i suppose i should refrain from weighing in on the five guys vs. in and out because i'm sorta biased against this food anyway. had five guys back on the east coast a few years ago. now made it way westward. the fries are pretty good -- specially selected, skin on, thicker, only the small pieces are crispy though anyways the burger is double size unless you get the little which is more like a regular. nice to have all the additives. i still prefer in and out. read more

I ordered a grilled cheese online for pick up. Even though it took me longer to pick it up than expected, it was great. I liked the sliced bread, and the fact that I could get grilled mushrooms, jalapenos and pickles, all things that In N Out does not offer on their grilled cheese. The smaller order of Cajun fries was huge, and it was nice that they waited until I arrived to pack them up. Cold fries would've made me sad. read more

Intensely friendly servers, cooks, and general staff. Everyone was nice! I took advice from another Yelper and ordered the "mini" version - which is just one patty. They offer their burgers in a lettuce wrap or as a salad. I opted for the lettuce wrap with grilled onions and grilled mushrooms and wasn't disappointed. Veggies were fresh and crisp but the patty was a little thin. They dump all the fries into the bag on top of your food (why??) so you have to dig you burger out. Or eat all your fries before your burger, whatevs, I don't judge. read more

It's been a little over 1 year since my last review of this place. I rarely write 2 reviews for one place unless I feel it's warranted and in this case, yes it's warranted. I would say during the last 3-4 times, my burger hasn't even been serviceable. It's been under seasoned, way too greasy and the meat completely falls apart upon eating. Sure you drench the damn thing with all these toppings but 5 guys is forgetting to put effort where it counts most. And that is in the actual quality of the meat. The fries are good. I just had a small cheese burger with bacon it was good and the meat was juicy. The fries were in a large cup and some of the fries had the skin left on the fries and I liked the fries that are fried in peanut oil. They also have peanuts to enjoy before you get your burgers. I can't believe this place has fewer stars than In N Out. It is far superior and they don't have that disgusting dressing that In N Out has, that we all know is just a sweet thousand island dressing. The first time I went here, I thought it was the best hamburger I have ever had in my life and has now become one of my first stops when visiting my sister here in Sunnyvale. I like that I get to choose exactly how I want my burger and don't have to worry about them putting disgusting saucese on there if I forget to ask to have it without. The peanuts while waiting for the burger are a nice touch, but with so many Americans and their peanut allergies, I am surprised they have been able to get away with it. The atmosphere and prices take them down a star. It is cold in there and they clearly do not want people hanging around too long. They want you to take your burger to go and make it clear with the interior. The price for a hamburger, fries, and a drink are well above average, but I am an American living in Norway, so I still find it cheap compared to Norwegian prices. Compared to other Five Guys, this one is definitely the best I have tried out of the 5 I have been to in California. read more

Ok, so maybe I was expecting too much - given all the hoop-la surrounding the opening - but I gotta tell you the initial experience was wa-a-a-y underwhelming. Compared to the usual fast food places this compares pretty well, but to me they're putting themselves in competition with In-n-Out not MackyD's - and they just didn't pull it off IMHO. Well I got the complete wrong order. I got a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo, and ketchup. What I got was a bacon cheeseburger with two meat patties (for me I feel that's unnecessary and never order that), and just ketchup. Nothing else. I waited in line for 15 minutes and read the articles on the wall on how great this place is so I was very excited. I ordered a small bacon cheese burger with everything on it with fries. $10! My food is in a brown paper bag,ok. I was sooooo disappointed!! The fries had no flavor and were super soggy and slightly burnt, tasted old, so gross. The burger was mediocre and small! The hamburger had no flavor to it no seasoning at all very bland. It tasted like something you made from your kitchen but no seasoning at all. For $10!! In and Out burger is waaaaay better and worth what they charge. This 5 guys place seems to have a large ego but delivers crap at high prices. It's all hype! i've been eating five guys a lot and to be honest, in n out, you have nothin on five guys. but i guarentee you that if you keep eating this 3 times a week like me and you happened to be a single guy...you will be just left with five guys in your life. Why is this place rated 4 stars for a chain: 1) free peanuts 2) amazing toppings all for free 3) priced fairly 4) not one flavor overpowers the other...the burger is well balanced 5) long lines...you are wondering HUH?? long lines make you crave five guys all the more....the wait is part of the journey! and the best thing is that the long lines move quickly...best of both worlds! i really don't like their fries...even their cajun fries are just ok...doable...but I'm not complaining. I like the burgers here only because I love mushrooms and bacon on them and In-N-Out doesn't give me that option. However, I am also very critical of the fries and with all the options that Five Guys gives you on the burger you would think that they could give you some more variations on the fries. I always order the Mini Bacon Cheese Burger "all the way" with extra mushrooms. The burgers are always pretty consistent and messy (I guess some people like it that way) but I'm not in anyway in awe with the burgers. If I'm in for a quick bite I still often times prefer the burger+fries of In-N-Out. read more

I honestly don't see how Five Guys can get one or two stars, because the food here is delicious! I ordered a veggie cheese sandwich and it was an actual burger, not fake food stuffed in between two slices of bread. OVERRATED! When 5 Guys Burgers opened up in the South Bay (inside "The Plant" shopping plaza on Curtner Ave in San Jose, everyone was talking about it! The famous East Coast burger joint finally comes out to the West Coast to compete against our famous In-N-Out Burger). After driving by the location many times and seeing a long line out the doors I never got a chance to try it out until my coworkers wanted to check out the Sunnyvale location on El Camino. When I arrived the line was long and out the door just like I expected but I was pleasantly surprised when the line started moving a bit faster. Since this was my first time at 5 Guys some of my coworkers gave me some tips on how/what to order. I was pretty hungry that day so I ordered a Cheeseburger, Hot Dog, and Fries (everything with the works) The burger was freaking huge (double of everything!) I had to push the burger down a bit to get it to fit in my mouth. The first bite into it equaled disappointment. I didn't know really what to expect but it wasn't this typical burger experience. At that point (during the first bite and swallow) I realized that no burger joint beats In-N-Out. I liked the way their menu was structured and I like the fact you can put all kinds of things on your burger which gives it an edge over In-N-Out but overall the taste just wasn't there. I actually thought the hotdog was better then the burger. The fry's were good but again, not as good as In-N-Out's. I could be just use to the In-N-Out taste since I grew up eating their burger over the 5 Guys but it just felt like 5 Guys burgers puts a lot of things in their burgers that makes it unique but when it comes to the overall taste - nothing beats In-N-Out. What makes things worse is that 5 Guys Burger is definitely more pricier then In-N-Out ($15 for 1 cheeseburger, hotdog, fries, and a coke). read more

I stopped by the other day and they seemed pretty slow. I figured it was time to try them out. Being a newbie I ordered the cheese burger. Little did I know that meant two patties with cheese in the middle. Bonus points for having free topings....I got the grilled onions and grilled mushrooms. I truly feel that food and service are something that go hand in hand. I really need to write this review, so that you guys, and maybe that girl, know that there is a different between being rude, and having a bad day. My boyfriend and I have NEVER been to Five Guys before. Never had the chance to, everytime we get there it is always too late. :( Today, we were like, let's get Five Guys. We get there, we look at the clock, holy crud it's 9:58 so I jump out of the car and run in to order. The open sign was also still on so I figured they were still open. There is a girl who is sweeping and cleaning, and she didn't say anything as I walked in so everything seemed okay. There is already a woman ordering food, and I sit back to look at the menu (wow what a menu). The girl at the cash register looks to me and says "Are you with her? (Points with her finger too) I said "No I'm not." She then goes "We're already closed" and waves me away. I was so shocked. So rude. Not even a "sorry, we are already closed." I just said "Could you please take my order?" She then rolls her eyes and goes "Ugh, fine." and continues to take the woman's order. Already in my head I was thinking "Great, this is going to be an awesome first Five Guys experience." My boyfriend walks in behind me and he's like babe what do you want to get? At this point, I feel rushed because she already denied me, and so now I just feel like I got to order and get on out of there so it's not an issue for them since it was "closed." (BTW There were about 5 families eating their meal inside at the time as well, with about 3-4 people waiting on their order.) Anyway, I order I said "Could I get an order of regular cajun fries, and two cheeseburgers." She then goes, in a stern/rude/annoyed voice "Is there anything else you'd like on the burger?" My boyfriend goes "Could I get mine with grilled onions?" - this is where she becomes a b i t c h. She goes "EVERYTHING IN BLACK is complimentary, and everything in RED are add-ons" My boyfriend then goes "WELL we've never been here, we didn't know that." (He sort of gave her a slight attitude because she was like forcing us to order, and making us feel stupid for not knowing what the difference between the black and red extras were) After that she sort of realized that she was being really harsh and rude to us, so she let go of that attitude she had, gave us a smile, and slowly explained that everything in black was already on the burger, and whatever was in red were extra add-ons. We just said, no it's fine that's all. She then asked if we wanted drinks, and we declined. She then ended this whole experience with "Well, here you go guys! You guys are lucky number 02" And really, if she would have just apologized for either having a bad day, or even for giving us attitude it would have been okay. But no, she was so rude and harsh and tried to cover it with a smile at the end. My boyfriend is PISSED at this point, he has never encountered such rude service before. I then told him about how she almost denied me service and gave me the biggest attitude before I even ordered, and this set him off. He asked to talk to the manager, and we told her what happened. The manager, Amber, was empathetic and told us that isn't how Five Guys is supposed to treat their customers, etc. And we pretty much just told her that we do not have anything against that girl, but she really shouldn't be speaking to customers like that, because it really made us never want to come back. In the end, Amber kindly offered to compensate a future meal, and even offered free drinks. We declined, and thanked her for letting us just blow some steam, and to let her know that one of her employees is providing ugly customer service. It was just SOO unbelievable that someone would treat a customer that way. Regardless of this horrible experience, their food is very good. I can't say I will be coming to this location anytime soon, but all in all these burgers are definitely tasty, fresh, and huge. 0 Stars Customer Service by the girl at the cash register. Came here for the first time last weekend and it's probablyyy my last too. I ordered the Little Hamburger and added tomatoes, lettuce, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, and mustard. The food didn't take long to arrive but they forgot my lettuce :( The burger tasted alright but not as good as I expected. My bf and I also split some of the cajun fries which were tasty. My first time trying the place and I am not impressed. First of all the bun was really thin so it got soggy very quickly. Also the bacon and the meat were burned. I had the remove the parts that were very charcoal. The meat itself was not seasoned and very dry. Lastly the fries were very soggy. I really don't know what the big hype is about the place. I have been hearing a lot about Five Guys and finally got a chance to try them out for lunch. Overall, I was satisfied, but not blown away. I would be open to trying them again, but somehow my burger lacked the crack cause I am not addicted. The Good So, I am low carb boy, but have heard that the fries are amazing. I tried one of my friend's and I will say it was a pretty damn good french fry. They were fresh cut and thicker than most out there. Also, they post where their potatoes come from which I think is a very cool touch. The other thing I had heard about was the unlimited, free toppings and their selection was very impressive. It was nice to get a bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions. The bacon was crispy and I liked the variety. Also, other than the new soda machines at Carl's Jr. and the Sonoma Chicken Coop that serve what seems like 5000 soda options, Five Guys is the only fast food restaurant that has Caffeine Free Diet Coke on tap. I didn't get it, but want to give kudos for having a unique option on tap. The Bad I think the In-N-Out vs. Five Guys debate is going to rage for awhile. I had read several reports online that Five Guys did not have a bunless option which made me wary of trying them. I am happy to report that they will serve their burgers without a bun, but, unlike In-N-Out that wraps theirs in lettuce, Five Guys merely serves it on the shredded lettuce. It would be very difficult and potentially very messy to attempt to eat the bunless burger anywhere but at a table in the restaurant. I wish I could have gotten it wrapped. The burger had lots of fresh ingredients, but I will say that I find In-N-Out to be far more flavorful. FIve Guys doesn't look or taste like a fast food burger, which I appreciated. It is more like a hand crafted burger from a local diner, but that does not make it A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. It is a solid, decent, good burger. Nothing more, nothing less. A small nit is that the grilled onions came in a small take out container and not on the burger. They were chopped up and not necessarily caramelized. I hate to sound like a broken record, but I prefer In-N-Out's caramelized onions over Five Guys. Basically, I would have lunch at Five Guys again, but it is going to be a once-in-awhile type of experience. Give it a try and enjoy. Also, I forgot to partake in the free peanuts. My girlfriend and I come to this specific location maybe once a month/once every 2 months. We like the taste of the burgers and I'm a huge fan of the peanuts. But HOW do they manage to mess up one of our orders every single time we come here?! We barely come, yet they still always add a topping we didn't ask for or don't add a topping that we want. I truly don't understand how they can mess it up each time we go here. And it's not easy taking out every tiny piece of unwanted onion or wiping off mustard I never asked for. I understand if I get my order wrong once, but this is like the 7th time we've been here. They never fail to mess our orders up. read more

They don't have milk shakes! But they do have kosher style hot dogs (with cheese & bacon if you want) and grilled cheese sandwiches. The burgers have many more topping options (like bacon) compared to In-N-Out. The biggest difference is the prices -- $5.59 for a double cheeseburger here seems a lot more expensive than In-N-Out. My verdict? Worth trying...once. Then go back to your normal routine. read more

Ehhh... I have to say I am not a big fan of this place. I honestly think it's over rated. The inside is nicer and more comfortable then other fast food burger places but as far as the quality of the burgers here, there not that great. I would much rather go to In N Out. Now in order to give this place a fair shot, I ate here at least 3 times and every time I ate here I was disappointing. The burgers were either so greasy that they would slide right off the bun or they were dry and flavorless. If you want a good burger try In N Out or ever Red Robbin. read more
