, each ordered the big bacon cheeseburger. They inhaled them. I tried to be a bit more dignified but it wasn't easy. The burger tasted great but I thought the bun was pretty crappy - like the cheap generic kind you would buy for a large BBQ where you don't have anyone to impress. It was crumbly and dry (not at all like the toasted, buttery In n Out buns). The meat quality was the same as In N Out, maybe slightly better, but the flavors were not as strong. The cajun fries were the real star for me, esp. in comparison to In N Out fries - which I HATE. So all in all, the burger was good but not as amazing as people make it out to be. I like that there are so many toppings available but I don't think there is anything to get all emotional over. read more

The manager Destin F on the register was very friendly and detailed with explaining the ordering process to my boyfriend and I. The burgers were juicy and stacked with toppings and the fries were some of the best I've ever had! The whole crew was having fun but focused on the job at hand and served us our food efficiently and deliciously. Definitely coming back in the near future; the service and food was outstanding. So after all this hype about how the east coast does burgers and fries, I'm thoroughly disappointed. We've been doing burgers better than that at In & Out for decades in Cali. I would have given two stars but their redeeming quality is that their fries are superior to most any fries you can get. You can even get a Cajun version which are in a league of their own. 2 Stars for burgers, 5 for fries, and 3 for everything else. this place is delicious. i had been hearing about this place and finally decided to try it. the gal at the counter was friendly and asked questions like "how is your week so far?" and "how was work?" i really liked that. it didn't seem like just small talk, she genuinely seemed interested. the flavor of the burger is great, but good thing i got the mini burger or i might not have been able to finish it!! they give u a huge selection of toppings and condiments to choose from. and their cajun fries? yes, they are phenomenal with the perfect hint on spiciness. can't wait to go again :) read more

I think the key to this place is try to come on off hours. We went here around 3 and our burgers were delicious and far less greasy than usual. There was only a few people there so the people weren't frantically making the burgers. There was a little mix up with our fries. We ordered regular fries but the guy let me know that they'd made cajun so he gave them to me as a taste test. A couple minutes later he brought over a huge bag of regular fries, more than usual which seems impossible. He was really nice about it. definitely plus points for that. The growing chain of CINCO GUYs burgers and fries. I have been to the fremont location and the first time i compared it to in and out because well it looks exactly like in and out and they sell they same stuff. So this time i came into five guys to just rate the food itself. The burger is good when i get everything on it including bacon. The cajun fries i like but not in love with cajun fries. The atomosphere is exactly like in and out. The whole decor just looks like in and out. I like the burgers here but i wish you can choose how u want ur meat. I like my meat medium just because they my style and it's juicy-ER that way. The location of this place is good! You can get alot done on the weekends and stop by here to grab a bite to eat. At the end of the day if ur getting a meal at five guys it is going to cost you about $10-$15 pending size / add ons. So think about all the stuff u can get for 10-15 of food and ask ur Good Looking self is it really worth it for a fast food burger place? Also this is just me but five guys doesn't have a distinguish taste to their burgers because you can custom what you want in it. For me i like the burger to have a distinguish. read more

This place is alright. It's pretty much the same as its counterpart in Fremont, which means the burgers are satisfying enough. I prefer the burgers at In-N-Out, but the fries are better here if you like to taste more of the potato as they're cut much thicker here. I love their friendly cashiers and that they offer toppings especially grilled mushrooms and bacon! However, I had a lot of turn-offs about my meal and this place... - Burnt bacon: Burnt bacon looses its crispy, salty pork flavor and turns into charcoal. - Soft buns: Buns had no density and just mushed into the rest of my burger. - Cajun fries??: The fries themselves were nice and soft with crisp ends. However, they didn't taste very Cajun but more like they were tossed in ramen noodle seasoning, specifically chicken flavor. - Coke w/o carbonation: I didn't feel that soda burn in my throat. I could see how busy Five Guys was but they should monitor their soda machines. - No trays: Every meal (to-go or not) is put into a brown paper bag. If all they use is paper bags, I didn't even see any recycling bins set up. What happened to being green, saving a tree and/or recycling? - And no booths: Seating is set up like an uncomfortable cafeteria. One thing I like about most burger places is that diner booth feel. I'd been waiting for this location to open ever since I moved to the area in the summer! I've been to Five Guys on the East coast and down in Orange County and I can't get enough of their cajun fries. A regular is PLENTY and I can never finish it alone. Their burgers are actually 2 patties, and have a cooked-on-your-backyard-grill feel and taste, which I love. It can get a little soggy and almost TOO meaty by the end though - but then, I guess that's not really a bad thing, for the price you pay. Definitely a lot of food for less than $10. read more

yum. yum. yum. yum. and yum. this is as close as you can get to making your own burger at home. you walk in, place your order by customizing your burger or dog and then grab a bowl of peanuts to munch on while you wait for your number to be called. they have yummy fries and you can get original or cajun. a helpful hint is to order the smaller of the two sizes if you aren't that hungry. they pile them in a cup and then toss an extra scoop in for good measure. you will have more than enough! food is super fresh and you can see that it is made to order since the kitchen is wide open behind the register. they even have a sign to let you know where your fries originated as potatoes for that day. burp. read more

I came here to meet my 2nd favorite person in the world on our way back home from the bay area a little over a month ago and initial impressions: the red and white motif totally screamed In and Out to me. I know, I know, this is a separate chain that originated from the other coast but come on, you gotta admit, it's easy to get the two confused. Anyhow, had the bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, grilled onions, and A-1 sauce. Gee by golly wow, A-1 on a burger is sheer genius. Works for every other type of meat out there, why not burgers, right? I gotta say, Five Guys got something going on here. L-O-V-E the soft buns. The fries had a great seasoning but I could see others finding it a bit on the salty side. The meat was cooked well and despite being slathered in steak sauce, its flavor shined through. When it comes down to it though, you can't compare this place to In and Out. The experience is different. Sure, it's great to be able to customize your burger with every imaginable topping out there (BK have it your way, gnome sane?) but a simple In and Out burger does its magic with the usual assortment. Finally, my biggest hitch about this place is the price: 6 bucks for JUST the burger? You want fries and something to wash it all down with? That'll cost you extra. Call me cheap but it's hard to part with 9 bucks for a single meal at a fast food joint.
