When I saw all the reviews that compared Five Guys unfavorably to In N Out, I thought the comparison wasn't that useful since they seemed like different types of places. But after eating here, I have to agree that In N Out is better. I loved the concept of free toppings for the burgers, but I'd rather pay for them and have them be better quality. The grilled mushrooms and grilled onions were especially unappealing. The complimentary peanuts strike me as an odd, but not bad, idea. I was glad we had ordered a regular sized fries to share, as they threw about twice as many fries into the bag as was held by the cup. Good place to grab a burger. I to experienced the staff singing pretty much from the point I opened the door to when I left. At first this caught me off guard but when I saw how much everyone was having, hey it's cool the food is always hot and yes the fries are killer. Gave Five Guys a second try. Still let down - the burgers are not very juicy. However, the Cajun Style Fries are very yummy. The people at the counter are extremely helpful and nice. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with the everything and it was very delicious but the grilled onions and mushrooms were barely cooked and the burger was almost too big to eat. Went to five guys this past week. Ordered on line and when I walked in the door I was greeted by name and the cook said it would be two minutes till my order was ready and could he get me any peanuts or glass of water while I was waiting, asked how my day was going. I don't get this service at some of the more expensive sit down restaurants in Redding, and I have to say best burger I've had in a long time, lots of cheese and cooked to perfection. A great hamburger restaurant that I like to go when I am craving a good hamburger with French fries. Even though they give you a lot of fries, I still like them, and always save the rest of the fries for eating later at home. Their milkshakes are great also. I also like how they play music inside the restaurant which makes it more enjoyable while eating. read more

Waited a couple weeks for the hype to die down and for a parking space to open up, lol. I'm writing this review for the boyfriend as I wasn't in the mood for grease and I opted for a Chipotle taco next door. I'm glad I did. His burger was so so, the cheese wasn't all the way melted - yuck! The fries were pretty terrible. Soggy and over salted and stuffed so much in the box they were all smushed. Big disapointment. I'm not a big burger person, but my bf is. He recommended that we go here after a late night movie. I walked in and I was pleasantly surprised about how many options were included for free! I got a little bacon cheese burger. Don't let the world little fool you. It was huge! I got it all the way with grilled jalapeños. We shared an regular order of fries and that was way more than we could eat. I love that they have peanuts out to snack on while we waited. My favorite thing about this place is they have one of those new high tech coke machines with over a hundred options to choose from. Whenever we go I always try a new combination. We were traveling home today and tried to stop at IN N OUT burger but it was closed so we went to Five guys. Pleasantly surprised not only was as good it was better. The staff was very friendly and polite. We ate outside and a staff member even came out introduced himself and wanted to know how everything was and if we needed anything. read more

They wouldn't make cheese fries. Many locations do. I hate it when a business won't make a satisfied customer. You melt some cheese on some fries and make my day...but instead I get looked at like I have two heads on my shoulders. I guess that is up to me to deal with. Typical Redding -- no customer service. A brief menu selection. My husband ordered the bacon cheeseburger but didn't get it. We didn't let them know this or made a fuss, as they tripled our order of cajun fries at no extra charge. The staff seemed happy to the point that one of the cooks was rehearsing for a potential stint on American Idol. Quite the floor show! Five Guys is my burger of choice when I want a larger burger. This trip I needed to eat light, so I elected to try their BLT. I was offered the same dazzling array of condiments as available on their burgers, but chose to stay with the classic L & T. Surprised that it was on a bun, but it worked! The bacon wasn't in strips, but generously portioned with large chunks. Next time (and there will be a next time!) I'll opt for extra L & T. read more

I went for the 1st time this afternoon and was more than surprised how good the burger was. I got a regular burger which is 1/2 lb. Huge, next time I'll get a little burger. The burgers are good-- I liked the add-ons like mushrooms and jalopenas (reminiscent of Fuddwruckers) but I don't think you can beat Bartels for the money in Redding. I went in with my boyfriend for the first time a couple nights ago, and I have to say the service and food went way beyond my initial expectation. When we walked inside it was a little crowded, but most of the people had been sitting down and were already eating. When we got to the front, we sheepishly said that this was our first time coming in and the man at the register was very enthusiastic and walked us through the entire menu while simultaneously making us laugh and have a great time. The prices were a little high, but the quality overall was worth it. The burgers themselves were cooked well and I really enjoyed the fact that they customize the burger TO YOU. You tell them everything you want on it and they cook and prepare it for you (so it's not like going through a drive through and suffering through onions if you really didn't want them). However, with the bacon burgers, the bacon seemed a little dried out (which is a shame because that is the main point of a BACON burger). :( The selling point for us though were the fries. They had a great taste to them and were cooked in peanut oil instead of the normal fryer grease and oil. Plus, we ordered one regular size fry and that was more than enough to keep both of us satisfied. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a little plain in my own opinion, with nothing on the walls besides reviews of the 5 Guys chain, I would have liked to maybe see more color other than just WHITE. I have been to several 5 Guys restaurants and they have always been a little pricey but nothing like this. 1 Cheese Burger, 1 Regular fries, and 1 regular drink will run you $12.00, starts too add up if your with multiple people. Just under 1700 calories (without additional toppings). Now the fries are great, probably the best thing that they serve. If someone offered me a free Inn and Out burger, OR a Five Guys burger I would choose the Inn and Out burger hands down. Now the fries are great, probably the best thing that they serve. The store itself is cramped, there is no real waiting area for your order, (right in front of soda machine) Also it was 50 degrees out today and they were running their AC, just made it a little uncomfortable. All in all it is not a bad place, staff was friendly and food didn't take long, but to me the food is just not worth the price. I will be back for fries, but that is it. read more

If you don't understand when people talk about the blandness of the burgers at McD's, Burger King, etc. try one of these burgers and you will experience the difference. The burger was really good. Order the regular fries, you'll get more than you can eat so save your money. I see a lot of negative comparisons to In N Out burger but it's not warranted. For the money In N Out is a good substitute but not one on one. Plus the fries at in and out are just shoestring cuts fried in oil, nothing special whereas Five guys fries are "meaty" with spices (but not overpowering). This location- very loud music, slim parking, and you get the feeling that the crew is trying to force a happy work place persona. read more

The prices are high but you get a ton of food. Got the small burger and it tasted great with a small fry(aka they fill half your bag with fries). Also some of the best fries I've tried around Redding. Some of the down side is the place offers free peanuts witch mean there was shells every where(floor, tables, etc. it's was really dirty and it made it feel unsanitary there. But there service was quick and sweet. If I'm in the area I will most likely stop by again. read more
